Full textEvent Management is a new medium, which has generated much enthusiasm from the events industry, as well as from the South African tourism industry, and is globally accepted as a developmental and marketing strategy from which destinations can benefit (Tassiopoulos, 2005: xiv). Event tourism has demonstrated significant growth and continues to expand as South Africa closes on hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Events are different from permanent tourism attractions as they attract people to a shortlived, organised activity where visitors may participate, watch, view, learn and enjoy (Tassiopoulos, 2005: xiv). Event organisers have a number of goals and objectives that they need to achieve within stressful environments. Events offer unique opportunities to spread the tourism season for a particular destination and to promote destinations or attractions. They can also be used to stimulate demand by attracting extra, new or repeat visitors, while events can also be intended to generate additional revenue for a destination (Light, 1996:183). In order to ensure that events are successful, and to generate income for destinations, event practitioners are constantly under extreme pressure to perform. A combination of knowledge and skills is required to empower event practitioners to contribute to the industry and the community, at large. Therefore, tertiary institutions, such as the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), should encourage active learning, facilitation, research, practical experience and engagement with its surrounding communities. This thesis focuses on a theoretical analysis of the events environment, as well as key factors that make this industry unique and justified as a separate discipline. The industry is hugely diverse and there are challenges, but prospective and current event practitioners who have established qualifications from registered institutions, can contribute to sustainable development and employment creation in South Africa. Carlos (2005: xi) states that for those who seek an exciting career, where their organisation skills and attention to detail along, with their creativity can be fully utilised, this would be their kind of industry; this is an industry that attracts several of the country's most vibrant students. Events Management is an industry, which is justified as a separate industry in South Africa.

Special events could boost city economy and enrich resident’s life, but how to resolve the extra traffic caused by the event is a stern test to transportation system. Traffic planning is one of the key points in the events planning process. Some studies had mentioned that a success event must obtain the support of local residents, but less of researches had analysis residents’ perceptions in traffic impact. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of resident’s perceptions and assessed the performance of traffic planning during “Macau Grand Prix 2009”. Macau Grand Prix is a motorsport which will take place in city road, and the road will be restricted to use during competition. This research designed the questionnaire based on the management framework of traffic planning under special events. There are three dimensions as traffic control and management, travel demand management and travel information which mentioned by Carson and Blysma(2003). The types of traveler were classified according to the mode and route was chosen in there commuting trips. The survey was conducted in two steps in order to investigate the pre- and post-events perceptions of local residents in Macau Peninsula, and 417 and 476 valid samples had been collected respectively. Former Guantian Township of Tainan County has been holding "Guantian Water Chestnut Festival" since 1997, and it is intended to bring cultural connotation to the industry, drive the tourism boom, bring business opportunities, and promote the overall economic prosperity of the region. In the adjustment of administrative divisions on December 25, 2010, Tainan County and Tainan City were reorganized into Tainan City. After the restructuring of the district public office to hold a tourism festival, there are fewer studies on the issues facing. This study is based on the Guantian Water Chestnut Festival which has been held for more than 20 years. To study the course of participation in the Guantian District Office of Tainan City in the past two years, understand the role of the local government's public sector in the public-private partnerships for festivals, and local governance issues that promote festivals. An analysis of the literature regarding the Guantian Water Chestnut Festival, and a semi-structured in-depth interview with the director of Guantian District Office was conducted to understand the history of the Festival and promotion experience. The results of the study showed that the number of personnel and funds of the reformed district public office itself decreased. Although the municipal government has more administrative resources in the public sector, there is a continued need for the horizontal coordination function and is limited by the municipal government's decision-making framework. When the district office undertakes the implementation of the public tourism policy, it needs to cooperate with the nongovernmental organizations and apply for funds from the municipal government. In addition, their own financial resources cannot be used autonomously. The District Office can extend the experience of cooperation with relevant faculties and students of universities and colleges, establish a partnership platform mechanism, and assist in event planning and innovation. And strengthen the official Guantian Water Chestnut season series activities, or the promotion capabilities of Guantian District Office and the effectiveness of tourism experience design.
Mazibuko, Vusi Phillip. "Towards an index to assess the novelty value of the investment in World Cup Stadia." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/2635.
Full textThe costs of bidding to host mega sporting events such as the Olympics and FIFA World cups are huge. The demand for massive infrastructure to deliver such games is high irrespective of slow economic growth and constrained fiscal budgets. Very few governments are able to properly assess the actual economic value of the investments in infrastructure. The existing infrastructure appraisal and prioritisation methodologies usually take a very narrow view of value. There is scholarly evidence that there is little effort directed towards studies that investigate intangible benefits associated with infrastructural investment in stadia. Much research effort has been invested in the development of methods and models to measure the economic impacts of mega events. While the focus has been, on balance, on financial benefits of hosting mega events, the independent empirical research has found no evidence of economic benefits associated with mega sport events. This study then determined, first the conceptual definition, and the nature of novelty value derived from infrastructural investment. Secondly, an index was constructed to assess the novelty value of infrastructural investment on stadia. The index creation process commenced with the identification of items that define the concept from literature. This was followed by interviews of key informants who are experts and insightful on world cup stadia infrastructural investment. The themes from literature as well as insights from key informants shaped the survey instrument for the second phase of the study. A sample (n =399) was drawn from the study population which is made up of patrons of Moses Mabhida stadium. Factor analysis, a multivariate analytical tool was used to develop a reliable novelty value index (V-ndex). The constructed index has three valid and reliable constructs; spectator experience, novelty continuance and modernity. These three construct define the nonfinancial value, which this study describes as novelty value derived from infrastructural investment. It is therefore recommended that when policy makers seek to assess the value of infrastructural investment on sporting facilities, they incorporate non financial value to the financial value added by investment.
