This thesis concerns the diameter and spectral gap of finite groups. Our focus shall be on the asymptotic behaviour of these quantities for sequences of finite groups arising as quotients of a fixed infinite group. In Chapter 3 we give new upper bounds for the diameters of finite groups which do not depend on a choice of generating set. Our method exploits the commutator structure of certain profinite groups, in a fashion analogous to the Solovay-Kitaev procedure from quantum computation. This is important as AGN activity has a strong effect on the evolution of their host galaxies. This thesis reports studies of a large sample of type 1 AGN, created by cross-correlating the optical SDSS DR5 quasar catalogue and the catalogue of serendipitous X-ray source detections, 2XMMi. In this thesis, the radio spectral properties of the faint sources in two deep extragalactic radio survey areas are investigated to aid in the discrimination between AGN and starbursts. . The detailed 4-point radio spectra of two X-ray bright, optically quiescent sources in the 13H XMM/Newton/ Chandra survey area are measured, and found to be flat in one case, and steep (0: rv -0.6) in another. We study elliptic diff erential and pseudo-differential operators with periodic coefficients. For a wide class of such operators we prove the Bethe-Sommerfeld conjecture, i.e. that the spectrum can have only finitely many gaps. We also study the integrated density of states of periodic Schroedinger operators and prove a lower bound for its variance in the high energy regime. A survey of the spectral properties of the classical Dirac operator on a Riemannian spin manifold is made. Killing spinors, which are special eigenfunctions of the Dirac operator, are studied and necessary conditions for their existence are given. Killing spinors on $ IR sp{n}$, $S sp{n}$ and $H sp{n}$ are also computed explicitly. Finally the transformation law for Dirac operator under conformal change of the metric is computed and a lower bound for the eigenvalues is given.

An experiment was conducted to determine whether the water depth (above soil) and soil type would have any influence on the multispectral reflectances of paddy rice, and their calculated vegetation index values. The results showed that, when vegetation cover was low (below 600 grams of dry biomass per square meter), the near infrared (NIR) reflectances decreased very little with water depth. The same was true for red reflectances, but to a lesser degree. The main object of study is the theory of Schrödinger operators with meromorphic potentials, having trivial monodromy in the complex domain. In the first part we study the spectral properties of a class of such operators related to the classical Whittaker-Hill equation (-d^2/dx^2+Acos2x+Bcos4x)Ψ=λΨ. The equation, for special choices of A and B, is known to have the remarkable property that half of the gaps eventually become closed (semifinite-gap operator).
