It is widely believed that AI is about to revolutionise military operations. Many scholars have claimed that AI-enabled lethal autonomous weapons, especially drone swarms, are about to take over the battlefield. This article assesses the merits of those claims in relation to urban operations. Examining the cases of the Joint Special Operations Command in Baghdad in 2004-08 and the IDF's Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021, it argues that AI will primarily be for military intelligence and targeting, rather than lethal autonomy.

Because of this approach, specialization training after completion of the Air Force Intelligence Officer Course has become crucial to intelligence officer success at the unit level. Abstract:
AbstractEarly detection and identification of plant pathogens is one of the most important strategies for sustainable plant disease management. Fast, sensitive, and accurate methods that are cost-effective are crucial for plant disease control decision-making processes. Coffee leaf rust (CLR) caused by Hemileia vastatrix is a devastating worldwide fungal disease which causes serious yield losses of coffee, especially relevant for Coffea arabica. A rapid PCR assay for detecting and characterizing H. vastatrix with high specificity, high sensitivity and simple operation has been developed based on specific amplification of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal genes. The specificity of the primers was determined using isolates DNA of H. vastatrix, Coleosporium plumeriae, and other fungal species that infect coffee plants and are common in coffee leaves, such as Lecanicillium sp (the H. vastatrix hyperparasite fungi), Cercospora coffeicola, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, amongst others. Results showed specific amplification of a 396-bp band from H. vastatrix DNA with a detection limit of 10 pg/μl of pure genomic DNA of the pathogen. The PCR assay described in the current chapter allows to detect H. vastatrix rapidly and reliably in naturally infected coffee tissues, vital for the early detection and diagnostics of H. vastatrix and CLR epidemiology.

Abstract:
AbstractSome of the most significant high-level properties of currencies are the sums of certain account balances. Properties of such sums can ensure the integrity of currencies and transactions. For example, the sum of balances should not be changed by a transfer operation. Currencies manipulated by code present a verification challenge to mathematically prove their integrity by reasoning about computer programs that operate over them, e.g., in Solidity. The ability to reason about sums is essential: even the simplest ERC-20 token standard of the Ethereum community provides a way to access the total supply of balances.Unfortunately, reasoning about code written against this interface is non-trivial: the number of addresses is unbounded, and establishing global invariants like the preservation of the sum of the balances by operations like transfer requires higher-order reasoning. In particular, automated reasoners do not provide ways to specify summations of arbitrary length. In this paper, we present a generalization of first-order logic which can express the unbounded sum of balances. We prove the decidablity of one of our extensions and the undecidability of a slightly richer one. We introduce first-order encodings to automate reasoning over software transitions with summations. We demonstrate the applicability of our results by using SMT solvers and first-order provers for validating the correctness of common transitions in smart contracts.

Abstract:
AbstractWhat is the reason for recent prodemocracy causes failing to push through? Frameshift does not suffice in itself to break the deadlock and implement social change. A second way out of the simplex, and effective in combination with frameshift, is to move sphere. This operation concentrates on the second dimension of validity, following social analysis. An example is an ecological intervention leaving party politics behind to engage with the judicial sphere, where sanctions are imposed on a failing government.Enlightenment and Marxism were feats of de-simplication to achieve freedom and equality respectively. The first matrix on free-thinking individuals taking rational decisions deconstructed collective traditions, specifically the religious simplexes of evil and sin. The second matrix rejected the employees’ obedience to the employer by revealing that the former were the actual sources of the latter’s capital because they produced commodities. Is the battle inevitable between the two matrixes, the West’s twin paradigms, the French Revolution’s first two values? The third value of inclusion, a necessity since globalization, turns out to be the missing link to uphold the other two values. A mysterious logic transpires in our structuralist analysis: ‘The sources of reason are collectively produced.’ To escape Luhmann’s dilemma stating ‘No inclusion without exclusion’, we have to shift our attention to the species, the source of collective reason, situated in the future. The species has a common fate. The chapters of Part II illustrate how to think inclusively; how to be ‘tensorial’.

Abstract:
Since 1986, the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has been employed by the military for carrying out a range of challenging tasks key to counterterrorism efforts. These Special Operations Forces (SOF) represent a unique group within the military and has traditionally been considered highly resistant to deleterious effects of both physical and psychological strain; however, recent figures suggest a rise in suicides within special operators. Increasingly, suicide prevention efforts within the military have focused more explicitly on enhancing resilience rather than decreasing suicide risk. In line with this newer mentality, SOCOM has developed the Preservation of the Force and Family (POTFF). The POTFF program aims to enhance the service member’s resilience by addressing four domains: physical performance, psychological performance, social performance, and spiritual performance. The rationale and design of the POTFF program is reviewed in this chapter. Future directions and challenges associated with this effort are also discussed.

This chapter details how the U.S. intervention in Iraq completed a full cycle through the information practice framework between 2003 and 2008. During the invasion and its aftermath, managed practice turned into insulated practice, which prompted both internal and external actors to adapt. During the subsequent occupation, adaptive practice turned into problematic practice, which in turn encouraged the U.S. military to institutionalize doctrinal reforms. The chapter explores the ways in which insulated practice still persisted at the end of this process, curiously enough, even in a tactical unit close to the fight that had ample opportunity to make sense of facts on the ground. It also surveys the Special Operations Task Force's (SOTF) information system and then compares the SOTF to other units that conducted a similar mission (Joint Special Operations Command, JSOC) or operated in the same environment (U.S. Marines) to demonstrate how different institutional choices can generate different qualities of information practice.

Abstract:
A technique of extending the interpattern association (IPA) model to construct a phase-only composite filter is given. By using the logical operation rules on a set of Fourier spectral (i.e., training set), the special and the common phase features of the training set can be determined. Then, by applying the extended IPA model on the special and the common phase features, a large capacity phase-only composite fiiter can be constructed. Computer simulation results from using this model are given, and the information capacity of the extended IPA composite filter is calculated.

Abstract The offshore wind industry is promoting developments in environmental sensing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, to better detect the presence of marine and avian species. Environmental sensing technologies (e.g., radar, video and infra-red imagery, passive acoustics, and radio telemetry) have advanced where wildlife are reliably detected and tracked, aiding their protection by minimizing conflicts with ships, other users of the ocean space, and other stressors. Significant marine ecosystem data is collected daily offshore from a wide range of reputable sources. These dis

Abstract All different production processes have one thing in common: in each case a workpiece with characteristic material behavior, stress, strain, self-hardening and temperature will be produced by a tool with special geometry and individual kinematic conditions, with a wide range of energy in a designed machine tool which is working along programmed lines. For the workpiece material, it is not important from which machine the energy is coming. To be able to predict more accurate values of the production process, it will be necessary to focus more on the complex and difficult process mechan

Special station-keeping requirements must be defined for a safe operation of a DP pipe-laying and crane barge. When a pipe is being laid in shallow waters, small displacements of the launching ramp may induce large forces on the pipe or even to deviate it from the defined route. Offshore crane operations are performed in close proximity with other vessel or platform, and large loads are transported in a pendulum configuration. Again, a precise positioning of the barge is required, in order to avoid unsafe relative motions, as well as keep the load being transported on a stable position. Due to
