Hayes, Richard. "Spheres on sphere silica particles : mechanism and modification." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2016. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3002456/.

Abstract:
One of the current challenges in chromatography is the fast separation of large biomolecules. The demand for this is huge in pharmaceutical and biological research. To meet this challenge a new type of porous, large pore support material is required. A new, unique type of silica support, named spheres on sphere (SOS) silica, has recently been discovered which may meet these demands. SOS particles are produced via a one-pot synthesis and are comprised of a nanoparticle shell surrounding a larger core microsphere. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns packed with such particles have shown remarkably fast separation of proteins. These new particles show high potential as a revolutionary HPLC technology compared to widely used core-shell silica particles, which are prepared by a tedious layer by layer procedure and suffer with the issue of poor mass transfer for large analytes. This thesis outlines the experimental work undertaken to develop SOS particles which are specifically designed for the separation of proteins and large molecules using HPLC. The synthesis method has been optimised to achieve particles with a complete, densely packed, single-layer shell and a diameter suitable for use in HPLC. Additionally, a narrow particle size distribution is achieved, removing the need for a time-consuming and wasteful classification process. The suitability of microwave irradiation for the surface functionalisation of silica materials has been investigated. This includes the development of a bonding method for SOS particles which is shown to be highly reproducible and capable of providing comparable bonding density to conventional reflux heating methods. The use of microwave heating also results in significantly shorter reaction times and lower power consumption compared to commonly used equipment such as hot plates or heating mantles. Following surface functionalisation, the performance of HPLC columns packed with SOS particles have been assessed in both isocratic and gradient elution mode. Parameters such as column permeability, total porosity and impedance have been determined in isocratic mode, which allows direct comparison with other column packing materials. In gradient elution mode the SOS columns have been used for the analysis and separation of a wide range of peptides and proteins. Excellent performance has been obtained using the SOS material where fast gradient analysis is applied, in some cases outperforming a commercial core-shell column specifically designed for protein analysis.

Some time ago, astronomers discovered a star with unusual brightness changes. The star is known as KIC 8462852, and is located in the constellation Cygnus. As a rule, slight and periodic changes in the brightness of a star is a normal process. Extinction of less than 1% says that the star passes the planet, which absorbs some of the light.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis introduces n-sphere clustering, a new method of cluster analysis, akin to agglomerative hierarchical clustering. It relies on expanding n-spheres around each observation until they intersect. It then clusters observations based on these intersects, the distance between the spheres, and density of observations. Currently, many commonly used clustering methods struggle when clusters have more complex shapes. The aim of n-sphere clustering is to have a method which functions reasonably well, regardless of the shape of the clusters. Accuracy is shown to be low, particularly when clusters overlap, and extremely sensitive to noise. The time complexity of the algorithm is prohibitively large for large datasets, further limiting its potential use.

Abstract:
The following thesis titled SPHERE OF INFLUENCE is about development. I discuss my efforts to develop as an artist addressing observation and awareness of the self and our surroundings. I will discuss how this relates to my approach with materials and process and will explain not only what the sculpture titled SPHERE OF INFLUENCE has come to represent for me, but also the reactions of viewers during the temporary installation of the SPHERE OF INFLUENCE at the Anderson Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University from May 5th 2006 through May 14th, 2006. I will explain the SPHERE OF INFLENCE'S function as both an object meant to evoke an awareness of what and who surrounds its space and as a metaphor of my efforts to surpass personal and artistic boundaries.

Alsaud, Huda Saleh. "Approximation on the complex sphere." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28368.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study approximation of multivariate functions on the complex sphere by spherical harmonic polynomials. Spherical harmonics arise naturally in many theoretical and practical applications. We consider different aspects of the approximation by spherical harmonic which play an important role in a wide range of topics. We study approximation on the spheres by spherical polynomials from the geometric point of view. In particular, we study and develop a generating function of Jacobi polynomials and its special cases which are of geometric nature and give a new representation for the left hand side of a well-known formulae for generating functions for Jacobi polynomials (of integer indices) in terms of associated Legendre functions. This representation arises as a consequence of the interpretation of projective spaces as quotient spaces of complex spheres. In addition, we develop new elements of harmonic analysis on the complex sphere, and use these to establish Jackson's and Kolmogorov's inequalities. We apply these results to get order sharp estimates for m-term approximation. The results obtained are a synthesis of new results on classical orthogonal polynomials geometric properties of Euclidean spaces. As another aspect of approximation, we consider interpolation by radial basis functions. In particular, we study interpolation on the spheres and its error estimate. We show that the improved error of convergence in n dimensional real sphere, given in [7], remain true in the case of the complex sphere.

Abstract:
The analysis of the ballast and dimension of the Judiciary while democratic instance and of how the opening of its access and the revision of its role can contribute to the exercise of democracy were the nodal points of the work evolved, which consolidates its theoretical basis on the theory of communicative action of Habermas, seeking to demonstrate, in a first attempt to experiment its categories to the praxis which results from the inter action of the Special Judiciaries with the Consumer´s Defense Code (Law 9099/95 and Law 8078/90), how they can perform as instruments of democracy in judicial public sphere. In the development of the subject we pose the process in such a manner as to reproduce the enormous differences and conflicts found out in social environment, and as a conductor of necessities and social expectations, also finding a peculiar form of society´s political participation through the Judiciary, argumentative stage for the reaching of agreements, which may express a result of a deliberative but not decisive nature. Also it was sought to demonstrate how process can be put into action so as to permit, within the scope of that institutionalized sphere, a greater effectiveness of fundamental rights, the equalization of syntonies which would permit a reduction of judicial inequalities inherent in social reality, operating the transformation of legal equality to material one, at the procedural level, and how, reflexively, this can reach concrete pan- prosecutional results. It was also noticed by the dynamics of the two micro-systems and their results the potential capacity of propitiating the affectiveness of alterity sentiment, albeit tenuous, of those auto-referential subsystems referred to by Habermas, which oppose society as supreme forces of domination in present days. It was also sought to unveil a new interaction among the Judiciary, democracy and social participation, mainly as collectivized individualities, which might potentialize the resistances and create short cuts to the accomplishment of the values which permeate the contexture of their longing for equality and dignity. In a disbelieving world crowded with complexities and multiple problems, which, more and more, globally affect the destinies and the remotest realities, any path leading to reflection and criticism, even through the re-reading of a Power of State, creates, itself, a finality, by putting on the stage a public discussion of the legitimate expectations of society.

Persson, Gulda Maria Christina Margareta. "Defects in Hard-Sphere Colloidal Crystals." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10695.

Full text
Abstract:
Colloidal crystals of \(1.55 \mu m\) diameter silica particles were grown on {100} and flat templates by sedimentation and centrifugation. The particles interact as hard spheres. The vacancies and divacancies in these crystals are not in equilibrium, since no movement of single vacancies is observed. The lack of mobility is consistent with the extrapolation of earlier simulations at lower densities. The volume of relaxation of the vacancy has a plausible value for these densities as the volume of formation is approaching the volume in a close-packed crystal. The volume of relaxation for the divacancy is smaller than that of two vacancies, so that the association of two vacancies into a divacancy requires extra volume, and hence extra entropy. The mean square displacement of the nearest neighbors of the vacancies is an order of magnitude larger than that of the nearest neighbors of particles. The mobility of the divacancies is consistent with the extrapolation of older simulations and is similar to that associated with the annihilation of the vacancy-interstitial pair. The volume of motion of the divacancies is \(\Delta V_m = 0.19V_o (V_o\): close-packed volume) and the entropy of motion is \(\Delta S_m = 0.49k_BT\). Dislocation-twin boundary interactions can be observed by introducing strain via a misfit template. The dislocations formed are Shockley partials. When a dislocation goes through the boundary, two more dislocations are created: a reflected dislocation and one left at the boundary, both with the same magnitude Burgers vector. The dislocations relieve a total of about a third of the misfit strain. The remaining strain is sufficiently large to move the dislocation up to the boundary and close to sufficient to move the dislocation through the boundary. A small amount to extra strain energy is needed to cause nucleation of the two additional dislocations after a waiting time.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss a conjectured classification concerning the index of non-totally geodesic minimal hypersurfaces of the n-dimensional standard sphere of radius one S^n. We briefly discuss the basic theory of minimal submanifolds before turning our attention to minimal submanifolds and hypersurfaces in S^n. We present some results of Simons which show that any minimal submanifold of S^n is unstable, and how the totally geodesic S^k ⊂ S^n are characterized by their index. We then present a related conjecture which claims that the Clifford hypersurfaces are also characterized by their index in a similar way, discuss the most recent developments related to the conjecture, and give Urbano’s proof of the conjecture for the special case when n = 3

We use video microscopy and particle tracking to study the diffusion of both colloidal spheres and polymers in slit microchannels. The molecules are allowed to sample the entire height of the microchannel. We find that the sphere data agrees well with a gap-averaged Oseen linear superposition approximation even at very high confinement whereas polymer chains at high confinement can not be modeled by this far field approach. We find that the polymer chain dynamics at high confinement can be explained well by a blob model scaling.

Abstract:
To mitigate the effects of non-recurrent congestion on the United Kingdom motorway and trunk road network, the Highways Agency (HA) has developed the Incident Support Unit (ISU) service. This research presents a review of incident management practice in the United Kingdom, in particular on the M25 London Orbital Motorway. An international comparison between British incident management operations and those in the United States is also provided. The ISU service on the M25 motorway, operated by the HA’s service provider, Carillion plc, is critically examined, including quantitative and qualitative examinations and a benefit-cost estimation. To understand fully the influence that ISUs have on the M25 road network motorway, incident data was collected and analysed. These incidents have been examined to determine their influence on traffic flow. Specifically, their impact on the capacity of the roadway and the effect of “rubbernecking” is investigated. Investigations and analysis are undertaken to evaluate the delays experienced by motorway users due to incidents. The effectiveness of motorway matrix signals and signs are then examined including compliance rates with mandatory signals and the impact of variable message signs on driver route choice. Finally, the optimal standby locations of ISUs on the M25 sphere road network are established in order to reduce their response times to incidents.

Abstract:
In this Bachelor’s thesis the following question is answered: Does the inequality posed in the article Klyachko et al [2008] cover the real part of the Bloch surface of a 3D quantum system when used as in Kochen and Specker [1967]? The Klyachko inequality relies on using five measurements to show contextuality of a subset of states on the real part of the Bloch surface. These can now be used in several configurations as present in the Kochen-Specker contextuality proof, by simply rotating the measurements. We show here that these new inequalities will have subsets of violation that eventually cover the entire real part of the Bloch surface. This can be extended to show that all states of a spin 1 system are non-contextual, so that we have recovered a state-independent contextuality proof by using the Klyachko inequality several times. In the final part, an interpretation of this is given and also some recommendations for further research that should be done in the field.

Antypov, Dmytro. "Computer simulation of rod-sphere mixtures." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2003. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/19281/.

Full text
Abstract:
Results are presented from a series of simulations undertaken to investigate the effect of adding small spherical particles to a fluid of rods which would otherwise represent a liquid crystalline (LC) substance. Firstly, a bulk mixture of Hard Gaussian Overlap particles with an aspect ratio of 3:1 and hard spheres with diameters equal to the breadth of the rods is simulated at various sphere concentrations. Both mixing-demixing and isotropic-nematic transition are studied using Monte Carlo techniques. Secondly, the effect of adding Lennard-Jones particles to an LC system modelled using the well established Gay-Berne potential is investigated. These rod-sphere mixtures are simulated using both the original set of interaction parameters and a modified version of the rod-sphere potential proposed in this work. The subject of interest is the internal structure of the binary mixture and its dependence on density, temperature, concentration and various parameters characterising the in-termolecular interactions. Both the mixing-demixing behaviour and the transitions between the isotropic and any LC phases have been studied for four systems which differ in the interaction potential between unlike particles. A range of contrasting microphase separated structures including bicontinuous, cubic, and micelle-like arrangement have been observed in bulk. Thirdly, the four types of mixtures previously studied in bulk are subjected to a static magnetic field. A variety of novel phases are observed for the cases of positive and negative anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility. These include a lamellar structure, in which layers of rods are separated by layers of spheres, and a configuration with a self-assembling hexagonal array of spheres. Finally, two new models are presented to study liquid crystal mixtures in the presence of curved substrates. These are implemented for the cases of convex and concave spherical surfaces. The simulation results obtained in these geometries indicate segregation of spheres at the topological defect of the director field induced by the surface.

Walsh, Clare. "Gender, discourse and the public sphere." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2000. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/3155/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to develop an analytical framework that will combine the insights of critical discourse analysis and a range of feminist perspectives on discourse as social practice. This framework is then employed in an investigation of women's participation in a number of 'communities of practice('Eckert and McConnell-Ginet 1992) previously monopolised by men. Comparisons are also made with women's involvement in organisations where they are in a majority and where a feminist ethos prevails. I argue that women often find themselves at odds with the masculinist discursive norms that masquerade as gender-neutral professional norms. This, in turn, has implications for the way in which women are perceived and judged by others, as well as for the roles they are assigned within the public sphere. With reference to selective transcripts of in-depth structured interviews with women in each of the domains under investigation, I suggest that the complex negotiations in which they engage in order to manage contradictory expectations about how they should speak and behave cannot easily be accommodated within a dichotomous model of gendered linguistic styles. Nonetheless, this is precisely how their linguistic behaviour is often 'fixed' and evaluated by others, especially by the mass media. I make reference to a wide range of texts from a variety of media in order to illustrate the role the media, in particular, play in mediating the perception of women's involvement in the public sphere and in (re)producing normative gender ideologies. The first case study focuses on women Labour MPs in the House of Commons. It includes a detailed analysis of the media coverage of Margaret Beckett's bid for the Labour leadership in 1994. It also considers whether the record increase in the number of women MPs in the wake of the 1997 general election has helped to make the Government's policy priorities more woman-friendly and/or has changed the culture of the House. The second case study on women's involvement in devolved politics briefly considers their contribution to the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly, before focusing in detail on the contribution made by the Northern Irish Women's Coalition to framing the Good Friday Agreement and to the structures of the new Northern Irish Assembly. The third case study compares the structure and rhetoric of the London-based Women's Environmental Network and those of male dominated environmental groups, including Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace and the relative media coverage these groups receive. The final case study compares women's involvement in the Church of England as outsiders, campaigning for women to be admitted to priesthood, and as recently ordained insiders, whose subordination within Church structures is sanctioned by canon law. A central thesis of this study is that both the institutional constraints with which women have to negotiate and the stereotypical evaluations of their performance of public sphere roles have contributed to a process of discursive restructuring, whereby the gendered nature of the public/private dichotomy has been reproduced within the public sphere. However, women are not passively positioned in relation to the institutional and other discursive constraints that operate on them. I suggest that, they, in their turn, have helped to promote a counter tendency whereby the discursive boundaries between the traditional public and private spheres are becoming increasingly weakened and permeable. The study concludes by arguing for a more socially situated theory of language and gender to account for the constant tension that exists between the freedom of individuals to make choices within discourse and the normative practices that function to limit these choices.

Abstract:
The 1920s and 1930s were decades of momentous changes and expansion in the Hindi literary sphere In this period Hindi became an established public language in print, education and politics and struggled successfully to become the future national language of India. A market for Hindi literature was first created, journals provided venues for debate and literary expression as well as professional employment, genres and styles were explored in many new directions, and new voices emerged, importantly those of women writers. The nationalist movement, too, entered a new phase which emphasized popular publics and vernacular institutions. Through the concept of 'public sphere' as expounded by Jurgen Habermas and other political scientists, this thesis analyzes those changes at the levels of institutions, actors, discourses and, to a limited extent, of audiences in their proper context and in relation to each other. Chapter 2 explores changes in the literary sphere, both its expansion chiefly through the medium of journals, and its institutionalization through a linguistic and literary agenda in the education system. Chapter 3 analyzes historical debates and narratives in order to trace the consolidation and diffusion of a nationalist historical consciousness. Chapter 4 examines the development of women's journals and the space they provided for a critique of discrimination against women and their public access, and for the exploration of women's roles and emotionality. Chapter 5 focuses on the making of Hindi's claim to be the 'national language', the strategies employed and the exclusions operated in the process of its political affirmation. Chapter 6 explores the relationship between the literary and the political spheres focusing on the role of Hindi intellectuals and political leaders. The institutional authority gained in one sphere underwrote that gained in the other, it shall be argued, and gave credence to an official nationalism that does not reflect the complexity and variety of cultural imagination and literary practices in that period.

For the experimental study of the annular condensation in the concentric spheres the effect of vapour velocity was studied by forcing the vapour to flow in the area between two concentric spheres. In the free condensation experiments it is observed that at smaller diameters the heat flux and mean heat transfer coefficients for sphere is higher. In the free and forced condensation experiments increasing the velocity of vapour increases the mean heat transfer coefficient. At the experiments with annular condensation between the concentric spheres high mean heat transfer coefficient values have been obtained compared to the free and forced condansation over the surface of spheres experimental studies.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to analyse the public communication activities of Korean people from the Chason dynasty to the present day using the conceptual category of the public sphere theorised by Jurgen Habermas. It is mainly concerned with two fundamental issues: the issue of 'communication and democracy,' and that of 'communication and culture.' Emphasising tradition and culture as among the most significant elements in the consideration of communicative action and the public sphere in the Korean context, the thesis takes issue with the claims to universality in Habermas's theory. My argument is that Habermas's theory cannot easily be applied to non-Western societies unless there is sufficient consideration of their idiosyncratic traditions and cultures. To develop this argument, the thesis addresses the impact of Confucianism on speech acts in Korea and the extent of their difference from those in a Western context. In identifying 'silence' as a key term, the situation of women in Korean cultures is particularly pertinent. The second consideration is the question of political authoritarianism which is responsible for the repression of free expression of opinion in collusion with Confucianism. I have discovered that several kinds of public domains of communication have developed through Korean history, despite those two repressing mechanisms, Confucianism and political authoritarianism, public domains which I suggest are more appropriately called 'the public sphere' according to Habermas's terminology. It is meaningful to filter and interpret various communication activities across historical periods from within the analytic framework of the public sphere. In relation to modem Korea, the thesis focuses on the media-saturated public sphere and the current civil movements to demonstrate the dynamics between power and money and their impact on the democratisation process

Abstract:

Despite the abundance of structural data, we still cannot accurately predict the structural and energetic changes resulting from mutations at protein interfaces. The inadequacy of current computational approaches to the analysis and design of protein-protein interactions has hampered the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic agents. Given the importance of side-chain packing in specifying the stability of protein-protein interfaces and protein cores, it is essential to quantitatively understand (and predict) the side-chain dihedral angle distributions observed in proteins of known structure, for computational protein design to be successful.

Following upon the pioneering work of Ramachandran and colleagues on predicting the backbone dihedral angle (&phis; and ψ) distributions with hard sphere plus stereochemical constraints models, we first use an analysis of the τ angle dependence of the distribution of &phis;/ψ angle observed in proteins of known structure to show that steric constraints alone (i.e. without invoking any additional energetic contributions, such as hydrogen bonding) are sufficient to explain the backbone dihedral angle distributions.

We then employ a hard-sphere plus stereochemical constraints only model to comprehensively study (predict) the side-chain dihedral angle distributions of all non-charged amino acid (Val, Thr, Ser, Cys, Leu, Ile, Phe, Tyr, Trp, Met, Mse, Nle). Our results emphasize that, in many cases, modeling steric, local and stereochemical constraints alone can quantitatively describe side-chain conformational statistics.

In addition, we illustrate how our simple hard sphere models can be applied to rank pretein stabilities and binding affinities. This thesis work will not only lead to a fundamental understanding of protein-protein interactions, but also to the development of efficient computational methods to rationally design protein interfaces with tunable specificity and affinity, and numerous applications in biomedicine.

Aherne, Mary. "The creative writer in the public sphere." Thesis, University of Hull, 2013. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:10104.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an analysis of the creative writer in contemporary Britain, using both literary and cultural theory to define and understand the roles available to the writer. It explores how these roles are interpreted by writers. The thesis offers new research and insights into the scope of current patronage practices, examines how the writer engages with these new roles, and assesses the potential impact on the writer, the reader and literature. Based on research conducted in the UK, this thesis focuses on four major contexts: the writer in residence, the prize culture, the literary festival, and the writer in the blogosphere. It considers how the writer’s role has been reconstructed in different social and cultural contexts. In addition, this study highlights writers’ perception of their public role and their position in society; the multiple and complex power relations inherent in these roles; the increasingly public presence of the writer; the reader-writer relationship, and the impact on the literature produced. Reflecting my own literary interests and practices, it focuses on the work and experiences of poets and novelists, rather than on those of dramatists and non-fiction writers. This study contributes to the as yet limited body of research into contemporary patronage practices. Furthermore, the thesis contributes to the historicising and theorisation of the creative writer which links the individual experience of writers with social and cultural structures and processes, making reference to the theories of Theodor Adorno, Roland Barthes, Pierre Bourdieu, Terry Eagleton and Jürgen Habermas. The research sheds light on the writer’s struggle to maintain a balance between gainful employment and creativity while negotiating the complex power relations that affect their literary output and their socio-cultural relations with patron and public.

Full text
Abstract:
This is an intellectual biography of Hans Morgenthau. Morgenthau was a German Jew who, in fleeing Nazi Germany, emigrated to the United States in the mid-1930s. He subsequently came to have an important impact upon the nascent discipline of International Relations in the United States in the immediate post-war period. His book Politics Among Nations was the first major textbook to be used in International Relations within American universities and through a number of editions it came to sell something like half a million copies. Morgenthau was also active as a public commentator on international politics and, in particular, American foreign policy and he became a prominent opponent of the Vietnam War in the 1960s and early 1970s. The central claim of this thesis is that Morgenthau's intellectual contributions and political activities can only be properly understood when set in the broader intellectual and political contexts both of Germany where he was educated and the United States where he spent the second half of his life.

In a modern world logistics has become one of the most necessary and import processes. The most obvious main tasks of which are delivery of goods, warehousing and meeting of customers’ needs. It is also very profitable activity, since all the procurement and production processes are based on the raw material transportation and timely delivery of components. However, the freshmen-students may not understand this because of the young age when they have to make such a difficult choice of a future probable career. Nowadays, the sphere of logistics is becoming even more popular and needed because of the on-going pandemic of COVID-19. Many businesses have failed and many people have lost their jobs due to the unstable employment level, inflation and worldwide economic crisis. That is why knowing of any future perspectives in the chosen sphere is extremely significant.
