Abstract:
The present study investigated the impact of bumping on union member (N = 100) perceptions of job security, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, union commitment and organizational justice. Analysis revealed a negative correlation between bumping experience and organizational commitment and job satisfaction (at the .05 level). There was a similar negative relationship between bumping and both union commitment and organizational justice at the .10 level. MANCOVA found that organizational commitment and job satisfaction levels were higher for union members without bumping experience versus those with either direct or indirect bumping experience. No significant differences were found on any variable between union members who were directly involved in bumping and those who were indirectly involved.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Hans de Wit
The family ownership context has been investigated across many business settings, within the manufacturing, trade, and services industries. The consensus among scholars has been that families that own and operate firms act in self-serving ways and frame organizational problems and make decisions with the primary goal of satisfying the family’s affective needs, i.e., preserve or augment what is referred to as socioemotional wealth. However, the theoretical reasoning of socioemotional wealth theory may fall apart in traditional university settings, where self-serving behaviors may lead to (pronounced) agency conflict. Universities have been long understood for their politicized governance environs in which multiple stakeholder groups have representation in decision-making. Within this reality, families involved in higher education management may be challenged to act self-servingly and protect or enhance certain socioemotional wealth. They may need to act in altruistic ways to avoid agency conflict. I investigate whether this is the case through a single, critical case study approach conducted at one family-owned or -managed university in India. I rely on what Yin (2003) refers to as “rival explanation as patterns” to test socioemotional theory relative to a rival theoretical framework. I ask the important question of whether this rival theory can address the limitations of socioemotional wealth theory when applied to the higher education context. As expected, findings generally suggest that where socioemotional wealth theory fails to capture family decision-making behaviors, the rival theory is relevant. This finding is important to consider and has several implications to theory, practice, and future research. Importantly, the findings support that current family-owned business theorizing is not enough to capture family decision-making behaviors in the context of traditional university settings

Abstract:
In the opening chapter the following issues are addressed: * Problem of the research. The problem in this research is: - to determine whether parents and teachers work together in the education of the child. - to determine whether parents and teachers utilise the available structures created for parental involvement. - to establish whether parents can contribute effectively towards the positive learning of the child. * Aims of the research. The purpose of this study is: - to determine the structures in the educational system for parent participation in the education of the child. - to identify problems which hinder meaningful •Black parental involvement in the education of the child. - to propose possible solutions in order to remedy problems which have been identified. * Method of research The following methods have been employed: - Literature study, questionnaires, analysis of responses, interpretation of data, evaluation of data and scientific writing of findings. * Demarcation of the field of research This study is confined to Black parental involvement in the Department of Education and Training. In the second chapter the theoretical structures of parental involvement in the education of the child are discussed. The four structural moments of the educational system are looked into under the theoretical structure of the education system. The following are those structural moments of the educational system: - The religious structural moment. The religious ground motif of the community is fundamental in all national systems of education. All systems of education which function normally are based upon the religious ground motif. - The temporal structural moment. The temporal structural moment refers to the fact that educational systems are time-bound. - The modal structural moment. This structural moment refers to the 15 modal aspects of reality which influence the structure and content of the educational system. - The individual structural moment. The individual structural moment refers to the fact that everything in the cosmos, just like the educational system, has its identity as the system of education. Various other relevant aspects have been discussed in this chapter. A historical perspective of Black education is made in chapter 3. The primary aim of tracing the development of Black education is to discover whether there was any meaningful Black parental involvement in the education of the child. In the course of discussion of this historical development it became evident that the system of Black education developed from the missionary education, the education of the provincial administration and the Bantu Education era. The structures of Black education system is explained with emphasis on the problems and solutions of Black parental involvement in the education of the child. In chapter 4 the research investigation is made. The results of the responses are critically analysed and objective evaluation are made. Constant reference is made to the hypothesis postulated and the theoretical principles of the structures of parental involvement. Chapter 5 deals with the conclusions, findings and recommendations. This implies that all relevant issues raised in all chapters are summarised and recommendations are also made.

Abstract:
Few studies of learning styles among adults with special needs exist worldwide. Even though there are large numbers of adults with special needs, this population in university education has been largely ignored in educational research. Therefore, this study aimed to gather and analyze learning styles of adult special needs students and to provide data for researchers interested in the fields of learning styles, adult education, and special education. This study examined the learning style patterns among special needs adult students at King Saud University as measured by the dimensions of the Index of Learning Styles, which include active/reflective, sensing/intuitive, visual/verbal, and sequential/global dimensions. The study also included variables of gender, age, special need conditions, and years studying in the university. The research questions were (a) What are the learning style patterns among special needs students at King Saud University? (b) Are there differences in the learning style patterns among special needs students at King Saud University by gender? (c) Are there differences in the learning style patterns among special needs students at King Saud University by age? (d) Are there differences in the learning style patterns among special needs students at King Saud University by special need condition (visual, hearing, physical, or other)? and (e) Are there differences in the learning style patterns among special needs students at King Saud University by their years attending the university? The participants of this study were 168 special needs students at King Saud University from different majors and colleges during spring semester 2017. The questionnaire was distributed electronically to the students through the Offices of Special Needs. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t tests, one-way ANOVAs, and chi-square tests of independence. The study discussed the learning styles of the participants and found the majority of participants were balanced learners. There were no statistically significant differences in the variable of gender. On the other hand, the study found there were significant differences on the variables of age and special need conditions on the visual/verbal dimension; and years studying in university on the sensing/intuitive and visual/verbal dimension.

Abstract:
Section 29(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 states that everyone has the right to basic education. ―Everyone‖ includes disabled learners. The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent the state complies with its constitutional and international obligations to realise disabled learners‘ right to basic education. To reach the purpose firstly it has to be ascertained which legislation apply to disabled learners (whether direct or indirect) and how this legislation define disability (Chapter 2). Secondly the relevant constitutional sections have to be investigated. Sections 9, 28, 29 and 36 of the Constitution will be examined in particular. The purpose of the investigation of the constitutional sections is to determine what basic education entails and if there is a uniform definition thereof. Paired with the right to education, the meaning of inclusive education has to be determined and to what extent the state realises this (Chapter 3). A further purpose with the investigation of the constitutional provisions is to determine whether there is an infringement of disabled learners‘ right to equality and whether the possible infringements of the right to education and equality can be justified by the state (Chapter 4). Thirdly, the state‘s international obligations with regard to disabled learners‘ right to education and equality has to be investigated (Chapter 5) before reaching a conclusion as to what extent the state complies with its constitutional and international obligations to realize disabled children‘s right to basic education (Chapter 6). Disabled children‘s need for basic education has led to the research question. quality, process quality, manufacturing process flow, principles of quality, factor analysis, multiple regression.

Abstract:
Within the educational community, there is a growing shift towards the development of essential skills, emphasizing process-skills over mastery of content. This shift is mirrored in the rapid changes in workplace-related technology, outpacing the creativity and flexibility of current graduates. Makerspaces and related technology education approaches have been increasingly implemented to offer students opportunities for developing these desired skills. Parallel to this effort, students who receive special education services but access the general education curriculum continue to lag behind the general education population in high-stakes testing, graduation-rates, and long-term employment outcomes. Remediation-based services often preclude students receiving services from exposure to technology- or other enrichment-based educational opportunities. The initial phase of this exploratory case study focused on the impacts of a technology-based enrichment club on a small group of special education learners. Through this proof-of-concept study, it became apparent that adult participants across stakeholder groups were showing evidence of transformative learning through their experiences with the club. The follow-up study, therefore, focused on changes in adult perceptions and/or practices resulting from these experiences, as evidenced through the Nerstrom Transformative Learning Model (2014). Following exposure, interviews were conducted with participating cosponsors, school-based educational leaders, and guest presenters from technical fields. These interviews were analyzed for both commonly identified and group-specific themes. Results suggest that experiences with the club challenged various assumptions held by participants, often leading to new perspectives on special education practices and students who receive services. These results suggest that potential shifts are a function of how many established perspective-based obstacles these challenged and reformed assumptions can address. Recommendations for future research include replication, extension beyond a club setting, and further exploration of identified themes, as well as investigating the deeper implications of obstacles to transformative learning.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part, we study a class of special functions Aik (y), k = 2, 4, 6, ··· generalising the classical Airy function Ai(y) to higher orders and in the second part, we apply expressions and properties of Ai4(y) to spectral problem of a specific operator. The first part is however motivated by latter part. We establish regularity properties of Aik (y) and particularly show that Aik (y) is smooth, bounded, and extends to the complex plane as an entire function, and obtain pointwise bounds on Aik (y) for all k. Some analytic properties of Aik (y) are also derived allowing one to express Aik (y) as a finite sum of certain generalised hypergeometric functions. We further obtain full asymptotic expansions of Aik (y) and their first derivative Ai'(y) both for y > 0 and for y < 0. Using these expansions, we derive expressions for the negative real zeroes of Aik (y) and Ai'(y). Using expressions and properties of Ai4(y), we extensively study spectral properties of a non-local operator H whose physical interpretation is the massless relativistic quartic anharmonic oscillator in one dimension. Various spectral results for H are derived including estimates of eigenvalues, spectral gaps and trace formula, and a Weyl-type asymptotic relation. We study asymptotic behaviour, analyticity, and uniform boundedness properties of the eigenfunctions Ψn(x) of H. The Fourier transforms of these eigenfunctions are expressed in two terms, one involving Ai4(y) and another term derived from Ai4(y) denoted by Āi4(y). By investigating the small effect generated by Āi4(y) this work shows that eigenvalues λn of H are exponentially close, with increasing n Ε N, to the negative real zeroes of Ai4(y) and those of its first derivative Ai'4(y) arranged in alternating and increasing order of magnitude. The eigenfunctions Ψ(x) are also shown to be exponentially well-approximated by the inverse Fourier transform of Ai4(|y| - λn) in its normalised form.
