Abstract:
By juxtaposing two ostensibly divergent characters, the Jewish art historian and Egyptologist Hedwig Fechheimer (1871–1942) and Soviet filmmaker and theorist Sergei Eisenstein (1898–1948), this paper investigates how both approaches folded time, creating Cubist chronologies. Fechheimer adapted the philological focus of her Berlin School contemporaries to create an ahistorical, anti-teleological grammar of ancient Egyptian art which espoused an artistic affinity between the Egyptians and the Cubist movement. Eisenstein, who held a copy of one of Fechheimer’s books in his personal library, took

Abstract: The Mummy and the Sphinx. Cinema as an interrogation in Lang and Bazin. Abstract André Bazin proposed an analogy between the plastic arts and the idea of the mummy, stating that the former would serve to exorcise the inexorable nature of time. Related to the mummy there is the Sphinx whose myth connects with Oedipus, the only one capable of answering to its interrogation. My hypothesis is to rethink the Bazinian proposal and try to prove that cinema is indeed ontologically real. However, I would like to clarify that its power ‒«the irrational power of photography»‒

Abstract:
This article examines Red Road as a melodrama and woman's film. It argues that the film is traductively real and melodramatic, and that conceiving the film in melodramatic terms is contrary to the way in which it has been defined in public discourses and academic analysis. Red Road is film melodrama in a number of related ways, via: tropes of narrative and character; a tendency to look back, work through and act out in a melancholy and melodramatic fashion; an emphasis on familialism and redemption; and the nomination of its central character as a woman and mother. Red Road is a maternal text

This paper suggests that the opacity of <Burning> is due to the flaw(hamartia) that the protagonist Jong-su possesses, which acts like a filter blocking his relationship with the world. Like Oedipus, Jong-su, with his hamartia of hubris, has the potential to become the hero of tragedy, as Aristotle describes it. However, Jong-su's hamartia, unlike Oedipus, is not an-agnorisis or peripeteia. Instead, by choosing to kill Ben, Jong-su fails to integrate into society and ends up

Embrace ambience! Invoking Benjamin’s spirit, this article does not seek to limit understanding through restriction to a particular theme or theoretical construct (Buck-Morss 253). Instead, it offers snapshots of interactions at the dawn of the postmodern city. That bricolage also engages how people appropriate, manipulate, disrupt and divert urban spaces and strategies of power in their everyday life.
