Abstract Understanding spheroidal graphite growth in cast irons is a long standing problem for which several mechanisms have been proposed. During the last decade, observations using transmission electron microscopy added new information about the stacking of graphite layers, leading eventually to propose other mechanisms than previously thought of such as repeated 2D-nucleation of new growth blocks and their lateral extension at the surface of the spheroids. Furthermore, it has been recently realized that elements known to strongly affect graphite shape are also those that are surface active.

The degeneration of cartilage in articular joints is a significant medical concern due to its high incidence rate. Damaged articular cartilage has a limited ability to regenerate naturally and thus often requires regenerative therapy. Intra-articular matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte transplantation, which involves the introduction of chondrocytes into the damaged area either as part of tissue-engineered constructs with a carrier matrix (scaffold) or in the form of tissue spheroids (chondrospheres), is generally considered the gold standard for treating such defects. This approach is pr

Abstract:
Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids (HDLS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that is caused by colony stimulating factor 1 receptor gene mutation degenerating the cerebral white matter. It is characterized by various symptoms such as progressive cognitive decline, personality changes, and motor disorders. Since these clinical features are not consistent, HDLS is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed. This case report presents a patient priorly diagnosed with cerebral infarction by clinical features, but eventually with HDLS by a genetic test.

Abstract:
Peripherin, a neuronal intermediate filament (nIF) protein found associated with pathological aggregates in motor neurons of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and of transgenic mice overexpressing mutant superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1G37R), induces the selective degeneration of motor neurons when overexpressed in transgenic mice. Mouse peripherin is unique compared with other nIF proteins in that three peripherin isoforms are generated by alternative splicing. Here, the properties of the peripherin splice variants Per 58, Per 56, and Per 61 have been investigated in transfected c

Peripherin, a neuronal intermediate filament protein associated with axonal spheroids in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), induces the selective degeneration of motor neurons when overexpressed in transgenic mice. To further clarify the selectivity and mechanism of peripherin-induced neuronal death, we analyzed the effects of peripherin overexpression in primary neuronal cultures. Peripherin overexpression led to the formation of cytoplasmic protein aggregates and caused the death not only of motor neurons, but also of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons that were cultured from dissociated s

Abstract:
Lysosomal storage diseases are inherited and acquired disorders characterized by dysfunctional lysosomes. Intracytoplasmic accumulation of undegraded substrates leads to impaired cellular function and death. Several plant species are toxic to livestock because of the presence of indolizidine alkaloids, including swainsonine, which cause a storage disease. Swainsonine-induced nervous disease (i.e., locoism) of sheep and cattle is well recognized in several parts of the world, particularly in the western United States and in parts of Australia.
