Abstract:
Four isolated occurrences of Tertiary volcanic rocks in the northern Spessart at Beilstein, Hoher Berg, Madstein and Kasselgrund are relics of volcanic vents or dikes. They display alkaline basalts (s. l.) with mainly trachybasaltic composition, which, from normative mineral contents, may be designated as nepheline-bearing alkali-olivine basalts and basanites. In part, centimetre-sized xenoliths of spinel lherzolite occur. According to Ar-Ar dating, the alkaline basalts (s. l.) from Kasselgrund have erupted at 18.1 ± 0.3 or 19.3 ± 0.4 Ma, those of Hoher Berg between c. 18 and c. 21 Ma. These ages correspond to the Vogelsberg eruption stage I. A slightly younger Ar-Ar age of 16.8 ± 0.3 Ma was recorded for the Beilstein basalt, which is in chronological accordance to the turn of Vogelsberg eruption stages II and III. Samples of all four occurrences reveal major and trace element compositions, which are different from those of the Vogelsberg basalts. Compositions of basalts of the stage III from Vogelsberg coincide most with the Spessart basalts. This signals a special position of the northern Spessart volcanic rocks either as a discrete spatial part of the Vogelsberg volcanic suite or as smaller, independent eruption centres.

Abstract:
AbstractPost-Variscan vein-type Co-Ni-Bi ores of the Bieber deposit, Spessart mountains, Germany, which are related to the Permian Kupferschiefer, have been investigated by ore microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and electron-probe microanalysis. The samples contain a variety of ore minerals, notably skutterudite, native bismuth, cobaltite, alloclasite, niccolite, maucherite, gersdorffite, rammelsbergite/pararammelsbergite, safflorite, loellingite and emplectite. The ores display structures indicative of multiple brecciation and complex zoned arsenide assemblages. Three sequential stages of deposition are identified, which are (1) the Cu stage, (2) the main Co-Ni-Bi stage, and (3) the late stage. The arsenide minerals, notably skutterudite, diarsenides and sulpharsenides, show a large range of compositional variation in Co-Ni-Fe space. A relatively limited number of skutterudite and diarsenide compositions lie outside the compositional fields established in the literature. Skutterudite and diarsenides are characterized by a significant substitution of As by S up to 0.44 a.p.f.u. and 0.31 a.p.f.u., respectively, which is larger than the range previously reported for these minerals. Sulpharsenide compositions can be grouped into three populations, which conform to cobaltian arsenopyrite, cobaltite and gersdorffite. They display highly variable As/S ratios between 0.95:1.00 and 1.29:0.73, consistent with experimental data. Estimates of the formation temperatures, based on the presence of dendritic native bismuth and emplectite, are in the range 100–300°C, similar to different post-Variscan mineralization styles widespread in Central Europe. Comparison of the Co-Ni-Bi vein assemblage with the framework of available paragenetic information and radiometric age data for regional mineralization events indicates an age of mineralization of ~150–160 Ma for the Bieber deposit.

Abstract:
The rapid decline of German emigration before World War I constitutes a puzzle that traditional explanations have difficulty in solving. The article shows that the social legislation implemented by Bismarck during the 1880s—the most developed at the time—played a key role in this process. Indeed, candidates for migration considered not only the gap between “direct wages” (labor earnings) in the United States and Germany, but also the differential in “indirect wages,” that is, social benefits. In that way, Bismarck's insurance system partly offset low wage rates in Germany and furthered the fall of the emigration rate.O sprecht! warum zogt ihr von dannen? Ferdinand Freiligrath1

Abstract:
AbstractAllozyme electrophoresis of 14 loci provided information on the distribution of the two central European subspecies of the fire salamander, Salamandra salamandra salamandra (dotted taxon) and S.s.terrestris (striped taxon), along an east-west-transect in Germany. 2183 larvae from 48 populations situated in 14 mountain ranges were studies. A broad (about 140 km wide) zone of intergradition between the two forms is described, ranging from the Hunsrück Mountains in the west to the Spessart in the east. Within this hybrid zone the populations are panmictic. Focussing on the Rhenish Slate Mountains, the western border of the hybrid zone is described in detail. A comparison between allozyme data and morphognostical data (drawn from literature) on the dorsal pattern indicates a discordance between the two data sets. Consequently, the dorsal pattern is ruled out as an indicator for the detection of hybrid populations.

Abstract:
Abstract Provenances originating from French and German sessile oak seed sources were analysed 23 years after planting at nine different locations in Northwest Germany. In general, German provenances are better adapted to the prevailing conditions of the test sites showing a better survival. Differences between the provenances in measured growth characters (“DBH”, “height”) were less pronounced than in observed quality parameters (“form”, “crown”). Five of the German provenances showed a better stem form; only three French provenances exceeded the overall mean. Variation in phenotypic stability between provenances could be observed as well as rank changes of provenances measured at different ages. Observed variation in stability was mainly attributable to single provenances, however, no pattern of variation could be detected. Besides the German seed sources “Bundesgebiet”, “Spessart” and “Göhrde” some French provenances (“Reno Valdieu”, “Bertranges”, “Darney” and “Der”) can be recommended as substitute in low crop years.

Abstract:
Aquatic ecosystems can be either permanently wet or be subject to seasonal or intermittent drying. Insect species inhabiting temporally dry streams have evolved behavioural, morphological and/or life history traits to ensure their persistence. The limnephilid caddisfly Micropterna lateralis (Stephens 1837) has a life cycle that is tailored to the temporal dynamics of periodically dry streams where adults usually hatch before drought commences. Their aquatic larvae are, however, also able to survive stream drying, but the mechanisms driving this survival ability have not been studied to date. We conducted an experiment to simulate drying conditions, using samples from a M. laterialis population taken from an intermittent stream in the Spessart Mountains of the central German highlands. The experiment simulated three hydrological conditions: wet, moist and dry. In a first test of our system we compared gene expression profiles of three individuals (one per condition) using Illumina-based Massive Analysis of cDNA Ends MACE-Seq. Our first results show large differences in gene expression between the studied phases with many genes exhibiting gradual up- or down-regulation across the three experimental hydrological conditions. Under drought stress, up-regulation was primarily found in genes controlling production and mobilization of desiccation protectants, mainly sugars, whereas down-regulated genes were related to cuticle organisation and lipid metabolism. These preliminary results give valuable insights into genetic and physiological responses of aquatic insects to stream drying.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. The reversal of freshwater acidification in the low mountain ranges of Germany is of public, political and scientific concern, because these regions are near natural ecosystems and function as an important drinking water supply. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status and trends of acidification reversal after two decades of reduced anthropogenic deposition in selected freshwaters of the low mountain ranges in the Harz, the Fichtelgebirge, the Bavarian Forest, the Spessart and the Black Forest. In response to decreased sulphate deposition, seven out of nine streams investigated had significantly decreasing sulphate concentrations (all trends were calculated with the Seasonal Kendall Test). The decrease in sulphate concentration was only minor, however, due to the release of previously stored soil sulphur. No increase was found in pH and acid neutralising capacity (defined by Reuss and Johnson, 1986). Aluminum concentrations in the streams did not decrease. Thus, no major acidification reversal can currently be noted in spite of two decades of decreased acid deposition. Nevertheless, the first signs of improvement in water quality were detected as there was a decrease in the level and frequency of extreme values of pH, acid neutralising capacity and aluminium concentrations in streams. With respect to nitrogen, no change was determined for either nitrate or ammonium concentrations in precipitation or stream water. Base cation fluxes indicate increasing net loss of base cations from all ecosystems investigated, which could be interpreted as an increase in soil acidification. The latter was due to a combination of continued high anion leaching and significant reduction of base cation deposition. No major improvement was noted in biological recovery, however, initial signs of recovery were detectable as there was re-occurrence of some single macroinvertebrate species which were formerly extinct. The results of this study have important implications for water authorities, forest managers and policy makers: the delay in acidification reversal suggests a need for ongoing intensive amelioration of waters, a careful selection of management tools to guarantee sustainable management of forests and the reduction of nitrogen deposition to prevent further acidification of soils and waters. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
