Im Jahr 1745 veröffentlichte der Benediktinerpater Meinrad Spieß mit dem Tractatus musicus compositorio-practicus eine einflussreiche musiktheoretische Schrift, die zum autodidaktischen Erlernen der Grundlagen für die musikalische Komposition bestimmt war. Das 1746 in zweiter Auflage erschienene Werk behandelt im Wesentlichen die kirchenmusikalische Praxis, bezieht aber darüber hinaus auch andere Stile ein und stützt sich besonders auf zeitgenössische Autoren wie Johann Mattheson und Johann David Heinichen. Die Ausgabe orientiert sich im Layout am historischen Vorbild, jedoch mit moderner Schlüsselung der Notenbeispiele, die einen zentralen Analysegegenstand des Tractatus darstellen und eine Vielzahl von Satzmodellen exemplifizieren. Der Kommentar untersucht diese Beispiele und stellt Bezüge zu den erwähnten Theoretikern her.

Abstract:

Bisher lassen sich Emergenz und Reiz von Spielphänomenen nicht einheitlich erklären. Auf der Grundlage der Theorie sozialer Systeme werden symbolische Generalisierungen als Kernelemente für psychosozialen Strukturaufbau in dieser Studie zum Ausgangspunkt für die Beobachtung der Differenz von Spiel- und Alltagshandlungen. Es wird untersucht, ob sich Spiel als Zustand konvergenter Erwartungshaltungen definieren lässt. Die These behauptet, dass sowohl zeitliche, sachliche als auch soziale Orientierungen im Spiel als begrenzte Dimensionen antizipiert werden und sich damit von allen anderen kommunikativen Handlungen unterscheiden. Nach der Begründung des Themas wird im ersten Teil die Plausibilität der These durch den soziologischen Konstruktivismus nach Luhmann an den Wirkungen von Spiel - Lernen und Emotionen - begründet und mit natur- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen verglichen. Im empirischen Teil werden die Entwicklungen zu einem innovativen Studiendesign beschrieben und die Ergebnisse dokumentiert. Aus qualitativen Befragungen zur Wahrnehmung von Sinndimensionen wurden Aussagen konstruiert, mit denen sich im Anschluss eine quantitative Untersuchung durchführen ließ. Der Befund der Studie ergibt zum einen, dass eine Differenzierung von Spiel und Nicht-Spiel entlang der Unterscheidung konvergenter und divergenter Erwartungshaltungen möglich ist und diese deshalb als Untersuchungsobjekt genutzt werden können. Zum anderen zeigte sich, dass die Unterscheidungsfähigkeit von Spielern geleistet werden kann, Nichtspieler jedoch eine hochsignifikante Unsicherheit bei der Zuordnung von Erwartungen aus Spiel und Alltag aufweisen. Zusätzlich zur Bestätigung der These kann durch die Studie angenommen werden, dass Spieler ihre Umwelt differenzierter einschätzen können, als Nicht-Spieler.

Abstract:

We describe the first data release from the Spitzer-IRAC Equatorial Survey (SpIES); a large-area survey of similar to 115 deg(2) in the Equatorial SDSS Stripe 82 field using Spitzer during its "warm" mission phase. SpIES was designed to probe sufficient volume to perform measurements of quasar clustering and the luminosity function at z >= 3 to test various models for "feedback" from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Additionally, the wide range of available multi-wavelength, multi-epoch ancillary data enables SpIES to identify both high-redshift (z >= 5) quasars as well as obscured quasars missed by optical surveys. SpIES achieves 5 sigma depths of 6.13 mu Jy (21.93 AB magnitude) and 5.75 mu Jy (22.0 AB magnitude) at 3.6 and 4.5 mu m, respectively-depths significantly fainter than the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We show that the SpIES survey recovers a much larger fraction of spectroscopically confirmed quasars (similar to 98%) in Stripe 82 than are recovered by WISE (similar to 55%). This depth is especially powerful at high-redshift (z >= 3.5), where SpIES recovers 94% of confirmed quasars, whereas WISE only recovers 25%. Here we define the SpIES survey parameters and describe the image processing, source extraction, and catalog production methods used to analyze the SpIES data. In addition to this survey paper, we release 234 images created by the SpIES team and three detection catalogs: a 3.6 mu m. only detection catalog containing similar to 6.1 million sources, a 4.5 mu m. only detection catalog containing similar to 6.5 million sources, and a dual-band detection catalog containing similar to 5.4 million sources.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the phenomenon of labor espionage from the mid-nineteenth century through the 1930s. Trade unionists coined the term to describe the use of undercover agents posing as workers to collect information for employers about their employees' opinions and activities. Labor spies sometimes identified union supporters and blocked organizing drives; other spies functioned more like surrogate supervisors checking on job performance.;I explore the origins of labor espionage in "spotting," undercover surveillance of railway workers by private detectives to catch theft. I argue that spotting began as a management technology to cope with large dispersed railway workforces, but managers soon saw that secret agents could also monitor workers' behavior and subvert collective action. Rail workers' unions were hamstrung by shame over worker theft and unable to exploit public sympathy to limit employers' use of undercover agents. Next, I examine the difficulties encountered by the American Federation of Hosiery Workers when they tried to systematically counter labor spies in their industry and find that the Hosiery Workers' campaign showed that no union could effectively counter labor spies, and that the union was further hampered by its inability to acknowledge that many spies came from its own ranks. Finally, I compare labor spies to Communists as undercover agents deploying similar strategies in attempts to infiltrate American unions. Unionists developed narratives of infiltration to denounce both labor spies and Communists but deployed them to different ends in the 1930s; progressives used the labor spy narrative to lobby for federal oversight of labor relations, and conservatives used the Communist narrative to attach progressives and fight expanded federal authority. Labor conservatives helped drive early American anticommunism and the rise of McCarthyism.;Trade unionists and historians have avoided a critical fact about labor espionage, that workers performed most secret surveillance. Labor espionage should be seen not just as a management tool, but as a manifestation of worker antiunionism. Rather than asking how labor espionage impaired the growth of American unions, we should ask why some workers chose to subvert collective action, and integrate worker antiunionism into our understanding of American working-class formation.

Abstract:

As a popular fiction hero Sherlock Holmes, embodies a mythical champion of enduring appeal, confirmed in his recent rebranding as defender of the oppressed for the twenty first century in a television series geared for the modern age. Stepping outside the boundaries of the law, he achieves an individualised form of justice superior to that of the judicial system in the eyes of his readers, yet, as I argue in this study, his long list of criminal offences places him firmly in the realms of criminality. This thesis explores the fictional discretionary lawbreaking of Sherlock Holmes and a range of contemporaneous maverick literary detectives and spies in popular literature produced between 1880 and the end of the First World War, including Martin Hewitt, Dick Donovan, Judith Lee, Hagar Stanley, Charles Carruthers and Arthur Davies, Richard Hannay and Bulldog Drummond. From Holmes to Hagar Stanley, the urban gypsy, my aim is to unearth the reasons for, the motivations behind and the implications of, the illegal behaviour of these fictional detectives. Charting the criminal liminality of amateur and professional detectives who manipulate justice on the mandatory authority of readers of popular fiction, I investigate the works in an interdisciplinary study that focuses on socio-cultural, historical, criminological and legal perspectives. In the light of a range of influences that created societal change, including the rise of professional society, evolving perceptions of crime, criminals and the law and the impact of societal shift from a religious to a secular morality, I engage with themes of gender, class and race revealing the discrimination and marginalisation endured by much of the population. My argument in this thesis counters the wholly Foucauldian view of D. A Miller in The Novel and the Police (1988) and Stephen Knight in Form and Ideology in Crime Fiction (1980), amongst others, who see the role of the fictional detective as embedding discipline, rational order and regulation in the reading public. Instead I argue that the behaviour of the literary detective represents a challenge to authority, which destabilises the status quo by shedding light on deep-rooted injustices at the heart of the judicial system. Each of the chapters in the study highlights aspects of the criminal justice system that run counter to the principles of justice, and traces the waning influence of morality on decision making as detectives mutate into spies near the turn of the century. My choice of texts from the works of eight authors in a combination of eighteen short story and novel works from popular culture, is based mostly on writers whose work featured in the pages of the popular (by popular I refer to authors who have published in magazines as well as in board collections) entertainment Strand Magazine in the course of their literary careers and who went on to achieve popular success, thus creating a shared connection and literary bond between the authors.

In my cross disciplinary practice I research the interconnections between topics of mental illnesses and BDSM. In this text I aimed to describe two research methods, out from something very complex — and to provide an insight, partly expose and display some selected fragments from the process of investigation. Understanding within the power dynamics. Role of a switch and reversed power roles. Drawing a line in between their unholy alliance. I talk about body of control, power, power roles, desire, happiness and care in various forms. Meaning not only a physical body — as it is translated into art works in formats of objects and physical installations — also as a psychical body as a performative tool, and a body as a structural form. I collect lived experiences and emotions to my archive. I build, ask, perform and translate. Consisting layers, questions, states and interconnections. Instead of simplifying the complicated, I aim to clarify it. Leave space for imaginary experience. Singularly cross dressing the intellectual to emotional and vice verse. Cross dressing languages, images, rooms and identities. Cross dressing to a role, a persona — as much as cross dressing out from one. The foundation for my work is build on psychological, mental and emotional states, where humanity, human nature, emotional states and desires play the key roles.

Abstract:

Die Musikbetriebe der klassischen und der „Neuen“ Musik sehen sich gegenwärtig mit zwei publikumsbezogenen Problemen konfrontiert. Während „die Neue Musik einsam alt geworden ist“ und „das spärliche Publikum, das oft nur ein Konzert besucht, weil es zum Abonnement gehört, […] dieser Musik häufig verständnislos gegenüber [sitzt]“ (DIE ZEIT 43/2009: 57), droht das vergreiste und oftmals als „elitär“ etikettierte Publikum der klassischen Musik allmählich auszusterben. Diese Befunde beruhen methodisch oft auf subjektive, alltagspsychologische Betrachtungen der Konzertbesucher im Konzertsaal, was häufig zu einer Fehlinterpretation der tatsächlichen Situation führt (vgl. Dollase 1985: 371). Will man erfahren, ob es das typische Klassik- bzw. Neue-Musik-Publikum wirklich gibt und worin es sich vom jeweils anderen unterscheidet, so ist eine wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Problematik unumgänglich. Seit dem Boom der Kultursoziologie in den 1970er Jahren wurden der Konzertbesuch und der Musikgeschmack immer mehr zum Gegenstand soziologischer Forschungen. Ihre Ergebnisse führten zu der Auffassung, dass die musikalische und musikkulturelle Praxis nicht nur auf persönlich bevorzugte ästhetische Qualitäten, sondern auch auf die Zugehörigkeit zu sozialen Gruppen verweist (vgl. Neuhoff 2001: 752). Anzunehmen wäre deshalb, dass sich aufgrund der kulturellen Nähe der klassischen und Neuen Musik zueinander, auch ähnliche Publika herausgebildet haben. Dass sowohl theoretisch als auch empirisch vieles gegen diese Annahme spricht, soll die vorliegende Studie zeigen. Abstract:

Function spaces with asymptotics is a usual tool in the analysis on manifolds with singularities. The asymptotics are singular ingredients of the kernels of pseudodifferential operators in the calculus. They correspond to potentials supported by the singularities of the manifold, and in this form asymptotics can be treated already on smooth configurations. This paper is aimed at describing refined asymptotics in the Dirichlet problem in a ball. The beauty of explicit formulas highlights the structure of asymptotic expansions in the calculi on singular varieties.

Varje år i slutet av maj går tävlingen Shell Eco Marathon av stapeln på Nogarobanan (Se figur 1) i södra Frankrike. Tävlingen är indelad i två kategorier, ”Prototype” och ”Urban concept”. Tävlingen går ut på att, med ett egenhändigt konstruerat fordon köra en sträcka på minimal mängd bränsle. I kategorin ”Urban concept” skall de deltagande köra så långt som möjligt, men även stanna och starta flera gånger under loppets gång. Till skillnad från ”Urbanconcept” behöver de tävlande i kategorin ”Prototype” inte stanna någon gång under tävlingen. KTH har under flera år ställt upp i båda kategorierna, men denna studie inriktar sig endast på Spiros, KTH:s bidrag till ”Urban concept”. Under de föregående åren har Spiros inte kommit imål eftersom de tävlande haft problem med värmeutvecklingen i motorrummet pga. otillräcklig ventilation. Detta har skett till följd av att den tänkta vattenkylda motorn ersatts med en luftkyld motor som kräver mer ventilation. I denna studie undersöks möjligheterna att kyla de båda motorlösningarna för att med större säkerhet klara av tävlingen. Resultatet av studien tyder på att båda motorerna kan kylas utan större ombyggnad av fordonet genom att använda sig av en oljeradiator ventilerad med självdrag för HCCI-motorn, samt den inbyggda fläkten som ventilation för Ottomotorn.
Every year in the end of May the Shell Eco Marathon takes place at the Nogaro track (Shown in figure 1) in the south of France. The race is divided into the categories “Prototype” and“Urban concept”. The participants in the “Prototype” category are supposed to, using theirown vehicles, drive a certain distance using the least amount of fuel possible. In “Urbanconcept” the drivers are also supposed to stop and start several times during the race. One team from KTH has participated in each category of the race for several years, although this study only involves the vehicle competing in “Urban concept”. Due to overheating, caused by lack of ventilation of the engine compartment, this vehicle has not been able to complete the race for the last two years. The ventilation problem occurred because the primary water cooled engine was replaced by an air cooled engine requiring better ventilation. The objective of this study is to investigate possible solutions for cooling both engines to reassure that the vehicle reaches the finish line. Results of the study indicate that both engines can be sufficiently cooled without major modifications of the vehicle body. For the water cooled engine, this is achieved using an oil radiator ventilated by air flow trough the engine compartment. The air cooled engine is ventilated by its built in fan.

Abstract:

Masonry spires are a typical part of church architecture. Since it is rare that masonry is used as a load-bearing material in the western world today, it is important to maintain and increase the knowledge of modelling masonry structures both from a maintenance point of view and to build new masonry structures. The purpose of this master thesis is to look at and evaluate some different methods to model masonry spires exposed to common loads such as gravity, settlement and wind. The spire of the Salisbury Cathedral is used as a template regarding geometry and mechanical properties for the modelling methods. Two modelling methods are used in the master’s thesis. The first one is the limit analysis method applied to masonry. It is used to calculate a critical thickness for the masonry of the spire for a severe wind load. The second method is the Finite Element Method (FEM). The commercial finite element software Abaqus is used to create the model and the discretization used with the FE modelling is the macro-modelling approach. Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) in Abaqus is used as the material model and adapted to masonry. The finite element model consists of the spire itself along with the supporting structure beneath it down to the piers. Four different simulations (jobs) are run with varying wind direction and two of them have settling piers. The results from the finite element simulations indicate that the membrane stresses in the spire faces for the various jobs were not significantly different from one another. One of the jobs with settling piers could not be completed because the tensile stresses in the arches reached the tensile strength capacity of the material. The other simulation with a settlement that did complete did not have any significant difference in stress compared with the simulations without settlements. While the arches and the piers underwent plastic straining the spire itself did not. The stress levels there remained in the linear range for all the completed simulations. The finite element results also agree with the limit analysis. These findings call into question some of the modelling choices. The inclusion of the structure beneath the spire in the finite element model, as a way to study the effect of settlements, did not give more insight into the spire’s behaviour. Furthermore, the method to implement settlements was too inaccurate and another approach should be used to study the effect of settlements on the state of spires. Further work needs to be done on that topic. Improvements can also be made regarding how CDP was adapted for masonry.
Murade tornspiror är en vanlig takkonstruktion inom kyrkoarkitekturen. Eftersom det numera är sällsynt att murverk fungerar som lastbärande material i västvärlden, är det viktigt att upprätthålla och utöka kunskapen om murverkskonstruktioner för både underhåll och nybyggnation. Syftet med denna masteruppsats är att betrakta och utvärdera några olika modelleringsmetoder för murade tornspiror som är utsatta för några typiska laster såsom egentyngd, sättningar och vind. Katedralen i Salisbury används som en modelleringsmall i uppsatsen med avseende på katedralens geometri och materialegenskaper. Två modelleringsmetoder används i uppsatsen. Den första är gränsanalys tillämpad på murverkskonstruktioner. Den används för att beräkna en kritisk tjocklek för tornspiran under en stor vindlast. Den andra metoden är Finita Elementmetoden (FEM). Den kommersiella finita elementprogramvaran Abaqus används för finita elementanalysen och diskretiseringen som används för murverket i finita elementmodellen är makromodellering. Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) i Abaqus används som materialmodell och anpassas för murverk. Finita elementmodellen består utav själva tornspiran inklusive de bärande delarna under spiran och ned till pelarna. Fyra olika simuleringar ("jobb") körs med vindlast som angriper från olika riktningar och två av simuleringarna har pelare som sätter sig. Resultaten från simuleringarna visar att membranspänningarna i tornspirans väggar, för de olika jobben, inte skilde sig i någon betydelig grad från varandra. Ett av jobben med pelare som satte sig kunde inte köras klart eftersom dragspänningarna i valvbågarna överskred draghållfastheten på murverket i modellen. Den andra simuleringen med sättningar som kördes klart uppvisade inte några avsevärda skillnader i spänningar i tornspiran jämfört med simuleringarna utan sättningar. Medan plastiska töjningar uppkom i både valvbågarna och pelarna i modellen, uppkom de inte i tornspiran. Spänningsnivåerna i tornspiran var inom det linjära intervallet för alla simuleringar. Resultaten från finita elementanalysen stämde överens med resultaten från gränsanalysen. Analysresultaten ifrågasätter vissa av modelleringsvalen. Att inkludera de bärande delarna under tornspiran i finita elementmodellen, för att undersöka effekten av sättningar, gav inte en större insikt i hur sättningar påverkar tornspiran. Dessutom, var metoden för att tillämpa sättningar för oprecis och en annan metod borde användas. Mer arbete måste utföras vad gäller det ämnet. Sättet att tillämpa CDP för murverk kan också förbättras.

Im Rahmen der Performancekunst in Nordamerika und Europa seit 1970 lassen sich Performances ausmachen, die sich inhaltlich mit dem Sterben befassen. Die vorliegende Dissertation widmet sich der Frage, inwiefern sich die existenzielle Performancekunst als Medium zur Evokation von Sterblichkeitsbewusstsein eignet. Den Untersuchungsgegenstand bilden 19 Performances, die als existenzielle Performancekunst bezeichnet werden. Die Performer*innen zeigen ihr „Spiel mit dem Sterben“ oder laden dazu ein, bei der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Sterben mitzuspielen. Es wird analysiert, auf welche Weise sich die elf Performer*innen in existenzieller Performance mit Sterblichkeit befassen. Dabei fällt auf, dass es einerseits eine spielerische, liminoide Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema gibt. Andererseits lassen sich existenzielle Performances ausmachen, die eine ernste, liminale Auseinandersetzung mit der Sterblichkeit aufzeigen, da sich der Künstler/die Künstlerin Schmerzen zufügt bzw. zufügen lässt oder gar in die Gefahr begibt, während der Performance zu sterben. Jene dichotomischen Aspekte, wie sie bereits der Anthropologe Victor Turner beschrieb, werden konkretisiert mit existenzieller Performancekunst in Zusammenhang gebracht und zudem auf Überlegungen der Theaterwissenschaftlerin Erika Fischer-Lichte zur Liminalität bezogen und weiterentwickelt. Im Fokus stehen somit auftretende und sich auflösende Dichotomien, sowie die Interpersonalität zwischen Performenden und Teilnehmenden. Darüber hinaus werden Primäraspekte existenzieller Performancekunst herausgearbeitet. Die Primäraspekte und die dichotomischen Aspekte werden im Hinblick auf die Evokation von Sterblichkeitsbewusstsein untersucht. Die vorliegende Dissertation reflektiert darüber hinaus Fragen der Medialität von existenzieller Performancekunst.
Within the context of performance art in North America and Europe since 1970 several performances that consider mortality can be identified. This dissertation deals with the question, whether existential performance art is suitable as medium to evoke an awareness of mortality. The research object consists of 19 performances that are designated as existential performance art. The performers show their „play with dying“ or invite to participate in the involvement with dying. It is analysed in which kind of way the eleven performer deal with mortality in existential performance art. As can be noticed, on the one hand there is a ludic and liminoid involvement with dying. On the other hand art performances can be identified that demonstrate serious and liminal involvement with dying, because of the artist`s willingness to suffer or even to run the risk of losing his or her life while performing. Those dichotomic aspects, as already described by anthropologist Victor Turner, are made concrete and brought into connection with existential performance art in this dissertation. Furthermore the dissertation refers to Erika Fischer-Lichte`s thoughts concerning liminality, but extends the ideas related to existential performance art and mortality. Oscillating dichotomies are focussed on as well as the interpersonal encounter between performer and participant. Primary aspects of existential performance art are worked out. Both dichotomic and primary aspects are examined concerning their role in evoking an awareness of mortality. Moreover this dissertation reflects on mediality of existential performance art.

On a formal level, the novel explores the ability of traditional narrative structures to carry postmodern themes. The theme, in this case, is the struggle for a stable identity when there is no stable community against which or in relationship to an identity might be defined.

Game theory models predict that individuals involved in contests adjust their strategy appropriate to the current value of the contested resource and the resource holding potential (RHP) of their opponent. In this investigation, I examined interactively operating, multiple contest asymmetries on dyadic disputes for precopulatory guarding positions in the crab spider Misumenoides formosipes. In contests between equally sized opponents with no previous contest experience, residents had clear advantages in fighting success over intruders. In the remaining two experiments, asymmetries in experience predicted outcome when tested against residency and size asymmetries. Data from this investigation suggest crab spiders learn strategies through experience rather than rely solely on the assessment of their opponent’s RHP before determining contest effort.

The genus Poltys C.L. Koch is revised for Australia and partly examined for the wider Australasian region. Five of the ten species originally described from Australia are found to be synonymous with South East Asian species, a further three are synonymous with an Australian species and four which were previously overlooked are newly described, resulting in a total of eight current species recorded from Australia. Poltys coronatus Keyserling, P. keyserlingi Keyserling, P. multituberculatus Rainbow and P. penicillatus Rainbow are synonymised with P. illepidus C.L. Koch; P. microtuberculatus Rainbow is synonymised with P. stygius Thorell; P. bimaculatus Keyserling, P. mammeatus Keyserling and P. salebrosus Rainbow are synonymised with P. laciniosus Keyserling; P. sigillatus Chrysanthus from New Guinea is synonymised with P. frenchi Hogg. Five new species are described, four from Australia, P. grayi sp.nov., P. jujorum sp.nov., P. milledgei sp.nov. and P. noblei sp.nov., and P. timmeh sp.nov. from New Caledonia. A checklist of all Poltys types described from the region, including illustrations, is included. The delimitation of the Australian species is aided and confirmed by DNA sequencing. Sequences from two genes and morphological characters are used to reconstruct a phylogeny of the Australian species. The generic relationships of Poltys are examined in the context of the putative tribe Poltyini (Simon, 1895). No firm conclusions about the relationships of Poltys can be made, however the results indicate that the Poltyini is polyphyletic. The results of field studies are presented; these indicate that P. noblei is less likely to move between web sites than diurnal taxa referenced from other studies. Specimens were shown to sometimes occupy the same, or a closely adjacent web site, for over eight months. Spiders most often move during spring and summer but often remain in the same site throughout winter. Specimens of Poltys noblei are also shown to be unevenly distributed on trees and bushes in respect to aspect and position. It is suggested that these observations indicate the importance of camouflage to deter wasp and bird predators. Specimens of several Poltys species were reared from egg sacs, confirming male–female identification and showing the variation in abdominal shape between siblings. Growth data indicate that sibling males and females cannot normally interbreed; males mature after 2–4 moults, females after 8–11 moults. Field and cage observations of general aspects of Poltys biology are presented including preferred habitat, prey capture and handling, courtship and mating, competition and web construction.

Abstract:

To date, there is a scant amount of research on the long-term benefits of exercise training for individuals with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate standardized outcomes of a six-month maintenance pulmonary rehabilitation program to determine maintenance of functional capacity. Twenty-three subjects (sixteen men, seven women) diagnosed with clinical COPD ages 30-82 (65 + 12 years) participated in the retrospective study. The subjects were referred to an eight-week comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program after which upon twelve subjects continued onto a maintenance program. Eleven subjects chose not to participate in the maintenance program and were given a home exercise program and were encouraged to remain active. Hemodynamic, functional, and educational measures were taken prior to entry, upon completion of the hospital program, and again six-months post-program. Outcome tests were standardized using the Indiana Society of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Outcomes Manual. Significantdifferences were found between the maintenance and non-maintenance groups for systolic blood pressure in resting, exercise, and recovery measures at six months reevaluation. Differences in oxygen saturation were also found to reach significance between the two groups during recovery from the six-minute walk test. Interestingly, duration of exercise was found to be statistically significant between the two groups as well as emergency room visits and physician visits within the last six months. The maintenance group tended to have fewer emergency room and physician visits in addition to having self-reported higher durations of exercise. In conclusion, maintenance pulmonary rehabilitation programs have been shown to maintain physical activity levels for COPD patients and as a result, fewer quality of life consequences specifically the number of hospital admissions and emergency room visits.
