Abstract:

Four Latin panegyrics survive from the period 289 to 298. They originate from Gaul. The empire was governed by collegiate rule, with Diocletian and Maximian joint Augusti (the Dyarchy) until 293, when the imperial college was expanded to four (the Tetrarchy) with the promotion to the subordinate rank of Caesar of Constantius and Galerius. To meet the threats of usurpers and external enemies, the emperors exercised their authority in different parts of the Empire and were rarely together. The creation of collegiate government posed a novel challenge for panegyrists; they had to balance the impulse to praise the individual addressee with the need to integrate him into the wider government. These potentially competing demands were intensified by the circumstances of the delivery of the speeches, since loyalty had to be expressed to both present and absent emperors. A tension existed between the ideologies of governmental unity and individualism. A texture of tension and resolution is generated in the four speeches. The dynamics of vocative address are used to articulate loyalty. Figurations of the unity of government are employed to signal the relationships between the emperors and their resulting cosmic significance. Individual profiles are cut for the emperors primarily through the use of mythological and historical exempla. The signa Jovius and Herculius, which the emperors assumed, are exploited to characterize and differentiate them. In their detail and overall ideologies, differences between the four speeches are distinct. Each orator adapted the conventions of the genre to an evolving political landscape; furthermore, varying and sometimes competing loyalties are revealed. Panegyric is seen to be capable of great versatility and nuance.

Uma memória que pode integrar ou esquecer muitos grupos diferentes. Entender a definição estatal atual e pretérita sobre os desaparecidos, permite entender como o Estado produz os desaparecidos e mortos políticos. A reelaboração dos discursos sobre os desaparecidos deriva de diversos conflitos sociais que permeiam a discussão da memória e do lembrar e esquecer. Essa pesquisa busca desenvolver como a memória é veiculada nos diversos documentos e como se pode ler as suas mudanças no decorrer dos anos a fim de contar uma determinada história. É também na maneira de contar a história que pode aperfeiçoar os direitos políticos e civis na democracia. Os documentos, aqui, analisados são produzidos por civis, familiares de pessoas mortas e desaparecidas políticas, e, posteriormente, pela Casa Civil da Presidência. A memory that can integrate or forget many different groups. Understanding the present and past state definition of the disappeared allows us to understand how the state produces the disappeared and the political dead. The reelaboration of the discourses on the disappeared derives from diverse social conflicts that permeate the discussion of memory and remember and forget. This research seeks to develop how memory is conveyed in the various documents and how one can read its changes over the years in order to tell history. It is the way of telling the history that can improve political and civil rights in democracy. The documents analyzed here are produced by civilians, relatives of political dead and missing people, and later, by the Civil House of the Presidency. They are: Brasil: Nunca Mais (1985), Dossiê dos mortos e desaparecidos políticos de 1964 (1995), Lei 9.140/95 (1995), Livro-Relatório da CEMDP (2007), Lei 12.528/2011 (2011), Relatório Final da CNV (2014). To read these documents, the interpretations of M. Foucault (2005) regarding the elaboration of the truth by documents and the inquiry, the basis of the current legal system, are essential. Para tanto, foi elaborada uma Sequência Didática de natureza interdisciplinar onde se buscou, pela análise do corpus, 30 textos dissertativos argumentativos, entender quais esquemas argumentativos vinculados à Nova Retórica e tipos de argumentos sociocientíficos são utilizados pelos discentes, ao abordar o tema Controvérsias sobre o rio Tietê. Vale salientar que o produto vinculado a esta investigação de Mestrado Profissional é uma Sequência Didática interdisciplinar direcionada a 3ªs séries do Ensino Médio. Também se espera contribuir para o ensino de Língua Portuguesa e para outros trabalhos que envolvam o desenvolvimento da capacidade argumentativa, atrelado ao exercício da cidadania. Por isso, apresenta-se uma proposta de trabalho pautada no diálogo entre os componentes curriculares e no uso de controvérsias sociocientíficas locais. Para a produção do gênero discursivo secundário dissertação escolar, o aluno precisa dialogar com saberes de diversas disciplinas. For this purpose, was prepared a didactic sequence of interdisciplinary nature where it sought by analysing the corpus, 30 argumentative dissertative texts, to understand which argumentative schemes linked to the New Rhetoric and types of socio-scientific arguments are used by students when approaching Controversy topic about Tietê river. It is noteworthy that the linked product to this Professional Master's research is an interdisciplinary Teaching Sequence directed to 3rd year of high school. It is also expected to contribute to the teaching of Portuguese language and other works that involve the development of argumentative skills, linked to the exercise of citizenship. This theory is widely used in work on curricular policies, pointing out that these are modified, selected and adapted when moving from its field of production for the field of reproduction, respecting values, ideologies and interest of the latter. Bring it to research on their own practice is to believe that the teacher has an internal structure itself, which directs the modifications and adaptations that make the various speeches that coming to him, for example, curriculum, textbooks, educational theories, teaching methodologies and guidance it receives from various official bodies such as the Secretary of Education. To understand this process of recontextualization reviewed my career in education and as a starting point the end of the graduation in Physics in 2007, ending with thw entry into Master's Degree in 2010. Abstract:

This study asks whether and how the presidential inaugural address influences American audiences. The current study explores how the 2017 Presidential Inaugural Address of Donald Trump influences audiences. Two areas were studied: Candidate image and the state of the nation. I hypothesized that participants who watched the address would have different attitudes regarding candidate image and the state of the nation compared to non-viewers. I also hypothesized that viewers of the address who voted for Donald Trump would respond differently to candidate image and the state of the nation when compared with those who did not vote for Trump. With one exception, none of the findings was significant. That is, attitudes of inaugural address viewers and non-viewers were similar, and attitudes of those who voted for the president and those who did not vote for the president were also similar. The exception was noted between those who voted for the candidate and oppositional voters: Those who voted for Donald Trump reported the nation is headed "in the right direction" while dissenters disagreed.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to investigate the functioning of talking about the woman , in a speech by the President of Brazil , Dilma Rousseff , representative of the Workers Party ( PT) , at the opening of the debate of the 66th General Assembly of the United Nations ( UN) , held in New York in the United States in September 2011. Whereas important elements of discourse , we find the conditions of production in which the speech was made , the position and social position occupied by the subject -speaker as well as the political- ideological and discursive memory brands in verified statement and that made said ( or not said ) made sense. In support of our study , support us on a theoretical and methodological apparatus of Discourse Analysis of the French line , made from a link between theories of language , from a pragmatic- discursive perspective sustained by authors like Pêcheux Orlandi and Charaudeau. During the research, we note that President Dilma Rousseff as the subject which was constituted authority , transformed his own social and historical condition , built positive images of themselves and at the same time , deconstructed and shifted linguistic- discursive contexts derived senses patriarchal domination.<br>A presente dissertação tem por objetivo averiguar o funcionamento da fala sobre a mulher, no discurso proferido pela presidente do Brasil, Dilma Rousseff, representante do Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), por ocasião da abertura do debate da 66ª Assembleia Geral da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), ocorrida em Nova Iorque, nos Estados Unidos, em setembro de 2011. Considerando elementos importantes da discursividade, verificamos as condições de produção em que o discurso foi produzido, a posição e o lugar social ocupados pelo sujeito-orador, bem como as marcas político-ideológicas e a memória discursiva verificadas no pronunciamento que fizeram com que o dito (não-dito) fizesse sentido. Para fundamentar o nosso estudo, apoiamos-nos num aparato teórico-metodológico da Análise do Discurso da linha francesa, constituído a partir de uma articulação entre as teorias da linguagem, sob uma perspectiva pragmático-discursiva, sustentada por autores como Pêcheux, Orlandi e Charaudeau. No decorrer da pesquisa, pudemos constatar que a presidente Dilma Rousseff, enquanto sujeito que foi constituído como autoridade, transformou sua própria condição social e histórica, construiu imagens positivas de si e, ao mesmo tempo, deslocou-se e desconstruiu sentidos linguístico-discursivos, oriundos de contextos patriarcais de dominação.

Abstract:

Dans le cadre d’une approche philosophique et épistémologique, qui privilège le point de vue rhétorique sur l’argumentation et la ligne de pensée Aristote-Vico-Perelman, la thèse essaye d’analyser la construction de la subjectivité dans le discours argumentatif. Je cherche à montrer qu’il est possible de tracer une théorie de l’argumentation dans laquelle subjective n’est pas synonyme de fallacieuse.<p>En général, la thèse analyse le rôle de celui qui parle et de celui qui écoute dans l’argumentation et dans tous les discours. Je vais soutenir est que la dimension personnelle n’est pas un élément qu’il faut supprimer mais, au contraire, un élément essentiel du discours argumentatif.<p><p>Une approche rhétorique au problème du sujet se base sur une intuition fondamentale de la rhétorique d’Aristote .Comme nous le savons, dans le premier livre de la Rhétorique, Aristote affirme que le discours (logos) est composé (synkeimai) de trois éléments :l’orateur, le sujet traité et l’auditoire .Au même temps la rhétorique est composée des trois éléments :Logos, Pathos et Ethos. La pratique linguistique inclut la dimension émotive, l’orateur et l’auditoire, qui sont des éléments discursifs. De même, l’ethos et le pathos ne sont pas des moyens de preuves irrationnelles ou des fallacies. Abstract:

In three papers, I consider two questions of nationalization in American politics, and one question of the methodology necessary to study them. Nationalization is the process by which local politics become more like national politics on the basis of political issues and electoral engagement. It is usually measured using the difference in presidential and state-level electoral returns over time. To expand the study of nationalization, I use automated content analysis to derive new measures for the phenomenon’s study based on political text. In particular, I apply automated content analysis via latent dirichlet allocation to code for salient topics in text from national political agenda speech, local agenda speech, and state laws. The primary source for these local agenda codes is a novel database of State of the State addresses, which are like presidential State of the Union addresses, but are delivered by governors. I developed the database over the past seven years as part of this dissertation; it draws from all 50 States, and the earliest captured addresses date to the year 1893. The secondary sources for these codes are the State of the Union addresses and a corpus of laws passed by state legislatures. I utilize the codes from these naturally distinct text corpora to study the nationalization of the political agenda, and how nationalized elections relate to the production of salient laws. The comparison of naturally distinct texts, however, is problematic and requires further examination. To that end, the first paper, “A Theory and Method for Pooling Naturally Distinct Corpora” concerns the theory and method for why we should be able to use, pool, and compare the computer-generated codes from these naturally distinct text corpora to study nationalization. I propose a theoretical framework with which the researcher may defend the pooling of corpora, and introduce an empirical approach to testing for absolute comparability, the delta-statistic. While statistics like the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and penalized log likelihood can help the researcher to determine if a model fits the pooled corpora better than the corpora separately, the delta-statistic relies on a strong theory of latent traits to evaluate the absolute quality of a pooled model. This is especially important when it is impossible to evaluate ground truth fit because some data are unlabeled. The second paper, “Have State Policy Agendas Become More Nationalized?” examines whether the nationalization of state policy agendas is related to the nationalization of gubernatorial elections. The analysis shows that State agendas, as laid out in the State of the State addresses, have become more similar to each other over time. It also shows that State agendas have become more similar to the national agenda, as laid out in the State of the Union addresses. Finally, I demonstrate an increasing relationship between the similarity in the agenda and the nationalization of elections. The findings suggest that the nationalization of the agenda is a significant and related factor to the nationalization of elections. The third paper, “Can States Govern Effectively When Politics Are Nationalized?” considers the question of whether electoral nationalization moderates the relationship between divided government and legislative productivity in the states. I find a null effect of divided government on salient lawmaking ability, and that nationalization of state legislatures has generally decreased the production of salient laws. The result holds even though nationalization is unrelated to the ability of our state governments to take action on salient issues during times of divided government. The findings suggest that behavioral factors driving lawmaker decisions may be more to blame for lawmaking defects than institutional ones. Taken together, the essays demonstrate the value of text analysis to the analysis of nationalization and other research topics in American politics.

Abstract:

This thesis examines Senator John McCain’s concession address from the 2008 United States Presidential election campaign. McCain’s concession speech was significant because of his come-from-behind victory in the Republican primary, the favorable critical responses to his speech, and his response to the historic nature of a person of color winning the presidential election. This study is also significant because it contributes to the small body of literature that examines concession addresses. This study examined how well McCain’s concession speech demonstrated the qualities associated with the genre, if McCain’s concession functioned as a model speech, and whether McCain’s concession might signal an evolution of the genre. The method used to critique McCain’s concession was generic application, using a combined framework of Chesebro and Hamsher’s (1974) and Ritter and Howell’s (1974) characteristics of the concession genre. This method entailed applying the characteristics of the concession genre to McCain’s speech to determine if the artifact constitutes a strong example of the genre. The study found that McCain’s speech demonstrated qualities associated with the genre of concession speeches well, functioning as a model because he utilized rhetorical techniques that were uniquely successful for him, and that scholars and practitioners of should be flexible in their application of the genre constraints associated with concession speeches.<br>Department of Communication Studies

M.A. (Communication)<br>The two research questions explored in this study are: a) What is the potential effectiveness of Mandela's rhetorical choices in the light of the primary and media audiences and the situation, in the selected speeches and visual material? b) What rhetorical shifts occurred in the speeches delivered between 1990 and 1994? In view of the fact that this study is political in nature and falls within the parameters of political communication, the field of political communication as it relates to rhetoric and public speaking specifically, was discussed. The nucleus of Aristotle's theory of rhetoric was discussed in conjunction with modern theories and research, with the purpose of establishing theoretical grounds for effective political oratory. To explore the two research questions, the neo-Aristotelian model of rhetorical criticism was utilised. By using this model it was possible to measure the effectiveness or potential effectiveness of Nelson Mandela's choice of strategy in the series of speeches and visual material selected. The model also prescribes a methodology whereby the important variables in political oratory are measured, including language, the credibility of the speaker, emotional strategies, logical argumentation, organisation and nonverbal behaviour. For purposes of evaluation the model prescribes an ideal model of persuasion. The ancient and modern rhetorical theory discussed in the study was utilised to construct standards by which Mandela's speeches were evaluated. The model also enabled the critic to focus on the speaker, Nelson Mandela and his political messages, while considering the rhetorical transaction, including the audiences and situation as a whole. The primary audience considered in this study consists of the mainly black supporters of the ANC who received Mandela's political messages at mass rallies. It was determined that this audience had a positive orientation towards the speaker, his messages and the ANC. Important national media audiences were also fsolated and include Whites, Indians, Coloureds, the IFP and the PAC. These audiences maintained a more negative orientation towards the speaker, his messages and the ANC. The international community in general was also considered.

Abstract:

This thesis examines three case studies in presidential rhetoric in order to explore the genre of domestic crisis rhetoric as defined by Theodore O. Windt (1990). Windt (1986) notes the impressive scholarship on the rhetoric of war and international crises, but also laments the “neglect” of research into “equally significant speeches on domestic „crises,‟ especially those concerned with economic issues” (p. 104). Windt (1990) proposes a generic model that views domestic crisis rhetoric through a dialectic lens that explores how the discourse defines the president‟s policy and how it depicts the policy of the president‟s opponents. This study examines three of the most important presidential rhetorical texts on domestic issues of the last 50 years, each by a different president and each addressing a different domestic political issue – Barack Obama‟s September 9, 2009 address on health care reform, George W. Bush‟s September 19 and September 24, 2008 speeches on the financial crisis, and Lyndon Johnson‟s call for a “war on poverty” in his January 8, 1964 State of the Union address – with the goal of testing the generalizability of the genre across time and gaining a better understanding of how presidents respond to – and create – exigency through rhetoric.<br>Introduction and overview -- Literature review -- Method -- Barack Obama and health care reform -- George W.
