Full textDissertation involves optimization of detector AB system Quantulus 1220TM for development of methods for determination of individual radionuclides 3H, 222Rn and 90Sr, as well as gross alpha/beta activity in waters. Presented experiments had purpose of calibration of the system, investigation of relevant parameters influence on activity measurements of alpha and beta emitters, as well as setting the optimum values of these parameters. Special attention was devoted to PSA discriminator value setting, i.e. adjusting the pulse shape analyzer level at optimum value for an optimal separation of alpha from beta events, as well as testing the effects of quenching in the samples and methods for quench correction. Presented developed methods are fast, efficient and simple, which is especially important in the case of a radiation accident, when there is a need to quickly determine the content of radionuclides in water samples, and their validity has been demonstrated within the framework of international and inter-laboratory ntercomparison measurements.

Full textWe present the research on incomplete fusion reaction mechanism in nuclear collisions at low energies, performed at Heavy Ion Laboratory of the University of Warsaw. The 122Sn(20Ne,alphaxn)138-xCe reaction was investigated at two beam energies of 141MeV and 150MeV using the new EAGLE array, constructed in the frame of this thesis. For the presented measurement, the EAGLE was composed out of a set of a high-resolution Compton-suppressed Ge detectors and an almost 4π array of ΔE silicon detectors, for the spectroscopy of γ-rays and detection of charged particles, respectively. The data were interpreted using a Monte-Carlo code called COMPA, based on the statistical theory. The code was supplemented by the possibility of simulating the performance of experimental set-up and the detection of charged particles. The results point to the important role of the incomplete fusion, which contributes significantly to the total cross section of the investigated reaction.
