Perhaps the oldest approach is to intervene in the secondary pathophysiological phenomena that follow the acute event. This suggests that by reducing the progression of destructive vascular changes, free-radical-associated autodestruction of cord parenchyma, cicatrix formation, etc., one might preserve functions normally lost.
