Sphalerite is an abundant mineral in the hydrothermal deposits from the Baia Mare and Oaș areas (northwestern Romania). Sphalerite samples were analyzed with an electron probe microanalyzer and Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results indicated different amounts of Fe in the various deposits from the Baia Mare and Oaș areas. The sphalerites from Baia Sprie, Cavnic, Iba, Turț Penigher, and Breiner have a low Fe wt.% content. High-resolution S L3,2-edge XANES spectra have been collected from a series of high-quality sphalerite samples. Each of the sphalerite samples examined has a characteristic iron concentration, and the range is from <0.01 to 14.79 wt% Fe. The structures of the S L3,2-edges are investigated by comparing ab initio calculated spectra with experimentally measured S L3,2-edge spectra collected from synthetic ZnS sphalerite. The theoretical and experimental data provide evidence that S 2p electron transitions to empty S 3s and S 3d states can occur across an energy range above the absorption edge.

The paper considers mineralogical and geochemical features of gold-sulfde mineralization of quartz veins in granites of the Katsbakh complex in the South Sukhtelya gold occurrence (South Urals). The sulfde content of quartz veins varies from 1 to 3 vol. %, rarely reaching 10 vol. %, and the average Au content is 5–10 g/t. In this paper, chemical analysis of slag from abandoned medieval mine in Gornji Potočari, Srebrenica municipality was described. Total of 10 metals were analyzed: chromium, copper, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, zinc, silver, manganese, iron and lead. The complex black shale contained various sulphide minerals (alabandite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, violarite, chalcopyrite, pyrite). Concentrations of base metals in the ore were Fe 13.2%, Mn 0.97%, Ni 0.3%, Zn 0.57%, Cu 0.23% and Co 0.03%.
