Abstract:
By juxtaposing two ostensibly divergent characters, the Jewish art historian and Egyptologist Hedwig Fechheimer (1871–1942) and Soviet filmmaker and theorist Sergei Eisenstein (1898–1948), this paper investigates how both approaches folded time, creating Cubist chronologies. Fechheimer adapted the philological focus of her Berlin School contemporaries to create an ahistorical, anti-teleological grammar of ancient Egyptian art which espoused an artistic affinity between the Egyptians and the Cubist movement. Eisenstein, who held a copy of one of Fechheimer’s books in his personal library, took

Abstract: The Mummy and the Sphinx. Cinema as an interrogation in Lang and Bazin. Abstract André Bazin proposed an analogy between the plastic arts and the idea of the mummy, stating that the former would serve to exorcise the inexorable nature of time. Related to the mummy there is the Sphinx whose myth connects with Oedipus, the only one capable of answering to its interrogation. My hypothesis is to rethink the Bazinian proposal and try to prove that cinema is indeed ontologically real. However, I would like to clarify that its power ‒«the irrational power of photography»‒

This article examines Red Road as a melodrama and woman's film. It argues that the film is traductively real and melodramatic, and that conceiving the film in melodramatic terms is contrary to the way in which it has been defined in public discourses and academic analysis. Red Road is film melodrama in a number of related ways, via: tropes of narrative and character; a tendency to look back, work through and act out in a melancholy and melodramatic fashion; an emphasis on familialism and redemption; and the nomination of its central character as a woman and mother. Red Road is a maternal text

Materials and Methods.—Fine-needle aspiration cytology of 3 histologically proven SPHTNs was reviewed. Results.—Two girls and 1 boy (ages 11, 12, and 15 years) were affected. The cytologic diagn

Results: We found 9 calvarial cases and 5 spheno-orbital ones. The most common symptom in the calvarial cases was a lump in the scalp, and in the spheno-orbital lesions it was exophtalmos. Like Oedipus, Jong-su, with his hamartia of hubris, has the potential to become the hero of tragedy, as Aristotle describes it. However, Jong-su's hamartia, unlike Oedipus, is not an-agnorisis or peripeteia. Instead, by choosing to kill Ben, Jong-su fails to integrate into society and ends up

This introductory chapter provides an overview of film nor. This “genre without a name” tends to reflect the films themselves, which are often about seduction and mystery, Sphinx-like secrets and labyrinthine riddles. One response to this mystique has been a determined demystification on the part of certain super-skeptical critics, the doom-and-gloom school, as a way to counter the “seductive power of film noir.” The result has been a series of grim pronouncements about the nothingness of film noir: that is to say film noir is a “black hole” that “never existed” and can only be found in books.

Evaluation of accidental sodium leak, combustion, and its thermal consequence is one of the important issues to be assessed in the field of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) since the liquid sodium is chemically active and might give thermal load to plant building structure due to its exothermic reaction with oxygen in air atmosphere. Therefore, many experimental investigations and numerical simulation tools development have been and still now are being carried out to understand the details of sodium fire behaviors and to contribute to the investigation and preparation of appropriate mitigation
