Abstract:
A new lattice-Boltzmann finite-element method is used to simulate large numbers of deformable red blood cells and platelets in suspension for the investigation of stress-mediated platelet-deposition mechanisms in blood. The coupled lattice-Boltzmann finite-element method provides the novel ability to simulate hundreds of realistic and deformable red blood cells and produce continuum-scale physics at physiologic hematocrit and low arterial-shear rates. The new method is developed and shown to produce single red blood cell deformation consistent with experimental results in flow chambers. Simu

Abstract:
The Cu(In,Ga)Se2-based thin film solar cell is a promising candidate for becoming one of the more important solar cell technologies in the near future. In order to realize such a development a significant reduced production cost of the Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) layer is needed. This work shows a possible way towards such a reduction by increasing the deposition rate and decreasing the CIGS thickness with almost maintained device efficiency. Obtaining an improved device performance in CIGS-based solar cells by using an in-depth variation of the band gap has earlier been investigated without any clear

Abstract:
Today's economic and ecological directives demand for highly sustainable machine parts by low production cost and energy consumption. Consequently, it is crucial to guarantee a long service life by protecting all components against wear and corrosion. However, hydraulic components always include stressed surfaces, which suffer from heavy loads at high relative speeds. To prevent fretting, coating processes like thermal spraying or hard chrome have a long history in the field of hydraulics. New additive laser-based processes like EHLA and LPBF offer the potential to apply new coatings without e

A rapid, mask-less deposition technique for writing metal tracks has been developed. The technique was based on laser-induced chemical vapour deposition. The novelty in the technique was the usage of pulsed ultrafast lasers instead of continuous wave lasers in pyrolytic dissociation of the chemical precursor. The motivation of the study was that (1) ultrafast laser pulses have smaller heat affected zones thus the deposition resolution would be higher, (2) the ultrashort pulses are absorbed in most materials (including those transparent to the continuous wave light at the same wavelength) thus

Electrospinning is a method of using high voltage electric fields to transform polymer solutions into nano-scale fibres. The field has seen significant work on processing different polymers and their resulting fibres but less work has focused the electrospinning process itself. The aim of this thesis is to present experimental observations of charge behaviour in the electrospinning process in the context of the underlying physics typically used to describe electrospinning. This thesis presents a review of existing methods of measuring aspects of the electrospinning process, and reviews publish

This thesis is about fundamental interaction mechanisms of laser remote fusion cutting, RFC, which is based on the formation of a quasi-stationary laser-induced boiling front that causes drop ejection, preferably downwards. Laser cutting of metals, invented in 1967, has developed from a niche to a well established high quality cutting technique in the manufacturing industry. Usually a gas jet is employed concentric to the laser beam, to eject the molten metal. One technique option, interesting though hardly applied yet because of usually low quality and speed, is remote laser cutting. Two tech
