ABSTRACT: John William Lewin's Birds of New South Wales was a landmark publication in the early documentation of the new-found Australian animals. The accurately drawn plates have both scientific and artistic merit reflecting Lewin's considerable competence as a natural history artist. Lewin's book, which went through four editions in the period from 1808 to c. 1875, has always been a great rarity in the first two editions while the third and fourth are more commonly found. In this paper these two later editions are discussed in some detail with special emphasis on the colouring of the plates,

Abstract In 1482, Erhard Ratdolt, a prominent German printer in Venice, issued the editio princeps of Euclid’s Elements. Ratdolt experimented with the new technology of printing to overcome the difficulty in arranging geometric diagrams alongside the text. This article examines the materials and techniques that Ratdolt used in his edition of Elements including his use of vellum, gold printing, and illumination for special copies as well as his use of woodcuts, movable type, and metal-cast diagrams. The manuscript tradition, however, reveals a special (possibly first) edition of the Hilarion explicitly dedicated to the ascetic Roman woman Asella. The present study reviews the nature of the pertinent manuscript evidence, identifies the discovery of the dedication in the early seventeenth century, and then discusses the dedication's loss from scholarly sight (and why it was lost), until its rediscovery by a graduate student at the University of Illinois in
