In [1], Connes presented axioms governing noncommutative geometry. He went on to claim that when specialised to the commutative case, these axioms recover spin or spinc geometry depending on whether the geometry is "real" or not. We attempt to flesh out the details of Connes' ideas. As an illustration we present a proof of his claim, partly extending the validity of the result to pseudo-Riemannian spin manifolds. Throughout we are as explicit and elementary as possible.

The symmetry SU(2) and its geometric Bloch Sphere rendering have been successfully applied to the study of a single qubit (spin-1/2); however, the extension of such symmetries and geometries to multiple qubits—even just two—has been investigated far less, despite the centrality of such systems for quantum information processes. In the last two decades, two different approaches, with independent starting points and motivations, have been combined for this purpose. One approach has been to develop the unitary time evolution of two or more qubits in order to study quantum correlations; by exploit

AbstractThe spin Hall effect of light, associated with spin-orbit interactions, describes a transport phenomenon with optical spin-dependent splitting, leading to a plethora of applications such as sensing, imaging, and spin-controlled nanophotonics. Although geometric meatsurfaces can mimic photonic spin Hall effect by spatially splitting left-hand circularly polarized and right-hand circularly polarized states of electromagnetic waves with anomalous refraction or reflection angles, the geometric phase generated by metasurfaces hinders metalenses to realize simultaneous focusing of different

A general formalism of the relation between geometric phases produced by circularly evolving interacting spin systems and their criticality behaviour is presented. This opens up the way for the use of geometric phases as a tool to probe regions of criticality without having to undergo a quantum phase transition. As a concrete example, a spin-1/2 chain with XY interactions is considered and the corresponding geometric phases are analysed. Finally, a generalization of these results to the case of an arbitrary spin system is presented.

We calculate the geometric phase for different open systems (spin-boson and spin-spin models). We study not only how they are corrected by the presence of the different type of environments but also discuss the appearence of decoherence effects. These should be taken into account when planning experimental setups to study the geometric phase in the nonunitary regime. We propose a model with slow decoherence rate in which the geometric phase is still modified and might be measured.

This thesis investigates the gradient flow of Dirac-harmonic maps. Dirac-harmonic maps are critical points of an energy functional that is motivated from supersymmetric field theories. The critical points of this energy functional couple the equation for harmonic maps with spinor fields. At present, many analytical properties of Dirac-harmonic maps are known, but a general existence result is still missing. In this thesis the existence question is studied using the evolution equations for a regularized version of Dirac-harmonic maps. Since the energy functional for Dirac-harmonic maps is unb
