Abstract:
A career as a police officer has served as a legitimate avenue for many Black Americans to elevate themselves from numerous low paying less prestigious jobs, to a more respectable better paying secured occupation that has a higher social economic status. The general perception related to the civil service position of a police officer, suggests that it is an occupation which should offer an environment free from discrimination and nepotism, thereby allowing fair treatment and equal access for advancement to all individuals employed within the police organization. The concept of a police organization that offers fair treatment and equal access for advancement to all of its employees in a climate that is free from discrimination and nepotism is the subject of considerable skepticism among many black police officers. Police departments throughout the United States of America have been challenged by a highly visible accusation of discrimination and nepotism in regards to the selection process and the police personnel selected to become members of elite police specialty units. This thesis traces the historical involvement of black police officers in The United States and their progression to obtain equality and fair treatment as police officers within the law enforcement community. This thesis examines the racial demographics of eighteen (18) police departments located in various sections of the United States and the racial demographics of the elite police specialty units which are incorporated within each police department. In addition, this thesis will analyze collected data from the police departments that participated in the study and determine if the minority representation within each of the police department's elite police specialty units is equal to the general population which the police departments serve and proportionate to the minority representation within the police department. Finally, this thesis will examine data identifying Black American's representation in significant areas of the criminal justice system, thus analyzing the correlation between Black American's over-representation in the criminal components of the criminal justice system and their under-representation within police departments and elite police specialty units.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
Why is it that some military organizations succeed and others do not? What characteristics elude unsuccessful fighting groups that successful ones are able to capture and translate into positive outcomes? The study of organizational theory and design spans the multiple typologies of organizational functions and forms. However, at the foundation of all groups are the individuals and the interaction of those individuals within the organization. Given this, the concept of unit cohesion can provide some insight in the search for discovering what makes organizations successful. Why study unit cohesion within Naval Special Warfare (NSW) operational units? The simple answer is because cohesion can increase performance and effectiveness. Prior to the last century, the concept of unit cohesion was based on the anecdotal observations of military commanders and historians. The rise of the fields of psychology and sociology led to an increase in the study and understanding of unit cohesion. This study utilizes survey research to investigate specific factors related to unit cohesion in NSW operational units and how they are related to current issues in the community. Ultimately, the impacts of these relationships provide a basis for recommendations intended to improve cohesion in, and overall effectiveness of NSW operational units.

Littler, Keith Trevor. "An evaluation of local education authority off-site special units for disruptive pupils." Thesis, University of Hull, 1988. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8400.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned to evaluate Local Education Authority Off-Site Special Units for Disruptive Pupils. By reviewing the relevant literature, and by ascertaining the views of Local Education Authorities, the thesis develops the argument that schools are ambivalent in their reasons for referring disruptive pupils to Off-Site Special Units. Whilst maintaining primary concern for the pupils' reform, a greater concern seems to be evident for the removal of recalcitrant pupils in the best interests of the referring school. Either way, the decision to refer the pupil to an Off-Site Special Unit probably rests upon a failure to appreciate the causes of disruptive behaviour, which in practice are less likely to be explained in pathological terms than in institutional ones. In consequence, the idea that a suitable measure for evaluating units is to be found in rates of successfully reintegrating pupils from units back into mainstream schools is open to question. Since many pupils indicate a desire to return to mainstream school whilst others express a wish to enter employment where recognised patterns of good behaviour are necessary, a criterion for evaluating Off-Site Special Units remains the ability of the Unit to produce behaviour change in pupils attending the Units. The dictum is employed in the present thesis. The Bristol Social Adjustment Guides and a Behaviour Checklist, developed by the writer from one used by the ILEA, are used as before and after measures to show that the behaviour of pupils referred to three Off-Site Special Units in one LEA, does improve during the period of intervention. The behaviour of matched control pupils who remain in mainstream schools does not show a similar improvement. The comments of pupils in the Off-Site Special Units confirm that there are positive gains in the Units.

Helgesen, Ann Karin. "Patient participation in everyday life in special care units for persons with dementia." Doctoral thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-29208.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to acquire knowledge about patient participation in everyday life of persons with dementia living in SCUs in nursing homes. Data collection and analysis in studies I-III was carried out according to Grounded Theory. Data was collected by open non- participant observations during 51 hours, and conversations with 8 residents and 17 health care personnel (I), interviews carried out twice with 12 relatives (II) and 11 nursing personnel (III), and by a study specific questionnaire based on the findings from study I-II to 233 relatives (IV). Descriptive and non-parametric statistics were used (IV). Presence of nursing personnel in body, mind and morality was found to be the prerequisite for patient participation (I). This required personnel with high competence in dementia care, commitment to and interest in the resident, and continuity in their work (I, III). Wellbeing and dignity in the resident’s everyday life was found to be the most important goal, not necessarily a high level of patient participation (II-III). The level of participation had to be adjusted to the resident’s ability and wish to take part in decisions in the very moment. However, the level was often primarily adjusted to suit the personnel’s ideas about how to carry out daily care (I, III). Relatives had an important role in the participation process by interacting, and exchanging information, with the personnel. By forming a basis for individualised care in this way, relatives made a difference to the resident’s everyday life and contributed to their wellbeing and dignity (II-IV). The SCU’s context also affected patient participation (I-IV). Patient participation must be given attention by leaders and be prioritised in dementia care. Nursing personnel can enhance patient participation by promoting relatives’ partaking in the participation process, as this has potential for further contributing to quality of care.

Abstract:
This analysis of secondary data collected from family members of nursing home residents in North Texas (n = 422) used a mixed methods approach to determine if there is a difference in perspectives on quality care among family members of Alzheimer’s/Dementia Special Care Unit (ADSCU) residents compared to those of non-ADSCU residents. Descriptive content analysis was used identify and condense responses to an open-ended question into four meaningful categories of qualities of care. An independent t-test was employed to determine if there was a difference between family members of ADSCU residents and family members of non-ADSCU residents regarding their rating of their loved-ones’ nursing home on the important qualities of care they identified from the open-ended question. Closed-ended questions were organized into indices of these qualities of care, and ordinary least square regression was employed to determine if there were significant differences between perceptions of family members of ADSCU residents and those of non-ADSCU residents regarding care their loved-ones are receiving on these qualities of care, controlling for frequency of visit.

Abstract:
The key research issue of this thesis is what professional key stakeholders perceive as the factors that result in some Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) being more successful than others. This is a qualitative study of data which was collected between 2006 and 2009 using chaos and complexity theory as a theoretical framework. In establishing what a successful PRU is, the study identified two types of PRU provision: - Primary and Key StageS PRUs: staff work to reintegrate students into mainstream schools after a period of intervention. - Key Stage4 PRUs: integration into college or work placement is seen as being more appropriate routes for older students. In addition KS4 PRU provision was perceived more as a 'long-term' provision to provide continuity and stability during the examination period. The study provides a brief overview of early educational provision before looking at the introduction and development of PRUs in England and Wales. The study analyses responses by Estyn and Ofsted HMI teams to quality and standards within PRUs and goes on to present key stakeholder perceptions of PRUs. Factors that impact on the quality of a PRU are then identified and discussed with the main element being identified as the characteristics of the PRU head teacher. Finally the study suggests a new model of leadership and management qualities that contribute to a successful PRU.

Perehudoff, Barbara Elaine. "Parents' perceptions of environmental stressors in the special care nursery." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26134.

Full text
Abstract:
This descriptive comparative and correlational study was designed to determine the degree of environmental stress perceived by mothers and fathers during the first week of their infant's admission to a Special Care Nursery (SCN) and to determine the differences in their perceptions. In addition, the variables of gestational age, birth weight and paternal attitude toward caregiving were investigated for their relationship to the perceived degree of environmental stress. A convenience sample of 31 sets of parents was selected from a tertiary level SCN in a large urban children's hospital. Both parents completed the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Parental Stress Scale and an information sheet; fathers also completed the Paternal Attitude Scale. Overall, mothers and fathers perceived the SCN environment as a low source of stress. Mothers were moderately stressed by their altered parental role. In addition, mothers were significantly more stressed by the environmental aspects of SCN and the total SCN experience than were fathers. Environmental stress arising from staff communications and relations was significantly negatively related to birth weight and gestational age. No significant relationship was found between paternal attitude toward care giving and the fathers' perception of environmental stress.

Lammers, Joyce. "Physical Therapists’ Beliefs about Preparation to Work in Special Care Nurseries and Neonatal Intensive Care Units." Diss., NSUWorks, 2018. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/hpd_pt_stuetd/65.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Physical therapists (PTs) may care for full-term or premature newborns in all levels of hospital nurseries. There is some endorsement in the published physical therapy literature for restricting practice in the nursery setting to only those PTs with specialized training.1-4 PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of becoming and being a physical therapist in a special care nursery (SCN) or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) from the therapists’ perspective. METHODS: The participants were physical therapists who have practiced in a SCN or NICU in the United States. A phenomenological approach was used and data was collected through interviews. The constant comparative method was used to analyze the data and identify common themes to describe therapists’ beliefs about becoming and being a physical therapist in a hospital nursery. RESULTS: These four themes include: 1) Never Alone, which reflects the unique collaborative culture of the NICU; 2) Families First, which speaks to the need to focus on the family, avoid judgment, and facilitate their involvement in the care of their child; 3) Take a Deep Breath, which reflects the need to be mindful and cautious because of the potential to do harm due to the extreme fragility of the infant; and 4) Know What You Don’t Know, which reflects the depth and breadth of knowledge necessary to work in the NICU/SCN. CONCLUSIONS: This project was the first to systematically research practicing therapist’s beliefs and perspectives regarding PT practice in the SCN and NICU. It is evident that current practice does not align with the adopted statements from APTA and APPT, as well as other professional associations. Much evidence draws attention to the fragility of premature neonates, yet our PT practice and education does not appropriately address these concerns.

Abstract:

Mccarty, Catherine Elizabeth. "The Impact of Hospice and Dementia Special Care Units on End-of-Life Care for Individuals with Dementia." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3240.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT Hospice and Dementia Special Care Units (DSCUs) have been shown to be gold standards of care for individuals who are dying and for those with dementia in nursing homes. Using a retrospective administrator and family survey, this study investigated whether the processes of care used in hospice and DSCUs are associated with increased quality of end of life (EOL) care for individuals with dementia. A convenience sample of 17 facilities in four states (FL, PA, MD and MA) was included in the study. Nursing home administrators were surveyed between September 2008 and October 2009. The administrators identified 116 family members of decedents with dementia who were surveyed with the End-of-Life Dementia (EOLD) scale as the outcome. The Donabedian Structure-Process-Outcome theory was used to test the hypothesis that the process characteristics of hospice and DSCU will be associated with higher EOLD scores. Hierarchical regression models were conducted for two of the three subscales of the EOLD. The resident risk characteristics (decedent length of stay and resident immobility), the structure characteristics (profit status, percent Medicaid and presence of other palliation), and the process characteristics (hospice, DSCU, dual, and traditional enrolled, and strength of inter-disciplinary team (IDT)] were entered into the model to determine their association with Satisfaction With Care and Comfort At Death. Strength of the IDT was included as a moderating factor of this association. Only DSCU enrollment was associated with increased Satisfaction With Care (SWC; DSCU: b = .31, p < .01). The moderation analysis showed that strength of IDT did significantly moderate the association between DSCU enrollment and increased SWC (DSCU: b = -.09, p < .05). Study implications include the need for more research into DSCUs and Strength of IDT as best practices in EOL care. This study contributes to an expanding body of research on the extra value of enrollment in a DSCU and the role of IDT in quality of EOL care for individuals with dementia in nursing homes.

Abstract:
In recent years the competition in the manufacturing sector has continually grown stronger. Globalization and increasingly demanding customers have lead to new and bigger challenges for the manufacturing companies. Therefore efficient planning and control systems have become even more important. The so-called PPC system (production planning and controlling system) has become an essential part of the success of a production company. It needs to allow for transparency when planning and controlling different projects. The basis for this research has been the VIP manufacturing company at a large special purpose transport units company, more precisely the department for large special purpose transport unit. The methods, theories and solutions for more transparency have been examined during the literature studies in regard to fitting a VIP production. It is important to notice here that a project at the large special purpose transport unit is a socio-technical system, where human interactions have a great impact on the success of each project. This research focused on the aspect of on-time delivery. How to create more transparency in PPC systems has been examined. Through a participatory research at the large special purpose transport unit, some key elements of a more transparent PPC system have emerged.

Full text
Abstract:
Two aspects of the education of children with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLDs) in Special Classes were examined. The history of provision was briefly reviewed and a survey conducted which compared current provision in Special Care Classes with that in the other classes in Schools for children with severe learning difficulties. It was found that in general the pupils being educated in Special Care Classes had profound and complex handicaps, yet in terms both of teachers and of most multi-professional input Special Care Classes were less well provided for than other classes in SLD schools. One issue raised by the survey was the type of curriculum appropriate for pupils functioning at an extremely early developmental level. An examination of literature relating to this question showed that it was probable that interactions with staff constituted a crucial part of the curriculum for children with PMLDs. Three observation studies of interactions between staff and pupils in five Special Care Classes were carried out using theoretically derived categories which dichotomized interactions according to whether or not they were hypothesized to facilitate development. Both real-time and momentary time-sampling techniques were used in these studies. The results supported the validity of the theoretically derived categories, with relatively more handicapped children in each class experiencing less positive patterns of interaction and children in all classes being more likely to respond to adult initiations which were theoretically likely to promote development. There were, however. also differences between the classes which were probably partly attributable to differences in organization and staffing. It was concluded that the pattern of interaction experienced by an individual child is the result of a complex interaction between a large number of factors. Some suggestions regarding the interactive curriculum for children with PMLDs and appropriate training for teachers of this group are made.

Edge, Shaun Joseph. "The growing role of Special Forces in modern warfare with specific reference to the United States of America." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/27310.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study is to assess the growing role of Special Forces in modern warfare, with specific reference to the United States of America. The main question that the study seeks to address is what are the implications of the growing role of Special Forces in modern warfare? The study also seeks to ascertain why exactly this growth is occurring and whether or not this will have a bearing on the future of not only the manner in which the US conducts conflict but also global conflict as a whole. In order to address these issues the study will look at conventional and unconventional warfare and forces; the roles and missions of Special Forces and the composition of US Special Forces; the role of US Special Forces in modern warfare prior to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks; and the role of the US Special Forces in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan. An analysis of conventional and unconventional warfare as concepts, as well as the forces that constitute conventional and unconventional forces was first done in order to provide some perspective into what these concepts and forces are and more specifically, what differentiates them. Specific reference was made here to the United States’ approach to warfare from the days of the American Revolution up to and including the end of the Cold War. Emphasis is placed on the growing role of US Special Forces throughout the study and this is achieved through the use of four major case studies, namely the 1991 Gulf War; Somalia (1992-1993); the Balkans (1995-2001); and the 2001 ‘Special Forces war’ in Afghanistan. The case studies that dealt with the 1991 Gulf War, Somalia and the Balkans elucidated the growing role of both unconventional warfare and specifically US Special Forces and Special Mission Units since the end of the Cold War. The case study of the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan provided the culmination of the shift from conventional to unconventional warfare and the execution of the campaign as a ‘Special Forces war.’ The study demonstrates that since the end of the Cold War in the 1990’s, unconventional warfare has increasingly become more ubiquitous and can be said to be replacing, or at least equalling in stature, conventional warfare. This has the possibility of dramatically affecting how warfare is executed both currently and more importantly, in the future. The study went on to show that unconventional warfare is not akin to conventional warfare, especially with regard to the forces needed to respond to such conflicts and that Special Forces are the forces most applicable and most effective in dealing with unconventional warfare. The study confirms that Special Forces are the solution to the growing prominence of unconventional warfare and that countries, and specifically the United States can more effectively counter the threat of unconventional warfare and unconventional forces by shifting Special Forces from a supporting component to conventional forces to a supported component. This would require a massive shift in alignment both for the United States as well as other major states’ militaries but as the study has shown, this is pertinent given that unconventional warfare and forces will most likely remain the primary threat that states and militaries will now face

Abstract:
The following research project was a comparative study of teachers in Support Units and teachers in Special Schools. They were teachers currently involved with the implementation of the 1989 NSW Department of Education Mandatory Curriculum Change for the education of students with severe intellectual disability. The purpose of the research was to present a comparative study on teachers' responses, in both educational settings, examining their understanding of the curriculum change, the concerns of individuals and the levels of curriculum usage in relation to the factors affecting implementation. The application of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model of Change (Hall and Loucks, 1987), enabled the study to focus on the various forms of the innovation, including the innovation configuration, stages of concern, and the levels of use from the two given perspectives, teachers in Support Units and teachers in Special Schools, in relation to the major factors affecting implementation. The study findings highlighted that in both educational settings, change is accomplished by individuals and is a highly personal experience, demanding adequate support by facilitators of the change through appropriate actions, in order to assist effective and successful implementation of the change.

Casazza, Daniele. "Stark-Heegner points and p-adic L-functions." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/403958.

Full text
Abstract:
Let K|Q be a number field and let Z(K,s) be its associated complex L-function. The analytic class number formula relates special values of Z(K,s) with algebraic invariants of the field K itself. It admits a Galois equivariant refinement known as Stark conjectures. We have a very similar picture in the case of elliptic curves. Let E/Q be an elliptic curve and let L(E/Q,s) be its associated complex L-function. The conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer relates the behaviour of L(E/Q,s) at s=1 to the structure of rational solutions of the equation defined by E. The equivariant Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture is obtained including in the picture the action of Galois groups. The elliptic Stark conjecture formulated by H. Darmon, A. Lauder and V. Rotger purposes a p-adic analogue of the equivariant Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, under several assumption. In their paper, the authors formulate the conjecture and prove it in some cases of good reduction of E at p using Garrett-Hida method and performing a factorization of p-adic L-functions. In this dissertation we focus on the elliptic Stark conjecture and we show how it is possible to extend the result of Darmon, Lauder and Rotger. In the case of good reduction of E at p we can slightly extend the result using Hida-Rankin method. This method also gives us a better control of the constants appearing in the result, thus yielding an explicit formula which contains invariants associated with the elliptic curve. To achieve the proof we mimic the main result of Darmon, Lauder and Rotger in our setting and we make use of a p-adic Gross-Zagier formula which relates special values of the Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna p-adic L-function to Heegner points. In a second moment we extend both our result and Darmon-Lauder-Rotger result to the case of multiplicative reduction of E at p. In this setting we cannot use Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna p-adic L-function due to some technical reasons. To avoid the problem we consider Castella's two variables p-adic L-function. We use both Garrett-Hida method and Hida-Rankin method. In the two cases we obtain formulae which are similar to those of the good reduction setting.

Abstract:
Based on nationwide newspapers, the aim of this study is to find predominant discourses about young people who are placed within the State Institutional Board's special youth homes. The newspaper articles used in the study are taken from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet as well as the evening newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. By using a Foucauldian discourse analysis, 38 newspaper articles from the years 2015 to 2019 were analyzed. In the analysis, power, subject positions, the implicit and rules of exclusion have been explored and discovered. Two prominent discourses have been identified. The first one is “Victims of community care” which states that SiS care is insufficient. The second is “SiS youths as dangerous perpetrators”, which states that SiS youths are dangerous perpetrators both in institutional care and in society. To have knowledge about how we talk about a phenomenon, and which discourses that take precedence in society, are important for professionals in social work, since this can raise critical awareness and increase the understandings of the power of language.

Abstract:
Competency-based nurse orientation programs focus on the new nursing graduate and experienced nurse employees' ability to perform skills necessary in a new work setting. The purpose of this project was to develop a learner-focused and competency-based orientation program for new nursing employees at a large urban hospital to enhance patient safety and nurse retention. The Johns Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice model and guideline were used in the selection of articles with higher levels of evidence and research quality for the critical appraisal of literature in support of the program development. The best practices for nursing orientation content and delivery for positive effects on hospital finances, nurse turnover rates, and patient safety were the focus of the literature review. Benner's model of 5 levels of skill development was the theoretical framework for advancing skills of nurses who enter the orientation program with different expertise and skill sets. Nurse orientation materials and processes, comprising a collaborative team approach to orientation and a guideline for preceptor selection, were developed as the essential components for successful orientation at the project hospital. A nursing orientation based on the evidence may provide an infrastructure and operational process for the organization in developing the competencies of all levels of nurses, including experienced nurses transitioning to new units or duties. The social change resulting from the project will be a supportive and seamless transition of nurses into the new practice role and work environment. When implemented, this project is anticipated to increase nurse satisfaction, improve quality of health care delivery, decrease anxiety related to the new nursing role, and improve collegiality among all levels of nurses.

Farhat, Mounir. "Le travail du care : entre engagement et distanciation. La relation entre professionnels et résidents au sein des unités Alzheimer." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PSLED054/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In France, since early 2000s spreads a literature inviting professionals in contact with people suffering from Alzheimer disease to "personalize" the way they take care of them. This term refers to a humanization that seems to fade away in this particular context. What is asked to medical and paramedical staff, is a true and authentic commitment toward these patients. What is aimed, is a control of emotions and the way they are expressed. This Ph.D explores the way in which "personalization" is practically accomplished in the context of Alzheimer’s Special Care Units. Based on interviews and observations, it shows the banality of "commitment", and also the complexity of it’s execution. From the ethics of care perspective, an invisible work makes life possible for every protagonist living in that kind of environment. This cleverness of the situation drives away the danger of reification, and prevents burnout.Far from the chimerical "professional distance", this field work shows an articulation between commitment and detachment (Elias, 1956). Emotions appears to be a necessity in order to carry out the tasks, but also a danger that requires to be put away. Thus, Alzheimer’s units are characterized by the relative importance of autonomous regulation, in comparison with control regulation (Reynaud, 2004) : formalization process struggle due to the elusive and local nature of the ethics of care

Abstract:

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) processors are used in personal computers, smart phones, multimedia devices, etc. Traditional DSP processors with custom logic must meet the demand for increased processing speed. The main aim of the project is to design a 32-bit integer arithmetic processor and to implement it. This design has three major processing features. First, the speed must be optimized by using a hazard free control unit. Second, it must have a two stage pipeline. Third, a single cycle multiply accumulator is utilized. The main advantage of the two stage pipeline is that it can manipulate the instructions, and it can produce correct cycle timing even though there may be hazards. A reduced instruction set is used in this design. A filtering operation is included in order to differentiate the DSP processor from a traditional processor. The processor is designed using Harvard architecture in which both data memory and program memory are accessed simultaneously. This design increases the processing speed by 30%.

Zakeri, Masoud. "Automatic bird species identification employing an unsupervised discovery of vocalisation units." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7833/.

Abstract:
An automatic analysis of bird vocalisations for the identification of bird species, the study of their behaviour and their means of communication is important for a better understanding of the environment in which we are living and in the context of environmental protection. The high variability of vocalisations within different individuals makes species’ identification challenging for bird surveyors. Hence, the availability of a reliable automatic bird identification system through their vocalisations, would be of great interest to professionals and amateurs alike. A part of this thesis provides a biological survey on the scientific theories of the study of bird vocalisation and corresponding singing behaviours. Another section of this thesis aims to discover a set of element patterns produced by each bird species in a large corpus of the natural field recordings. Also this thesis aims to develop an automatic system for the identification of bird species from recordings. Two HMM based recognition systems are presented in this research. Evaluations have been demonstrated where the proposed element based HMM system obtained a recognition accuracy of over 93% by using 3 seconds of detected signal and over 39% recognition error rate reduction, compared to the baseline HMM system of the same complexity.

Abstract:
This thesis is divided in two parts: Part I provides an overview of the basic and clinical QEEG research fields, and is specifically aimed at addressing issues regarding the clinical application of QEEG in childhood disorders. Specific brain oscillations and event related potentials (ERP) have been found to reflect meaningful states, behaviors, and cognitive processes. Clinical studies on neuropsychiatric disorders have demonstrated differences in certain QEEG parameters in clinical populations compared to control groups, however, results have been inconsistent across studies. Studies searching for disorder-specific QEEG profiles in childhood disorders have demonstrated impressive classification accuracies in sorting patients from control groups. But the clinical application of QEEG metrics faces several issues, such as heterogeneity and comorbidity. Part II presents a multiple case study of 14 children referred to a neuropsychiatric unit for observation. QEEG analysis was conducted for each individual and provided a wide range of EEG measures that were compared to a normative database. All deviances were analyzed in relation to reported symptoms and problems, and performance measures. Results revealed significant deviances in two or more QEEG parameters for all of the participants, and furthermore, certain problem areas were found to correlate with spectral deviances in the alpha- and theta-bands. A discussion of the results particularly in relation to issues regarding clinical application of QEEG is provided, and suggests that the heterogeneity in childhood disorders are reflected in heterogeneity in the electrophysiological patterns associated with different symptom complexes, and interpretations of deviances faces similar biases as traditional diagnostics.

Abstract:
The overall aim of the present thesis was to study aspects of patient safety in critically ill patients with special focus on airway management, respiratory complications and nursing procedures. Study I describes a method called pharyngeal oxygen administration during intubation in an experimental acute lung injury model. The study showed that pharyngeal oxygenation prevented or considerably increased the time to life-threatening hypoxemia at shunt fractions by at least up to 25% and that this technique could be implemented in airway algorithms for the intubation of hypoxemic patients. In study II, we investigated short-term disconnection of the expiratory circuit from the ventilator during filter exchange in critically ill patients. We demonstrated that when using pressure modes in the ventilator, there was no indication of any significant deterioration in the patient's lung function. A bench test suggests that this result is explained by auto-triggering with high inspiratory flows during the filter exchange, maintaining the airway pressure. Study III was a clinical observational study of critically ill patients in which adverse events were studied in connection with routine nursing procedures. We found that adverse events were common, not well documented, and potentially harmful, indicating that it is important to weigh the risks and benefits of routine nursing when caring for unstable, critically ill patients. In study IV, we conducted a retrospective database study in patients with pelvis fractures treated in the intensive care unit. We found that the incidence of respiratory failure was high, that the procedure involved in surgical stabilization affected the respiratory status in patients with lung contusion, and that the mortality was low and probably not influenced by the respiratory condition. In conclusion, the results obtained in the present thesis have increase our knowledge in important areas in the most severely ill patients and have underlined the need for improvements in the field of patient safety.

Abstract:
This research develops a methodology for determining farm scale land managementunits (LMUs) using soil sampling data, high resolution digital multi-spectral imagery (DMSI) and a digital elevation model (DEM). The LMUs are zones within a paddock suitable for precision agriculture which are managed according to their productive capabilities. Soil sampling and analysis are crucial in depicting landscape characteristics, but costly. Data based on DMSI and DEM is available cheaply and at high resolution. The design and implementation of a two-stage methodology using a spatiallyweighted multivariate classification, for delineating LMUs is described. Utilising data on physical and chemical soil properties collected at 250 sampling locations within a 1780ha farm in Western Australia, the methodology initially classifies sampling points into LMUs based on a spatially weighted similarity matrix. The second stage delineates higher resolution LMU boundaries using DMSI and topographic variables derived from a DEM on a 10m grid across the study area. The method groups sample points and pixels with respect to their characteristics and their spatial relationships, thus forming contiguous, homogenous LMUs that can be adopted in precision agricultural applications. The methodology combines readily available and relatively cheap high resolution data sets with soil properties sampled at low resolution. This minimises cost while still forming LMUs at high resolution. The allocation of pixels to LMUs based on their DMSI and topographic variables has been verified. Yield differences between the LMUs have also been analysed. The results indicate the potential of the approach for precision agriculture and the importance of continued research in this area.

Full text
Abstract:
Three spined, mussel species occur in the United States along the Atlantic slope; James spinymussel (Pleurobema collina), Tar spinymussel (Elliptio steinstansana), and Altamaha spinymussel (E. spinosa). The James spinymussel was listed as endangered in 1988, and was until recently considered to be endemic to the James River basin (Clarke and Neves 1984; USFWS 1990). Biologists with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) discovered spinymussel populations in the Dan and Mayo rivers in NC in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) tentatively identified this species as Pleurobema collina.

My project proposed by the Virginia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit to the USFWS and the Virginia Transportation Research Council, determined where P. collina resides in VA and what the extent of its range is within the state. An informal preliminary survey design for P. collina was used during the summer of 2002 and simple random sampling was deployed in 2003-2004 surveys to provide a good basis for comparison to gauge the efficiency of the informal sampling design.

In 2002, a total of 116 person-hours were spent surveying 39 localities on the Mayo, Dan, and Smith rivers. A total of 96 P. collina was observed in the South Fork of the Mayo River, Patrick and Henry counties, VA. A documented range of 24 rkm was established in the South Fork Mayo River. During the summers of 2003 and 2004, a total of 228 person-hours were spent surveying 38 equal-area river reaches (10, 000 m2) on the mainstems of the Dan, Smith, South Mayo, and Banister rivers. No specimens of P. collina (live or relic shells) were detected. A simple random sampling approach was designed to be easy, relatively quick and cost effective, applicable to most rivers, and to provide actual numbers for comparison. Negative results were only reported after 6 person-hours of searching within each randomly selected, equal-area river reach had been expended. P. collina was declared absent from the VA random sites surveyed in 2003-2004 with a confidence of ~90%.

A genetic characterization of four extant populations of P. collina was conducted to assess its taxonomic affinity and to resolve conservation issues related to recovery planning and management actions. The populations were examined for phenotypic variation, and were characterized phylogenetically using DNA sequences. A comprehensive analysis was performed for both separate and combined mitochondrial (357 bp of cytochrome-b, 916 bp of ND-1) and nuclear (502 bp of ITS-1) DNA sequences. Based on comprehensive molecular, morphological, and life history data, populations of P. collina sampled from the Dan River sub-drainage do not warrant separate species designation from P. collina sampled from the James River drainage.
