This study provides a global, detailed, and complete energy-saving map of strong ocean currents from the absolute geostrophic velocities calculated from satellite altimetry data, with the focus on the strong Western Boundary Currents (WBCs) in the global ocean. This chapter reviews how electricity can be generated from waves and tides. The UK is an excellent example, as the British Isles have rich wave and tidal resources. The technologies for converting wave power into electricity are easily categorized by location type. 1. Shoreline schemes. Shoreline Wave Energy Converters (WECs) are installed permanently on shorelines, from where the electricity is easily transmitted and may even meet local demands. They operate most continuously in locations with a low tidal range. A disadvantage is that less power is available compared to nearshore resources because energy is lost as waves reach the shore. 2. Nearshore schemes. Nearshore WECs are normally floating structures needing seafloor anchoring or inertial reaction points. The advantages over shoreline WECs are that the energy resource is much larger because nearshore WECs can access long-wavelength waves with greater swell, and the tidal range can be much larger. However, the electricity must be transmitted to the shore, thus raising costs. 3. Offshore schemes. Offshore WECs are typically floating structures that usually rely on inertial reaction points. Tidal range effects are insignificant and there is full access to the incident wave energy resource. However, electricity transmission is even more costly. Tidal power technologies fall into two fundamental categories:1. Barrage schemes. In locations with high tidal range a dam is constructed that creates a basin to impound large volumes of water. Water flows in and out of the basin on flood and ebb tides respectively, passing though high efficiency turbines or sluices or both. The power derives from the potential energy difference in water levels either side of the dam. 2. Tidal current turbines. Tidal current turbines (also known as free flow turbines) harness the kinetic energy of water flowing in rivers, estuaries, and oceans. The physical principles are analogous to wind turbines, allowing for the very different density, viscosity, compressibility, and chemistry of water compared to air. Waves are caused by winds, which in the open ocean are often of gale force (speed &gt;14 m/s).

This chapter examines the hydrographic work of the U.S. Naval Observatory and Hydrographical Office under the leadership of Lieutenant Matthew Fontaine Maury, 1842-1861, a tenure in which Maury brought the Navy to the forefront of antebellum American applied and theoretical science and embarked upon revolutionary new cartographic conventions in his Wind and Current Charts series. Maury pushed and considerably expanded the boundaries of the hydrographic chart to include wind speed, ocean temperature, ship tracks, and whales, among other things, creating a partnership with American and foreign mariners to collect and systematize data about the marine environment thereby significantly shortening the length of voyages under sail, and breaking down the rule-of-thumb navigational methods deeply-rooted in maritime culture. With Maury’s publication of The Physical Geography of the Sea in 1855, he became the intellectual and political rival and sometime enemy of key leaders in the American civilian scientific community. Nevertheless, this chapter argues that at a time when the U.S. Navy, the American maritime community, and civilian science were diverging, Maury was just the sort of figure who could bridge increasingly widening intellectual, cultural, and institutional gaps between them.

Today, one of the priority scientific directions in marine sciences is the study of the spatial distribution of hydrophysical characteristics in the marine environment by remote measurements methods. To studying the spatio-temporal variability of water temperature and salinity in the active layer of the marine environment, it is necessary to use the data of their vertical and spatial distribution. Today there does not exist an easy way to get a in situ data for the analysis of the thermohaline structure in the marine environment. Indirect definitions of the vertical and spatial distribution of water temperature and salinity through the development of various methods for the calculation of thermohaline characteristics are used to date. Main purpose of this work is to study the thermohaline structure in the active layer of the Black Sea according to the calculated hydrophysical characteristics based on satellite and hydroacoustic data. The study of the vertical distribution of water temperature and salinity in the Black Sea was carried out in the deep-water part sea at standard levels (0, 10, 20, 25, 30, 50 meters) in the spring –autumn period. This area of research is represented by the highest number of measurements and is included in the Main Black Sea current zone. The calculations of thermohaline characteristics in the marine environment are based on the original methods of calculating the vertical distribution of water temperature, sound speed and salinity of water by satellite and hydroacoustic data. These methods were developed in the State Institute “Hydroacoustic Branch of Institute of Geophysics by S.I. Subbotin name of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”. Mathematical and physical-statistical methods of calculation were used in the developed methods. For the efficiency of calculations an Automated Program Complex (APC) for calculating the vertical distribution of temperature and salinity fields in the marine environment by satellite and hydroacoustic data has been developed and tested on the example of the Black Sea. The initial data for the calculations using the APC are only daily satellite data of the sea surface temperature. Based on the results of calculations of the APC, maps of the vertical distribution of temperature and salinity of water on zonal and meridional sections in the Black Sea in the period of spring – autumn 2018 were developed. Analysis of the results of calculations of the vertical distribution of thermohaline characteristics made it possible to identify the main features in these distributions. The features of the spatial-temporal distribution of thermohaline parameters have been analysed. The confirmation of the state of the thermohaline regime inherent in the Black Sea in the warm season was obtained. The results of calculations of the vertical distribution of thermohaline characteristics in the Black Sea deep-water area on the basis of satellite and hydroacoustic data using the developed methods showed the possibility and expediency of their application in the layer 0-50 meters in the period May-October for a detailed analysis of the state of the thermohaline structure. The developed methods and principles of building an the APC for calculation of vertical distribution of temperature and salinity fields of water according to satellite and hydroacoustic data can be applied for analysis and monitoring of others water area of the World Ocean taking into account their hydrological conditions.

Izu island chain south of Tokyo, Japan has been considered as a prospective area for ocean renewable energy development because of relatively strong tidal currents, and the Kuroshio current. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurement near one of the islands, Kozu island, was conducted to know ocean current variability. The ADCP, Signature500, was installed 700m away from the coast and the water depth is 32m there. The observation period is for a month from January 8th, 2017.
