Spectrum width is a WSR-88D product that has been available to operational forecasters since the radar was deployed. In 2008, super-high-resolution reflectivity, velocity and spectrum width data became available. Six cases exemplifying operational use of spectrum width are presented; five are from after the upgrade. The cases were selected to depict the wide array of uses of spectrum width (SW). In one case, use of SW improved forecaster capability to evaluate the strength of horizontal shear within a bow echo’s mesovortex. One case shows that SW can be extremely helpful in determining locatio

Abstract There is an additional zero mean random variable term that couples mean wind shear and turbulence in the Doppler radar spectrum width equation. This random variable, labeled the “coupled term,” has been neglected heretofore in the literature. Herein, the variance of the squared spectrum width ascribed to this coupled term is determined from data collected with a Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) in two snowstorms; it can exceed 1 m4 s−4. Thus, this coupled term can be a significant contributor to the variance of the spectrum width and must be considered when using spec

The effect of finite spectral width on the modulational instability of Alfvén waves described by the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation is investigated using a method developed by Alber to derive a transport equation for the spectral density. The dispersion relation for a monochromatic wave is regained for a delta spectrum. It is shown that the growth rate and domain of modulational instability diminish as the spectral width increases for both the Gaussian and uniform spectrums.

The rapid growth of wireless services and the breakneck proliferation of wireless devices continue to strain limited spectrum resource. While the need for efficient spectrum sharing mechanisms has been emphasized, opportunistic spectrum access has been considered as a promising mechanism for dynamic spectrum sharing. However, although the idle spectrum could exist, it is usually rather fragmented and distributed, and hence the secondary network users would face the difficulty in finding required contiguous spectrum. We describe in this paper results of a system study for an airborne lidar system that makes real-time, range-resolved measurements of clear air turbulence (CAT) to several kilometers forward of an aircraft's projected flight path. Exploiting the width of the IF signal Doppler spectrum (σf) is central to the system concept. Since broadening of the Doppler spectrum beyond the transform limit is a function of the mixture of velocities (velocity width, σv) in the pulse scattering volume, any combination of shear and/or turbulence in the flight path is immediately revealed by the broadened spectra.

The spectral tunability of quantum well semiconductor lasers is found to approach the range of dye lasers. Gain spectra calculations predict, for a particular pumping condition, a wide spectral range of nearly flat gain from quantum well lasers. This flattening results from contributions to the gain, at high pumping current, from electron-hole transitions in the second (n = 2) quantized state. In addition, the gain spectrum is stretched out to shorter wavelengths. Consequently, properly designed quantum well lasers can have an effective tuning range 2 to 3 times that of conventional semiconduc

A total of 9 pressure spectra, 4 for oil pipelines and 5 for gas pipelines, have been collected and used as inputs for the software. It was found that a pressure spectrum can be quantified using a parameter termed as Spectra Factor to represent the severity of l

Abstract:
This report is one of a series of reports documenting the methods and findings of a multi-year, multi-disciplinary project coordinated by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) and funded by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA). The overall project is titled “Quantifying the Performance of Retrofit of Cripple Walls and Sill Anchorage in Single-Family Wood-Frame Buildings,” henceforth referred to as the “PEER–CEA Project.” The overall objective of the PEER–CEA Project is to provide scientifically based information (e.g., testing, analysis, and resulting loss models) that
