Abstract:
Recently, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Sphynx cats has been associated with a variant in the gene encoding Alström syndrome protein 1 (ALMS1). The primary aims of this study were to describe the prevalence of HCM in Sphynx cats in New Zealand, and to assess the association between HCM and the ALMS1 variant in this population. In this prospective study, 55 apparently healthy Sphynx cats from registered Sphynx breeders and pet owners in New Zealand were screened by a cardiologist. A total of 42 of these cats had a repeat cardiac examination after median 1.8 years (range: 1.6–2.2). The fr

ABSTRACT Since the early 1990s, a number of deaths of Sphynx cats have been anecdotally reported following ketamine-based anesthesia. These episodes have raised concerns, between breeders and owners of that peculiar cat breed, that their cats may not be looked after with the care they deserve and that veterinarians might not be adequately informed about breed-specific drug toxicities. This article reviews some aspects of the clinical pharmacology of ketamine, which, in these authors’ opinion, analyzed together with the breed-specific peculiarities of Sphynx cats, may provide some explanations

Abstract:
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common heart disease in cats with a suspected genetic origin. Previous studies have identified five HCM-associated variants in three genes (Myosin binding protein C3: MYBPC3 p.A31P, p.A74T, p.R820W; Myosin heavy chain 7: MYH7 p.E1883K; Alstrom syndrome protein 1: ALMS1 p.G3376R). These variants are considered breed-specific, with the exception of MYBPC3 p.A74T, and have rarely been found in other breeds. However, genetic studies on HCM-associated variants across breeds are still insufficient because of population and breed bias caused by difference

Case series summary Cutaneous mastocytosis is a disorder rarely reported in veterinary dermatology and usually described as ‘urticaria pigmentosa’. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of 13 affected cats, selected from the files of a private referral dermatology practice within a period of 14 years. Breeds of the affected individuals included Sphynx (n = 9), Devon Rex (n = 2) and Sphynx/Devon Rex crossbreeds (n = 2). Females (n = 9) were over-represented and the median duration of clinical signs prior to diagnosis was 8 months. The clinical presentation of these 1

Abstract:
Rosario Faraudo writes about the Mexican decadent painter Julio Ruelas and the Catalonian prose writer and poet “Victor Catalá” really named Caterina Albert. Since women have repeatedly been related to Nature, it may not be a coincidence that the natural world in Ruelas is barren. He very frequently uses hybridization in relation to feminity, which links him to the general attitude of his time; sphynx, sirens, serpents, cats and vampires abound in late XIX century European art. Catalá uses a similar narrative strategy in defining some of her characters, yet with a different orientation.

Abstract The restoration of the sculptures of Antinous, the faun, the sphinx, Acteon, and Venus, referred to in passing in the correspondence cited in the previous chapter, reminds us that in the modernity of the later 18th century, few ancient marbles were excavated intact and in pristine condition: what Hamilton refers to on one occasion as ‘preserved as when … come from the hands’ of the ancient sculptor. The restoration of ancient sculptures in 18th-century Rome has come to be seen as a highly controversial material and theoretical practice. Thanks largely to the pioneering research of the
