Prior speech and linguistics research has focused on the use of phonemes recognition in speech, and their use in formulation of recognizable words, to determine language identification. Some languages have additional phoneme sounds, which can help identify a language; however, most of the phonemes are common to a wide variety of languages. Legacy approaches recognize strings of phonemes as syllables, used by dictionary queries to see if a word can be found to uniquely identify a language. The ultimate goal of automatic speech recognition (ASR) research is to allow a computer to recognize speech in real-time, with full accuracy, independent of vocabulary size, noise, speaker characteristics or accent. Today, systems are trained to learn an individual speaker's voice and larger vocabularies statistically, but accuracy is not ideal. A small gap between actual speech and acoustic speech representation in the statistical mapping causes a failure to produce a match of the acoustic speech signals by Hidden Markov Model (HMM) methods and consequently leads to classification errors. Extra-solar planet research in particular encounters its limitations due to the non-repeatability of the fibre response. The spherical aberrations that arise due to the focal length being short compared to the lens diameter are reduced by using lens combinations called achromatic doublets, both as collimating and focusing lenses. Abstract:
In an attempt to develop a streamlined astrophotonic instrument, we demonstrate the realization of an all-photonic device capable of both multimode to single mode conversion and spectral dispersion on an 8-m class telescope with efficient coupling. The device was a monolithic photonic spectrograph which combined an integrated photonic lantern and an efficient arrayed waveguide grating device. During on-sky testing, we discovered a previously unreported type of noise that made spectral extraction and calibration extremely difficult. The source of the noise was traced to a wavelength-dependent l

Abstract:
The Large Ultraviolet/Optical/Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR) is one of four large mission concepts currently undergoing community study for consideration by the 2020 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey. LUVOIR is being designed to pursue an ambitious program of exoplanetary discovery and characterization, cosmic origins astrophysics, and planetary science. The LUVOIR study team is investigating two large telescope apertures (9- and 15-meter primary mirror diameters) and a host of science instruments to carry out the primary mission goals. Many of the exoplanet, cosmic origins, and planetary

Abstract:
The design and performance of several high resolution spectrographs for use in astronomy will be described. After a basic outline of the required theory, the design and performance of HERCULES will be presented. HERCULES is an R2 spectrograph fibre-fed from the MJUO 1-m telescope. The échelle grating has 31.6 grooves/mm and it uses a BK7 prism with a 50° apex angle in double-pass for cross-dispersion. A folded Schmidt camera is used for imaging. With a detector having an area 50 x 50 mm, and pixels less than 25 µm, HERCULES is capable of resolving powers of 40,000 to 80,000 and wavelength cove

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.<br>The Naval Postgraduate School's Middle Ultraviolet Spectrograph (MUSTANG) was designed to measure the spectrum of the Earth's airglow from 1800 A to 3400 A. The MUSTANG instrument was tested using standard techniques to determine the wavelength calibration, overall sensitivity, and detector linearity. The instrument was launched on a NASA sounding rocket on March 19, 1992, from White Sands Missile Range N.M. Post-flight tests indicate that the calibration did not change as a result of the rocket experiment.

Abstract:
The RHEA Spectrograph is a single-mode echelle spectrograph designed to be a replicable and cost effective method of undertaking precision radial velocity measurements. Two versions of RHEA currently exist, one located at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia (450 - 600nm wavelength range), and another located at the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, USA (600 - 800 nm wavelength range). Both instruments have a novel fibre feed consisting of an integral field unit injecting light into a 2D grid of single mode fibres. This grid of fibres is then reformatted into a 1D array at the i
