Full textWe describe the realization of the radio-frequency sections of a pulsed and computerized N. Q. R. Spectrometer, the design of which is derived from a system existing at the Laboratory. The performances were improved and the design made with a view to increase the versatility of the N. Q. R. Research Group facilities. The all solid-state spectrometer can be operated from a few hundred hertz up to 60 MHz. Circuits are wide-band except for the tank circuit and a tunable pass-band circuit provided to reduce the amplified noise level; as a result adjustments when operating the system are minimized and phase shift problems are eliminated. The rejection ratio of the analogic gate is increased and still 60 db at 80 MHz. The transmitting power stage, also transistorized, can deliver one hundred watts up to 60 MHz time 15 µs. The receiver pass-band is 80 MHz and its recovery when the high-Q tank circuit is not connected. The spectrometer has been used for investigating the incommensurate phase of ß-ThBr4 below 96 K. As compared with previous measurements made with a SRO spectrometer of poor re solution as line shape studies are considered, this series of investigations brings new pieces of information about the actual shape of the broad bromine N. Q. R. Line observed in the incommensurate phase below 96 K. In the range of temperature investigated so far (77-96 K), the line remains quite symmetrical with respect to its center frequency suggesting that the modulation is of the sine plane wave type. Investigation of the relaxation time, T1, shows a strong relaxation near the phase transition temperature quite probably related to the soft mode condensation at the transition temperature

Full textIon mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a technique for detection and characterization of organic vapors in air. The major objective of this study is to design, develop and characterize a novel type of IMS. We start the work with the theoretical studies concerning about, on one hand, the method of atmospheric pressure ionization (API) and ion transport; on the other hand, the mechanism of the corona discharge and its potential to be applied as ionization source. Then we analyzed the electric characteristics of the pulsed corona discharge by a series of experiments. In a point-plane electrode geometry, an electrical pulse up to 12 kV, and 500 ns pulse-width was used to generate a corona discharge in air. The number of ions collected is in the order of 10^7, which is 10 times as what can be obtained by radioactive sources. Based on the experimental data, we have constructed the spectrometer. The special features of pulsed discharge allow us to eliminate the ion gate between ionization region and drift region. Finally, the characterization of the IMS is accomplished. The prototype shows a great efficiency of the ion collection. The ion current can reach 3 nA. Its resolving power is in the order of 20. By this study, we accomplish a spectrometer which has several advantages over the conventional IMS using radioactive ionization source: higher efficiency of ion collection, free of radioactivity, simplicity of instrumentation as well as lower power consumption

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the development and the validation of an online analytical methodology for continuous measurements of nanoparticles (NPs) in the atmosphere. The particularity of this method is the capacity to determine the size and the chemical composition of each particle simultaneously, what we call mono-particular method. This work was conducted using the instrument LAAP-ToF-MS (Laser Ablation Aerosol Particle - Time of Flight - Mass Spectrometer). Being dedicated for single aerosol measurements, four parts constitute this instrument: aerodynamic lenses are used to introduce aerosols into the instrument, an optical detection system to determine the particles size and synchronize the laser shot used for the ionization process, and the produced ions are then analyzed by a Time of Flight (ToF) analyzer. The work is organized in four parts:The first part consists in the characterization of the LAAP-ToF-MS in order to determine the performances of each of its four parts. The results of this work were published in the international journal "Atmospheric Measurement Techniques".The second part is dedicated to the development of a quantitative analytical method and published in "Talanta" journal. The orientation of the third part is going into the direction of instrumental development to measure NPs not associated to aerosols (Ø<100 nm). Being the first development of this kind using the LAAP-ToF-MS, the work is highlighted by a patent which is under validation. In the end, the last part is dedicated to examples of concrete applications and the usefulness of the LAAP-ToF-MS instrument to study NPs during laboratory experiments as well as for field campaigns

Full textDue to the important properties of selenium, numerous works have been undertaken to realize the speciation analysis of this element. The coupling of an HPLC with a mass spectrometer is commonly used. This report presents the improvements realized on the existing methods to simultaneously analyse inorganic and organic species at the ultratrace level. We have used the last generation of quadrupole ICPMS equipped with collision/reaction cell to remove argon based polyatomic intereferences on major selenium isotopes. The optimization of this device as well as improvement of analytical steps before detection have been carefully realised. The developed techniques have been validated and applied to different water and biological samples at the ng(Se). L-1 level
