Abstract:

Abstract:

Current State of Terminology in Lithuania: Scientific Research, Management and Education The article discusses the current state of terminology in Lithuania, presents terminological research carried out in the last five years, analyses ways of Lithuanian terminology management, and briefly overviews terminological education and teaching in Lithuania.Lithuanian terminological research is mostly carried out at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and at universities and other research institutes. The largest part of terminological research is carried out at the Centre of Terminology of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, which researches Lithuanian terminology and terminography, analyses the use of Lithuanian terminology in different fields.Three ways of terminology management are discussed: terminography, creation of term banks and databases and standardisation of terms.The number of term dictionaries published in Lithuania is rather considerable – over 600. The most productive period for publishing term dictionaries is from 1990 up to date. Between 1990–2013 more than 420 term dictionaries and special encyclopaedias were published.The main and most important terminology database in Lithuania is the Term Bank of the Republic of Lithuania (lt Lietuvos Respublikos terminų bankas, further – LTB), initiated in 2004. This bank is created as a common information system of state institutions administered by the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (further – Language Commission). There are more than 237,000 term entries in LTB. The article discusses two more terminology databases containing Lithuanian terminology sources – IATE and EUROTERMBANK. The Lithuanian Standards Board, in addition to other work, prepares Lithuanian standards of terms and offers these terms to the Language Commission for evaluation. Since 2000, the Lithuanian Standards Board has been creating a database of standardised terms which currently contains about 64,000 terms.In Lithuania, terminology also exists as an academic discipline; at many universities, philologists are offered a course in terminology. At many universities, students of other non-philological disciplines are taught a course in language for specific purposes, which covers matters of terminology and terms. Aktualny stan terminologii na Litwie: badania naukowe, zarządzanie informacją i edukacja Artykuł omawia aktualny stan terminologii na Litwie, przedstawia badania naukowe nad zasobami terminologicznymi prowadzone w okresie minionych pięciu lat, analizuje sposoby zarządzania terminami w języku litewskim, a także zawiera zwięzły przegląd tematyki dotyczącej kształcenia i nauczania w zakresie terminologii na Litwie.Główną placówką zajmującą się badaniami nad terminologią w języku litewskim jest Instytut Języka Litewskiego. Ponadto badania takie prowadzone są także na uniwersytetach i w innych ośrodkach badawczych. Największy udział w badaniach terminologicznych ma Zakład Terminologii w Instytucie Języka Litewskiego, który prowadzi prace nad terminologią litewską i terminografią, a także analizuje użycie litewskiego słownictwa specjalistycznego w poszczególnych dziedzinach.W artykule omówiono trzy metody zarządzania zasobami terminologicznymi: terminografia, powoływanie banków terminów i baz danych oraz standaryzacja terminów i pojęć.Liczba słowników terminologicznych opublikowanych na Litwie jest dość znaczna, jest ich obecnie ponad 600. Najwięcej publikacji pochodzi z okresu po roku 1990. Począwszy od 1990 do 2013 r. ukazało się drukiem ponad 420 słowników i specjalistycznych encyklopedii terminologicznych.Główną i najważniejszą bazą terminów na Litwie jest Terminologiczna Baza Republiki Litewskiej (lt Lietuvos Respublikos terminų bankas, dalej: LTB), powstała w 2004 r. Została ona utworzona jako wspólny informatyczny system instytucji państwowych pod patronatem Państwowej Komisji Języka Litewskiego (dalej: Komisja Języka). W LTB znajduje się ponad 237 000 haseł terminologicznych.Artykuł omawia dalej kolejne dwie bazy danych, które zawierają litewskie źródła terminologii, a mianowicie IATE i EUROTERMBANK. Litewska Rada Standaryzacji oprócz innych prac przygotowuje litewskie standardy terminów i przedstawia je Komisji Języka do oceny. Od roku 2000 Litewska Rada Standaryzacji tworzy bazę standaryzowanych terminów, która aktualnie obejmuje 64 000 haseł.Na Litwie terminologia istnieje także jako odrębna dyscyplina akademicka. Na wielu uniwersytetach w programie studiów prowadzone są przez filologów zajęcia z tego zakresu. Na licznych uczelniach studenci kierunków niefilologicznych mają wykłady w zakresie stosowania terminów specjalistycznych, obejmujące kwestie terminologiczne i dotyczące zasobu pojęć.

Abstract:

The article discusses selected issues concerning the Uralic terminology, focusing on Polish terms and names. We understand Uralic studies as both a study programme and a scholarly line of research. In Section 2 of the paper, we delimit a general point of reference for the Uralic terminology, whereas Section 3 provides an overview of specific terminological problems related to the labelling of Uralic languages and ethnolects, with special emphasis on the Finno-Ugric group. We conclude that the Polish Uralic terminology lacks a number of relevant Uralic names/labels/terms and champions its own idiosyncratic terminological solutions. Further standardisation and internationalisation of the Uralic terms in Polish are recommended. Wybrane problemy i przykłady terminologii uralistycznej. Streszczenie: Analizie zostają poddane wybrane problemy terminologiczne w kontekście uralistyki rozumianej zarówno jako kierunek studiów uniwersyteckich, jak i specjalizacja badawcza ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem terminologii polskiej. Po wstępnych poszukiwaniach mniej lub bardziej ogólnych terminów na odniesienia do przedmiotu badań i studiów uralistycznych (część 2) następuje bardziej szczegółowy przegląd nazw języków uralskich, przede wszystkim podgrupy ugrofińskiej (część 3). W obu przypadkach stwierdza się albo brak nazw szeregu języków, pojęć i zjawisk, albo znikomą korelację między terminami w języku polskim i innych językach, a zwłaszcza w fińskim, angielskim i rosyjskim. Postuluje się dalszą standaryzację i internacjonalizację polskiej terminologii uralistycznej. Abstract:

Professional communication between an expert and a non-expert, the so-called transdiscursive communication, presupposes special knowledge transfer and acquisition. Asymmetry in communicants’ knowledge causes ambiguity and conceptual misrepresentation. Precise knowledge transfer in the context of transdiscursive communication can be achieved by means of knowledge mediation. In this context metaphor accomplishes the function of a transdiscursive knowledge mediation tool. This cognitive mechanism encourages conceptual mapping of specialized knowledge from a routine area to some knowledge domain. The study of metaphoricity of terms provides ground for finding language tools for cognition management. For discourse analyses we have focused on specialized texts from scientific journals and popular magazines obtained from the Corpus of Contemporary American English as a result of the key word in context search. We aim at proving the evidence for special knowledge mediation necessity and efficiency in the context of transdiscursive communication.

Abstract:

Terminology is reaching an important moment in its development. Within firms, new terminological needs are appearing which go beyond those of traditional translation departments. Thanks to the results of natural-language processing (NLP) and knowledge acquisition and representation in artificial intelligence (AI), new possibilities for integrating terminological data are coming to light. In order to meet these new needs, it is necessary to approach the analysis of phenomena with strong theoretical bases. The article proposes to root terminology firmly within linguistics, while paying special attention to the specific link of terminology with knowledge. In limited fields, the strong link between linguistic signs and concepts permits linguistic research to put forward hypotheses concerning the extraction of terms, of links between terms and concepts, and of relations between concepts. It is necessary to elaborate a methodology for a linguistic analysis of how terms function. By developing the notion of "deviance " (deviant behaviour of the terminological system in comparison with the expected behaviour of the lexical system), the article presents a first linguistically based classification.

Terms and concepts organize the representation of the world and are part of relationships of contiguity, synonymy or even identity. Commercial job naming is no exception. But there is not one, but several terminologies. The company is the most representative witness to the evolution of terminology in this field, an evolution linked to the organization of the profession, the company and more generally society. Understanding the use, the motivation for the choice of these concepts, their dynamics, the type of relationship that unites them is a matter of socioterminology. Interest in velocity anisotropy increased sharply among exploration seismologists following publication in 1986 of evidence for azimuthal anisotropy in sedimentary rocks. This increased level of interest generated a need for a glossary of anisotropy terminology in the language of geophysicists. This glossary is to: • help geophysicists find proper words • promote correct usage. The introduction preceding the alphabetically organized glossary focuses on concepts that have special importance for anisotropy but may be unfamiliar to most geophysicists. Symmetry concepts receive special emphasis because of their fundamental importance.

Abstract:

The research is devoted to the study of special vocabulary used in English chess terminology. It analyzes the lexical and semantic aspects, develops criteria for the functional and stylistic differentiation of special units of chess terms, and identifies the appropriate links between special units. Using the field principle allows the distribution of chess terms to the core, near, far, and extreme peripheries. Chess terms are designed in the form of a ring diagram. The novelty of the research lies in the proposed scheme of systematization of special lexical units of the subject area and the construction of the lexico-semantic field ‘Chess game’ in the English language. The materials for the analysis were taken from modern English, American and German chess sources: British Chess Magazine, Chess Life Magazine, Rochade Europa, Schach Magazin 64 as well as chess dictionaries. The number of analyzed chess terms is about seven thousand, which is 45% of the total number of titles. The author concludes that different types of units in chess terminology are heterogeneous. Chess terms have many characteristics, ranging from highly specialized terms to slang expressions and nicknames.

Terminology, as a scientific discipline, is an important source of lexical enrichment for the Arabic language. The rapid development of science and technology has led to more than 90% of new words in modern languages being technical terms, highlighting the dynamic growth of specialized vocabulary. Despite the support of traditional linguistic academies, scientific and technological progress has resulted in the widespread borrowing of foreign terms. However, their adaptation has been accompanied by the emergence of synonymous designations, caused by the lack of standardized translation practices and terminological uncertainty.

Abstract:

The aim of the article is to focus on the priorities of modern Ukrainian terminology science. Relevance. Without understanding the tasks of terminology science as a special branch of scientific knowledge, it is impossible to fully study any terminology system of the modern Ukrainian language. There singled out the tasks of modern Ukrainian terminology science, the implementation of which in examining specific terminology is a prerequisite for a holistic research of a small terminological fragment, which will contribute to the cognition and comprehensive study of the entire array of the Ukrainian scientific and technical terminology, including: 1) сlassifying special vocabulary (terms, nomens, industry words); 2) standardization of the TS; 3) improvement of comparative research methods; 4) compilation of terminology dictionaries; 6) study of linguistic factors relevant to the establishment and development of terminology; 7) clarification of extralinguistic factors significant for terminology. Conclusions. To date, terminology science has emerged as an independent scientific direction with its terminological apparatus and theoretical and methodological principles of research of its specific subject — terminologies and terms. One of the main tasks of modern domestic terminology science can be considered examining industry terminology systems as fragments of a common scientific terminology system, due to the study of which it will be possible to speak of a holistic research of the terminology system of the language as a whole.

In Ukrainian linguistics, there have been various studies of special relationships to the individual subdivisions of linguistic terminology; the internal and inter-systemic semantic connections of terms, their special relations to commonly used forms, the formation and historical development of linguistic terminology, their origin and function, and the organization of systematic structures. More particularly, in the late 20th century, the study of various structural-semantic and functional features that appear in the study of Ukrainian terminology was intensified. Therefore, terminology will refer to the actual areas of linguistics, especially historical terminology. This article will provide an overview of the linguistic works of several Ukrainian scholars, including V. V. Derkach, O. A. Katsimon, N. A. Lyashuk, O. V. Medved, N. A. Moskalenko, L. V. Rohach, L. V. Turovska, H. M. Tsyhanok, Yu. A. Chernobrov, V. Y. Chykut, D. B. Yakymovych-Chapran, I. A. Yaroshevych, V. V. Zakharchyn, I. I. Ohiyenko, S. M. Polyuha, whose works consider the linguistic terminology from the 20th to the beginning of the 21 th century. The object is to give a dissertation of scientists of the 20th to the beginning of the 21th century and to analyze the subjects and the methods of these scholars’ works. This study looks at the impact of the work of these scholars and highlights their influence on the development of Ukrainian linguistics over the years. This is done through a categorization of the linguistic systems that these many of these scholars took interest in, as well as those that they did not, but may have overlooked. Some more detailed classification criteria are presented, including phonetical, grammatical, morphological, and syntactic terminological vocabularies and groups of terminologies that are used in the writings of specific scholars or in specific territories. This allows us to observe the development of Ukrainian terminology from various angles.

Abstract:

Traditional "theory " of terminology, as far as I understand it, has two shortcomings. The first, which is now pointed out by many researchers, is that the way in which the study of terms is viewed is too restricted, and the descriptive means such as "concepts" are not rich enough. This becomes clear if one faces actual terms as empirical objects. The second shortcoming is that there is no guarantee in the "theoretical" framework itself that the resultant description can logically be claimed to be about terms and/or terminology. Abstract:

This article appeared on the several sciences border: clinical anatomy, clinical physiology and philology. Accordingly, its authors are a clinician, a teacher of higher education and a philologist. The authors critically analyze some of the Ukrainian (Greek and Latin derivative) terms based on special literature and writing sources, philology works and their own experience. At the same time, they substantiate every nation’s right to introduce terms into their special scientific nomenclature that are more common in this language, folk household, in accordance with their ideas. The authors call for the correction of some Ukrainian and Latin terms indicating inflammation, as well as - to distinguish adjectives in the clinical and anatomical nomenclature of ones that indicate quality from those indicating the relation, belonging to a particular subject, formation, phenomenon. The terms in the Ukrainian language was often formed under other languages influence and sound sometimes wrong, so it makes sense to replace some medical terms with new, correct ones. It seems like some, firmly rooted terms, require some correction. First of all, as already mentioned, those of them that are based on subject analogies (analog terminology). To develop the Ukrainian language in all spheres of science, including medical science language is our duty. And the work on Ukrainian medical terminology improving is a permanent process, as well as the society development in general.

The article presents a study that focuses on approaches to rendering Ukrainian historical terminology related to the Old Rus' period into English selected en masse from Ukrainian and English academic texts on history, with a special focus on culture-specific terminology. Historical terms for translation purposes are categorised into non-culture-specific historical terminology reflecting universal concepts of historical science, and culture-specific historical terminology. The purpose of the article is to determine specific methods for Ukrainian-English translation of historical terminology of the Old Rus' period. The paper discusses approaches and methods used by English-speaking academics to secondary term formation, taking place when rendering concepts denoting Ukrainian original culture-specific terminology into English. Different groups of historical terms are described with a special focus on onomastic terminology. It is demonstrated that the historical context should be taken into account for the correct designation of a historical concept. Non-culture-specific historical terminology is predominantly rendered by existing equivalents, which were formed through phonological adaptation and/or calque translation. The most appropriate technique for rendering culture-specific Ukrainian historical terminology is shown to be combined renomination, the method that uses both a transcription and a description of a historical concept.

In connection with the deepening globalization processes and the interaction of scientists from different countries, the linguistic terminology systems of modern Slavic languages in the second half of the XX and at the beginning of the XXI century have been enlarged with new special units, which causes quantitative and qualitative changes in their composition, interest in the problems of the origin, formation and dynamics of this terminology system. The purpose of the study is to establish the regularity of the terminological nomination of linguistic concepts in the Middle and Modern Polish periods (XVI century – 1939). Taking into account the internal and external linguistic factors that influenced the formation and functioning of linguistics terminology in the Polish language, the basic methods of term formation (semantic, morphological, syntactic) are analyzed, confirming, on the one hand, the connection with the common language, and on the other hand, the uniqueness and specificity of the subject linguistic terminology corpus. The consolidation of a special nomination in Polish linguistic terminology at different chronological sections took place in stages. The transition of special words from one category to another (preterms → quasi-terms → terms) displays a system of complex changes in the branched term system of the subject area of linguistics.

The article addresses the issues of the particular terminology for fire forensic investigations. Definitions for the basic parameters of a fire hazardous area, determining its susceptibility to ignition, and their relationship to the impulses initiating such areas’ combustion are analyzed.Two main tasks of forensic fire examinations are reviewed: establishing the technical cause of a fire, its organizational cause, and consequences. The author gives definitions for these tasks and the term “ignition source”.The paper’s relevance stems from the need to prevent mistakes in terminology when conducting a forensic fire investigation. Abstract:

The article is devoted to the formation of the terminology of jazz as a musical genre in the English-language media discourse in the first half of the 20th century. Modern studies of terminology show that terms are associated with special vocabulary and professional communication, and can transfer to terminology from the common language. Professional vocabulary, in turn, belongs to special vocabulary along with terms, but the former can also become the latter in the absence of a terminological equivalent. In art terminology, including musical terminology, a large number of professionalisms are noted. Of musical terminology, the terminology of jazz is of particular interest since its formation took place at the junction of classical musical terminology and English-language professional vocabulary. The article compares three periods in the development of jazz music as presented in the media and describes the formation of jazz terminology in media discourse. The material under study is archival texts of American newspapers of the first half of the 20th century devoted to jazz, which were divided into three sub-corpuses in accordance with the period of publication (1900-1920, 1920-1945, 1945-1950). The contexts of the use of jazz music nominations were extracted from this material, and the nominations were divided into groups: classical and non-classical terms, borrowed and English-language terms. The research methods used include content analysis, component analysis, analysis of vocabulary and contextual definitions. The study revealed that the terminology of jazz of the first half of the 20th century is mainly represented by English-language non-classical nominations and, to a lesser extent, by classical terms from the European academic musical tradition.

Applying consistent terminology for morphological traits across different taxa is a highly pertinent task in the study of morphology and evolution. Different terminologies for the same traits can generate bias in phylogeny and prevent correct homology assessments. This situation is exacerbated in the male genitalia of Hymenoptera, and specifically in Ichneumonoidea, in which the terminology is not standardized and has not been fully aligned with the rest of Hymenoptera. In the current contribution, we review the terms used to describe the skeletal features of the male genitalia in Hymenoptera, and provide a list of authors associated with previously used terminology. We propose a unified terminology for the male genitalia that can be utilized across the order and a list of recommended terms. Further, we review and discuss the genital musculature for the superfamily Ichneumonoidea based on previous literature and novel observations and align the terms used for muscles across the literature.

Two broad categories are identified: general and specialized translation. Medical translation refers to the subdivisions of translation service provision in relation to healthcare, medical products, biotechnology that involve specific terminology and accurate understanding of medical documents. One of the most important issues of terminology remains term variance (or synonymy). In order to find out the trends of terms usage in the language for specific purposes, the comprehensive analysis of dictionaries, coursebooks, students’ survey was carried out. It allowed to determine prevalent types in the terminology of economics and chemistry, to analyze the prevalence of Lithuanian and international terms synonymy, term usage tendencies in students’ language and academic texts. Summarizing the investigation results it can be stated that in the special language of economics and chemistry, term variants were both presented in dictionaries and used by teachers.

The article analyzes the essence of the definitions "terminology," and "sports terminology" and their meaning for specialists in general and the role of the terminology of movements and the construction of physical exercises in the professional formation and improvement of higher education students of the specialty 017 - Physical culture and sports and 227 - physical therapy, occupational therapy of the first (bachelor's) level of higher education, in particular. Based on the analysis, synthesis and generalization of scientific and scientific-methodological literature, the Internet, as well as the educational programs of the above-mentioned specialities of the first (bachelor) level of higher education, such research methods as comparison, pedagogical observation, analysis of one's own longitudinal pedagogical experience of teaching academic disciplines of practical character, it is determined that the majority of students of higher education do not pay due attention to the acquisition of special terminology during their studies in higher education, and therefore, do not use it at the proper level in the practice of work in their specialty. At the same time, the terminology is always related to the content of specific science, theory and practice. There is the so-called special terminology of an engineer, philologist, lawyer, sociologist, doctor, designer, etc., as well as a specialist in the field of physical education and sports - sports terminology. It is noted that special terminology, including sports terminology, is the basis of professional communication, which requires deep knowledge, constant development and improvement from specialists. Mastering the terminology of movements by future specialists of the specialty 017 - Physical culture and sports and 227 - physical therapy, occupational therapy of the first (bachelor) level of higher education is an urgent necessity because it is the language of these specialties, which allows communication both between specialists and during interaction specialists with those who are learning physical exercises of various orientations. The article highlights the positive experience of solving the problem of forming among future specialists in the field of physical education and sports solid knowledge of the terminology of movements and its practical use during the construction of various physical exercises due to the introduction of a new educational discipline into the educational program according to (the student's choice) "Terminology and construction in physical education and sports." It is emphasized that this is an urgent necessity because the terminology of movements is the language of these specialties, which specialists in their work have to face every day during training and correction of physical exercises.

Digital photography terminology system is an open and quite actively developing system that is shown in the variety of terminological units and means of their formation. In general, the English digital photography terminology can be characterized as dynamical one. The article is devoted to the study of main dynamical processes taking place in the English digital photography terminology system. Special attention is paid to the processes of terminologization, determinologization, terminological borrowings, reterminologization and transterminologization. There is a constant exchange between the general and terminological lexis, as a result of which determinologization of special lexis, terminologization of the general lexis and transterminologization happen. As a result of reterminologization and transterminologizationterminological units with the identical forms, but different meanings appear in variousscientific-technical terminology systems. These processes are mainly responsible for the replenishment and renewal of terminological lexis, including the sphere of digital photography of the modern English language.
