Full textThis PhD aims to study caves and subterranean karst infillings deposits from Charente (Touvre catchment) as a memory of past climate and environments. From the concept of site effect, the two studied caves (Bois du Clos and Fuie) show an original recording of the regional palaeoclimatic conditions of the Middle-Upper Pleistocene and of the Holocene. The prominent role of the ghost-rock processe during the long geological time of Lower Cretaceous (45 Ma) was demonstrated by the study of three quarries, drilling and the young cave of La Fuie. This alteration process explains the genesis of labyrinthic caves and also the complexity of the Touvre aquifer which supplies the city of Angoulême. Indeed the large water reserve is situated into the porous rock (slow drainage) while a small part is drained by the karst conduits (fast drainage coming from river losses). The geochemical, sedimentological and mineralogical studies of detrital infillings deposits into Bois du Clos and la Fuie allowed to characterize hydrosedimentary dynamics and palaeoenvironmental conditions between marine isotope stages 6 and 3, obtained by 14C et U/Th in speleothems of Bois du Clos cave. The microchemical imagery by X-ray fluorescence has highlighted the existence of some carbonated levels related to the process of speleogenesis by ghost rock and the major role of groundwater level fluctuations. The compared chronostratigraphic study of the regional speleological and archaeological sequences finally allowed reflecting the role of local and regional settings, as well as global parameters in palaeoclimate

Full textThis thesis results from a ten years search about human presence and arrangements of natural caves. First, our assumption stood out clearly with prejudices often repeated about caves, allways and anywhere frigtening people and keeping them abroad. Now, caves had full place in traditional development of limestone countries and montains. In so far as there was an actual interest, nobody never hesitated in going underground nor in facing great difficulties and risks. In the first two chapters are collected elements of proof and the human presence in caves is looked at in all its various bearings : shelters-caves, caves arranged to forteresses and maturing cheese places, caves turned in sanctuaries and so on. . . Third chapter deals with underground tourism, where interface caves as they were perceived by local populations able to catch a little money with visitors, and underground landscapes contemplated by urban travellers. Genesis of this touristic ressource had narrow links with progress of cave science, history of sensibilities and needing in touristic attractions around spas. Fourth and fifth chapters forsake daily presence in caves and take an interest in scientific and patrimonial status of caves : as varius sights of caves were discovered, progressively grows the care of their protection. Around 300 caves and pot-holes are today protected in France by several laws and status here studied

Full textThe aim of this work is to propose a number of milestone in the history of these karstic regions, proceeding from examples of underground alpine networks. In the high limestone alps of Salzburg, the karst of the Tennengebirge has undergone modifications since the tertiary with the development of a cone karst and vast tiered networks. The Cosa nostra - Bergerhohle system came into being in the plio-quaternary period as a consequence of the combined effect of upthrust and glaciation. The low plateau of the ile de cremieu conceals an ancient karstic topography oblitarated by glacial deposits. The cave of la Balme has evolved at least since the early pleistocene in acordance with variations in the base level of the rhone. In the Prealps, the dent de crolles and the moucherotte conceal subhorizontal perched conduits dating back to the Pliocene. Their development went on during the Pleistocene. In the Vercors, the Vallier cave harbours sediments of the lower Pleistocene, unique alpine evidence of the glaciation of the time. Underground deposits permit the reconstruction of the history of these networks and their environment. The u th method and paleomagnetism provide ages in the early and middle Pleistocene. Sedimentology, mineralogy and the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility of detrital deposits are studied. Reshaping of weathered rocks and glacial sediments, notably varves, are the most typical. Corrosion in the temporarily phreatic zone plays a major part in the speleogenesis. The

Full textThis thesis documents the physical processes involved in the opening and subsequent filling of the Cerro Benítez cavities (Chilean Patagonia), which led to the trapping of sediments rich in extinct megafaunal remains and archaeological material of Pleistocene age in the vicinity of the Patagonian ice cap during the last glacial termination. The mapping of glacial landforms and the dating of erratic boulder exposure surfaces by in situ cosmogenic 10Be, combined with chronological modelling using Bayesian statistics, lead us first to propose an absolute chronology of deglaciation and proglacial lacustrine regression. Electrical resistivity tomography, combined with 3D cave modelling, reveals the existence of stepped planation surfaces buried in the caves, leading us to formulate a model of glaciolacustrine speleogenesis. Finally, comparative stratigraphy combined with grain-size, crystallographic, geochemical and micromorphological analysis of the sedimentary fillings of nine cavities, including the famous Cueva del Milodón, reveals the influence of bedrock and climatic fluctuations during the last glacial termination on the genesis of megafauna-bearing sediments
