Full textEnthusiasm for cultural heritage through virtual 3D modelling brings historical reconstitution back to the forefront of museum studies. Yet, museums have been using this technique as an exhibition strategy for a long time. We are currently experiencing a real transformation, driven by technology, of the manner in which exhibition project managers work. Having been used extensively by museums, historical reconstitutions are good indicators for measuring the impact of technological advances in exhibitions. To this end, using a typological grid, a review of sixteen historical reconstitutions was conducted. The review revealed that when non-linearity was incorporated into exhibition delivery, a shift occurred; the museum visit focused on the journey as experience rather than as an account of a heritage story. Three study cases support this finding: the permanent exhibition at Maison Chapais in Saint-Denis-De La Bouteillerie (Québec), the self-guided tour using a digital tablet of the same Maison Chapais and the interactive virtual 3D model of the Québec Ursuline Convent (Canada). The first case reveals that the journey, a combination of the visitor’s movements and the treatment of the space, creates the account. In the second case, mixed reconstitution, technology is added to the equation as a well-articulated supplement and thirdly, a full virtual reconstitution, technology has so overtaken the display that it governs all components. Indeed, not only are all the elements of the display transformed - with some aspects increasing in importance - but that these changes also occur in the conception and management of projects. These upheavals nurture a new exhibition approach that can be described as “spatial museology”. Nevertheless, professionals have not yet mastered this emerging practice; however, it signals a critical way in which museums must adapt in today’s society.

Full textThe preservation and restoration project carried out in place royale, quebec city (canada), has resulted in the demolition of almost every building marked by the victorian era, and in the reconstruction of a development inspired by what may have prevailed in the french colony during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The project, which has been guided by nationalist and touristic motivations, started in 1970 and is still going on in 1995. This built heritage preservation policy is not exceptional in quebec. It was standard pratice between 1950 and 1978, and even left traces beyond 1980 in limited projects. This attitude towards heritage is opposite to the one adopted in europe and is closer to what can be seen elsewhere in canada and in the united states. Cultural and ideological principles of the conception of built heritage in quebec are to be found in the history of the double colonisation of this canadian province and in the relationship the quebec society maintains with history and art

Full textThis dissertation documents the environmental history of Québec City, preceding and after the first European establishments in New France. Archaeological excavations at the Intendant Palace’s site, in Lower Town, has revealed an undisturbed sedimentary sequence and a section of a wooden palisade. This research is based on environmental and historical analyses and includes three sections. The first chapter describes a paleoecological reconstruction at two sites (Intendant’s Palace: PDI and Chateauguay: CHAT) located on the lower course of the Saint-Charles River, and dating as far back as the mid-Holocene up to the beginning of the European settlement of Quebec City. Geomorphological and macrofossil data along with a chronological framework established by using radiocarbon dating, suggest that the former river floodplain was influenced by two marine transgressions (Laurentian and Mitis). Macrofossil assemblages at the two sites indicate that the late-Holocene vegetation consisted of a mosaic of plant communities largely influenced by the local topography and proximity to the river bank. In the second chapter, we document the ecological and historical contexts of palisade construction at PDI. White cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.) posts were used to erect this defensive structure, a species which was probably common in the site’s vicinity. Based on tree-ring data from archeological wood, we conclud that the palisade was quickly assembled in 1690 and 1691, for protection against enemy attacks. A long regional tree-ring chronology for white cedar, called the Saint-Laurent chronology (1489-2001), was constructed from the posts analysed. In the third chapter, we synthesize historical data in order to identify the environmental perceptions of the first european occupants of the Quebec City region and, to a broader scale, of New France. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Europeans experienced their new environment often through contacts with indigenous populations. Human settlement was possible through human adaptation to this new territory with the aim of exploiting its resources. Discovery of New France reflects the learned society’s passion for sciences and a sensitivity to nature.

Full textThe thesis explores a new research framework for landscape characterization in Quebec. The rural landscape is linked to the natural resources and anthropic structures that obtain and participate both in the formation of the establishment, in its material dimensions, and in the historical-cultural successions that have shaped it. Thus, the thesis explores two research approaches that stem from Italian research, suggesting that their combination fertilizes their relevance: the morphotypological approach - which describes, interprets and represents the forms of the territory in its successive iterations - and the historical-cultural approach - which decodes its genetic rules by considering aspects experienced by the populations. The observation of characters through these two lenses makes it possible to extract and analyze the process of formation and transformation of the territory, and ultimately to identify the permanence structures and inherited syntactic rules that are expressed in the landscape. To this effect, the notions of territorial structures, morphotypes and landscape figures allow a potentially new perspective and paves the way for the discipline of morphotypology in land-use planning research - particularly in the descriptive-historical and project fields. The knowledge of these landscape characters, along with that of the growth and decline rules and pressures of human establishments, make it possible to reveal, throughout the historic transformations of the territory, interpretations that can be projected. This knowledge allows for the elaboration of coherent projects, in continuity with history, local identity and the territory.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the cultural practices of the Québécois, more specifically, to begin with, on its influencing factors. It then looks at comparisons between individuals based on generations and life history. To conclude, it examines territorial and regional division in terms of cultural practices and issues related to territory. All the findings come from surveys on cultural practices in Quebec conducted every five years since 1979 by departments of cultural affairs. The two main theoretical references are Bourdieu's theory of legitimacy and Peterson's omnivore thesis. In the opening section, the thesis explores whether Internet use is connected to cultural openness or isolation. The findings demonstrate that age, education and the use of the Internet for cultural purposes are strong predictors of visits to cultural venues and outings to shows. The models that include Internet use and sociodemographic variables are more efficient than those focusing solely on the latter. In the second part, the study's quasi-cohorts were compared to see if their cultural behaviours changed according to life history and whether their cultural path varied over time. In conclusion, the diversification of the quasi-cohorts' practices was examined to estimate whether or not they became more omnivorous with time and from one quasi-cohort to another. The explanatory model displays the differences in cultural paths based on life history, and over time. It also brings to light the differences from one generation to another, as well as the differences between generations sharing the same life history. These results, unlike Peterson's (2004), do not conclusively show that older quasi-cohorts are more omnivorous than before nor that young people are more omnivorous than their elders. The objective of the third section of this work was to see whether Quebec's administrative regions, when studied from the angle of cultural practices, are divided according to the classification of regional cultural spaces developed by Harvey and Fortin (1995) based on cultural offering. The findings show that groupings do not always fall within the classification and that practices are very heterogeneous, which makes establishing consistency within the groupings difficult. Therefore, when comparing the territories, it seems appropriate to account for the object (e.g., cultural offering or practice), the territorial scale (e.g., municipal library or national museum) and the nature of the product or practice (e.g., mobile or stationary). In conclusion, the relevance of expanding the cultural practices measured in the survey and including overriding phenomena such as values, constraints and motivation was called into question. For example, a study of motivation could clarify the omnivore pattern in Quebec. It also seems relevant to continue the reflection by studying how cultural practices are consumed, in order to see if, and how, the distinction is made.

Full textThis study examines the performance of historical characters as a form of heritage interpretation in museums and historic sites. We focus on Dramamuse, the former theatre company of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, as well as at the Animation Department of the Plains of Abraham, a historical site in Quebec City. We examine the practical dimension of their different performances by describing and analyzing the elements needed to engage with the visitors. We investigate the roles of these elements, their relevance, their advantages and disadvantages, etc. Our results show that a combination of three pillars, namely the character, the actor and the tools used by the « character-actor », create a cognitive, emotional and sensorial experience of heritage for the visitors. These results shed light on a rich and developing practice in heritage interpretation.

Full textThese past years, a change of attitude towards mining territories can be felt. Long seen as derelict or even ruined, those territories are now perceived as important historical witnesses and are, therefore, preserved as heritage landscapes. In 2012, for example, the Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin was included in the World Heritage List as an organically evolved cultural landscape. Having unique characteristics, mining landscapes are also requalified, in certain regions , as touristic attractions. They then become , just as natural landscapes are today, vectors of economic growth. The mine, harnessed for its natural ressources, is now assigned new values and, as well, new roles. Indeed, who would have thought that it would one day be managed and planned the same way beautiful landscapes are ? Conveying this new attitude towards mining sites , more and more photographers, from all backgrounds, represent them as landscapes. Artists , for example, showcase their wide range of shapes through esthetic images. With the advent of the digital era and online photography sharing, the amateur photographer , who is always searching for spectacular places to photograph , reclaims this type of representation. Disseminated on the web in an ever - increasing number, these photographies do not only attest of a new way of seeing mining territories as landscapes, but without a doubt also shape their perception. This research aims mainly at better understanding the spread of a new way of perceiving mining sites as landscapes . Since the photographic image stands as a witness and possibly as an actor of this phenomenon , it is used as the connecting piece to examine how mines can become landscapes. Focusign on the province of Quebec , this thesis analyses the practices through which mining sites are modeled and converted into landscapes, like patrimonialization, tourism development and nature restoration. These pratices, taking part in a process called empaysagement minier (mining landscaping), are then examined through photography and the landscape archetypes it produces. The photographic image quickly reveals itself as influencing not only the way we see mining sites, but it also seems to guide the way they are reappropriated and inhabited once they are perceived as landscapes . Therefore, photography and planning of mining territoires both reveal themselves as being more and more landscape oriented .

Full textJacques Cartier and Jean-François de la Rocque, de Roberval’s 1541-1543 colony at the cap Rouge near Quebec city, is at the heart of an unprecedented patrimonialization. Recent interest in this part of forgotten history is explained by a change of discourse that has emerged in the early 21st century, coinciding with the revealed of the localisation of this first French colonial endeavour in North America and its followed heritage presentation. The story thus takes a new turn; there will be no question of attempt but rather a full-fledged colony. Cartier-Roberval site is now firsthand at the center of a commemorating movement which addresses its uniqueness. The critical study of the heritage (patrimonial) process at work on this site allows a better understanding of the extent and possible outcomes of the phenomenon at hand.

Full textIn this thesis, I discuss the evolution of time experience and historical consciousness in Canadian society of the first half of the nineteenth century and propose a metahistorical analysis of two main corpora of documents : the educational material used in classical colleges, and a number of significant historiographical and political publications for the Canadian intellectual elite, from Denis-Benjamin Viger’s reflections to the Durham Report and to the writings of William Smith, Michel Bibaud and François-Xavier Garneau.By analyzing these historical documents with the use of conceptual tools inspired by the time representation historiography, I suggest a reinterpretation of the advent of a national historical consciousness in French Canada. I demonstrate that the “nationalization” of the past is a gradual phenomenon that spawned over the first three quarters of the nineteenth century. If national history was not prominent around 1800, it is because Canadian intellectuals interpreted the past with the theological principles of Christianity and the universalist philosophy of intellectual humanism. Unspecific to Canadians, this historical representation evolution was observed and commented upon by a rich occidental historiography. Entangled with the disciplinarization of history as a historical phenomenon, the categorization of the Nation and its projection in the past is neither a certainty, nor a necessity, but rather the product of a cultural evolution shared in the Atlantic World

Full textThis dissertation offers elements of a response to the question of "how to organize church in small rural parishes today. " Three periods in the history of parochial networking in the diocese of Rimouski are first identified and analyzed. In the periods from 1867-1891 and 1928-1950, we find two different dynamics which lead to the foundation of small parishes in the rural milieu: the recognition of a stable community and the support for a colonization effort in the context of economic crisis. The period from 1968-2000 presents, on the other hand, a dynamic of struggle for the survival of small parishes faced with diminishing populations. In each instance, the ideal of Christian society is sought within the framework of parish. Three ecclesiological marks are identified in view of reshaping parishes. These three marks-structured communion, fraternity-solidarity, hope-involvement-reveal much about Christian life in a parochial milieu and are suggestive of a new and motivating pastoral project
