Abstract:
The article provides a survey of carbonised seed finds in south and central Sweden which can be attributed to the Swedish Bronze Age, 1800—500 B.C. This period must be considered one of the most dynamic with regard to prehistoric agriculture. The material has been collected at prehistoric dwelling sites and largely consists of household refuse. During the Early Bronze Age agriculture was based on speltoid wheat's and naked barley. Around 1000 B.C. the speltoid wheats and the naked barley decline strongly, while hulled barley takes over as the most important crop. This shift in the choice of crop indicates the introduction of agricultural fertilization and systems with permanent, manured fields.

Abstract:
Speltoid spikes occur when the dose of Q, (suppressor of speltoidy) located on the long (q) arm of chromosome 5A, decreases from the normal two to one or none. In crossed or selfed progeny of wheat lines that carry the gametocidal genes, Gc1a or Gc1b, 35 speltoid mutants appeared independently. The nature of the mutants, whether due to gene mutation or due to chromosome deletion, including the Q gene, was investigated. The mutants in the M1 generation were self-pollinated and segregation of the character in the M2 was observed. Speltoid plants in the M2 were crossed with ditelosomic 5AL (20II + tII), and pairing between the telosome 5AL and the chromosome that caused speltoidy was observed. Of the 25 lines that were analyzed by the two methods, 22 had a chromosome deletion on the long arm of chromosome 5A, the length of which was variable. The chromosome with deletion could be classified into at least three groups by comparison with the length of telo-univalent 5AL. In the M3 generation, six homozygous deletion lines were selected. Chromosome breakage that resulted in the deletions could be due to the involvement of a transposable element or a restriction – modification system.Key words: Triticum aestivum, Aegilops speltoides, gametocidal gene, chromosome breakage, mutation.

Abstract:
The genes for speltoid suppression (Q) and β-amylase (β-Amy-A2) in common wheat (Triticum aestivum) were mapped cytologically on the long arm of chromosome 5A by using four 5Aq deletion lines produced by the action of gametocidal genes of Aegilops speltoides. A line with 13% terminal deletion in the whole long arm lacked both β-Amy-A2 and Q, indicating that these genes are confined within the terminal area. According to the genetic map, four other genes distal to β-Amy-A2, B1 (awn suppression), Hn (hairy node), Vrn1 (vernalization), and Kr2 (crossability), must also exist in this 13% terminal area. The β-Amy-A2 gene is mapped at 20 centimorgans (cM) from the centromere, and map distance between β-Amy-A2 and Kr2 is estimated at 97.5 cM. A comparison of the cytological map drawn by the present deletion analysis with the genetic map based on the recombination values indicates that recombination is restricted to the proximal region of chromosome 5A.Key words: Triticum aestivum, gametocidal genes, cytological map, genetic map, deletion mapping.

Abstract:
The genotype at the Q locus on chromosome 5A of Triticum durum Desf. (2n = 28, AABB), a species with keeled glumes and tough rachis, was studied by either crossing the species with, or substituting its 5A into, a hexaploid common wheat, T. aestivum (L.)Thell. ssp. vulgare (Vill.) MK. cv. Chinese Spring (2n = 42, AABBDD, QQ genotype). Contrary to the opinion of previous researchers that keeled-glumed wheats always have the spelta gene, q, the durum strains studied had a hypermorphic allele, the vulgare gene, Q. No speltoid plants appeared in the progeny of the crosses, and disomic substitution lines (2n = 2) had squareheaded (= vulgare type) spikes. Also, three doses of the long arm of 5A of durum produced compactoidy. Apparently, Q does not produce round glumes in the genetic backgrounds of most tetraploids except T. carthlicum Nevski. The phenotype conditioned by Q, which is evidently present in all free-threshing tetraploid wheats, is somewhat different at the tetraploid level from that in hexaploids. The presence of Q tends to magnify the differences in the degree of expression of certain minor characters.Key words: Triticum, phylogeny, vulgare gene, pleiotropic gene, dosage effect, interaction.

Full text
Abstract:
In an attempt to find new sources of resistance to the disease septoria tritici blotch (STB) of wheat, we have evaluated a worldwide collection of the diploid species Triticum tauschii for their reaction to infection by pycnidiospores of Mycosphaerella graminicola, the pathogen causing this disease. We have also screened a selection of synthetic hexaploid wheats, produced by hybridizing T. tauschii with tetraploid wheats, as well as the first and second generations of hybrids between some of these synthetics and commercial wheats. Almost 90% of the T. tauschii accessions and two-thirds of the synthetic hexaploids were resistant to STB. In the intercrosses with susceptible commercial wheats (e.g. Egret), the STB resistance was effectively transmitted as a single dominant gene, as indicated by a 3:l ratio of resistant: susceptible plants in F2 progenies. In crosses with the STB-resistant wheat, M1696, a 15:l ratio in F2 progenies indicated that the two resistance genes were different. F2 progenies involving the wheat cultivar Teal were more ambivalent. Other genetic traits also segregated in these plants although not all showed easily distinguishable phenotypic differences. Non-beneficial characters included genes for height, hybrid necrosis, grass clump dwarfism, tenacious glumes or threshability, speltoid head shape, and dark seed colour. Other genes controlled the more neutral characters coleoptile colour, hairy glumes and glume colour. Beneficial genes include resistance to septoria tritici blotch.

Abstract:

Frandsen, Filip. "The Impact of Visual Properties on Player Habits and Game Sessions." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för speldesign, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-326119.

Abstract:
This paper aims to provide a foundation in regard to information and cause correlation for future research about player retention and game session times based on visual properties. (such as colour values) This study can later be applied within software development. An online quantitative survey about play sessions and player habits is conducted and the conduct of this research is aimed at helping art directors make conscious and deliberate choices about the art styles for products where the visuals may impact player retention and game sessions. By knowing how visual elements such as colour values, shapes and contrast impact game play intensity and player engagement, and ultimately the end time spent during play sessions, art directors can make informed decisions to help impact player behaviours and habits. The paper includes subjects such as colour effects on humans (mental and physical), how human eye sight functions and how this should affect designs, effective use of visuals, eye fatigue, and visual communication. This study of visual properties and play sessions concludes that visuals have a definitive impact on how the game is perceived and processed by the player, leading to situations where the same mechanics can be much more intensive if presented using specific forms of visuals.
