Razovsky, Helaine. "Remaking the Bible: English Reformation Spiritual Conduct Books." Renaissance and Reformation 34, no. 4 (October 1, 1998): 5–25. http://dx.doi.org/10.33137/rr.v34i4.10799.

Abstract:
Among the thousands of devotional works produced in the centuries following the English Reformation are hundreds that may be called spiritual conduct books. This article defines the term "spiritual conduct book" on the basis of a text's purpose and audience. Unlike more familiar secular conduct books, such as Castiglione's Book of the Courtier, spiritual conduct books place success in the next world above success in this world. This group of books, although derived from the Bible and from biblical commentary, also reflects secular interests, including class conflicts.

Abstract:
AbstractTwo books, one by M. Kapstein, the other a joint effort headed up by E. Steinkellner, raise questions of the study of Indian philosophy, Buddhism and Confucianism. Although the two books were published eight years apart, they share a comparative perspective of and a reflection on the possibility of philosophy in Asia and Buddhism. The present review article first offers general considerations on the aims of authors with a brief survey of each article contributed to the second book. It then addresses various issues raised by Kapstein's discussions.

Zagorodnyuk, N. I. "Prison libraries of Tobolsk province in the XIX century." Bibliosphere, no. 4 (December 30, 2018): 70–74. http://dx.doi.org/10.20913/1815-3186-2018-4-70-74.

Abstract:
The article objective is to trace the process of prison libraries formation and features of their functioning in the XIX century under conditions of changing the Russian penitentiary system evidently for Tobolsk province. The first mention of the libraries is at the beginning of the XIX century. The author shows the book functioning process under prison conditions, its role in prisoners’ life, the first libraries formation as repositories of books and their activity, features of the educational work forms, relationship with the church and school. The initiative of distributing books of spiritual content among prisoners belongs to the church. The Bible Society played a certain role distributing the Bible and St. Scripture at the early XIX century everywhere, including prisons. At the initial stage libraries have been formed at prison churches, which book collections included literature of spiritual and moral content. Opening schools, the book collections got fiction, popular scientific literature on natural sciences and humanities. At the late XIX century every prison castle had own library working in close connection with the church: reading, conversations of spiritual and moral content, loud reading books by literate prisoners. Besides, the book performed leisure functions, contributed to the individual socialization.

Boucher, Geoff M., and Charlotte Devonport-Ralph. "Philip Pullman and Spiritual Quest." Literature 2, no. 1 (February 8, 2022): 26–39. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/literature2010002.

Full text
Abstract:
The polarized initial reception of Philip Pullman as a “new atheist” has gradually yielded to more nuanced scholarly positionings of his work as inspired by a heterodox, even “heretical,” Christianity. But in his new series, Pullman responds decisively to both “new atheist” and “heterodox Christian” interpretations, while widening the scope of his critical representations beyond Christian—indeed, beyond Abrahamic—religion. What emerges in the completed books of the incomplete new series, The Book of Dust, is a “secret commonwealth” of supernatural beings inhabiting multiple universes. These are all manifestations of Dust, the spiritual sentience of matter itself, which provides the basis for mystical visions and shamanistic beliefs, as well as religious orthodoxies. Rejecting the latter for the former, the second book in particular, The Secret Commonwealth, suggests an endorsement of spiritual quest. To motivate acceptance of this interpretation, we begin by reviewing the critical reception of His Dark Materials, especially in relation to its theological implications. After that, we turn to the representation of reductionist positions in The Book of Dust, especially the authors presented in The Secret Commonwealth, Gottfried Brande and Simon Talbot. Then, we investigate the representation of the Abrahamic religions in that work, intrigued less by the obvious parallels between Pullman’s imaginary religions and Christianity and Islam, than by his positive representation of mysticism. Finally, we examine his representations of shamanism and animism, soul belief and hermetic doctrines, and his allusions to Zoroastrianism, before summing up. Pullman is an a-theist in the sense of being without a god, not in the post-Enlightenment sense of a rejection of the supernatural/spiritual. His imaginary universe celebrates spiritual quest and ontological multiplicity, against all forms of speculative closure.

Abstract:
Tuhfah Al-Maudūd Bi Ahkāmi Al-Maulūd is one of the books of Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah which discusses different issues compared to other works. This article examines spiritual education written by Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah in his book. This study is interesting to do, since the focus of education mostly only penetrated the intellectual intelligence and emotional intelligence, while spiritual intelligence still has not received intense attention in education. Then the study of this book is still not much done in terms of spiritual education. This study is a literature study with the primary source of the book Tuhfah Al-Maudūd Bi Ahkāmi Al-Maulūd and other supporting books of Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah. The theory that the writer uses here is from Islamic education theory written by Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas and Ramayulis, then about the sprititual intelligence of Ary Ginanjar Agustian and Danah Zohar-Ian Marshall. Based on the theory, Ibn Qayyim views that education is ta'dib, which represents the good of the body and the ruhaniyah. Spiritual intelligence is the first thing parents notice, from before birth until delivery. The educational environment should be designed to avoid bad images, noise, and action that could endanger the child's comfort.

Abstract:
The context of ethnoscience-based learning in the Merdeka curriculum is related to socio-cultural studies. Following up on the uncommon science learning integrated with ethnoscience studies, especially in the socio-cultural realm, a content analysis of textbooks used in schools was conducted. This study aims to determine the potential of junior high school science learning using the Merdeka curriculum integrated into ethnoscience studies in the socio-cultural aspect. The research was conducted using the content analysis method, with the analyzed indicators consisting of 5 parts of values in socio-cultural. The results showed that science learning has great potential to be integrated with ethnoscience studies, considering that the textbooks have been able to present all value indicators in the socio-cultural. All indicators have been contained in the book in each chapter, except for spiritual value incarcerates. The appearance of all indicators in each chapter in the book provides information on the suitability of textbooks with the aim of curriculum. However, spiritual value indicators are still contained in only 2 chapters in the book, so it is necessary to strengthen spiritual values in each chapter in the book. Further research can be done by conducting content analysis with a more diverse number of books, so as to provide a broader picture of textbooks
