New Zealand has incorporated ideas of vulnerability within its law of negligence for some years. It has not, however, clarified what is meant by vulnerability or the role the concept plays within the broader duty of care framework. Several obiter comments in Body Corporate No 207624 v North Shore City Council (Spencer on Byron) suggest the concept ought not to be part of the law due to its uncertain and confusing nature. Subsequent cases have, however, continued to use the concept, and continue to use it despite both its historically ill-defined nature and the additional uncertainty added by S

Bounded-size rules (BSRs) are dynamic random graph processes which incorporate limited choice along with randomness in the evolution of the system. Typically one starts with the empty graph and at each stage two edges are chosen uniformly at random. One of the two edges is then placed into the system according to a decision rule based on the sizes of the components containing the four vertices. For bounded-size rules, all components of size greater than some fixed K ≥ 1 are accorded the same treatment. Writing BSR(t) for the state of the system with ⌊nt/2⌋ edges, Spencer and Wormald [26] prove

Abstract Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has been shown to produce profound results in the treatment of certain hematologic malignancies, however treatment of solid tumors with CAR T cells has not been as successful. Studies have suggested that T-cell exhaustion plays a role in limiting the ability of CAR T cells to eradicate solid tumors. Additionally, stem-like qualities of T cells have been associated with better outcomes in patients treated with cellular therapies, including CAR T cells. Therefore, maintaining stem-like qualities and overcoming T-cell exhaustion may be key t

By recapitulating the essential steps that occur during embryonic organ development, we could generate in vitro human colonic organoids (HCOs) (Munera et al, Cell Stem Cell. 2017) and human intestinal organoids (HIOs) (Spence et al, Nature. 2011) from iPSCs. Interestingly, HCOs contain both epithelial and surrounding mesenchymal derivatives, including myofibroblasts and tissue-resident immune cells. There is then an obvious benefit to any innovation that increases the throughput of sample processing without unacceptable degradation in data quality. DCE-MRI has a sensitivity of 80-90% but a low specificity of 37-97% when assessing complete response (CR). Although alternative methods to assess CR have been attempted, such as biopsies, no highly accurate method has been identified. A form of evolutionism that envisioned a cosmological order based upon strength was transformed into a component of power politics in Republican China, despite unsuccessful political endeavors that illustrated both the triumphs and social malfunctions of evolutionary ideas. From the late 1910s, a new variety of social Darwinism arose alongside the scientific one, reflecting

Interannual variation in recruitment is the most important source of biological variability facing fisheries managers. Because most variation in recruitment occurs during early, mainly planktonic stages, recruitment fisheries oceanography usually integrates studies of plankton and physical oceanography.
