Abstract:
Features of the interpretation of events related to the life and death of the Queen of Scotland, Mary Stuart (1542-1587), in the works of the outstanding German playwright F. Schiller (1759-1805) and his contemporary, the famous writer Christian Heinrich Spiess (Spiess, 1755-1799) is considered. The originality in the image of the last days of Mary by C. H. Spiess and F. Schiller is emphasized. The question is raised about the various literary and aesthetic positions of both German writers. Attention is paid to the review of works in various genres and genres of art dedicated to Mary Stuart by Spiess and Schiller. First, an analysis of the work of the author, which is secondary in the framework of German and European literature, is presented, since Spiess wrote his tragedy many years before the great German playwright. It is shown that Schiller’s tragedy was written with a characteristic thirst for epic coverage of reality, while the stage play of Spiess is more focused on the events of the last days of Mary Stuart’s life and turns into a chamber work. The results of the study can be used when giving lecture courses on foreign literature of the XVIII-XXI centuries, special courses on the literature of Western European countries, on the problems of classical literature in Germany, as well as literature of the Western European Enlightenment and pre-romanticism.

ISSN 0804–4643 This paper reports the results of a prospective controlled trial of a program addressing reduction of onset distress and better future adaptation in adults who were enrolled at the time of diagnosis of type I diabetes mellitus. Patients were assigned randomly to either standard intensive treatment and patient education with the distress reduction program (N = 10) or to standard intensive treatment and patient education without this program (N = 13). Prospective follow-up of patients with multiple validated measures of treatment outcome showed less anxious coping behavior, less depression and less denial at the 9-month follow-up and less denial at the 15-month follow-up in the group with the distress reduction program, but no differences in metabolic control between the two groups at any time. We conclude that our program has a positive impact on the crisis at diabetes onset; the lower denial in the treatment group may lead to improved regimen adherence in the long term. The use of caribou ( Rangifer tarandus) and beaver ( Castor canadensis) by New England Paleoindians has been confirmed by new evidence. Using an approach which includes consideration of bone shrinkage during calcination, in addition to species—specific morphology, Spiess has identified faunal assemblages composed exclusively of mammal bone from two sites in central New England, The Bull Brook site (Massachusetts) and the Whipple site (New Hampshire). Caribou is the most commonly identified species at both sites, although beaver is present at Bull Brook. Because of the variability of caribou behavior in different environmental contexts, the implications of these identifications for the reconstruction of Paleoindian subsistence economy must await further research.

Embora a primeira menção à lenda de Fausto em um livro impresso tenha sido feita no texto anônimo editado por Johann Spiess em 1587, a propagação e perenidade do assunto fáustico no imaginário ocidental são fenômenos que certamente devem ser creditados à tragédia escrita por J. W. von Goethe no século XIX, sobretudo à primeira parte, publicada em 1808. Tendo em vista que em sua recriação do mito fáustico Goethe reconhecidamente atribui um papel fundamental ao demônio Mefistófeles, o que se propõe neste artigo é uma interpretação do discurso mefistofélico, em passagens selecionadas da primeira parte do Fausto goethiano, como o veículo de uma visão autoral crítica, ainda que irônica, em relação a determinados aspectos do contexto sociocultural alemão da época.

There is a considerable body of information of a technical and review nature on negative staining elsewhere in the literature (Bremner et al., 1992; Harris and Home, 1991, 1994; Hayatand Miller, 1990; Holzenburg, 1988; Home, 1991; Nermut, 1991; Spiess et al., 1987; Valentine and Home, 1962); therefore, I shall attempt to avoid undue repetition and present the current laboratory approaches with which I am personally familiar and have achieved some technical success. After considering the range of procedures necessary for the production of carbon and carbon-plastic support films (sometimes termed substrates) emphasis will be placed upon the droplet negative staining technique (Harris and Agutter, 1970; Harris and Horne, 1991). I was introduced to this approach by Ennio Lucio Benedetti in his laboratory, at the start of my doctoral studies in 1966 (Anderson, 1966; Benedetti and Emmelot, 1965,1968) and with minor variations it is still useful for many biological applications.

The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act (PSLRA) increases restrictions on private litigation for securities fraud. We examine stock price reactions on legislative-event-related days of firms in four high-litigation-risk industries. Two other studies on this issue, Spiess and Tkac (1997) (ST) and Johnson et al. (2000) (JKN), conclude that shareholders considered PSLRA beneficial. While we find largely similar daily abnormal returns for event-related days that they examine, we present evidence that the timing of multiple confounding events makes the interpretation of these daily returns ambiguous. Results from additional analyses beyond those conducted by ST and JKN (market price reversal tests, analysis of additional legislative-event-related days, cumulative abnormal returns over the legislative period, and analysis of other events affecting investors' ability to bring securities-related lawsuits), are largely inconsistent with their interpretation, suggesting instead that shareholders in the four high-litigation-risk industries react negatively on average to PSLRA's restrictions on their ability to bring securities-related lawsuits.

Abstract:
In general, schooling and nation-building are associated with the unifying role of language and history education, since language and culture are perceived as fundamental pillars of the nation. Less discussed—at least regarding the curriculum—is the role of physical education, even if physical education was a highly political issue in the first decades of the nineteenth century. Based on a case study of Switzerland and textbooks for physical education by Adolf Spiess and the activities of Phokion Heinrich Clias for the Bernese school, this article discusses how physical education, distinct from the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries’ care for the body, became a school subject of the nineteenth century compulsory schools and how it was related to the notion of nation and nation-building. It argues that physical education became first part of the “modern” philanthropic education and schooling, was soon taken for granted as an essential curricular component of nation-building and lost thereby the political threat.

From the Renaissance, dance and sport formed the basis of ‘polite’ and ethical behaviour. Both offered a frame within which social norms could be taught and enacted. Scholarship has often concentrated either on the history and aesthetics of dance or on those of gymnastics but neglected the proximity of both forms to each other. This paper focuses on one particular narrative: the intertwining of dance and gymnastics as utopian projects in the arousal of nationalism and creation of a new ‘German’ body. From Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, who sketched the first national and patriotic movement system in Die deutsche Turnkunst 1816, to dance master Franz Anton Roller, gymnastics teacher Adolf Spiess, and dance gurus Rudolf von Laban and Mary Wigman, it will demonstrate how the distinction between dance and gymnastics was constantly re-negotiated; and it argues that twentieth-century Modern Dance developed out of nineteenth-century Turnen and gymnastics. Dance intended to revolutionise German society physically and aesthetically and incorporated spatial concepts and movement sequences that gymnastics systems had already explored. Through their conceptions of motion in time and space, dance and gymnastics created a modern and revolutionary physical practice for the German nation.

Skabardonis and Dowling recommended updated Bureau of Public Road speed-flow curves for freeways and signalized arterials to improve the accuracy of speed estimates used in transportation demand models. These updated curves generally involved the use of higher power functions that show relatively little sensitivity to volume changes until demand exceeds capacity, when the predicted speed drops abruptly to a very low value. Skabardonis and Dowling demonstrated that the curves provide improved estimates of vehicle speeds under both uncongested and queueing conditions; however, they did not investigate the impact of these curves on the performance of travel demand models. Practitioners have been concerned about the impacts of such abrupt speed-flow curves on the performance of their travel demand models. Spiess has stated that higher power functions are more difficult computationally for computers to evaluate and that more abrupt speed-flow curves adversely affect the rate of convergence to equilibrium solutions in the traffic assignment process. In this paper the impact of the Skabardonis and Dowling updated speed-flow curves on the performance of selected travel demand models is investigated. The updated speed-flow curves were found to significantly increase travel demand model run times. However, it is demonstrated that an alternative speed-flow equation developed by Akçelik has similar or better accuracy and provides much superior convergence properties during the traffic assignment process. The Akçelik curve significantly reduced travel demand model run times.

History and Present Time of Physical EducationThe first mention of standards for physical education in Slovakia refers to the Ratio education reform. This took effect on the territory of Hungary since 1777. Caring for physical education was one of the aims of the school. The requirement of compulsory school physical education is raised the first time by the poet Jan Kollar. Another Hungarian reform in the mid-19th century included physical education among the optional subjects, and this subject is taught in some cities. Physical education became a compulsory subject in 1868. Physical education was taught according to the Spiess system and the hours were for more classes or somewhere just for boys. Physical education teachers have been trained since 1871 in Budapest. A significant promoter of physical education was Ivan Branislav Zoch, author of the first Slovak textbook on physical education (1873). The level of physical education increased after the formation of Czechoslovakia in 1918. Physical education was a compulsory subject in schools other than universities (since 1938). Since 1939, in Slovakia the future teachers of physical education were trained in the Physical Education Institute of the Slovak University. The Physical Education Institute underwent a number of organizational changes. In 1960 it was converted into the Institute of Physical Education and Sports, Comenius University in Bratislava, and its direct successor is the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, Comenius University in Bratislava. Beyond this, the physical education teachers are also trained in other institutions in Slovakia.

Sind digitale Spiele Dinge? Die Materialität des Digitalen wird in der Theorie insbesondere von hardware- und softwareorientierten Strömungen jeweils unterschiedlich aufgegriffen. Die umfassend aufgearbeitete Geschichte des Spiels Doom gibt dabei jedoch Hinweise darauf, dass die Frage nach seiner Dinghaftigkeit nicht allein wegen seiner multiplen Materialisierungen, sondern vor allem wegen seiner Fluidität und der nicht ziehbaren Grenzen seiner Produktions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte mit Verweis auf seine Soft- oder Hardware alleine nicht zu beantworten ist. Deshalb wird im vorliegenden Beitrag unter Berücksichtigung des Agentiellen Realismus nach Karen Barad der Vorschlag unterbreitet, die Produktion und das Spielen digitaler Spiele wie Doom als Teile eines Apparats zu verstehen. Dabei ist weder der Prozess des Schaffens digitaler Spiele noch der ihres Spielens als Interaktion digitaler Dinge mit menschlichen Akteuren zu verstehen; vielmehr gehen diese aus vielfältigen Intraaktionen in einem Möglichkeits- bzw. Unmöglichkeitsraum erst hervor und gewinnen hier ihre Differenz zueinander. Kreatives Schaffen sowie die Spielbarkeit selbst stellen Qualitäten dieser intraaktiven Beziehungen dar. Bei Spiele-Apparaten handelt es sich aus dieser Perspektive um nicht fest eingrenzbare Sets an materiell-diskursiven Verschränkungen, die sich fortwährend immer wieder in medialen Dingen niederschlagen.

Ein internetbasierendes Simulationsspiel zu ökologisch-ökonomischen Konsequenzen des Konsumverhaltens im Ernährungsbereich wurde entwickelt, um ökologische Lern-inhalte spielerisch und anschaulich zu vermitteln. In einem Experiment erhielten 12 Schulklassen Unterricht zu Umweltfolgen des Nahrungsmittelkonsums, 6 Klassen mit Anwendung des SimUlme Spiels (experimentelle Bedingung), 6 Klassen ohne (Vergleichsbedingung). Verständlichkeit, aktive Selbstbeteiligung und Interessantheit des Unterrichts wurden von den Schülerinnen und Schülern in der experimentellen Bedingung signifikant höher eingeschätzt als in der Vergleichsbedingung. Der Tendenz nach erreichte der Unterricht mit SimUlme zudem stärkere positive Veränderungen von Einstellungen im Ernährungsbereich. Das Wissen wurde in beiden Bedingungen verbessert, aber in unterschiedlichem Ausmass hinsichtlich verschiedener, sich ergänzender Aspekte. Die Ergebnisse sprechen für die Anwendung geeigneter Internet-Spiele im Schulunterricht.
