Title: Gender equality in non-profit organizations: Gävle International Red Cross Level: Final assignment for Master Degree in Business Administration Authors: Zhe Chen and Bijun Sun Supervisors: Maria Fregidou-Malama and Pär Vilhelmson Date: 2013-May Aim: The study is to investigate the factors that influence gender equality in non-profit organizations. In order to find out the factors, we choose Gävle International Red Cross as the target organization to do the investigation. Method: The study uses qualitative approach to collect the primary data and interview is the source of primary data. We interviewed seven members of Gävle International Red Cross. As for the secondary data, previous theories are the sources, and we also created a theoretical framework based on those theories. Furthermore, we combine the theories and empirical findings to present the discussion chapter. The orders of empirical findings and discussion follow the theoretical framework. Results & Conclusions: After analyzing the data, we find out that organization, culture, management and government’s efforts are four factors having impacts on achieving gender equality in the target organization. Based on the primary and secondary data, there is no ranking for these four factors and all of them are important for the target organization to achieve gender equality. Suggestions for future research: Qualitative approach is the only way to collect primary data, which is helpful for collecting different opinions from the participants. However, it will be more critical and objective for the study to use both qualitative and quantities approach at the same time. Since seven interviewees have participated, the numbers of the participants can be increased, in order to improve the reliability and validity into higher level. Contribution of the thesis: We organize the theories we used and create a theoretical framework which is useful for connecting gender equality into non-profit organizations. This study can motivate managers to consider gender equality during managing their organizations. Key words: Gender equality, management, non-profit organization, culture

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to find out how individual salesperson’s ability to recognize and acquire knowledge is utilized in the organization through absorptive capacity in order to develop sales capability. First of all, the work aims to clarify how individual salespeople recognize external knowledge. Second the work provides insight into how the knowledge is assimilated, transformed and exploited within the subunit and how it is shared between different subunits of the organization in Finland. And third the work aims to identify how different organizational factors influence on the knowledge recognition, acquisition and transformation and exploitation. The used methodology for the thesis is an exploratory case study and the used method is semi-structured interview. The target of the study is a team, which operates in a non-profit organization in Finland. First the case study suggests that leadership may switch the individual motivation from self-centered motivation to develop individual skills into motivation to develop team. The human resource management tools did seem to create motivation and ability towards sales work and they contributes to the capability development as well. However, this finding may suggest that in future research leadership could be studied within the context of capability development through absorptive capacity. Second, the pattern, according to which the sales people were able to recognize development needs of the sales capability, to search and recognize the knowledge within the environment, the ability to bring the knowledge into the team for open discussion and participate on the decision making is central in the absorptive capacity. This pattern contributes to the operational capability development through the principles of absorptive capacity and the case illustrates the role of individual salespeople in it. In further research this kind of pattern could be researched more probably through researches where the researcher would be taking notes in the social integration mechanism in order to gain further knowledge regarding to the different stages of absorptive capacity. Third the knowledge sharing practices within the sales capability development were impeded by the organizations strategy. This suggests that the misalignment between the organizational strategy and sales capability development may cause thus reduce absorptive capacity. The results from the case provide direction for future research in sales capability development through absorptive capacity and they can be used in organizations when developing sales capability. Even though the non-profit business is significantly different from for-profit business, the general way how absorptive capacity functions does not differ that much. When it comes to the generalizability of the results, it has to be remembered that this was a single case study in a non-profit organization taking strongly individual perspective, and thus it does not create a holistic picture of the absorptive capacity or the sales capability development within the organization. However, the results do support the future research by providing insight into how absorptive capacity can be used in development of sales capability.

Abstract:
Non-profit organizations are different from profit organizations in many ways. One important aspect is that their operation is mainly built up by volunteers giving their timeand contributing to the operations within the organization. This is also one of the biggest issues non-profit organizations have to face daily, the fact that the management constantly be on the search for new volunteers. We decided that we wanted to know how some of these non-profit organizations work towards motivating and retaining their volunteers and if and how this work could be improved. We have done our research on the organizations the Red Cross, Save the Children and YMCA. We chose to do aqualitative research in order to get to know the organization and the people behind it enough to be able to answer our research question. We conducted the interviews with at least one person from each of the organizations that were in a managerial position and we also carried out interviews with a number of volunteers from each of the organizations from different operations. To be able to make conclusions from the empirical findings that we got we used a number of theories on the different subjects such as motivation and organizational theories. The empirical findings that we gathered from the interviews provided us with an insight in the organizations that we had hoped for as well as answers to our questions in a sufficient way. We found out what the major issues these organizations were struggling with according to the managers and from the volunteers we got information on how they want to be motivated and how that could help improve the work carried out by the volunteers. We have come up with suggestions on how this work could be improved for the best of both the organizations and the volunteers within them. The conclusions that we make from this is that there are simple but effective ways that these organizations can improve their work towards motivating and retaining their volunteers such as; creating a feeling of belonging with the organization by arranging meetings and gatherings; improving the communication between higher management and the volunteers in order to convey the mission and reason to why this work is carried out; and by giving the volunteers an opportunity to contribute in the way that fit them at different times in their life.

Title: Understanding leadership in successful Non-profit organizations: a case-study of IKSU

Authors: Linnéa Larsson, Peter Storhannus

Date: 2008-01-24

Summary:

Most leadership research has made within regular corporations or public sector organizations in the business world. However, the research on leadership in the non-profit organizations (NPOs) has been scarce even though these organizations play an important part in society and the economy as well. It is argued that leadership in NPOs is different from that of a for-profit organization due to the different preconditions that exist in a non-profit organization.

The research question of this thesis is therefore; “what characterizes leadership in NPOs and what leadership styles can be found?”.

Our purpose with this thesis is to provide an understanding of the leadership in a successful non-profit organization. More specifically, understand the leadership at IKSU. We identify IKSU as a combination between a mutual benefit organization and a voluntary association. We have chosen to make a case study by interviewing managers in different positions at the successful non-profit organization IKSU located in Umeå.

The interviewees also answered a questionnaire about their leadership as a complement to the interviews. Further, a questionnaire was sent out to the interviewed managers’ employees in order to receive better contextual understanding about their self-perceived leadership. Literature about NPOs and leadership in both NPOs and for-profit organization has been used. Two frameworks are central throughout the thesis; the situational leadership model constructed by Hersey & Blanchard (1981) have been used to analyze and understand the leadership styles and the four cornerstones of leadership by Ekstam (2002) have been used to construct the interview guide and to analyze the leaders’ roles in the organization.

The results have shown that he leadership styles that we can find at IKSU are supporting and coaching and that the leaders most developed roles are the roles as developers and teambuilders. We conclude that the use of high supportive behaviour might be due to both the fact that they have such close relationships between leaders and subordinates that the leaders feel uncomfortable adopting a low task/low relationship style, as that could instead damage the close relationship and lead to lower motivation and commitment from the employee. Another reason to use high relationship leadership style is due to that there exist no clear goals within the organization. The leaders work close together with their employees and the employees seem to work independently, thus with the support from the leaders. They let the employees be part of the decision making processes and they take care of the employees skills and knowledge rather than doing everything themselves. Further, they lead the employees through the constantly changing organization and understand that the organization have to develop since the profits have to be reinvested which will lead to further development of the organization.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Impact and Implementation of Learning Intervention on Management and Organizational Practice in a Non-Profit Setting BY Keisha Liggett - Nichols 2013 Committee Chair: Ram Sriram, PhD Major Academic Unit: Business Administration The intent of this research is to explore the concepts of organizational learning as it relates to “double loop” learning. Specifically, this research will test the concepts of double loop theory proposed by Argyris, (1976) in a seminal piece, and the paradigm of Evidence-based management (EBM) in the context of a non-profit organization. The paper will review the transition from a single loop learning organization to a double loop learning organization utilizing EBM as a learning intervention for change. The non-profit organization used in this research is significant as it is a monitoring agency; an intermediary between Public Administration, counties, and private agencies. The paper will demonstrate through a single case study the limitations of single loop learning, and how interventions or processes that lead to organizational learning could facilitate transitioning to a double loop learning organization. The study expects to contribute to the literature by highlighting the value of double loop learning and the use of EBM as a learning intervention mechanism. This study will also underscore how double loop learning and EBM can add value to organizational processes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During the past five years the Red Cross has been involved in two different internal crises. All of them can be related to trustworthiness and brand image. Why would someone keep donating money to an organization that has been involved in fraud and suspicion of corruption? The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how non-governmental (NGO) and non-profit (NPO) organizations rebuild their brand image and trustworthiness after a crisis. We will look at the problem from both the organization’s and the public’s point of view. The dissertation is based on theories about brand image, trustworthiness and crisis management. For the theoretical framework a model was created from these different theories. This study is conducted as a qualitative case study with a realistic philosophy. The findings and analysis shows that the Red Cross has an elaborated crisis management with a good base that can be adapted to suit each situation. However, there are some miscommunications between the organization and the public. Therefore, we suggest three improvements that can be made: communicate directly to the public, investigate immediately when suspicions occur, communicate the internal functions to the public. The first conclusion is that their form of reactive crisis management is that they have a weak pre-emptive crisis management, which consists of diffuse guidelines. After the crisis, these guidelines are adapted to the crisis. The second conclusion is that the organizations brand image and trustworthiness was affected negatively directly after the crisis occurred. However, today both the brand image and the trustworthiness have become stronger than before the crisis. Recommendation for future research is that it can be conducted in another area and include the behavior aspects of the respondents. In addition, the crisis communication team could be investigated.

ABSTRACT This project discusses the development of Keep in Touch. Keep in Touch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which is designed to aid the visitation process. Visitation is concerned with children and their families who have been separated. Reasons for separation vary; however, many children have been separated and would benefit greatly from a local visitation program. Items such as children’s rights, California’s mandatory mediation law, and the current conditions of the family court house in San Bernardino County are all discussed and examined as supporting evidence to the problem of family visitation. The goal of Keep in Touch is to provide a comfortable environment, both physical and virtual, that encourages open communication (dialogue) between children and their families. The cultural climate of Keep in Touch is one that encourages, supports and nurtures the natural connection between children and their families.

Hamilton, Molly Elizabeth. "THE IMPACT OF ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE ON COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE WITHIN A FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATION." OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/361.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study investigated how the organizational culture at a small, non-profit, faith-based organization impacted communities of practice (CoP). The literature reviewed focuses on the following: faith-based, non-profit organizations, communities of practice and organizational culture. The study was situated in a small, non-profit, faith-based organization in Southern Illinois. The methodology of the study was an ethnographic informed design and the follow methods were used: participant observation, interviews, and document analysis. Wenger's (2004) social theory of learning informed this study. The purpose of the study was to describe: (a) how a small, non-profit, faith-based organization's culture fosters or hinders the development and growth of communities of practice (CoPs), (b) how the organizational members identify the existence of CoPs, and (d) what value the organization recognizes as a result of the knowledge shared. This is important not only to add to the literature concerning small, faith-based organizations and CoPs, but to help this organization and similar organizations understand the importance of learning that takes place as a result of organizational member's participation in CoPs. In light of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PWORA) of 1996, or more informally known as Charitable Choice (Thomas, 2009) and now the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships (White House, 2009), the need to help these small, faith-based organizations is relevant. Part of helping the sustain themselves could be by enabling them to recognize the existence of CoPs within their organizations, and in turn helping them understand how to utilize CoPs to their benefit. The results of this study provide discussion around several findings. Findings revealed that there is a CoP in existence. Organizational members do recognize that they share a passion and come together as a group to work toward that passion, yet do not recognize the CoP as it is defined. Further findings provide understanding about how knowledge is shared and what knowledge is shared among organizational members that participate in the CoP. In addition, findings reveal that the organizational culture is aligned with the faith and values of the organization; that the culture does foster growth of CoPs in various ways, but does hinder the growth of CoPs through two barriers. There are several conclusions drawn from this study. First, that the staff is the central hub of communication flow between the internal organizational members Second, that learning is a heart thing, which is a metaphor used to describe the affective learning that takes place within the organization. Third, there is a strong relationship between the culture of the organization and the CoP. Fourth, that sharing, socializing and prayer time are tools used for social interaction among the staff and volunteers. Finally, that the framework of the social theory of learning is embedded with the community of practice identified at The Center. The recommendations include ideas for future research that could expand on the conclusions of this study. Additionally, it is recommended that the results of this study be shared and explained to the organization itself, as well as create ways of sharing the results with similar organizations. Sharing of this study would help such smaller, faith-based, non- profit organizations learn how recognize CoPs, understand how to build a culture within their organization that would foster CoPs, and help them learn how to utilize CoPs in a way that best utilizes their limited resources.

Abstract:
This is a dissertation on organization in Swedish ice hockey based on four articles. The purpose of the thesis is to contribute knowledge on the direction, management and practice of sport using Swedish elite ice hockey as an example. Knowledge is created by examining four separate but mutually contingent aspects of organizations. Article I contributes to the overall purpose with knowledge on the professionalization of Swedish ice hockey, the reasons behind and the consequences of it. Focusing on the timeframe 1967-2000 the article highlights how norms, values and ideals changed over time and contributed to a change from ice hockey as an amateur sport based on idealistic motives and volunteer efforts to a professional sport based on entertainment and commercial forces. Article II contributes knowledge on the structural organization of Swedish elite ice hockey clubs and contributing factors. The article compares eleven elite ice hockey clubs and shows how they vary in relation to each other from low to high specialization, standardization and centralization but also how they present many similar characteristics such as organizational form, subsidiary businesses, cooperation with farm clubs and upper secondary schools, types of employments and division of workload. Article III contributes with knowledge on how organizational structures are experienced by individuals working or volunteering in the clubs. Comparing experiences in two structurally different clubs, the article shows how more developed structures are experienced more positively than less developed structures are. However, both groups agree that more developed structures are desirable and they also have similar opinions on issues concerning formal education and training, the elite program vs. the youth program, strategic vs. operative tasks and personal freedom. Article IV contributes knowledge on how experiences of mentioned structures are affected by remuneration, authority and centrality. Exploring four positions differing from each other with regard to hierarchical position, distance to the club’s core activities and payment, the article shows that individual experiences of organizational structure vary depending on where in the club the individual works. This variation is shown to result in tensions between the different positions. The knowledge offered in the thesis is based on three data collections. Data have been gathered from official and unofficial documentation from and on the Swedish sports confederation, the Swedish ice hockey association and 11 clubs represented in the highest division 2000/2001, and from individuals working or volunteering in these clubs as board members, general managers, marketing assistants, coaches, volunteers in the youth programs and arena personnel. The studies are carried out within an institutional theory framework and the analysis of the results taken together shows how the structures in elite ice hockey clubs are affected by surrounding environment and societal environments. Norms and ideals concerning legitimate ways of organizing are mediated by authorities, educational establishments, trade organizations and successful models in neighbouring industries. These norms and ideals have changed as new actors such as television networks, commercial sponsors and employed staff have entered ice hockey and as the roles of the government, the associations, the coaches and the players have changed. These ongoing changes are combining to a new context and new circumstances for the direction, management and practice of Swedish ice hockey.

Abstract:

The concept of the balanced scorecard was introduced by Harvard professors Robert

S. Kaplan and David P. Norton in 1992 when organizations realized that it was no

longer sustainable to focus only on financial objectives in order to stay competitive.

The balanced scorecard was traditionally developed for use in for-profit organizations

but with its fundamental idea that the financial perspective does not always cover

what is most important, it has also been implemented in non-profit organizations

where profit maximization is not the main objective. Although the balanced scorecard

is presented to be an effective management system for survival in a more

challenging and competing environment it has also been strongly criticized by several

authors as well as organization that have unsuccessfully implemented it. Empirical

studies evaluating this relatively new management control system are still rather

limited, especially in non-profit organization which made us eager to look deeper into

the effects of using the balanced scorecard and we identified a research problem;

Is the balanced scorecard an effective management system that improves the

performance of a local public administration in Northern Sweden?

For this study we identified our alignment toward the positivistic scientific ideal. We

have further chosen a deductive approach as the already existing theory of the

balanced scorecard is the base of our research. We have used a qualitative research

strategy where our empirics are based upon eleven semi-structured interviews with

leaders in Skellefteå municipality where they have given their perception of the

balanced scorecard and its influence on the organization management. Our main

purpose has been to evaluate whether the usage of the balanced scorecard is

improving the performance of Skellefteå municipality. In the process of evaluating our

results it has been made evident that the management system is perceived as

performance increasing even though areas of improvements do exists. One example

of improvement could be to develop an IT-tool to facilitate the reporting of the

balanced scorecard as it is at present experienced as a very time consuming process

since it is manually completed. Skellefteå municipality has put a lot of time and effort

on the implementation of the balanced scorecard as well as on developing suitable

perspectives and objectives for the management system. Furthermore, the

municipality has emphasized the importance of communicating and follows up

processes to improve the quality of the system. This careful implementation and

utilization is something that has lead to a balanced scorecard that increases the

performance of Skellefteå municipality

The diploma thesis focuses on the Usti Region in terms of development projects which have been implemented. The irst part explains the basic definitions related to the development projects, includes the theoretical basis of the developement projects management, which is a defining element of it´s success and describes characteristic of non profit organizations. Usti Region has very specific economy and other characteristics, that´s why the detail analysis is part of the practical chapter and gives us general overview to the situation in the region. The interest in the development is progressive in time, that´s why the analysis of completed projects in Oparno Mill is included in the thesis. It aims to assess whether the projects were implemented correctly and their influences are positive for the territory. We work with hypotheses that were confirmed. We can conclude that human resources have an impact on the region development and also the n-goverment non profit organizations may contribute to the development of the territory with limited resources.

Full text
Abstract:
Title: Management Control for Value Creation – A Study on Non-Profit Organizations. Author: Matilda Olsson Tutor: Elin Funck Examiner: Fredrik Karlsson Background and problem:  Customer focus and how organizations create value for the customer have become important for success and survival, which has contributed to customer orientation being a common practise. Being customer oriented and using management control for value creation seems to be problematic in non-profit organizations because it is difficult to define the customer but also to apply the classical view of value creation. Therefore, the question raises how different types of non-profit organizations define customer, create value for the customer and use management control for value creation?   Purpose: The purpose of the study is to explain how different types of non-profit organizations define customer, create value for the customer and use management control for value creation at a strategic and operational level. The study intends to develop knowledge about management control for value creation in non-profit organizations.   Method: To fulfill the purpose of the study, a multi-case study was used as a research strategy. Three non-profit organizations have been studied by the use of qualitative semi-structured interviews and review of documents in each organization.   Conclusion: The definition of the customer has been found to be due to a number of factors. These factors include the type of product or service supplied, the relationship with the customer, the power relationship, the competitive situation and if it is the same person who pays for the product or service that consumes it. These factors will lead to the organization looking at the customer from a narrower perspective, while the community can be seen as a customer from a broader perspective. What creates value for the customer is individual for each organization, but the most important value-adding attributes are the brand and the customer relationships that provides reliance and trust to the organization. The management control for value creation will encounter obstacles related to the characteristics of the organizations, such as not being able to prioritize among customers, having vague goals, restrictions in strategy formulation and that it is difficult to connect the operational activities to the strategies. Also, performance measurement has limitations because of the task being difficult to measure, having no overall measure performances, and that it is difficult to see the relationship between input and output.

Bengtsson, Linnea. "People Want to Be Led Not Managed : A Qualitative Study about Leaders and Managers WithinSmall Non-Profit Settings in the United States." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Economic Sciences, Communication and IT, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-5782.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to study leadership and management traits and styles within small non-profit office settings (less than 15 employees) in the U.S. from a leader and manager perspective. The thesis is partially about leadership and management as contrary versus intangible in relations to recognized factors of importance for the organization. A common expression describing a manager and a leader found in literature is, "Manager are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing.”

My contention is that leadership and management within small non-profit organizations is complex and contains both uncertain internal and external expectations and obligations. The organization managers I have chosen to study are five community leaders within a U.S. city (population 150,000). These organizations are to be viewed as similar to Kommuner and other social agencies in Sweden. I am analyzing the leadership and management styles and traits in relation to elements within their organization’s work environment. These styles, traits and elements are as follows: leadership and management concepts, motivation, culture, communication and teams.

My empirical material is interviews and observation. I am also using previous studies, literature and models which outlines the thesis theoretical framework to offer an understanding and further explanation of the area of focus.

The conclusion is that what portrays leaders´ and managers´ work environment within small non-profit office settings in the U.S. were mutually identified whether or not the person defined himself or herself as a leader versus manager. The elements identified were work environment, management concepts, communication, teams and networking. In terms of leadership and management, being approachable and visible was identified throughout the interviews as the key factor of importance for the organization. Managers and leaders were found to be both as contrary and intangible throughout the thesis. Management and leadership skills were discussed as both inherent and learned. Key elements of importance for the organization did not vary depending on if the leader of manager defined himself or herself as a leader versus manager. However, styles and traits did vary with the leader or manager depending on when and if they defined their role as a leader or a manager. This thesis has found that differences between leadership and management can offer legitimization to leaders and managers in terms of justifying their positions. Also identified is that leadership styles are partially viewed as personal preferences based on comfort level and experience. In conjunction to this was the contention that people want to be led and not managed.

Abstract:
This report outlines the methodology and findings used to create the book Selling Disbelief: A 20 Step Guide to Grow and Promote Atheist and Secular Groups (Appendix A). The book Selling Disbelief outlines a six-month marketing plan and best practices for groups that are part of the growing Secular Movement. This project is the first systematic academic study of marketing methods in regards to promoting Secular movements. A need for this research has been identified due to a lack of research in this particular field and the continued marginalization facing the non-religious. The objectives of this project were twofold: The first objective was to identify the themes and methods that are most effective in promoting Secular groups and organizations to the general public and to Atheist, Agnostic, and Secular individuals, and to identify those areas where knowledge or methods were lacking or ineffective. The second objective was to conduct an extensive literature review of existing marketing best practices, and using the information from objective one as a guide, to adapt existing marketing information for use by Secular groups. For objective one, the project used ten in-depth interviews with experts in the marketing and organizing of Secular groups. These experts were selected based on years of experience, visibility, and availability. The data was analyzed through Thematic Analysis to find themes on methods, messages, and tactics that have lead to successful marketing and promotion. For objective two, this project used a review of existing marketing and promotion literature of best practices for community groups of a similar nature to Secular groups. By triangulating the existing marketing literature with themes from the interviews, best practices pertinent to Secular groups were identified. The interview and research findings of this project were compiled into a handbook titled “Selling Disbelief: A Guide to Organizing and Promoting Secular Organizations” with recommendations and best practices for Secular and Atheist groups to market and promote their organizations.

Abstract:
The issue of migration within the European Union has grown in member countries to considerable size. Management representatives of EU institutions have decided to address this situation. They established community program Solidarity and management of migration flows. The European Commission has decided that for the financial management of this program will be used the principle of shared management. The principle of shared financial management is the delegation of powers and responsibilities for funding and implementing the program from the institutions of the European Commission to the Member State. This decision creates an obligation for a Member State to establish a system of financial management programs in accordance with financial rules of the European Union (not by the financial rules of the Member State). So the general program "Solidarity and management of migration flows" became the first community program in the CR, which is being implemented on the principle of shared financial management. Member states are obliged to create their own theoretical and methodological basis of a new financial management. This method of financial management has three pillars - Responsible Authority, Audit Authority and Certification Authority. The recipient of funds may be non-profit organizations or state or public nonprofit organization. The financial management of the Responsible Authority is responsible for program implementation in the Member State through projects of final beneficiaries. The Audit Authority is the control body. The Certification Authority is the authority for confirmation. It is the last link between the European Commission and Member States. The task of the Certification Authority and at the same time of this dissertation was to develop new theoretical and methodological system of internationally recognized certification of public expenditures for services that are financed from the EU budget. In the past, the issue of certification of the expenditures financed by community programs in the CR was not addressed. The goal set in my work was met. New theoretical and methodological certification system was created. Functionality and effectiveness of the system was checked before being put into practice through expert assessment by experts of the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Finance. Also theoretical and methodological approach was developed, which was approved by the Minister of the Interior, and which became a mandatory certification standard for all involved organizations in the CR. The system was put into practice and has been used since 2009.

Abstract:
Background: The majority of swedish golf clubs are run as non-profit organizations where the purpose is to work for the members' common interest. Despite the non-profit purpose, the economy can be seen as an important element for non-profit organizations where regular follow up is preferable to avoid a bad economic situation. Since the purpose of management control is to achieve financial goals, adaptation may be required to apply the control tools to non-profit organizations. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how management control tools are adapted to non-profit organizations that have the members' interest in focus. Method: The approach is based on a qualitative method and the study was conducted at non-profit golf clubs. The empirical material has been collected from four semi- structured interviews with the club manager from each golf club. The material has then been analyzed on the basis of a comparative method for detecting differences and similarities between the respondents. Conclusion: This study shows that management control tools in some parts have to be adapted to non-profit organizations and is adapted after the members' interest. Adaptation is made to the budget process, the possibility to increase variable income, that the investment analysis is made without the possibility of revenue calculation and to the different financing possibilities for non-profit organizations.

The idea of the thesis is to determine the effectiveness of state technical schools using a relatively new research method called Data Envelopment Analysis Method or DEA. In relation to that are explained the basic terms connected with: organization, organization structure, management of knowledge, measuring of efficacy and effectiveness of organization systems, then the term of non – profit organizations, where schools and the way they function are stressed. Changes in any sphere of human activity carry with them certain risks but also improvement and promotion. Changes in the educational systems are specifically delicate because possible mistakes in education are reflected with certain delay which can be extremely undesirable since a certain amount of time is necessary for the trained stuff to occupy their place in the economy and society of a country. It is universally acknowledged that the wealth of a nation is, among other thing, valued trough its educational resources. The purpose of this thesis is to, using the DEA method, find solutions which will improve the work and effectiveness of secondary schools, technical as well as others, and grammar schools. DEA method helps inefficient units (schools) identify exemplary unit (school) which will provide them with the necessary inputs/outputs to make them efficient. DEA method finds ways to make ineffective school effective and effective schools even more effective. Acknowledging the information on operationresearch, especially in the field of the activities of non – profit organizations such asschools, it can be concluded that the research conducted from 1994 till 1998 and from 2004 till 2008 show a considerable progress in the student achievement in learning.

In the late 1990s, in the context of reform of the Brazilian state was created the model of Social Organization with the aim of expanding the managerial capacity of institutions operating public resources, but whose activities are not exclusive state. In mid 1997, the Brazilian Association of Synchrotron Light Technology - ABTLuS was qualified as an OS to operate the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory - LNLS, organization object of this Case Study. The adoption of the OS model and the requirements for establishing the parameters for results through the Management Contract signed between the ABTLuS and the Ministry of Science and Technology - MCT, has led to new artifacts management were deployed in the LNLS. Among the major contributions of the OS model is the identification of measures to monitor performance in organizations of Science, Technology and Innovation - C, T & I. The survey was conducted using the qualitative method, exploratory and applied using a procedure to collect data, apply in-depth interviews with a member of the Board, four directors or former directors of LNLS, two group leaders and three agents of the external evaluation organization. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis with triangulation. The research identified key performance measures for monitoring the LNLS which were grouped into two perspectives: i) the strategic and ii) of inducing results. The accompanying measures of the strategy are: i) Legitimacy, ii) Research Results; iii) Reliability of Facilities and iv) Open of Facilities. Accompanying measures known inducers of results was composed by the aggregation of the following categories: i) Human Resources, ii) Financial Resources and iii) Managerial Efficiency. Finally, the thesis presents a conceptual model for monitoring the performance measures for organizations, C, T & I and the practical point of view, suggesting a new framework of performance indicators for the LNLS.

As Taiwan’s GDP has been highly increased in the past few years, along with the growing maturity and diversity of the society, more and more people from broad levels of Taiwan are willing to support the public welfare groups. This contributes to the growing of many famous non-profit organizations (NPOs), such as “Tzu Chi Foundation” and “Taiwan Fund for Children and Families”. Besides these well-known NPOs, there are a large number of people who dedicate themselves into public welfare business with or without a proper organization. Due to the lack of enough man-powers, facilities and information, these self-initiated public welfare groups are either not able to raise enough funds to support their operations, or, on the contrary, with enough funds, but are not able to use their funds efficiently, which cause the waste of social resources. This thesis is base on the concept of venture philanthropy to apply Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints on a NPO. This study implemented TOC’s thinking process into a real case, to analyze their operational obstacles and to deduce feasible solutions. Furthermore, through the practice results of the deduced solutions, we can verify that the TOC can be helpful to NPOs, and can be an effective management tool for venture philanthropists. I hope this study can provide practical verification to support NPOs and venture philanthropists to solve their two major difficulties in raising funds and increasing return on resources invested.

Successful businesses often use customer relationship management (CRM) strategy, but rarely in non-profit organization (NPO). Facing competition, how to retain stakeholders along with mission and sustainability for nonprofit organization is a critical issue. The study tries to explore the successful NPO using CRM strategy following the activities of record and storage, interaction, segmentation, customization and IT uses. Using narrative inquiry methods to study Tzu Chi NPO, the study finds that: 1. NPO tends to record data by multi-way and use distributed data based methods (DDBMs). 2. NPO inclines to interaction with customers using value instead of activities. 3. Segmentation and customization in NPO tends to formalism. 4. NPO uses more multi-media and flexible IT tools. The finds could provide useful references by other NPOs in Taiwan and rich the CRM academia empirical study.

In Taiwan, the government usually plays a leading role in the preservation of historical cultural site. In addition, the designation and identification of historical site call for the input of a large abundant of social resources. However, the resources input by the relevant government departments are not enough to support the preservation and maintenance of so many historical cultural sites. The concept of customer relationship management is important to non-profit organizations. Based on the multi-purpose and multi-publics characters, the customer relationships are more complex in non-profit organization. The CRM could help non-profit organization to clear the relationship between every kind of customer and organization. Furthermore, the CRM could help non-profit organizations to build and maintain the long-term and stable relationship with every kind of customer. This study discuss the CRM issues through case study method, and the unit of analysis is every kind of customer of Chinese Management Association in this case study. This study found the concept of trust is more important to the non-profit than profit organizations, because the customer relationship is not pure monetary trading, and trust means the customers’ cognizance of service quality, reliability, and honesty. Therefore, this study argues that the trust is most important impact factor in non-profit organization applying CRM. The customers’ trust is militated by the renown and capacity of non-profit organizations. The organizational renown means that the sensation of all stakeholders about honest, conscientious, graceful, profession in their specific field. The organizational capacity means the capability about providing high quality service. The higher customers’ cognizance of providing high quality service, the higher trust with the organization.

ABSTRACT This study is focused on the analysis to establish civicness-laden public management in association with non-profit organizations. Through the efforts to build the model structure, we can study the main dimension which is required to pay more attention in order to strengthen the process of civicness-laden public management, and investigate into the problem to improve the public administration capability of the government under cooperation between the public sectors (government) and the private sectors (non-profit organizations). Speaking in details, the targets of this study include: (1) To investigate the theoretic meaning of the establishment of civicness-laden public management from documentary references. (2) To study the problems in connection with the establishment of civicness-laden public management. (3) To state the parameters of cause and result under the role and function played by non-profit organizations in civicness-laden public management. (4) To establish a theoretic structure for the study of civicness-laden public management in association with non-profit organizations. (5) To describe in details the main dimension and guideline for each parameter and also to provide the methods and strategy for fulfillment. We expect that this study of public management will enable people to recognize, internalize and vitalize again the issues such as the quality of citizens and cooperation between the public sectors and private sectors, and will also open an new realm and area for public management. In this study, we also hope that the government can adjust the traditional role as a provider to a role to implement criteria or reinforcement gradually, especially to exert the function of “good governance” so that the private sectors may have more opportunity to offer and participate in social services in a wider range. As to the non-profit organizations, they can make full play of their role function, for example, they will be more active and positive to play the role function of expansion and innovation, the role function of improvement and promotion, and the role function of extensive social participation. In the meantime, it is also required to promote character and re-socialized education for people as well as to maintain the ideas of democratic society and various positive value judgments through the cooperation and interaction between the government and non-profit organizations. In this way, both can supplement each other to build a cooperative network and create a value-added and everlasting administration model so that the government and private sectors may produce “integrated advantages” to achieve the success of civicness-laden public management. Key words: civicness-laden public management, non-profit organizations.

Meyer, Irma. "A metamodern stakeholder relationship management model for non-profit organisations." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/23791.

Full text
Abstract:
Theorists and management in the South African non-profit sector agree that strong stakeholder relationships are essential in negotiating the challenges faced by the South African non-profit sector. Despite the acknowledgement from the non-profit sector that strong relationships are key to achieving organisational goals, there is an apparent lack of knowledge and strategic thinking amongst them pertaining to the concept of stakeholder relationship management. Against this background the purpose of this study was therefore to develop a metamodern model for stakeholder relationship management, aimed specifically at the South African non-profit sector, that could be implemented by NPO management in a practical manner. The blurring lines between the opposing views of modernism versus postmodernism motivated the choice of metamodernism as a relevant worldview for this study. Metamodernism does not imply a balance between these poles, but rather a constant swinging of the pendulum during which metamodernism negotiates between modernism and postmodernism. It is the construction of a workable, interrelated worldview, recognising the intimate relationship between modernism and postmodernism. It was therefore concluded that a metamodern worldview in which both modernism and postmodernism feature, would not only make it possible for nonprofit organisation managers to understand and join the discussion on stakeholder relationship management, but also to implement the proposed metamodern stakeholder relationship management model. The resultant metamodern stakeholder relationship management model for non-profit organisations is framed by so-called modernistic communication and stakeholder relationship management theories, but it was done in line with the metamodern worldview of the study, allowing for initiative and innovation. The flexible, organic and cyclic nature of the proposed model echoes this worldview. A qualitative, exploratory and interpretative research design was implemented to test a conceptual framework and face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior management in the non-profit sector. The design of the framework and subsequent model was guided by a number of assumptions and propositions arising from a thorough literature review, all of which were supported and confirmed by the research results. The most significant contribution of the study is the application of a metamodern worldview emanating from a reluctance to choose between a modern or postmodern stance when discussing communication science and stakeholder relationship management practices. It is therefore foreseen that it would offer the field of communication science new and creative means of combining modernism and postmodernism approaches when studying communication phenomena. It will also expand the responsibility for communication and stakeholder relationship management beyond that of the communication specialists to senior management in the non-profit sector.
