Abstract:
The present research work consists of the development of a business project, that gets the name of ""PIKAY- Salsas Gourmet"", which is a spicy sauce made of passion fruit and Charapita pepper. Therefore, it shows there is little knowlegde that exists in the current market about sauces made from native products of our jungle. The target market that wishes to experiment and taste new flavours in their meals, snacks, among others, do not usually find a variety of different sauces. However, the markets, points of purchase and fairs do not have this type of products to offer to the public on a massive scale. That is the reason why a lot of customers are dissastified, due to the lack of sauces with exotic flavours in the market. To execute this project, interviews, polls, participation in fairs, points of purchase and social networks were developed. Adittionally, an arduous investigation was done about the food industry, and it considers the key resources related to the business to carry out this project..<br>Trabajo de investigación

Fraser, Geoffrey Alan. "Nonradial oscillations in Spica." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24667.

Full text
Abstract:
The absorption line profiles of Spica (α Virginis, HD116658, B1.5IV, m=0.97) show features, at about the 1% level, moving from the blue wavelengths towards the red wavelengths. A series of spectra were taken, at the 1.22 m telescope at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory on three nights in April, 1982 and two nights in April, 1984, to study these moving features. As Spica is a member of a binary system, the effect of the secondary had to be removed from the observations. This was done by subtracting a template spectrum which had been scaled, broadened and shifted to match the secondary, from each observation. The required shifts were determined using the orbital elements on blended nights and using the Fahlman-Glaspy small-shifts technique on unblended nights. An average of all the spectra was then subtracted from each observation. The resulting series of residuals clearly show the motion of the features seen in the line profiles. The acceleration of the features was estimated to be between 0.0055 and 0.0068 kms⁻². Assuming the features are due to nonradial oscillations, this acceleration corresponds to waves moving slowly, about 5 to 20 kms⁻¹, in a prograde direction. The angular frequency of the oscillations, after accounting for the effects of rotation, would be about 3.4X10⁻⁵ rads⁻¹. A computer model that produces line profiles, under the assumption of a single nonradial oscillation, was used to produce profiles for comparison with observations. Using an [formula omitted]=8 and m=-8 mode, an intrinsic frequency of 3.4X10⁻⁵ rads⁻¹ and a stellar rotation rate of 190 kms⁻¹, the model produced profiles similar to those observed. The change in the model profiles with time was also similar to that observed.<br>Science, Faculty of<br>Physics and Astronomy, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] In this thesis I investigated the ingestive and digestive morphology and digestive physiology during development of phyllosomata of the ornate spiny lobster, Panulirus ornatus. This knowledge was applied to develop a suitable formulated diet to be fed in combination with Artemia or used as a supplement to reduce production costs. The major impediment to closure of the life cycle of spiny lobsters has been an inadequate dietary regime, stemming from a lack of information on their feeding biology and ingestive and digestive capabilities. Of all spiny lobster species, P. ornatus is the best candidate for aquaculture in Australia having the shortest larval development phase (46 months) and fast growth rate, attaining 1 kg within 2 years of hatch. Currently, Artemia and fresh feeds such as mussel are used routinely as hatchery feeds. However, the development of a formulated diet that is palatable and delivers the correct balance of nutrients is seen as a highly attractive and cost effective alternative. An appropriate formulated diet for aquaculture of phyllosomata of spiny lobsters can be developed more effectively when the ingestive and digestive morphology, physiology and feeding behaviour are fully understood. ... Partial replacement trials revealed that P. ornatus phyllosoma are stimulated to feed by visual cues. Furthermore, 75% of the entire Artemia ration can be replaced with a formulated diet without having any adverse effects on survival and growth of early-stage phyllosomata. Weaning P. ornatus phyllosomata onto 100% formulated diet during stages II-III resulted in reduced survival but demonstrated that diets containing 44-50% crude protein with a diverse range of marine protein sources provides optimum survival and growth. This thesis has identified both physical and nutritional components that will contribute to the successful development of formulated diets for aquaculture of this species. Ultimately, although formulated diets are ingested and provide more than adequate survival when fed in combination with Artemia during early ontogeny, greater success and the possibility of totally replacing Artemia may occur after day 32 (stage IV) due to an increased efficiency to capture and manipulate larger sized particles externally and a greater capacity to triturate prey and sort and filter particles internally. Furthermore, a general increase in specific activity of digestive enzymes at stage IV suggests the possibility of a greater capacity to digest and assimilate nutrients.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, we explore some aspects of semiclassical type IIB string theory on AdS3 x S1 and on pure AdS3 in the limit of large angular momentum S. We first focus on the integrability technique known as finite-gap formalism for strings in AdS3 x S1, leading to the definition of a hyperelliptic Riemann surface, the spectral curve, which encodes, albeit in a rather implicit fashion, the semiclassical spectrum of a very large family of string solutions. Then, we show that, in the large angular momentum limit, the spectral curve separates into two distinct surfaces, allowing the derivation of an explicit expression for the spectrum, which is correspondingly characterised by two separate branches. The latter may be interpreted in terms of two kinds of spikes appearing on the strings: 'large' spikes, yielding an infinite contribution to the energy and angular momentum of the string, and 'small' spikes, representing finite excitations over the background of the 'large' spikes. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, strings moving in AdS3 x S1 should be dual to single trace operators in the sl(2) sector of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory. The corresponding one-loop spectrum in perturbation theory may also be computed through integrability methods and, in the large conformal spin limit S → ∞ (equivalent to the AdS3 angular momentum in string theory) is also expressed in terms of a spectral curve and characterised in terms of the so-called holes. We show that, with the appropriate identifications and with the usual extrapolation from weak to strong 't Hooft coupling described by the cusp anomalous dimension, the large-S spectra of gauge theory and of string theory coincide. Furthermore, we explain how 'small' and 'large' holes may be identified with 'small' and 'large' spikes. Finally, we discuss several explicit spiky string solutions in AdS3 which, at the leading semiclassical order, display the previously studied finite-gap spectrum. We compute the spectral curves of these strings in the large S limit, finding that they correspond to specific regions of the moduli space of the finite-gap curves. We also explain how 'large' spikes may be used in order to extract a discrete system of degrees of freedom from string theory, which can then be matched with the degrees of freedom of the dual gauge theory operators, and how 'small' spikes are in fact very similar to the Giant Magnons living in R x S2.

Abstract:
This present thesis seeks to define the precise grammar of the Spice circuit description language. Spice is the de facto standard for circuit analysis programs. Its lack of clear definition leads to incompatibility between the programs that nominally can share files.<br>Taking the early 2G6 dialect of Spice as its basic form, a Backus-Naur grammar of the language is developed from the informal published descriptions of the language. Since published descriptions are unclear, reference is made to the Berkeley Spice parser (the Fortran source code of this parser is available). Spice is in widespread use, but there is no formal definition of any of its 30-40 documented dialects and variations. Consequently, there are many ambiguities and contradictions at the lexical as well as syntactic levels.<br>Major issues in this thesis include lexical disambiguation and precise syntactic definition. A parser is also developed concurrently with the language definition, using the LEX and YACC compiler writing tools. The long-term objective is to establish a reference standard against which deviations of the individual dialects can be measured, and to provide easily used translation tools for conversion between dialects.

Abstract:

"SPICE Modeling of TeraHertz Heterojunction bipolar transistors." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014BORD0281/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of BiCMOS technology is to combine two different process technologies intoa single chip, reducing the number of external components and optimizing power consumptionfor RF, analog and digital parts in one single package. Given the respectivestrengths of HBT and CMOS devices, especially high speed applications benefit fromadvanced BiCMOS processes, that integrate two different technologies. For analog mixed-signal RF and microwave circuitry, the push towards lower powerand higher speed imposes requirements and presents challenges not faced by digitalcircuit designs. Accurate compact device models, predicting device behaviour undera variety of bias as well as ambient temperatures, are crucial for the development oflarge scale circuits and create advanced designs with first-pass success. As technology advances, these models have to cover an increasing number of physicaleffects and model equations have to be continuously re-evaluated and adapted. Likewiseprocess scaling has to be verified and reflected by scaling laws, which are closelyrelated to device physics. This thesis examines the suitability of the model formulation for applicability to production-ready SiGe HBT processes. A derivation of the most recent model formulationimplemented in HICUM version L2.3x, is followed by simulation studies, whichconfirm their agreement with electrical characteristics of high-speed devices. Thefundamental geometry scaling laws, as implemented in the custom-developed modellibrary, are described in detail with a strong link to the specific device architecture. In order to correctly determine the respective model parameters, newly developed andexisting extraction routines have been exercised with recent HBT technology generationsand benchmarked by means of numerical device simulation, where applicable.Especially the extraction of extrinsic elements such as series resistances and parasiticcapacitances were improved along with the substrate network. The extraction steps and methods required to obtain a fully scalable model library wereexercised and presented using measured data from a recent industry-leading 55nmSiGe BiCMOS process, reaching switching speeds in excess of 300GHz. Finally theextracted model card was verified for the respective technology

Kelly, Shane. "Marine reserves and the spiny lobster, Jasus edwardsii." Thesis, University of Auckland, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/995.

Full text
Abstract:
The impact of no-take marine reserves on spiny lobster, Jasus edwardsii, populations and the adjacent lobster fishery was assessed in a study that determined: the response of lobster populations to protection, if lobsters within marine reserves moved out into the surrounding fishery, examined the behavioural characteristic of lobsters that contributed to their recovery and spillover, and contrasted catch characteristics around a north-east New Zealand marine reserve with 2 unprotected sites. Surveys of 4 no-take marine reserves of different ages and 4 unprotected control sites confirmed that J. edwardsii increase in mean size and abundance within protected areas. Total lobster density was estimated to increase by 6.1% per year of protection. The relationship between age of reserve and the density of lobsters above the legal size limit (>100 mm carapace length) was complicated by depth related interactions between reserves, due to seasonal changes in the depth distribution of lobsters and differences in the timing of surveys among locations. However, density increases in legal sized lobsters were greater than those of the overall population. Mean size of protected lobsters increased in a non-linear fashion, reflecting the asymptotic growth characteristics of the species. Mean carapace length of lobsters increased by 11.24 mm after 3 years of protection and only by 16.25 mm after 2l years of protection. Corresponding increases in biomass (kg.500 m-2) and egg production (eggs.500 m-2) were estimated to be 7.4% and 6.6% respectively per year of protection. A tag recapture program indicated that the limited scale of movements and relatively high site fidelity of mature J. edwardsii aided the recovery of lobster populations in protected areas. Of 737 lobsters tagged in and around the Leigh Marine Reserve,212 were subsequently resighted. Seventy percent of resighted lobsters were relocated less than 250 m along the shore from their initial site after a mean period of liberty of 146 (se = 13.42) days. However, seasonal offshore movements took lobsters beyond the seaward boundary of the reserve where they were susceptible to capture. Of the 521 lobsters tagged on inshore reefs within the Leigh Marine Reserve. l.9% were caught over the seaward boundary by commercial fishers, and 14.4% of the 181 lobsters tagged over the seaward boundary were resighted on inshore reefs within the reserve. Movements into or out of the reserve across the longshore boundaries were also recorded for 7 out of the 27 lobsters moving further than 250 m along the shore. Acoustic tracking confirmed that J. edwardsii have a high site fidelity, with tracked lobsters spending a median of 84% of their time at their home site. Twenty one percent of the 26 lobsters fitted with acoustic tags never left their tagging site and, of those that did leave 56% eventually returned. Lobsters moved up to 3.1km away from their home sites but managed to find their way back after periods of 1 to 103 days away. Five lobsters had strong associations with two separate sites and made repeated movements between these alternate home sites. The straight line distance between alternate home sites ranged from 200 m to 1.3 km, and the period between visits to their primary or secondary home sites ranged from 1 to 93 days. Movement activity varied throughout the year, and seasonal patterns differed between males and females. Females displayed one peak in movement activity per year, around the time of larval release in September-October. Males displayed a summer peak centred on January, and a winter peak centred on July. The onset of high movement activity was often accompanied by a shift to deeper water and l0 of the 14 lobsters tracked for over 6 months spent periods away from the inshore reef system. Exposed groups of lobsters were observed aggregating in offshore areas of sand and low lying patch reef during the day. Offshore aggregations were observed over 7 months of the year and lobsters within the aggregations displayed behaviour consistent with the use of mutual defence. The sexual composition of the aggregations reflected seasonal patterns in male and female movement rates. Male J. edwardsii dominated the aggregations in winter and summer; times when peak feeding rates of males held in captivity were also recorded. Females dominated the offshore aggregations in September-October when larvae are released. Seven of the 26 lobsters fitted with acoustic tags moved over the boundaries of the Leigh Marine Reserve and Tawharanui Marine Park during offshore movements. Despite the fact that there is no fishing access to inshore reefs within the Leigh Marine Reserve, no significant difference was detected between the catch per unit effort (kg.trap haul-1) of lobsters caught around the reserve, nearby coastal Leigh or Little Barrier Island. However, catches around the marine reserve contained fewer (P=0.0009) but larger lobsters than at Little Barrier Island. The catch characteristics of lobsters from coastal Leigh were intermediate between the other two sites. As access to inshore reefs around the Leigh Marine Reserve was limited to a small area at either end of the reserve, traps tended to be set in offshore locations and the sexual composition of the total catch around the Leigh Marine Reserve reflected the seasonal movements of males and females into, and out, offshore areas. At coastal Leigh and Little Barrier Island the location of traps was not restricted and greater use was made of coastal fringing reefs. As a result the sexual composition of the catch at these locations did not reflect the movement of various components of the lobster population into and out of specific habitats or locations. Overall, the results of this study suggest that relatively small (~ 5 km2) no-take marine reserves increase lobster biomass and egg production, without adversely affecting catch rates in the surrounding fishery. Marine reserves may therefore represent a viable management tool, which if used in conjunction with other management regimes, could provide a more precautionary approach to the management of the J. edwardsii fishery at minimal cost to the industry.

Abstract:
Every engineer that has worked on designing an integrated circuit has to leverage an under- standing of device physics. Understanding device physics is essential when optimizing a design for speed, power, etc. These characteristics affect the bottom line when considering an integrated circuit used in a particular application. In order for there to be an under- standing of device physics, there must be a device model that is developed for a device of interest. The development of a device model often involves utilizing fundamental physical equations in a manner that is solvable by either analytical or numerical means. This typically begins by simplifying fundamental physical equations, possibly spanning multiple domains, and considering the physical quantities of interest. In order to make simplifications, assumptions about the underlying physics must be made. It is the process of transitioning from known physics laws to simplified mathematical models that a device modeler spans. This thesis will cover the device modeling aspects of a new classification of computing devices, spintronics. It will begin by stating the physical assumptions necessary for the operation of spintronic devices. Then it will go the process of deriving the underlying physical equations and stating them in a tractable form with the appropriate boundary conditions. Then these equations will be manipulated and mapped into an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuits will them be validated against analytical solutions provided from other works. It will then finish by providing example devices that can be simulated with the develop device models, and some optimization results are proposed based off a simplified circuit model.

Abstract:
The success of modern electronics is built on the possibility to accurately predict system behavior by the use of simulation tools. This paradigm can be extended to components such as sensors attached to the electronics. The ability to simulate both sensors (mechanical components) and electronics together renders possible effective optimizations at system level, i.e. minimizing size, cost and power consumption. In this thesis the simulation of a combined electronics and ultrasound sensor system is explored. The environment used is compatible with the electronic simulation tool SPICE. Improvements and verifications of existing SPICE models for ultrasound equipment is described, and applied in the design of integrated analog electronics for an ultrasound measurement system. Emphasis is put on the interdependence between acoustic performance and electronics design. The goal is to improve precision in the simulations to a level where real systems can be implemented from simulation results alone. The thesis is divided into introduction and three attached papers. In the introduction, an overview of ultrasound devices, measurement technology and simulation is given. Tools and design flow for analog integrated circuits are discussed. The first paper shows that system simulations can be used to minimize the size of the transistors used to excite an ultrasound transducer, while keeping maximum output ultrasound energy. A design of an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) driver stage for piezoelectric crystals is made and performance of the system is predicted using system simulations. Measurements and simulations are compared, showing that the optimum transistor size can be chosen from simulation data with very good precision. The goal with paper number two is to achieve absolute amplitude correctness in PSpice simulations of ultrasonic systems. Previously published models of the ultrasound propagation medium include viscoelastic loss but disregard loss due to diffraction, i.e. beam spreading. This paper presents a method to include diffraction loss in the models. Measurements and simulations have been performed using a pulse echo system in water. Results show that the simulated amplitude of the returned echo differs less than 10% from measured values in both near and far fields. In paper number three, the influence of parasitic electrical components on measurements and simulations is investigated. It is shown that simulation of excitation pulses can be done with very high accuracy if parasitics are taken into account. The coaxial cable which connects the electronics and the transducer represents one of the major parasitic components in the system. As the cable length is varied, pulse echo amplitudes and time delays shift. It is shown that simulations can be used to predict these effects with good accuracy.<br>Godkänd; 2001; 20070313 (ysko)

Abstract:
Spiny amaranth is a problematic weed of heavily grazed pastures in Kentucky and surrounding states. The first objective was to evaluate spiny amaranth control when herbicides are applied before and after emergence. Spiny amaranth seed collected in 2008 were seeded in rows in the fall (November) and the following spring (March) in fields located near Lexington and Princeton, KY. Treatments consisted of five application dates and five herbicides plus an untreated control arranged in a split-split plot design. The following parameters were measured: fresh weight, plant height and percent visual control. At both locations pendimethalin applied in November, March and April before spiny amaranth emergence gave the greatest control and significantly reduced fresh weight biomass compared to other treatments. June applications of 2,4-D reduced plant height and provided 80 control. Fresh weight biomass and height were also reduced with dicamba, aminopyralid and aminocyclopyrachlor applied in June compared to pendimethalin and the untreated control. A soybean bioassay was conducted to measure soil dissipation of aminopyralid, a common pasture herbicide active ingredient. Soil samples were collected from two sites in Lexington and Princeton. During a season of above average rainfall aminopyralid had dissipated from the soil within 16 weeks at Lexington and by 4 weeks at Princeton.

Armstrong, Brian Clement. "Processing techniques for improved radar detection in spiky clutter." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1992. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317536/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of improved radar detection of targets embedded in spiky clutter is addressed. Two main areas where improvements may be possible are investigated, namely improved clutter suppression by doppler filtering, and improved Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) processing. The clutter suppression performance of several doppler processors is quantified under a wide range of conditions. It is shown that in spatially homogeneous clutter ideal optimal (Hsiao) filters offer 2 to 3 dB higher improvement factor than conventional techniques. Adaptive Hsiao filters are evaluated under conditions of spatially heterogeneous clutter, and it is shown that practical losses due to filter adaptivity and spectral heterogeneity will outweigh the superior performance of ideal Hsiao filters in homogeneous clutter. It is concluded that improved doppler filtering offers little scope for improving detection performance in spiky clutter, and that more significant benefits are to be gained through improved CFAR processing. The performance of three current generation CFAR processors is evaluated in spatially uncorrelated K-distributed clutter to quantify detection losses. It is shown that losses of in excess of 10 dB can be expected in spiky clutter. Reducing the loss by exploitation of any spatial correlation of the underlying clutter power is investigated. To this end a mathematically rigorous model for spatially correlated K-distributed clutter is derived. An improved CFAR processor based on optimal weighting of reference cells is formulated and evaluated. It is shown that in highly correlated clutter CFAR loss can be reduced by 2 to 5 dB compared to Cell Averaging CFAR processors. An alternative "RDT-CFAR" processor is formulated to eliminate reliance on spatial correlation, and this is shown to reduce CFAR loss by more than 10 dB in spectrally homogeneous spiky clutter. However, an increase in false alarm rate in clutter without constant spectrum is demonstrated. The RDT-CFAR processor has been modified to eliminate dependence on surrounding range bins. The resulting "δ-CFAR" processor reduces CFAR loss by more than 10 dB in even moderately spiky clutter. It is also immune to extraneous targets and clutter edges, and its false alarm performance is insensitive to clutter spikiness.

Coutts, Emma Jayne. "The effect of noise in models of spiny dendrites." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2352.

Full text
Abstract:
The dendritic tree provides the surface area for synaptic connections between the 100 billion neurons in the brain. 90% of excitatory synapses are made onto dendritic spines which are constantly changing shape and strength. This adaptation is believed to be an important factor in learning, memory and computations within the dendritic tree. The environment in which the neuron sits is inherently noisy due to the activity in nearby neurons and the stochastic nature of synaptic gating. Therefore the effects of noise is a very important aspect in any realistic model. This work provides a comprehensive study of two spiny dendrite models driven by different forms of noise in the spine dynamics or in the membrane voltage. We investigate the effect of the noise on signal propagation along the dendrite and how any correlation in the noise may affect this behaviour. We discover a difference in the results of the two models which suggests that the form of spine connectivity is important. We also show that both models have the capacity to act as a robust filter and that a branched structure can perform logic computations.

Abstract:
This work focuses on modeling a demyelinated Hodgkin and Huxley (HH) neuron with Simulated Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis (SPICE) platform. Demyelinating disorders affect over 350,000 people in the U.S and understanding the demyelination process at the cellular level is necessary to find safe ways to treat the diseases [9]. Utilizing a previous SPICE model of an electrically small cell neuron developed by Szlavik [32], an extended core conductor myelinated neuron was produced in this work. The myelinated neuron developed has seven active Nodes of Ranvier (nodes) separated by a myelin sheath. The myelin sheath can be successfully modeled with a resistive and capacitive network known as internodes. Both the Nodes of Ranvier and internode equivalent circuits were implemented in P-SPICE sub-circuit library files. Properties of the neuron can be changed in the library files to simulate neurons of different electrical or geometric properties. Using the P-SPICE code developed in this work, a myelinated neuron’s action potential was simulated and the action potential at each node was recorded. The action potential at each node was uniform in amplitude and pulse width. The conduction velocity of the action potential was calculated to be 57.15 m/s. Demyelination can be modeled by decreasing the capacitance and increasing the resistance of the myelin [34]. Two demyelinated neuron models were simulated in this work. The first model had one internode segment demyelinated, and the second model was of three consecutive internode segments. The resulting conduction velocity was calculated for both simulations. For one and three internode segment demyelinated the conduction velocity was slowed to 44.15 m/s, and 27.15 m/s respectively. This model successfully showed that an HH neuron implemented in SPICE could show the effects of demyelination on conduction velocity The goal of this work is to develop a demyelinated neuron so that treatments for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other demyelinated neurons could be simulated to test various treatments’ effectiveness. A current treatment for MS is ion channel blockers. Future work would be to use this model to test current ion channel blocker therapy and to validate if such therapies alleviate conduction slowing.

Abstract:
Traditional SPICE simulation tools and applications of circuit theory lack real-time interaction and feedback. The goal of this thesis was to create an interactive physical environment to allow the manipulation and simulation of discrete electrical components in near-real-time while optimizing and streamlining the human-computer interaction (HCI) elements to make the user experience as positive and transparent as possible. This type of HCI and near-real-time simulation feedback would allow for the instant realization of how the parameters of each discrete component or hardware module affect the overall simulation and response of the circuit. The scope of this thesis is to research, design and develop two real-time interactive SPICE simulation tools and analyze the real-time benefits and HCI elements of both simulators, principally the user interface design itself. The first real-time interactive simulator (TouchSPICE) uses multiple embedded processors (touchscreen hardware blocks) and a host computer to build and simulate a circuit. The second real-time interactive simulator (ReActive-SPICE) uses a single host computer with integrated software to build and simulate a circuit, much like LTspice™ and PSpice™ without the real-time aspects. As part of the study, 20 students were asked to create circuits utilized in undergraduate-level labs using TouchSPICE and ReActive-SPICE for the sole purpose of providing feedback on the two user interfaces. Students were asked to complete a survey before, during and after circuit creation to provide a basis for judging the intuitiveness, efficiency and overall effectiveness of the HCIs. Conclusions based-off the surveys support the hypothesis that both TouchSPICE and ReActive-SPICE were more intuitive and overall simpler than traditional SPICE simulation tools. Feedback collected showed TouchSPICE to have a more intuitive user interface while ReActive-SPICE proved to be more efficient. ReActive-SPICE was further developed and enhanced to improve the user interface as well as the overall circuit creation and real-time simulation processes.

By measuring the quality of the protocols by viewing a video in a slow-motion benchmark compared to ordinary speeds it is shown that Spice has a low video quality compared to VNC. It is likely that due to a large amount of data sent, Spice does not manage to reach a high quality user experience.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation analyses the effects of current fisheries practices and management regulations of the green spiny lobster (Panulirus gracilis) in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Region (ETP). P. gracilis has reached a critical state in the ETP. Country-based studies report that between 60 and 98% of lobsters caught in the wild are under the minimum landing size (MLS). This means that spiny lobsters are being extracted before reproducing and contributing to the replenishment of interconnected populations. The recovery of green spiny lobster populations in the ETP and the future maintenance of a sustainable fishery will depend on effective management decisions and on taking in account environmental factors that influence the population dynamics of the lobsters. In the first study (Chapter 2), the B52 Spiny Lobster individual based simulation model was used for conducting a population viability analysis to quantify the effect of current fishing practices and the effect of varying management regulations on minimum landing size (MLS) and fishing effort. The best suit of regulations to maintain the highest abundance, production of offspring and catch is to protect juveniles and egged females, and to establish a MLS that assures the reproduction of individuals before being extracted. This study revealed regional variations, however the patterns and the causes for variation were not yet clear. This led to the next chapters in this dissertation. In Chapter 3, I used a meta-analysis to explore regional lobster variability by comparing published studies from the ETP. The objective was to identify patterns of variation related to geographic and environmental factors of the region that can inform the establishment and evaluation of coordinated regulations. Morphological relationships showed to be more variable at northern latitudes, where the mean annual sea surface temperatures are higher than at lower temperatures at the Equator. In terms of management, MLS regulations should be adapted accounting for the effect of sea surface temperature and its variation. Additionally, it was observed that monitoring methodologies are not standardized within the region and even in some cases, neither within countries. Furthermore, in most places monitoring of the spiny lobster fishery happens sporadically, only in Galapagos takes place every year. Identifying patterns of variations can improve the accuracy of prediction models which can help to explore, design, and apply more effective management measures, as well as promote regional coordination to support the recovery and maintenance of spiny lobsters. In Chapter 4, I contrast current Ecuadorian minimum landing size (MLS) regulation to lobster empirical measurements within Ecuador in order to recognize potential pitfalls for management enforcement. I used linear regression and multiple regression models with the objective of identifying potential relative size variations of the individuals caught in the wild over time and in the different fishing areas in Ecuador, as well as to analyse the effect of locality, sex, age and mean SST on the tail length/total length ratio. Morphological relations were significantly different among sexes, in time and by all sites. Most importantly, this study shows that current minimum size regulations are not applicable to all sites. Additionally, I found that water temperature has a significant effect on morphological relationship variations. However, it was not the main site-specific variable responsible for explaining such variations. In general, this work emphasizes the need for length data collection standardization and the consideration of temporal and spatial variation implications in national and regional fishery management planning, enforcement and evaluation.

Naber, John F. "The optimization of SPICE modeling parameters utilizing the Taguchi methodology." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/38542.

Full text
Abstract:
A new optimization technique for SPICE modeling parameters has been developed in this dissertation to increase the accuracy of the circuit simulation. The importance of having accurate circuit simulation models is to prevent the very costly redesign of an Integrated Circuit (IC). This radically new optimization technique utilizes the Taguchi method to improve the fit between measured and simulated I-V curves for GaAs MESFETs. The Taguchi method consists of developing a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) equation that will find the optimum combination of controllable signal levels in a design or process to make it robust or as insensitive to noise as possible. In this dissertation, the control factors are considered the circuit model curve fitting parameters and the noise is considered the variation in the simulated I-V curves from the measured I-V curves. This is the first known application of the Taguchi method to the optimization of IC curve fitting model parameters. In addition, this method is not technology or device dependent and can be applied to silicon devices as well. Improvements in the accuracy of the simulated I-V curve fit reaching 80% has been achieved between DC test extracted parameters and the Taguchi optimized parameters. Moreover, the computer CPU execution time of the optimization process is 96% less than a commercial optimizer utilizing the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (optimizing 31 FETs). This technique does a least square fit on the data comparing measured currents versus simulated currents for various combinations of SPICE parameters. The mean and standard deviation of this least squares fit is incorporated in determining the SNR, providing the best combination of parameters within the evaluated range. Furthermore, the optimum values of the parameters are found without additional simulation by fitting the response curves to a quadratic equation and finding the local maximum. This technique can easily be implemented with any simulator that utilizes simulation modeling parameters extracted from measured DC test data. In addition, two methods are evaluated to obtain the worst case modeling parameters. One method lobks at the correlation coefficients between modeling parameters and the second looks at the actual device parameters that define the +/- 30 limits of the process. Lastly, an example is given that describes the applicability of the Taguchi methodology in the design of a differential amplifier, that accounts for the effect of offset voltage.<br>Ph. D.

The occurance and distribution of astaxanthin in tissues of the spiny lobster, Jasus lalandii was investigated. The concentration of astaxanthin was quantified in the exoskeleton, haemolymph, muscles, gonads and hepatopancreas as well as in egg parcels from berried females during the moult as well as the reproductive cycles. Astaxanthin was the dominant carotenoid in all tissues, but small amounts of other carotenoids were detected. Exoskeleton, ovaries and extrude egg parcels had significantly higher astaxanthin concentration than haemolymp, muscles and hepatopancreas. This distribution of astaxanthin was found in both captive and free-living spiny lobsters. Free-living spiny lobsters generally had higher astaxanthin concentration than the captive spiny lobsters although the data is not statistically significant in all tissues investigated.

Abstract:
Background Herbal marijuana alternatives (HMA), legal plant products adulterated with synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists, represent a growing public health concern. Only a few case reports describe HMA and synthetic cannabinoid’s clinical toxicity. We describe an outbreak of HMA abuse primarily in the Midwest, the clinical presentation of HMA toxicity, and clinical and forensic testing. Methods During the course of ongoing surveillance for emerging drugs of abuse between November 2009 and August 2010, we retrospectively and prospectively identified a convenience sample comprising 81 cases of abuse of HMA products. Subject demographics, vital signs, lab results and urine were obtained (when available) and tested via gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis. Samples of HMAs and synthetic cannabinoids were also analyzed via GCMS. Results HMA users were predominantly young males who inhaled HMAs. Analysis of their urine detected synthetic cannabinoid parent compound in one subject. GCMS analysis of synthetic cannabinoids established a reference library that confirmed the presence of synthetic cannabinoids in sampled HMA products. Conclusion HMA products were available in head shops, gas stations, and via the Internet. We have confirmed the presence of synthetic cannabinoids in these HMA products. The tachycardia, hypertension, agitation, anxiety, vomiting and hallucinations observed in this convenience sample are not readily explained by the presence of synthetic cannabinoids acting on CB1 and CB2 receptors. Further research must be done on HMA products and their abusers.

博士<br>高雄醫學大學<br>藥學系博士班<br>105<br>Chilly (capsaicin) is considered as the most popular spice in the world. Spicy ingredients have considerable benefits for human health. The spicy sensation triggered by capsaicin is mediated by the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), which is also responsible for pain sensation. The vanillyl functional group of capsaicin is particularly important for the activation of TRPV1. There are many active natural compounds found in a wide variety of plants that contain vanillyl group linked to different side chain, i.e. capsaicin-like compounds, such as 6-gingerol, vanillin, eugenol, capsiate and curcumin. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of different side chain moieties on the biological activity. In the first chapter, we prepared a series of gingerol-like compounds, including zingerone, 6-, 8-, 10-gingerols, 6-, 8-, 10-shogaols and 6-, 8-, 10-paradols, and evaluated their anti-hyperglycemic activity. The results suggested that the different results on anti-diabetic activity of ginger presented by previous studies may be caused by the dynamic conversion, degradation and metabolic changes of ginger components. In the second chapter, we synthesized a series of paradols, capsinoids and capsaicinoids with the aim to understand whether these compounds possess the same anti-inflammatory capacity as capsaicin, and to evaluate their structure-activity relationship. In the third chapter, we found that the sesquiterpenes produced by epigenetic modified Aspergillus japonicum exerted glucose lowering activity by stimulating the utilization of glucose in the adipocytes. To predict the structure-activity, we plotted the compounds into the chemical space together with TRPV 1 agonist utilizing ChemGPS-NP. Interestingly, the sesquiterpene compounds were shown to share chemical properties with ginger-like compounds, capsinoids and capsaicinoids. In conclusion, the study suggested that compounds possessing vanillyl group are promising targets for further drug research and development.

碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>歷史研究所<br>104<br>Chili pepper origin in America is already a common spice in whole world today, especially in Asia. However, there were many kinds of spices like pepper or ginger in Eastern Asia before the coming of European ships. Yet chili pepper still wins a throne, as a "spicy revolution". The crush between biological features of chili pepper and Eastern Asian cultures is this the main report of the article, like the red color of chili pepper and Early-modern Chinese gardens, the spicy taste and diet therapy in Chinese medicine, and how chili pepper becomes necessary in some local cuisine.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>畜產學研究所<br>88<br>Spicy chicken nugget sold by street vendors around the metropolitan Taipei area as well as those produced by poultry processing plants are the subject of this study which includes documentation of methods of production, evaluation of consumer satisfaction and examination of microbial conditions. In addition, physical, chemical and microbial changes of diced chicken breast, raw vs. seasoned, are examined during cold storage. Street vendors generally prepare the food from scratch and use their own spices. Skinless diced chicken breast with or without bone, in bite size, were seasoned then stored with refrigeration. At the beginning of the workday, vendors breaded the seasoned chicken pieces and deep-fried them at 200℃ for one minute then let stand at room temperature. As soon as the customer placed an order, the product was refried at 180℃ for one minute, sprinkled with custom-made salt-pepper and placed in a paper bag. Products made by the poultry processing plants, on the other hand, were mass-produced mechanically: chicken breast was diced with a dicer and seasoned in a tumbler then kept at 5 to 8℃ for 4 to 24 hours. Batter and bread were added with a coating machine and deep-fried at 180℃ for 1 to 2 minutes and frozen immediately with an individual quick freezer. The final product was packaged and sold at the supermarket freezer section. Survey of 299 customers from 23 vendors indicated "favorable" to "fair" ratings regarding the overall acceptability, color, size, flavor, crispiness and tenderness. Negative attributes included oiliness (69.2%), rancidity (46.9%) and sourness (19.4%). Quality in order of its importance to the consumers is flavor and texture, clean equipment and utensil, freshness of raw ingredients and sound sanitation habit of the vendor. Majority of the consumers (80.3%) rated the hygiene condition of the vending stands as "clean" or "fair": the reasons being clean environment, frequent changes of frying oil, usage of smoke exhausting fan and wearing gloves and apron. Fewer consumers (3.0%) rated the hygiene condition as "not clean": the reasons being mixed usage of cutting board for both raw and cooked food, dirty environment, darkened frying oil, and poor personal hygiene of the vendor. No contamination of Salmonella, Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus was found in samples of nugget and salt-pepper from all 22 vendors studied. Total plate count of all nugget samples also met the Chinese Agricultural Standard. Bacillus cereus was found in 6 nugget samples and 7 salt-pepper samples, but the numbers found in the former group were within the limit set by the Food Sanitation Law. Coliform counts of 2 nugget samples and 17 salt-pepper samples, however, exceeded the limits. Total plate counts of all salt-pepper samples from vendors also exceeded limits set for spice-importing countries. Washing raw chicken was effective in reducing the total plate counts when vendors'' methods of preparation were compared. Microbial loads of seasoned chicken were similar to those found in raw ones. Deep-Fry significantly reduced total plate counts and eliminated indicator bacteria including coliform, E. coli and S. aureus. Refry did not further reduce microbial load. Studies of nugget samples from two poultry processing plants indicated the presence of E. coli, though the total plate counts were within the legal limits. Coliform count in one of the samples exceeded the legal limit. E. coli was also detected in the salt-pepper sample pre-treated with surface-radiation. Irradiated salt-pepper did lower total plate count, which was less than those detected in vendors'' samples but still exceeded the limit imposed for spice-importing countries. Coliform count of this sample was over the legal limit as well. Further studies were made on diced, raw and seasoned chicken breast during cold storage. After 3 days'' storage at 7℃ (6 days after slaughter), raw chicken was slightly slimy and had weak putrid odor. Significant increases of microbes, including Pseudomonas, E. coli, psychrophilic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, coliform and total plate counts were detected. Though pH values remained unchanged, the level of volatile basic nitrogen increased while the extract release volume decreased, both significantly. Walkiewicz reaction was found to be a poor indicator test since it failed to correlate with the above mentioned test results and early signs of spoilage. Seasoned chicken seemingly remained unchanged, with no detectable odor or taste during the first three days of cold storage. In addition, total plate counts and pH values were comparable to those found with raw chicken on day 0. Sourness was detected in seasoned chicken on day 5 of cold storage in which significant increases in total plate counts, lactic acid bacteria counts and the level of volatile basic nitrogen were detected. Drops in pH value was also quite significant. Growth of coiform and E. coli appeared to be retarded, however. In the case of seasoned chicken, increased microbial loads and/or a lowered pH can be used as an assessment for the degree of freshness and spoilage. The significant increase in the level of volatile basic nitrogen indicated the incipient spoilage of the chicken. Although seasoned chicken was found to have longer shelf life than that of raw chicken, it still should be cooked and consumed within 3 to 4 days of cold storage or, 6 to 7 days after slaughter before perceptible sign of spoilage was detected.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄應用科技大學<br>財富與稅務管理系碩士在職專班<br>106<br>As the spicy hot pot market is increasingly competitive, how to increase customer's willingness to come back is an important key. This study explored the relationship among the service quality of the spicy hot pot restaurants, customer satisfaction, and repurchase intention from the perspective of consumers. From the point of view of service quality, a theoretical framework was constructed to explore the impact among the variables and to collect data through questionnaires. In order to explore the relationship among the variables, this study used the linear regression model to test the research hypothesis, and used single-factor analysis of variance to explore the differences in customer’s perceptions of service quality, customer satisfaction, and repurchase intention. A total of 600 questionnaires were issued, and 530 were recovered; however, 4 incomplete answers were deducted, thus, 526 were valid questionnaires, for a valid recovery rate of 87.67%. The OLS regression analysis of the data of the 526 customers of the spicy hot pot restaurants showed that: the service quality of the spicy hot pot restaurant had positive effect on customer satisfaction, and customer satisfaction had positive impact on the willingness to repurchase. The contribution of this thesis is to put forward the research conclusions through empirical analysis, which can serve as improvement criteria and reference for the operations of hotpot restaurants in the future.
