Full textOver the last 3 billion years liquid water has an extremely limited presence on Mars. However, the multiple data available on the planet show evidences of a significant presence of liquid water from the accretion of the planet until about 3.7 billion years. The prevailing hypothesis today is that Mars had a denser atmosphere (possibly rich in CO2) early in its history. Much of this atmosphere and water were lost in space. Another possibility for reducing the amount of liquid water available and the reduction of the atmosphere is the water storage of water and CO2 in the crust. The Martian crust is studied via CRISM spectro-imaging data to characterize the early hydrothermal alteration of the planet. Serpentine and carbonates of detections confirm that the storage of a portion of the water and the atmosphere of Mars occurred. Additional constraints are provided by the geochemical modeling of serpentinization and carbonation of the Martian crust through EQ3/6 programs. The importance of serpentinization and carbonation of the Martian crust is thus reassessed. The results allow to open the debate on the role of serpentinization and carbonation on the evolution of the liquid water available and the evolution of the atmosphere. In addition, the thermodynamic conditions help provide constraints on the exobiology potential of the Martian crust

Full textThe PhD work focuses on the characterization of geological processes on planetary surfaces. Due to the lack of broad scale in situ information about the surface physical properties of the Martian materials (recording the geological processes), my work centers on the development and validation of an approach for their estimation from orbital spaceborne datasets. In addition, determining the physical properties has an implication for the spectroscopic interpretation notably for the mineral abundances. More specifically, I developed an approach for the determination and the analysis of the Martian surface scattering properties using CRISM (Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars) observations [Murchie et al., 2007] on-board MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter). CRISM provides multi-angular (varied emission angles) hyperspectral images which allow the characterization of the surface scattering behavior at ∼200m/pixel. The scattering behavior depends on the material composition but also the physical properties such as the grain size, shape, internal structure, and the surface roughness / porosity. The main objective is to observe the spatial variations of the surface scattering properties and the photometric parameters as a function of geological units. The methodology I employ is based on the estimation of the surface photometric parameters in term of surface physical properties. After an atmospheric correction (aerosols) by the Multi-angle Approach for Retrieval of the Surface Reflectance from CRISM Observations (MARS-ReCO) [Ceamanos et al., 2013] developed in collaboration with X. Ceamanos and S. Douté (IPAG, France), I analyze the surface reflectance taken at varied geometries by inverting the Hapke photometric model [Hapke, 1993] depending on six parameters (single scattering albedo, 2-term phase function, macroscopic roughness and 2-term opposition effects parameters) in a Bayesian framework [Fernando et al., 2013]. The algorithm for the correction for the aerosols and the methodology for the estimates of surface photometric parameters have been validated by comparing the results from orbit to the in situ photometric measurements from Mars Exploration Rover (MER) rovers [Fernando et al. 2013].The MER landing sites located at Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum provide an excellent opportunity to ground truth and validate the interpretation of derived Hapke photometric parameters as both orbital and in situ data are readily available over numerous geological terrains. Orbital results are consistent with the in situ observations. In my work, I mapped the surface scattering properties in and around the rover path, providing extended information over a wider area. Significant variations in the scattering properties are observed inside a CRISM observation (10x10km) suggesting that the surfaces are controlled by local geological and climatic processes [Fernando et al., in revision].The last part of this work focuses on the determination of the surface photometric parameters of different Martian geological terrains under different contexts in order to identify variabilities of the scattering properties

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the study, the implementation, the qualification and the use of a ground calibration set-up for the visible and near infrared imaging spectrometer space experiments VIRTIS and OMEGA. Over the past 20 years, imaging spectrometry was essential to remote sensing surfaces and atmospheres of planetary objects, prior and in addition to in-situ analyses. However, the last experiments also showed the complexity of the analyses of measurements resulting from this type of instruments. Indeed, artifacts from the instrument can generate wrong interpretations of the data and consequently of the inferred scientific scenarios. This needs a meticulous analysis of the instrumental responses of the developed experiments, taking a particular care to the calibration phase becoming part of the scientific analysis process. The first part of this work consisted in working out a specification document of the set-up according to the performances of the studied experiments. We could then carry out the studies relating to the various subsets leading to the realization of the calibration set-up. The validation and the characterization of the intrinsic performances of this set-up constituted most of the results of this work since they condition the quality of the calibration and thus the scientific return of the experiments. These results showed the perfect adequacy of the device carried out with the necessary specifications. The use of the device within the framework of the calibration of the VIRTIS flight model confirmed these results. In the case of OMEGA, direct measurements of mineralogical samples observed in reflectance will increase, for the first time, the possibilities of preparation of the scientific data reduction

Full textThis thesis is devoted to spectral theory of party elastic neutron transport equations introduced in 1974 by physicists E. LARSEN W and PF ZWEIFEL. The collision operator is then the sum of an inelastic part (corresponding to classical neutron transport models) and an elastic part that induces new spectral phenomena to be studied. The objective of this thesis is the analysis of their asymptotic spectrum (the part of the discrete spectrum that determines the time asymptotic behavior of the associated Cauchy problems). The spectral study of these partly elastic models involves spectral properties of bounded non-compact and symmetrizable operators. Thus the first part of the thesis deals with spectral theory of non compact symmetrizable operators on Hilbert spaces. We give a series of functional analytic results on these operators. In particular we give a method which provides us with all the real eigenvalues located outside the essential spectral disc and provide variational characterizations of these eigenvalues. The second part of the thesis focuses on spectral analysis of partly elastic isotropic and space homogeneous kinetic models (i.e. the cross sections depend only on speed modulus). Among other things, we show that the asymptotic spectrum consists at most of isolated eigenvalues with finite algebraic multiplicity. We also show that this point spectrum is real. Further we show that the number of real eigenvalues of the partly elastic transport operator increases indefinitely with the size of the spatial domain. We show also that all these eigenvalues tend to the spectral bound of the space homogeneous partly elastic operator when the size of domain tends to infinity. Most of these results are also extended to anisotropic models

Full textNew generation of imaging spectrometers are emerging in the field of space exploration by adding an additional view of measurement, the angular dimension. Multi-angle imaging spectroscopy is conceived to provide a more accurate characterization of planetary materials and a higher success in separating the signals coming from the atmosphere and the surface. The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is a hyperspectral camera that operates systematically in multi-angle mode from space. Nonetheless, multi-angle hyperspectral images are related to problems of manipulation, visualization and analysis because of their size and complexity. In this framework, this PhD thesis proposes robust statistical and physical algorithms to analyze images acquired by the CRISM instrument in an efficient manner. First, I propose a tailor-made data pipeline aimed at improving the radiometric quality of CRISM data and generating advanced products, the latter data being devised to perform fine analysis of the planet Mars. Second, I address the atmospheric correction of CRISM imagery by exploiting the multi-angle capabilities of this instrument. An innovative physically-based algorithm compensating for atmospheric effects is put forward in order to retrieve surface reflectance. This approach is particularly used in this thesis to infer the photometric properties of the materials coexisting in a specific site of Mars, the Gusev crater. Third, I perform an intercomparison of a selection of state-of-the-art techniques aimed at performing spectral unmixing of hyperspectral data acquired by the CRISM instrument. These statistical techniques are proved to be useful when analyzing hyperspectral images in an unsupervised manner, that is, without any a priori on the scene. An original strategy is proposed to discriminate the most suitable techniques for the exploration of Mars based on ground truth data built from independent high resolution imagery
