Aminomethylation (i.e.Mannich reaction) of benzimidazole was carried out by treating benzimidalzole with formaldehyde and 4-aminosalicylic acid. The resultant compound was designated as 1-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxyphenyl aminomethyl) benzimidazole (BI-SA).
