Impact loads generated from the dynamic effect of passing trains can exacerbate the degradation level of ballast aggregate of railway track. To diminish the induced impact loads, the use of crumb rubber (CR) in the ballast course is characterized as a well-established procedure related to the modification of utilized material. Nonetheless, more in-depth assessments of size and percentage of CR particles combined with ballast aggregate are still required. A long-term issue that has hampered the efficient operation of heavy-haul tracks is the migration of fluidized fines from the shallow soft subgrade to the overlying ballast, i.e., mud pumping. This paper presents a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests where realistic cyclic loading conditions were simulated at low confining pressure that is typical of shallow subgrade beneath a ballast track. Subgrade soil specimens with a low-plasticity index collected from a field site with recent history of mud pumping were tested at frequencies from 1.0 to 5.0 Hz and a cyclic stress ratio (CSR) from 0

Abstract:
This paper summarizes the appropriate equipment and test procedure for ballast shear strength testing using the direct shear method (ASTM D3080 and D5321) and presents some typical results. To accomplish this ballast testing, a full-scale direct shear box was developed that can accommodate an approximately 1 m (3 feet) wide and 0.6 m (2 feet) deep specimen, which is much larger than current shear boxes used for ballast testing. This larger specimen size resulted in significant differences in measured shear behavior and shear strength parameters. The shear strength properties of the ballast und

Abstract:
Geogrid reinforcement of railroad ballast improves its structural response under loading, limits lateral movement of ballast particles, and reduces vertical settlement through effective geogrid-ballast interlocking. This improved performance can be linked to improved shear strength and resilient modulus properties. An ongoing research study at Boise State University is focusing on investigating the effects of different specimen and test parameters on the mechanism of geogrid-ballast interaction. A commercially available Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) program (PFC3D®) is being used for this pu

This paper presents the current state of results from our program of balloon-borne far-infrared spectroscopy of the stratosphere. The instrumentation used in these observations consists of a two-beam Fourier transform spectrometer, which receives thermal emission radiation from the atmosphere by means of a telescope that is accelerometer- and gyroscope-stabilized to 0.02° in absolute elevation. The spectrometer is operated over the range 80-220 cm-1, with an unapodized resolution of 0.032 cm-1. The field of view on the sky is 0.3°, corresponding to a sampling width of less than 1/3 atmospheric

Abstract:
The 2018 Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA)1 requires an annual report on the effectiveness of national ballast water management (BWM) requirements. This report provides analyses of (1) the patterns of ballast water (BW) delivery and management; (2) Coast Guard’s compliance and enforcement actions regarding BWM regulations; and (3) patterns of biological invasions by marine and estuarine aquatic nuisance species (ANS). It covers the two-year period from January 2021 through December 2022 to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Coast Guard’s statutorily mandated BWM regulatory program and v
