Abstract:
This introductory chapter discusses the conceptual and methodological issues regarding the study of women's music-making, including vocality, subjectivity, individuals, theorization, contextualization, feminist theory and politics, understandings of woman and gender, identity politics, and authoring. The analysis is varied in terms of musical genres, geographical areas, and the role of singing in the life of the singer. The chapter develops its ideas around the proposition that the current understandings of what and how music means could be expanded by more flexible and socially based notions

Abstract:
This chapter examines formal and functional types of indefinite pronoun. It first presents some examples of different indefinite pronoun series in a variety of languages, focusing on a formal element shared by all members of an indefinite pronoun series, such as some and any in English. This element is called indefiniteness marker, an affix or a particle which stands next to the pronoun stem. The chapter proceeds by discussing two main types of derivational bases from which indefinite pronouns are derived in the world's languages: interrogative pronouns and generic ontological category nouns l

This chapter ties together the loose threads of the preceding discussions. It suggests that the role of the in-house lawyer has become further involved with risk management rather than simply the provision of legal advice. It presents some legal and conduct risk management objectives as a starting point for legal departments planning to take a ‘risk-based’ approach to its function. The role of regulators will be also crucial in managing risk, not merely as ‘supervisor’ and ‘enforcer’ in the traditional sense, but also as an effective cross-pollinator of ideas. Moreover, it is important that th

This chapter investigates the interaction between evidential categories and temporal anchoring in Bulgarian, a South Slavic language, Mébengokre, a Jê language in Central Brazil, and Matses, a Panoan language in the Amazon region in Brazil and Peru. It argues that temporal categories retain their usual interpretation in evidential contexts both in Mébengokre, a language whose evidential system seems independent from tense, and in Bulgarian and Matses, two languages where evidential markers are fused with temporal categories. The conclusion is that there is no need to hypothesize an independent

Considering the role of cognitive frameworks in international relations, this chapter uses the so-called ‘Rashomon effect’ as a heuristic device, showing how different views and accounts of effective multilateralism and global governance can coexist as contested discourses and practices, and how they shape expectations, roles, and practices of the actors and policies involved. The chapter presents Latin American perspectives of multilateralism and global governance, analysing its narrative and discursive logics. This kind of discourse is produced according to specific institutionalized norms and has special discourse laws that provide a language marked by technique and jargons, which stylizes it. The establishment of this discourse also makes possible the use of rhetorical and dialectical techniques to build up argumentation between the enunciation, who pass it to their target public wi

Abstract:
This chapter defines attitude datives as evaluative and relational pragmatic markers that allow the speaker to present material from a specific perspective and to invite the hearer to view the material from the same perspective. It identifies three types of context that are pertinent to the analysis of these datives. These are the sociocultural context (e.g., values, beliefs), the situational context (i.e., identities, activity types), and the co-textual context (e.g., contextualization cues). The chapter draws on Cognitive Grammar and Theory of Stance and puts forth a sociocognitive model cal
