Abstract:
Readers of peer-reviewed research may assume that the reported statistical analyses supporting scientific claims have been closely scrutinized and surpass a high-quality threshold. However, widespread misunderstanding and misuse of statistical concepts and methods suggests that suboptimal or erroneous statistical practice is routinely overlooked during peer review in psychology. Here, we explore whether psychology journals could ameliorate some of the field’s statistical ailments by adopting specialized statistical review: a focused technical assessment, performed by statistical experts, that addresses the analysis and presentation of quantitative information and supplements regular peer review. We discuss evidence from a recent survey of journal editors suggesting that specialized statistical review may be unusual in psychology journals and is regarded by many editors as unnecessary. We contrast these views with those in the biomedical domain, where statistical review has been considered a partial preventive measure against the improper use of statistics since the late 1970s. We suggest that the current “credibility revolution” presents an opportune occasion for psychology journals to consider adopting specialized statistical review.

Abstract:
When selecting world scientific serials for certain disciplines in the natural and technical sciences, the indicators of selected publications citation in specialized journals and the specialized journals citation in the selected publications are used. The study was conducted within the topics “Energy security and energy conservation, energy efficient technologies and engineering». Total citation in individual specialized journals was calculated along with the “discipline impact factor” - an indicator similar to the impact factor having in its numerator the value of citation of journals in the selected specialized journals rather than the whole range of journals being indexed by JournalCitationReports®. The serials were also selected by their total citation of the selected specialized journals. The indicator similar to the “discipline impact factor” is calculated as the fraction of the number of the serials’ links to the specialized journals publications in “the citation window” made by the serials being assessed on the specialized journals publication within the “publication window” and the citing publications in “the citation window”. In all the cases, the citation window equals one year, and the publication window equals “5 + 1” years, i.e. five years prior to the year when the links are being recorded.

Abstract:
The topics of social entrepreneurship have increased considerably time by time. Social entrepreneurship becomes an engaging, specific theme in the field of entrepreneurship research. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how are social entrepreneurship articles classified. Then, to know the trend of social entrepreneurship research, to know which research topics are the subject of more publications, and to analyze future social entrepreneurship topics that provide opportunities for further investigation. There are two journals from leading publishers that specifically offer a publishing platform for social entrepreneurship. There are many articles in these two journals that can specifically give us information about the development of this entrepreneurial topic. We have reviewed this database and attempted to classify materials using VOSviewer software. There are several article groupings into sub-topic sections

Abstract:
Scientists in focused research areas customarily use specialized journals, and yet multidisciplinary journals also are widely cited. Prior studies have investigated the characteristics of multidisciplinary journals, but none have considered the role this type of journal plays in scientific research. Citation data from Nature, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences were used to profile the articles in the journals and the articles that cite them. In particular, when citation occurred across disciplines, the reason for the citation was investigated.

Abstract:
The authors investigate the overall and subarea influence of a comprehensive set of marketing and marketing-related journals at three points in time during a 30-year period using a citation-based measure of structural influence. The results show that a few journals wield a disproportionate amount of influence in the marketing journal network as a whole and that influential journals tend to derive their influence from many different journals. Different journals are most influential in different subareas of marketing; general business and managerially oriented journals have lost influence, whereas more specialized marketing journals have gained in influence over time. The Journal of Marketing emerges as the most influential marketing journal in the final period (1996–97) and as the journal with the broadest span of influence across all subareas. Yet the Journal of Marketing is notably influential among applied marketing journals, which themselves are of lesser influence. The index of structural influence is significantly correlated with other objective and subjective measures of influence but least so with the impact factors reported in the Social Sciences Citation Index. Overall, the findings demonstrate the rapid maturation of the marketing discipline and the changing role of key journals in the process.

Abstract:
AbstractSustainability science is, per se, a topic that is inherently interdisciplinarity and oriented towards the resolution of societal problems. In this paper, we propose a classification of scientific journals that composes the journal category “Green and Sustainable Science and Technology” in the period 2014–2018 through the entropy-based disciplinarity indicator (EBDI). This indicator allows the classification of scientific journals in four types based on the citing and cited dimensions: knowledge importer, knowledge exporter, disciplinary and interdisciplinarity. Moreover, the relationship between this taxonomy and the JCR bibliometric indicators and its predictive capacity of the taxonomy is explored through a CHAID tree. As well, relations between the Web of Science categories, journals and taxonomy are explored by the co-occurrence of categories and correspondence analysis. Results suggest that the great majority of journals in this field are specialized or interdisciplinary. However, over the 5-year period proposed in this study, interdisciplinary journals tend to be far more stable than specialized ones. The decision tree has shown that the number of citations is the variable with the greatest discriminating capacity.

Abstract:
More than 50 % of academic libraries' budgets are spent on peer review journal subscriptions [1]. One may wonder why these publications (often) with plain and dull covers (unlike those attractive, colorful magazines on newsstands), small subscription base and specialized readership carry such importance. The reason is simple. Publishing a journal for interested researchers, academics, and practitioners benefits the advancement of knowledge. To be recognized as an academic subject, a discipline must publish a peer review journal. Unlike magazines with short shelf lives for general reading, peer review journals are archived and referenced within a discipline. These journals serve as a forum for professional intellectual exchange, and as a platform to present cutting edge research. Peer review (refereed) journals give direction to the field and industry. They also help researchers strengthen their academic careers and seek research funding. This article will review basic definitions of peer review and then discuss in detail issues and concerns that emerged in the editing of this issue.

Abstract:
Rarely touched as subject, the history of French cinematographic journals during the aftermath of the Second World War (1945-1952) was divided into two streams: those of specialized journals and those of generalized ones such as Cinémonde, Ciné-Miroir ou Mon Film. They transformed the columns of ancient journals into “film-telling”[Film raconté]. L’Ecran Français, however, was the only journal able to synthesize elements both from generalizing journals (i.e. readers’ letter, advertisement, and cult for stars) and from specializing journals (i.e. political position and comments regarding the cinema). Since then, the two streams of journals were more and more distinguished by their didactic and moral differences. The common point for specialized journals was their expectation for promoting cinematographic education alongside the popular educating movement. Some journals were issued from secular cine-clubs (Ciné-Club and Informations-Ufocel) while others were from catholic ones (Télé-Ciné). There were otherwise journals, which were meant to actively defend American cinema, such as the reputed Revue du cinéma founded by Jean George Auriol, as well as La Gazette du cinéma by Maurice Schérer. These journals also contributed to “experimental aspects” for the newly-born journal Cahiers du cinéma. Positif was a journal similar to that of Raccords in terms of spirit; it seemed to unite and transmit the legacy of two confidential journals: Saint Cinéma des Prés, which defended as well experimental cinema as American cinema, and L’Age du cinéma, which claimed a surrealist approach while denying those films that over-emphasized avant-gardism. In the long run, the great Cinephilia in the fifties and sixties were proved to be closely connected to the unfamiliar Cinephilia right after the Second World War

Loose, Eloisa Beling.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the senses and the discursive strategies of environmental newsmagazines in order to investigate how the notion of environment is built for them. Considering that journalism formats reality - selecting agendas, approaches and ways to make this knowledge an understandable social discourse - it is known that four different environmental publications ('Terra da Gente', 'Mãe Terra', 'Sustenta!' and 'Aquecimento Global') will bring different perspectives of an environmental vision, although they intend to address the same subject. To delineate the similarities and differences between the magazines, we decided to use in a free way the theoretical and methodological framework of French Discourse Analysis. The intention is to look for affiliations of sense, extracted from Discoursives Formations (DFs), defined according to the literature which discusses the environment, and evidences about the possible senses in titles of the mentioned magazines, and also the discursive strategies that move the intentions of the producers thinking about the receivers. Considering the context and the external difficulties in the production, there is a focus in environmental journalism present in the magazine as a vehicle, because of a privileged space for interpretation and the dedication that the theme receives. This research indicates that each magazine built a particular discourse about the environment, but the DF Ecossocial is predominant in the samples. The analysis also demonstrates the regular use of strategies to reach the reader and to stimulate them to change their habits.

Abstract:
This research raises the issue of the journalistic investigation competition applied in Peruvian sports journalism. To this end, an analysis of the aforementioned competence was carried out in the stories published on the web pages of the Depor and Líbero newspapers in August 2020. In this sense, a corpus of forty (40) texts in total was reviewed , from a rubric built especially for this research. This instrument was divided into four dimensions that make up the competence: research method, use of new technological tools, systematic use of research techniques, and the construction and presentation of the story. In this way, it was concluded that the texts of both newspapers do not show the use of journalistic investigation competence, since a methodical and systematic work was not found that aimed to reveal new information on the topics addressed. Likewise, the recurring use of content extracted from other sports and the scarce diversity of sources used, reflect no journalistic work on the part of both newspapers, which frequently appeal to observation and documentation to elaborate their stories. Likewise, the trend reflected that journalistic products were made up of text and photos, leaving aside the use of technological tools such as infographics, videos, graphics, heat maps or other resources that favor analysis and presentation. Therefore, the results indicate that the stories of Depor and Líbero do not reflect the concepts worked on of professional competences or specialized journalism.

Nesse sentido, o objetivo principal do trabalho diz respeito a duas questões encadeadas.
This research investigates magazines as a communication medium and as a journalistic product. Despite being present in a series of studies, magazines are still not thought of as a central object of reflection within the fields of Journalism and of Communication Studies. In this sense, the main objective of this study concerns two interconnected questions. The first deals with a comprehension of the magazine by itself, seeking to understand how the product engenders and incorporates particular communicative and journalistic processes. The second question, empirically focusing on this point, discusses this particular process according to one publication, the magazine Vida Simples published by Editora Abril. Considering the theme of quality of life, which the magazine deals with and the mannerisms present in the encounter between its themes and specific journalistic practices and structures, the study here analyzes the editorial constitution of the publication and the concomitant establishment of a meaning about living well in society. In order to support the analytic course of this study, questions about the magazine and its journalistic style guide the study, seeking to conceptualize the particularity of the magazine beyond the themes it specializes in. Furthermore, the study contextualizes the magazine delimiting the role of how it historically matured into formulating its own characteristics and indicating how the encounter with the theme of quality of life agrees with certain market and social logics of the segmentation and mediatization of the contemporary scenario. In theoretical terms, the study deals with aspects that lead to a reflection in the direction of the tension between social reality and the magazines own style, intertwined by issues related to how journalism belongs to the present, how it deals with certain information demands and how it builds a specific type of knowledge about the world. From the systematic observation of the editorial projects and images of the contents worked on by the magazine and of the editorials published monthly, such as letters to the readers, one can draw reflections that reveal the magazine?s globality, conveying a movement that gives it a singularity we are calling revistação.

Abstract:
Music journalism in Peru is not a branch that has been developed very often. Although there have been different print media that have dared to publish this type of information years ago, nowadays they are almost scarce. Faced with this, different platforms emerge in the virtual world, willing to produce musical journalistic content. As a result, it was decided to address this area of specialized digital journalism, taking as cases the Peruvian platforms Tercer Parlante, Conciertos Perú and Garaje del Rock. This investigation's main theme is to carry out a descriptive analysis of the types of stories. Whether they are informative notes, chronicles, reviews and interviews, of the three platforms already mentioned. Likewise, it seeks to discover if the information provided by these platforms is journalistic. For this, a descriptive and interpretive methodology was used and an observation was made of the publications from the years 2017 to 2020, from the three platforms. Likewise, the files were used as a research instrument. These two files were subdivided into two categories. In the first category, the structure of the page was described, the sections and the frequency with which they publish were identified. While in the second category, the headlines, the agenda, the handling of sources, the types of stories, the handling of specialized language and the use of digital resources were described. Once the investigation was completed, it was concluded that these platforms do provide specialized journalistic material.

The study aims to identify the initiatives of Science Divulgation undertaken by the Federal University of Mato Grosso (Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso - UFMT) and the University of the State of Mato Grosso (Universidade do Estado do Mato Grosso - Unemat), with goals to updating and improvement of institutional communication, increased interaction with interlocutors and strengthening of the state's image as a producer of Science, Technology and Innovation (Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação - CT & I). Bibliographical and documentary researches, priority areas for scientific development and dissemination have been undertaken; interviews; image audit in the state media; diagnosis of the main scientific journalism products developed by UFMT and Unemat, as well as joint initiatives (Fapemat Ciência magazine and Rede de Dilvulgação Científica - Science Communication Network). The investigative method adopted can be characterized as Participant Observation, concieved in close association with problem solving, awareness taking or production of new knowledges (THIOLLENT, 1996, 1997). This strategy combines different techniques of social research, defined according to each stage of the investigation process. From the analysis of the scientific content published in state newspapers, it was possible to verify that these public Higher Education Institutions (HEI) do not occupy relevant place in such vehicles yet, which can be justified by the inadequacy of language or relationship channels, as well as by the necessity of a more efficient policy of divulgation. The mapping of the portals and institutional social media channels showed that the use of these vehicles can be better dynamized. Finally, the conclusions indicate that cultural and institutional differences between the two Higher Education Institutions make not viable the adoption of an integrated Policy of Scientific Communication, that is common between UFMT and Unemat. The development of actions for the dynamization of the divulgation of these institutions can be considered in the ambit of the State System of Science, Technology & Innovation.

Abstract:
/ABSTRACT - Remote-access on-line resources are becoming increasingly predominant in specialized libraries relating to areas of scientific research, the result both of the technological evolution of media and of the changing profile and needs of data users, producers and consumers. This is changing the paradigm of conventional libraries and creating new requirements from technology and metadata systems, and demanding new skills from members of the information professions. This study examines how on-line scientific journals in health and medical libraries have developed in Portugal over the last ten years. The study offers a diachronic analysis and, at the same time, a reflection on the impact of these resources on information services. The methodology used for the development of this study was based on the triangulation of two approaches to research: the quantitative and the qualitative, with data being collected in the field through surveys and interviews. The data collected and analyzed show that since the 1990s, on-line scientific journals have become available in health and medical libraries in Portugal, either through acquisition or through bundling in the purchase of the printed journal. However, the study shows that the number of libraries offering this resource remains small, with cost being indicated by many libraries as the main reason for not offering this new means of presenting and disseminating scientific knowledge. The reasons given for building collections of on-line scientific journals, normally in parallel with collections of the printed versions, include the many possibilities for searching, the speed with which data can be retrieved, and the possibility of simultaneous access. However, managing these on-line resources does imply certain technological problems, demanding a range of hitherto unnecessary new skills from members of the information and documentation professions, indicating a need for training in this field. With health and medical libraries becoming increasingly hybrid in nature, the coexistence of printed and on-line scientific journals raises the question of which of the two media will subsist. The study shows that the existence of one medium does not necessarily signify the disappearance of the other.

Abstract:
This dissertation in the field of English for Specific Purposes focuses on the study of specialized domains analysed through the milieu-culture-discourse continuum. The approach consists in an attempt to apply that theoretical framework to the problematic domain of the quality written press in the United States, of which the New York Times and the Washington Post represent two examples. The study consists more specifically in testing the three functions of a specialized domain, operation, regulation and training, in order to understand to what extent the cultural features of the domain determine the production of a specific discourse. The first part presents an epistemological and methodological reflection on the research object as well as on the theoretical framework. It begins with a presentation of the specific difficulties encountered in analysing journalism from an ESP perspective. It then focuses on the criteria used to determine the specialization of the milieu, based on sociological theories of the media. It finally presents the methodological framework developed for the field study and as regards discourse analysis. The second part focuses on the two companies, considered as the lowest level of specialization, in an attempt to define the similarities between the two newspapers based on a study of the operation function. The third part presents an analysis of the milieu, through an understanding of the regulation and training functions in the domain. The fourth part studies two aspects of journalistic discourse that reflect the constraints of the milieu, namely reported speech and terminology

Abstract:
This qualitative research work presents as a central idea the presence of advertising in the fashion journalistic discourse of the informative pieces of the magazine Cosas Moda. A content analysis has been developed on this specific case related to the problem of the covert advertising mechanism. The context of the presence of brands in specialized fashion magazines has favored the appearance of a phenomenon such as disguised advertising in fashion journalism through resources such as hybridization of discourse and brand placement. This situation is evident in this type of publications, through journalistic genres such as the report, the informative note and the interview, in which topics about fashion are discussed, but which include in their story preferential and evaluative inclinations for some brand or organization.

Abstract:
This research examines how the specialized magazines Sem Terra and Chiapas represent the identities and the cultures of two Latin-American social movements: Brazil´s Landless Workers Movement (Brazil) and Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Mexico). To achieve this goal, ten pieces of news and articles of these magazines have been analysed on a qualitative and comparative perspective, adopting as interpretation tools the contents analyses and the concepts of identity and culture by Néstor García Canclini. As analyses point out, emphasis is laid on popular and traditional cultural manifestations, which would represent the true essence of country or Indian communities. Identity, however, is socially constructed and often reinterpreted by the group or observers. Journalism as it is exercised by these specialized magazines helps in the construction of social representations, imagery and memories, because the cultural messages are related to other aspects of social reality. Through culture humans elaborate representations about the others, the world and themselves.

Abstract Parry, Richards and McAuliffe critique an active learning approach that makes use of mobile technology and augmented reality to enhance students’ real-world learning. Students are now bringing a variety of mobile technology into the classroom and the chapter discusses the challenge of maintaining students’ interest and engagement when they can be connected to the world outside the classroom via electronic devices. Although sometimes a distraction, embracing the use of Web 2.0 technologies can provide the “highly active and participatory experiences” that today’s students are searching for (Brill & Park. Facilitating engaged learning in the interaction age taking a pedagogically disciplined approach to innovation with emergent technologies. Abstract:
The Web of Science Core Collection is a highly selective, abstract-indexed scientometric database, which currently includes more than 21 thousand scientific journals of all specialties published in 110 countries. The database contains three specialized indexes: Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Art and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and a multidisciplinary Emerging Source Citation Index (ESCI). Today there are 15 Ukrainian journals included in the SCIE and 68 in the ESCI. Unfortunately, since 2015, no Ukrainian journals have moved from ESCI to specialized indexes; moreover, several Ukrainian journals were excluded for publishing ethics violations. In 2019, the criteria of journal evaluation were updated/clarified. Today there are 28 criteria; 24 of them (quality criteria) are a prerequisite for inclusion into the ESCI. Journals applying to specialized indexes are evaluated according to four additional criteria of influence. The evaluation is carried out by the Clarivate Editorial Board consisting of company employees, who, in addition to professional skills, do not have any conflicts of interest. To initiate the journal evaluation process, the publisher fills out an online form and continues to publish the journal in a timely manner. Evaluation and subsequent indexing of the journal in the Web of Science Core Collection is a free procedure and the criteria are presented in the article.

The general objective of this research is to carry out a theoretical-methodological assessment of the digital environment as an object of study in the field of communication sciences in Spain, through the analysis of articles included in specialized journals in this area. By means of the bibliometric analysis, we assess the texts published in specialized journals in this field and, among the important variables, the authors take into account the theoretical features of discourse related to this subject matter, the framework for scientific disciplines, and research categories or concepts. The methodological designs will be mentioned as regards those that evidence scientific discourse, areas of analysis, privileged research techniques, and which in specific have been used the most, as well as the predominant forms of triangulation. This new study will complete a decade of analysis of research productivity in communication at Spanish universities, which began with research projects based on communicative intra-history such as MAPCOM by designing a map of the research system on communication practices.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the role played by legal journals as ‘tools’ for international law studies in Italy. The author considers their role in the development of this subject in the domestic arena, where there were no specialized legal journals expressly devoted to these topics until 1898. The early journals represented ephemeral experiments, prior to the foundation of the Rivista di diritto internazionale in 1906 under the leadership of Dionisio Anzilotti. The Rivista represented a turning point in this branch of law and was followed by other periodicals established in the 1930s and 40s, which were partly inspired by the political milieu characterizing Fascist Italy, and by those that developed in the aftermath of World War II, which were influenced in turn by the theoretical and methodological premises of the time and by accentuated contrasts between different academic ‘schools’ of thought. Lastly, the author evaluates how the Italian journals of international law dealt with foreign scholars and foreign languages.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to perform a systematic review of the most recent publications in innovation within the field of family business. A comprehensive systematic search in Clarivate Analytics Web of Science through December 2017 allowed the authors to retrieve 389 peer-reviewed articles. After careful screening, the final sample was reduced to 152 documents from 72 journals. The characteristics of the scientific journals, the diverse topics currently addressed, and the main lines of research were identified. The results revealed the existence of a highly diversified field of research with a wide variety of topics, receiving a growing interest and not limited to specialized journals nor a reduced number of researchers. All of this is indicative of an advance in the field to consolidate innovation as a high potential area of study. This allows researchers to reflect on the current status and research opportunities to contribute to the development of this field.

“If I have seen further it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” The famous statement of Sir Isaac Newton demonstrates that the progress of science relies on the dissemination of discoveries and scientific knowledge. Even though scientific progress is not strictly cumulative (Kuhn, 1970) information sharing is the heart of this progress. Nowadays, scientific knowledge is mainly spread through scholarly journals, that is, highly specialized journals where quality controls and certifications are achieved through peer-review. The first section of this chapter will present the specificity of the current economic model of scientific publications. The second section will introduce to the open access movement and to its emerging economic model. The third section will show the growing implication of governments in that movement.

Abstract:
Numerous examples of innovation through analogy are found throughout current trade journals, magazines and product offerings. Design-by-analogy is a powerful tool in creative design, but generally relies on unproven, ad-hoc approaches. Although a few notable computational knowledge bases have been created to support analogous design, very few methods provide suitable guidance on how to identify analogies and analogous domains. This paper presents a novel approach, referred to as the WordTree Design-by-Analogy Method, for identifying analogies as part of the ideation process. The WordTree Method derives its effectiveness through a design team’s knowledge and readily available information sources but does not require specialized computational knowledge bases. A controlled experiment and an evaluation of the method with redesign projects illustrate the method’s influence in assisting engineers in design-by-analogy. Unexpected and unique solutions are identified using the method. The experimental results also highlight potential improvements for the method and areas for future research in engineering design theory.

Abstract:
The academic career and the stages of promotion of teachers and field researchers at the Egyptian universities as well as at many research centers available in Egypt's 26 provinces is guided by a set of rules and regulations that mainly depend on the number of publications that the researcher is producing in a specific period of time. It is also important to note that such publications should be published in well-known and accredited journals, transactions, and conference proceedings amongst others. These publications could be produced jointly with other institutions both locally and internationally. In all scenarios, one common problem always prevails, that is resources and funding. As for funding it is occasionally provided through international donors such as the European Union and the National Science Foundation. However, the problem remains in the local segment where various barriers are slowing down if not blocking the production of up-to-standard publications and research projects that are needed to contribute to the overall development of various sectors both quantitatively and qualitatively. Example barriers would include financial resources, required specialized equipment, as well as computing (hardware and software) and communication resources. In that respect, Scientific Computer Software Applications (SCSA) is becoming frequently the workhorse of research and development activities. Many software packages have been released to help researchers analyze and produce scientific publications. Most of these packages have a complicated design as well as expensive making it difficult to buy and not easy to understand by the user. Egypt, a developing country, lacks funding for research and development activities as compared to the United States and other European countries. The lack of financial resources and the scarcity of required resources make it difficult for academic researchers to build and excel in their academic careers. This paper demonstrates a new model namely; Virtual Research System (VRS), that is free from limitations of spatial distance and time and based mainly on information and communication technologies including the Internet to help leverage the quality and the quantity of academic researchers in Egyptian universities both locally as well as through collaborative work with other international research institutions. The paper provides an opportunity to share a wealth of information and knowledge that was never tapped before through the old accustomed to traditional techniques. The paper also demonstrates that new information and communication technologies are creating many challenges and opportunities for growth in different disciplines including research and development.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the specialized corpora building, specifically academic language corpus in the biotechnology field. Being a part of larger research devoted to creation and usage of specialized parallel corpus, this piece aims to analyze the initial step of corpus building. Our main research question was what procedures we need to implement to the texts before using them to develop the corpus. Analysis of previous research showed the significant quantity of papers devoted to corpora creation, including academic specialized corpora. Different sides of the process were analyzed in these researches, including the types of texts used, the principles of crawling, the recommended length of texts etc. As to the text processing for the needs of corpora creation, only the linguistic annotation issues were examined earlier. At the same time, the preliminary cleaning of texts before their usage in corpora may have significant influence on the corpus quality and its utility for the linguistic research. In this paper, we considered three small corpora derived from the same set of academic texts in the biotechnology field: “raw” corpus without any preliminary cleaning and two corpora with different level of cleaning. Using different Sketch Engine tools, we analyzed these corpora from the position of their future users, predominantly as sources for academic wordlists and specialized multi-word units. The conducted research showed very little difference between two cleaned corpora, meaning that only basic cleaning procedures such as removal of reference lists are can be useful in corpora design. At the same time, we found a significant difference between raw and cleaned corpora and argue that this difference can affect the quality of wordlists and multi-word terms extraction, therefore these cleaning procedures are meaningful. The main limitation of the study is that all texts were taken from the unique source, so the conclusions could be affected by this specific journal’s peculiarities. Therefore, the future work should be the verification of results on different text collections

Abstract:
Spiral-grooved bearings have lately attracted considerable attentions as better substitutions for current ball bearings, especially in motor spindles of precision equipments such as hard disk drive systems. Their high stiffnesses and high damping abilities can realize good run-out characteristics even for such small-sized equipments. Regarding the groove dimensions of the spiral-grooved journal bearings, it seems that we usually design them according blindly to a traditional standard aiming for maximizing the direct bearing stiffness. It is also the fact that the bearings designed according to this standard can realize comparatively good bearing performances. On the other hand, there have been considerably few discussions on optimum designs of the groove dimensions specialized for a reduction of amplitude of the operating run-out, which is a major characteristic for applications to precision equipments. The optimization of groove dimensions of the spiral-grooved journal bearings is, then, discussed in this paper. The subjects for optimizations are: 1) reduction of rotor displacement against a static load, 2) reduction of amplitude of the operating repeatable run-out (RRO) due to an unbalanced rotor mass, and 3) reduction of amplitude of the operating non-repeatable run-out (NRRO) against an external impulse load.

Abstract:
In some specialized applications, plain circular bearing is mostly replaced by some other bearings, as plain bearing does not suit the stability requirements of high-speed machines and precision machine tools. Grooved circular bearings and multi-lobe bearings with two lobes, three lobes and four lobes are commonly used. The present work gives insight into nonlinear transient analysis of multi lobe journal bearing systems. An attempt has been made to evaluate the critical mass parameter (a measure of stability) for various values of aspect ratios besides finding out the steady state characteristics of multilobe journal bearings (two grooved, two lobe, three lobe and four lobe) such as load bearing capacity, Sommerfeld number and attitude angle At moderate and heavy load conditions (Sommerfeld number from 0.1 to 0.3), four-lobe bearing is most stable. Three-lobe bearing is the best in the range of Sommerfeld number from 0.3 to 0.8. Two-lobe bearing is found to be more stable than other bearings beyond this range.

Abstract:
Compliant gas foil bearings are composed of two layers of thin metallic foil and a thin film of gas to support the journal. The bottom foil creates an elastic structure which supports the top foil. This support structure can take a variety of shapes that range from a series of bumps around the circumference to a series of overlapping leaves. The top foil and the rotation of the rotor create a wedge of air that supports the rotor. The complaint foil structure deforms in response to the pressure developed within the gas film. These bearings have several advantages over conventional fluid film bearings. These advantages include reduced weight due to the elimination of the oil system, stable operation at higher speeds and temperatures, low power loss at high speeds and long life with little maintenance. Some disadvantages of gas foil bearings are low load capacities at low speed and modest stiffness and damping values. Due to these properties, compliant gas foil bearings are commonly used in specialized applications such as compressors for aircraft pressurization, engines for turboshaft propulsion, air cycle machines, turboexpanders, and small micro turbines. The ability to predict the behavior of these bearings and design them to meet the needs of the application is invaluable to the design process. This behavior can include things such as bearing stiffness, damping, and load capacity. Currently most foil bearing analysis tools involve some sort of coupling between hydrodynamics and structural analyses. These analysis tools can often have convergence issues and can require the use of empirically derived characteristics. This paper reviews the current status of the compliant gas foil bearings research, focusing mainly on the journal bump-type gas foil bearings and the development of the analysis tools for these bearings. This paper contributes to the field by making recommendations of the future developments of the analytical tools of journal bump-type gas foil bearings.

Abstract:
[The final form of this paper was published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology.] An algorithm learning tool was developed for an introductory computer science class in a specialized science and technology high school in Japan. The tool presents lessons and simple visualizations that aim to facilitate teaching and learning of fundamental algorithms. Written tests and an evaluation questionnaire were designed and implemented along with the learning tool among the participants. The tool’s effect on the learning performance of the students was examined. The differences of the two types of visualizations offered by the tool, one more input and control options and the other with fewer options were analyzed. Based on the evaluation questionnaire, the scales with which the tool can be assessed according to its usability and pedagogical effectiveness were identified. After using the algorithm learning tool, there was an increase in the posttest scores of the students and those who used the visualization with more input options has higher scores compared to those who used the one with limited input options. The learning objectives used to evaluate the tool correlated with the test performance of the students. Properties comprised of learning objectives, algorithm visualization characteristics and interface assessment are proposed to be incorporated in evaluating an algorithm learning tool for novice learners.

Abstract:
Gas bearings in oil-free microturbomachinery for gas process applications and power generation (< 400 kW) must be reliable and inexpensive, ensuring low drag power and thermal stability. Bump-type foil bearings (B-FBs) and overleaf-type foil bearings are in use in specialized applications, though their development-time (design and prototyping), exotic materials, and excessive manufacturing cost still prevent their widespread usage. Metal mesh foil bearings (MMFBs), on the other hand, are an inexpensive alternative that uses common materials and no restrictions on intellectual property. Laboratory testing shows that prototype MMFBs perform similarly as typical BFBs but offering significantly larger damping to dissipate mechanical energy due to rotor vibrations. This paper details a one-to-one comparison of the static and dynamic forced performance characteristics of a MMFB against a BFB of similar size and showcases the advantages and disadvantages of MMFBs. The bearings for comparison are a Generation I BFB and a MMFB, both with a slenderness ratio L/D = 1.04. Measurements of rotor lift-off speed and drag friction at start-up and airborne conditions were conducted for rotor speeds to 70 krpm and under identical specific loads (W/LD = 0.06 to 0.26 bar). Static load versus bearing elastic deflection tests evidence a typical hardening nonlinearity with mechanical hysteresis; the MMFB showing two to three times more material damping than the BFB. The MMFB exhibits larger drag torques during rotor start-up and shut-down tests though bearing lift-off happens at lower rotor speeds (∼15 krpm). As the rotor becomes airborne, both bearings offer very low drag friction coefficients, ∼0.03 for the MMFB and ∼0.04 for the BFB in the speed range 20–40 krpm. With the bearings floating on a journal spinning at 50 krpm, the MMFB dynamic direct force coefficients show little frequency dependency, while the BFB stiffness and damping increases with frequency (200–400 Hz). The BFB has a much larger stiffness and viscous damping coefficients than the MMFB. However, the MMFB material loss factor is at least twice as large as that in the BFB. The experiments show the MMFB, when compared to the BFB, has a lower drag power and earlier lift-off speed, and with dynamic force coefficients having a lesser dependency on whirl frequency excitation.
