Full textThis doctoral dissertation explores the role that historical theatre played in the process of nation-building in Peru between the mid-nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. Local theatre’s dynamics mirrored the development of nation-building in this country. The period under study is of particular complexity in Peruvian history, and it allows us to understand the difficulties arising between the construction of the nation and the development of a Peruvian national identity. This research focuses on Lima, Peru’s capital city. It demonstrates that the historical dramas written in this period, even when not all of them were set on stage, sometimes conveyed a realistic image of the past whereas other times that representation was fictitious. These plays expressed the middle and/or upper classes’ national aspirations and ideals. Most play writers and the audiences that attended the plays belonged to the middle and/or upper classes and considered themselves as liberals. This dissertation also argues that Peruvian historical theatre only evolved in circumstances in which the local elites were filled by nationalist enthusiasm and optimism about Peru’s contemporary present and future

Full textThe present thesis examines the socio-historical process of the construction of a relatively recent social field, from its gradual birth to the rationalization as the field of Street Arts. The empirical observations on historic companies, young companies, markets, institutions, and political devices and the theories of the field by Pierre Bourdieu, the social history by Norbert Elias, the collective dimension of art by Norbert Bandier and Rémy Ponton, and the generations of Mannheim are combined to pursue the central aims of this study: the analysis of explicit logic and objective determinations of the process of the construction of this social field and the analysis of implicit logic of the process through the confrontation between the old historic agents and newcomers This thesis consists of four parts. The analysis of the generational contents allowing individuals with different courses to come to unite into a real group and create a particular affinity, the construction of the network of Street Arts, the development of the field of Street Arts through a struggle of positioning, finally the investigation of the relationship between a new generation of artists who did not participate in this construction and the historic generations

Full textThis dissertation describes the different paths through which this social group has tried to emancipate itself from a job market that has tended to condemn entertainment workers to either irregular and limited revenues, or to forms of subordination hardly compatible with a kind of work often lived as a calling. The first trend that can be observed, from 1919 to 1937, is centered around professional bodies. In a context where the regulation of work by the state remained low, trade unions tried to impose themselves as the main sources of norms – by setting prices – and of coercion – by publicly exposing the employers who didn’t respect the rules they had set. In the second trend we highlight (1937-1979), it is employment that is considered as the main means for emancipation. With the idea that contract work should go along with the general model of a stable wage system, workers in the entertainment industry sought full-employment for each and everyone of them, and thus promoted a state-driven development of activity. The third trend, observed from 1980 to 2007, originates in the massive socialization of their wages for contract workers, through the specific Unedic benefit system. This system partly rebalances wage asymmetries, and thus constitutes the economic basis for a shift in the balance of power across professions in the entertainment industry. Even though it was not designed for this, the wage socialization system of French entertainment workers appears to have allowed improvements in both the stability and the wages of those who benefit from it

Full textDuring the nineteenth century two imperial decrees played a decisive role in the history of parisian theatres : that of 1807 reduced their number to eight, and that of 1864 proclaimed freedom of exploitation. For this period (18071864), the theatres were subject to an extremely complicated and severe legal control which weighed down heavily on the management of these enterprises. Even more to the point this legislation had a powerful effect on the personnel of the lyric organizations and on the repertory which it directed by the bias of the censure and by imposing on each theatre a specific genre. In the first part, the structures established by the government are analysed, and the second treats the means used by the theatres and by those people belonging to the artistic and literary milieu to resist the legal authority's strict control and to denounce the unfortunate conditions against which young composers had to struggle. What was the theatres' stake and what had they achieved by 1864 when the second decree opened up new perspectives for them : liberty
