Full textRarely touched as subject, the history of French cinematographic journals during the aftermath of the Second World War (1945-1952) was divided into two streams: those of specialized journals and those of generalized ones such as Cinémonde, Ciné-Miroir ou Mon Film. They transformed the columns of ancient journals into “film-telling”[Film raconté]. L’Ecran Français, however, was the only journal able to synthesize elements both from generalizing journals (i.e. readers’ letter, advertisement, and cult for stars) and from specializing journals (i.e. political position and comments regarding the cinema). Since then, the two streams of journals were more and more distinguished by their didactic and moral differences. The common point for specialized journals was their expectation for promoting cinematographic education alongside the popular educating movement. Some journals were issued from secular cine-clubs (Ciné-Club and Informations-Ufocel) while others were from catholic ones (Télé-Ciné). There were otherwise journals, which were meant to actively defend American cinema, such as the reputed Revue du cinéma founded by Jean George Auriol, as well as La Gazette du cinéma by Maurice Schérer. These journals also contributed to “experimental aspects” for the newly-born journal Cahiers du cinéma. Positif was a journal similar to that of Raccords in terms of spirit; it seemed to unite and transmit the legacy of two confidential journals: Saint Cinéma des Prés, which defended as well experimental cinema as American cinema, and L’Age du cinéma, which claimed a surrealist approach while denying those films that over-emphasized avant-gardism. In the long run, the great Cinephilia in the fifties and sixties were proved to be closely connected to the unfamiliar Cinephilia right after the Second World War
Loose, Eloisa Beling.
Full textThis paper analyzes the senses and the discursive strategies of environmental newsmagazines in order to investigate how the notion of environment is built for them. Considering that journalism formats reality - selecting agendas, approaches and ways to make this knowledge an understandable social discourse - it is known that four different environmental publications ('Terra da Gente', 'Mãe Terra', 'Sustenta!' and 'Aquecimento Global') will bring different perspectives of an environmental vision, although they intend to address the same subject. To delineate the similarities and differences between the magazines, we decided to use in a free way the theoretical and methodological framework of French Discourse Analysis. The intention is to look for affiliations of sense, extracted from Discoursives Formations (DFs), defined according to the literature which discusses the environment, and evidences about the possible senses in titles of the mentioned magazines, and also the discursive strategies that move the intentions of the producers thinking about the receivers. Considering the context and the external difficulties in the production, there is a focus in environmental journalism present in the magazine as a vehicle, because of a privileged space for interpretation and the dedication that the theme receives. This research indicates that each magazine built a particular discourse about the environment, but the DF Ecossocial is predominant in the samples. The analysis also demonstrates the regular use of strategies to reach the reader and to stimulate them to change their habits.
Full textThis research raises the issue of the journalistic investigation competition applied in Peruvian sports journalism. To this end, an analysis of the aforementioned competence was carried out in the stories published on the web pages of the Depor and Líbero newspapers in August 2020. In this sense, a corpus of forty (40) texts in total was reviewed , from a rubric built especially for this research. This instrument was divided into four dimensions that make up the competence: research method, use of new technological tools, systematic use of research techniques, and the construction and presentation of the story. In this way, it was concluded that the texts of both newspapers do not show the use of journalistic investigation competence, since a methodical and systematic work was not found that aimed to reveal new information on the topics addressed. Likewise, the recurring use of content extracted from other sports and the scarce diversity of sources used, reflect no journalistic work on the part of both newspapers, which frequently appeal to observation and documentation to elaborate their stories. Likewise, the trend reflected that journalistic products were made up of text and photos, leaving aside the use of technological tools such as infographics, videos, graphics, heat maps or other resources that favor analysis and presentation. Therefore, the results indicate that the stories of Depor and Líbero do not reflect the concepts worked on of professional competences or specialized journalism.

Nesse sentido, o objetivo principal do trabalho diz respeito a duas questões encadeadas.
This research investigates magazines as a communication medium and as a journalistic product. Despite being present in a series of studies, magazines are still not thought of as a central object of reflection within the fields of Journalism and of Communication Studies. In this sense, the main objective of this study concerns two interconnected questions. The first deals with a comprehension of the magazine by itself, seeking to understand how the product engenders and incorporates particular communicative and journalistic processes. The second question, empirically focusing on this point, discusses this particular process according to one publication, the magazine Vida Simples published by Editora Abril. Considering the theme of quality of life, which the magazine deals with and the mannerisms present in the encounter between its themes and specific journalistic practices and structures, the study here analyzes the editorial constitution of the publication and the concomitant establishment of a meaning about living well in society. In order to support the analytic course of this study, questions about the magazine and its journalistic style guide the study, seeking to conceptualize the particularity of the magazine beyond the themes it specializes in. Furthermore, the study contextualizes the magazine delimiting the role of how it historically matured into formulating its own characteristics and indicating how the encounter with the theme of quality of life agrees with certain market and social logics of the segmentation and mediatization of the contemporary scenario. In theoretical terms, the study deals with aspects that lead to a reflection in the direction of the tension between social reality and the magazines own style, intertwined by issues related to how journalism belongs to the present, how it deals with certain information demands and how it builds a specific type of knowledge about the world. From the systematic observation of the editorial projects and images of the contents worked on by the magazine and of the editorials published monthly, such as letters to the readers, one can draw reflections that reveal the magazine?s globality, conveying a movement that gives it a singularity we are calling revistação.

Full textMusic journalism in Peru is not a branch that has been developed very often. Although there have been different print media that have dared to publish this type of information years ago, nowadays they are almost scarce. Faced with this, different platforms emerge in the virtual world, willing to produce musical journalistic content. As a result, it was decided to address this area of specialized digital journalism, taking as cases the Peruvian platforms Tercer Parlante, Conciertos Perú and Garaje del Rock. This investigation's main theme is to carry out a descriptive analysis of the types of stories. Whether they are informative notes, chronicles, reviews and interviews, of the three platforms already mentioned. Likewise, it seeks to discover if the information provided by these platforms is journalistic. For this, a descriptive and interpretive methodology was used and an observation was made of the publications from the years 2017 to 2020, from the three platforms. Likewise, the files were used as a research instrument. These two files were subdivided into two categories. In the first category, the structure of the page was described, the sections and the frequency with which they publish were identified. While in the second category, the headlines, the agenda, the handling of sources, the types of stories, the handling of specialized language and the use of digital resources were described. Once the investigation was completed, it was concluded that these platforms do provide specialized journalistic material.

The study aims to identify the initiatives of Science Divulgation undertaken by the Federal University of Mato Grosso (Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso - UFMT) and the University of the State of Mato Grosso (Universidade do Estado do Mato Grosso - Unemat), with goals to updating and improvement of institutional communication, increased interaction with interlocutors and strengthening of the state's image as a producer of Science, Technology and Innovation (Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação - CT & I). Bibliographical and documentary researches, priority areas for scientific development and dissemination have been undertaken; interviews; image audit in the state media; diagnosis of the main scientific journalism products developed by UFMT and Unemat, as well as joint initiatives (Fapemat Ciência magazine and Rede de Dilvulgação Científica - Science Communication Network). The investigative method adopted can be characterized as Participant Observation, concieved in close association with problem solving, awareness taking or production of new knowledges (THIOLLENT, 1996, 1997). This strategy combines different techniques of social research, defined according to each stage of the investigation process. From the analysis of the scientific content published in state newspapers, it was possible to verify that these public Higher Education Institutions (HEI) do not occupy relevant place in such vehicles yet, which can be justified by the inadequacy of language or relationship channels, as well as by the necessity of a more efficient policy of divulgation. The mapping of the portals and institutional social media channels showed that the use of these vehicles can be better dynamized. Finally, the conclusions indicate that cultural and institutional differences between the two Higher Education Institutions make not viable the adoption of an integrated Policy of Scientific Communication, that is common between UFMT and Unemat. The development of actions for the dynamization of the divulgation of these institutions can be considered in the ambit of the State System of Science, Technology & Innovation.

Full textThis dissertation in the field of English for Specific Purposes focuses on the study of specialized domains analysed through the milieu-culture-discourse continuum. The approach consists in an attempt to apply that theoretical framework to the problematic domain of the quality written press in the United States, of which the New York Times and the Washington Post represent two examples. The study consists more specifically in testing the three functions of a specialized domain, operation, regulation and training, in order to understand to what extent the cultural features of the domain determine the production of a specific discourse. The first part presents an epistemological and methodological reflection on the research object as well as on the theoretical framework. It begins with a presentation of the specific difficulties encountered in analysing journalism from an ESP perspective. It then focuses on the criteria used to determine the specialization of the milieu, based on sociological theories of the media. It finally presents the methodological framework developed for the field study and as regards discourse analysis. The second part focuses on the two companies, considered as the lowest level of specialization, in an attempt to define the similarities between the two newspapers based on a study of the operation function. The third part presents an analysis of the milieu, through an understanding of the regulation and training functions in the domain. The fourth part studies two aspects of journalistic discourse that reflect the constraints of the milieu, namely reported speech and terminology

Full textThis qualitative research work presents as a central idea the presence of advertising in the fashion journalistic discourse of the informative pieces of the magazine Cosas Moda. A content analysis has been developed on this specific case related to the problem of the covert advertising mechanism. The context of the presence of brands in specialized fashion magazines has favored the appearance of a phenomenon such as disguised advertising in fashion journalism through resources such as hybridization of discourse and brand placement. This situation is evident in this type of publications, through journalistic genres such as the report, the informative note and the interview, in which topics about fashion are discussed, but which include in their story preferential and evaluative inclinations for some brand or organization.

Full textThis research examines how the specialized magazines Sem Terra and Chiapas represent the identities and the cultures of two Latin-American social movements: Brazil´s Landless Workers Movement (Brazil) and Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Mexico). To achieve this goal, ten pieces of news and articles of these magazines have been analysed on a qualitative and comparative perspective, adopting as interpretation tools the contents analyses and the concepts of identity and culture by Néstor García Canclini. As analyses point out, emphasis is laid on popular and traditional cultural manifestations, which would represent the true essence of country or Indian communities. Identity, however, is socially constructed and often reinterpreted by the group or observers. Journalism as it is exercised by these specialized magazines helps in the construction of social representations, imagery and memories, because the cultural messages are related to other aspects of social reality. Through culture humans elaborate representations about the others, the world and themselves.

This research investigates the types of communication contracts established in magazines specialized in health and well-being, considering the enunciator - enunciatee relationship based on the thematic agenda of the narratives of the journalistic discourse. The corpus of works consists of articles from magazines that are references in these themes, whose circulation, according to the IVC (Circulation Verification Institute), ranked at the top during the period of July 2008 to June 2009, namely: Bons Fluídos, Saúde! é Vital, Vida Natural & Equilíbrio, Vida Simples and Viva Saúde. The discourse analysis was based on Fairclough s discourse theory, and the study was guided by the theory of communication contracts of Charaudeau. Sfez, Bauman, Foucault, Boaventura Santos, Sennet, Lipovetsky, Petrini, Pelbart and Prado to examine the contracts of communication and regimes of visibility that govern the agendas writers propose to their readers to encourage them in their search for well-being, health and lifestyle values. The focus on utopian ideals of the perfect body, abiding health and eternal youth builds contracts of communication that bring into the limelight thosewho seek perfect health for themselves, and extends it, in some cases, to family and community

Full textWhat kind of relationship exists between the exposure that a company has in the media and its market value and the traded volume of its stocks? Assuming that the exposure of a company in the press increases the extent of information relating to it and helps to reduce the information asymmetry between the company\'s management and investors, the objective of this study was to empirically test whether there is a positive relationship between Brazilian companies exposure in the press and its market value and the liquidity of its shares on the stock exchange. This is the first study in Brazil on the subject. From a sample of 152 companies representing 81% of the market capitalization of the Brazilian stock market in March 2015, I have collected the frequency of stories in which they were mentioned in the Valor Econômico newspaper in the period of 20 quarters between January 2010 and December 2014. The statistical technique used was the regression with Panel Data, which considers the variation both between the sample of companies as well as value changes over time for each company. As expected from the theoretical platform and evidence from international studies, the results indicated a statistically significant relationship between media coverage and market value. The results were consistent in both the test with the multiple price-to-book (P/B) as with the Tobin\'s Q ratio as the dependent variable. This means that companies in this sample that appear more frequently in the financial press have higher market value relative to those that appear less. A third test was done to measure the relationship between media exposure with the liquidity of the shares, also finding statistically significant positive association. For the first test, it is important to note that, when the sample was divided into quartiles by size, media coverage has lost significance in explaining the market value of the largest companies in the Brazilian market. It is expected that work, albeit with the limitations of a pioneering study in the country, can contribute to public companies, press offices, media outlets and also the market regulators to have a more informed perception of the scope of the exposure in the press. If the line of research to thrive and if a cause and effect relationship is proven, it is thought that, in the future, companies may use media plans in investor relations strategies and measure these effects.

This research analyzes the relationship between the discourse on the body of female teen magazines and the discourse of the redears. In concrete the research was done on the spanish magazines You, Ragazza and Mujer 21. The approach to the object of study is multidisciplinary: on one side, specializing journalism and service journalism and, on the other side, sociology of youth, of the body and of consumption. Beside comparing the relation between the discourse on the body of the magazines and that of the girls, the thesis studies also the symbolic reappropriation of meanings that the readers do of the contents and the sense that they award them in the process of construction of their identity. This research combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies: content analysis (front page, text and illustrations, and direct and indirect advertising) and reception analysis (focus group and interviews).

Science is a recurring theme in the media, but only one portuguese daily printed newspaper has an autonomous section that covers this theme. In addition, science journalists are "on the verge of extinction". The purpose of this study, based on "Público" newspaper, is to analyze and understand the space that this section has within the journal over six months of analysis, comparing it with the interest and perception of the audience. The aim of this report is to better understand the dynamics of a single section, its thematic preferences and other indicators that may lead to a better understanding of this area, which is highlighted by its capacity to inform, but also by the educational nature it presents. Thus, in this report, we attempted to reflect on the personal experience accumulated during three months of internship in "Público" newspaper, combining the collected data and the specialized literature, which concluded that the space of science in journalism is still narrow.

Full textThis internship report serves as a reflection on television journalism, in Portugal, focusing on the day-to-day lives of several journalists in the Society News Department at Portugal’s National Broadcaster - Rádio e Televisão Portuguesa (RTP). During the course of five days of investigation, we intend to acknowledge the struggles, their vicissitudes and routines of an journalist, in this specific department. The world we live in isn’t immutable and certain events, happening each day, make it different. The speed at which information flows has grown exponentially in the past few years. There are more and more topics to be discussed about, more and more subjects that require more thoroughness, in a century where journalism faces a massive identity crisis. Newsrooms have become small for so many events taking place at the same time. Journalists have been “recycled” and thus being placed in all different news departments. The society news department, which is usually the one that abides the largest number of subjects, is also the one that bears more journalists. Facing this, we intend to acknowledge if the journalists in the Society News Department at RTP face this problem and in what way do they change their daily routines as to readjust to their new positions.

Full textThe current internship report proposes a comparative analysis of the environmental journalism developed in the newspaper Público in two specific years: 1997 and 2017. In this perspective a spotlight is shun on the new ways of making environmental journalism, asking how important this journalism is in Público, what are the editorial differences in their environmental content in 1997 and in 2017, what is the importance of specialized journalists in the environmental news in 1997 and in 2017 and their point of view regarding this practice in both years. To answer all these questions, a mixed methodology was key, combining interviews with ex-journalists, journalists and editors and a content analysis of environmental journalism. Findings suggest that environmental journalism in Público is still a priority, even though there was a cutback on this type of specialized journalists. Findings also imply that the online space is now the biggest outlet for environmental news – even though its full functionalities aren’t being totally explored. As this is not an extremely explored topic when it concerns the Portuguese panorama, or even the international one, in reality it is expected that the investigation will build a foundation for future ones in the field of science journalism.

Full textIn 2020, the world was overwhelmed by the arrival of the new coronavirus. Information about the virus has come through various means and sources, making it relatively easy to spread false news, requiring specialized journalism that is capable of reporting correctly. This internship report intends to analyze how the media, more precisely specialized health journalism, with the main focus on the Lusa agency, acted during the first months of the covid-19 pandemic in Portugal. The starting question: “How did health specialized journalism act during the covid-19 pandemic?”, and its research questions “How did Lusa produce news about covid-19?”, “How was the reception by doctors about journalism about covid-19? ” and “What is the importance of specialized health journalism?”. To reach the intended objective, we opted to use a qualitative methodology, more specifically interviews with five journalists from Lusa and five doctors from different specialties, in order to compare positions and identify trends. The results demonstrate that the opinion among doctors varies and not everyone is sure that the communication made was the best, having been described as sensationalist and speculative. On the other hand, journalists emphasised that they were more alert and that they followed the rules for verifying information and crossing sources, always complying with the deontological code. It was found that specialized information is very important at all times, but especially in times of urgency such as those of a pandemic. Since it is still a very recent topic, not only in Portugal but also in the world, this research aims to emphasize the importance of specialized journalism and contribute to a more rigorous and clear communication by the media. Keywords: media, specialized journalism, healthy journalism, disinformation, fake news, covid-19

Full textThis report is the result of a case study of a six month internship in the Strategic Marketing and Communication department of RTP. Based on an empirical study, I aimed to understand the impact of RTP's communication on the journalistic content production. The study case for this report was the 2nd edition of Got Talent Portugal. Firstly, the study was based on the theory of specialized journalism as well as on the influence of the communication of the organizations on the news coverage and on the relationship between sources and journalists. Secondly, the application of this study was based on a research question that emerged from the theoretical component. In order to understand the context of this research, I introduced the institution, RTP, did a brief reflection about the internship, where I described the overall experience and main duties. The last phase of the analysis is the empirical information study obtained through interviews with journalists who covered the programme news. Based on the information collected, I carried out a descriptive analysis of all journalists' responses in order to determine the influence of RTP's communication on the news they produced. During this analysis, theories of Journalism, communication concepts as well as the experience of the internship itself were taken into consideration. Based on this study, we can understand why the communication unit of RTP is crucial for journalists, why journalists write news about the programme; we can also verify if the stories of the protagonists of the program influenced the journalists news production. The results of the research show a strong impact of the RTP communication regarding the news about Got Talent Portugal 2016. It is also proven that the communication strategies have become means of promoting and disseminating the content which brings advantages for both journalists and the company itself.

Whatever the social media that we are talking about, words like "independence", "accuracy" or "exemption" are crucial and no journalist will ever try to walk away from these concepts. In the daily basis work, the journalist does not forget and does not write by or to himself, instead, he does it to a specific media, a company that he is working to, and, for that, he represents. This social media also has his own brand and editorial criteria to guide themselves on a daily basis. This report takes the experience of a professional internship in "Information and Journalism", between December 2018 and February 2019, at the broadcaster "Radio Renascença" in Vila Nova de Gaia. The Radio Renascença is special, it's owned by the Catholic Church and the office of around 200 workers. This broadcaster has a religious base that influences the daily basis of the information, analysing what, as a consequence, could be, or not, published. This document will reflect about the practice of journalism in a specific context of a confessional broadcaster, analysing the power of the church in the criteria of the exposed radio news, considering the produced news and years of experience of the journalists. At the same time, it reflects the role of the specialised religious journalism, according to the current digital bustle times, when the society seems to be moving away, or forgetting, their origin.

Full textThe mediatization process is an essential phenomenon in the coverage of certain events, namely in the context of sports journalism, which has been gaining special prominence as an area of journalistic specialization in Portugal. Being a football modality that has transformed, in recent decades, a powerful industry and a means of social expression, it seeks to understand how it is mediatized the youth football in the daily sports press in 2018, an analysis that is currently presented in relation to the above theme. As such, we want to investigate the way that youth football in Portugal is the target of media coverage by the daily sports newspapers, specifically by the portuguese newspapers A Bola and O Jogo. A determining process for the spectacularization of this phenomenon, as well as for the strengthening and enrichment of the relationship between the media and the form area of young footballers. Regarding the data collection, we will consult all editions of the first week of each month of the year 2018 of the mentioned newspapers to later analyze all the news contents that address the youth football. This criterion relates to the fact that we want to focus the analysis on the present time and in different periods of the year. Interviews will also be conducted with José Couceiro, National Technical Director; Ricardo Vaz Monteiro, “A Minha Causa” author; and Rui Santos, specializing journalist in youth football. Thus, we consider it relevant to deepen the study around the mediatization of football and its potentialities, since it is a subject little investigated by the scientific community, but of gradual academic and media interest.

Based on a traineeship at the Público newspaper during a period marked by a certain instability within the profession, this dissertation/report offers a general reflection on the threats currently faced by journalists in the course of their profession. It starts with an account and analysis – adopting a self-critical stance – of some essential episodes during that experience. On the assumption that essential conditions were in place for the normal functioning of journalism, a number of constraints arising out of recent reconfigurations of society were studied, in order to understand the extent to which they may affect the quality and freedom of journalism and, from a broader perspective, democratic stability. Issues addressed include the perverse effects of concentration of media ownership by major economic groups; the interference by – increasingly professionalised – information sources in the process of constructing news; and the difficulties associated with the migration of journalism to the internet. Finally, in order to understand to what extent these threats are effectively felt by newspaper staff, the case of Público was studied, for a clearer view of the current situation of journalism in Portugal.
