Ng, Ping-yi Doris, and 吳冰怡. "Psycho-spiritual factors of stress-related growth." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50700777.

Full text
Abstract:
Psycho-religious factors of posttraumatic growth (PTG) had been widely studied, yet only a few studies had examined the psycho-spiritual factors with stress-related growth (SRG). In order to measure spirituality locally, Study One explored the validity of the Spiritual Transcendence Scale (STS) (Piedmont, 2004) in a 415 adult students sample. Results of the study supported the internal consistency reliability of the overall STS and its concurrent validity with the Religious subscale of the Social Axioms Scale (Leung, Lam, Bond, Conway, Gornick, Amponash et al., 2012) and the Faith Maturity Scale (short-form) (Hui, Ng, Mok, Lau, & Cheung, 2011). Contrary to our prediction, the three-factor structure of the original STS was not supported in Hong Kong population. In accord with previous studies on psycho-religious factors of PTG (for example, Stanton, Bower & Low, 2006), age, gender, personality and spirituality were hypothesized to predict SRG in context of academic stress in Study Two. A total of 182 adult student samples were recruited. Results of the study only supported that spirituality as well as extraverted and agreeable in personalities predicted SRG, but not the other measured variables. Besides, age was the only variable moderated the relationship between academic stress and SRG as hypothesized. Last but not least, consistent with previous studies by Kleim and Ehlers (2010) and our hypothesis, a curvilinear relationship between SRG and depressive symptom was supported. Findings of the present study shed light to clinicians about the conceptualization of SRG and direction for potential psychological treatment.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University

This dissertation theoretically examines and empirically tests relationships between trauma and spirituality. Many clinicians observe a deterioration of religious or spiritual beliefs or worldviews in their clients in the wake of trauma. Empirical studies, however, have produced equivocal results: trauma leads to both spiritual growth and decline. The dissertation surveyed definitions of and approaches to religion, spirituality, and trauma, as well as theories of worldview and world assumptions. It identified variables that include benevolence beliefs about people and the world, transcendent benevolence beliefs, time elapsed since the trauma and the type of trauma experienced. Taking into account religious or spiritual beliefs prior to the trauma, the dissertation asked, how does trauma, operationalized as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, relate to spiritual growth and decline? Participants were recruited from Boston area local trauma clinics and internet support groups. Participants (n=144) completed an online survey about their trauma history, PTSD symptoms, world assumptions, changes in spirituality, and demographics. Path analysis initially reported the theorized model did not adequately represent the relationships found in the data. The model was modified to reflect theoretically sound relationships, and achieved adequate fit. The final model suggested that, at least for individuals who have experienced significant, interpersonal, violent trauma, PTSD is associated with greater decline in spirituality than growth. The large percentage of individuals in this sample (98%) with violent trauma histories made it difficult to draw any conclusions about changes in spirituality in relation to trauma in general. The mediating role of benevolence beliefs with regard to spiritual growth and decline is reported. Type of trauma and time elapsed since the trauma are also discussed. Finally, positive findings related to the importance of religious or spiritual beliefs prior to the trauma are considered. Overall, results suggest that most people who suffer violent trauma tend to experience spiritual decline rather than growth, and it appears benevolence beliefs partially mediate this relationship. This study demonstrates that integrating spiritual issues into the counseling relationship, e.g., a sense of trust in people, the world, or the divine, is an important aspect of trauma recovery therapy. Implications for incorporating spiritual themes are discussed.

Fryar, Benjamin Trevor. "Describing Spiritual Growth in an Online Religious Education Course: A Phenomenological Perspective." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5511.

Abstract:
An estimated 33% of all college students take at least one online class (Allen & Seaman, 2013). Online classes are offered across a wide range of domains, including courses designed for spiritual development. Little research exists examining students' experiences in these types of classes. The purpose of this research is to help address this gap by describing the phenomenon of spiritual growth in an online religious education course. Brigham Young University-Idaho (BYU-Idaho) offers online courses designed to help students grow spiritually. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten students who took one of these classes and who reported positive gains in spirituality as a result of the course on an end-of-course survey. Interviews focused on two major ideas: First, how did students describe the difference between previous face-to-face religious education experiences and their experience in the online course? Second, what elements of the online course encouraged spiritual growth? Ideas from each interview were combined to create some key observations and a potential model for online religious education that reflects these observations. Findings suggest participants took a great deal of ownership of their own spiritual journey. The online course encouraged this through a curriculum that was flexible enough for students to explore, yet at the same time provided a structured environment for growth. Reflection through writing appeared to be important for students' success. Participants felt online instructors played a less prominent role in their spiritual journey than face-to-face instructors. The online course appeared to change the traditional role of the instructor from one who provides direct instruction into one who acts more as a guide and a facilitator. Interactions between students appeared to have minimal impact on spiritual growth as this particular course was designed, but some interviews suggest this is an area for potential impact.

Wong, Luke L. S. "Validity and Reliability Study of the Bridges 7-Stage Spiritual Growth Questionnaire (BSG-Q)." Thesis, Nyack College, Alliance Theological Seminary, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13425929.

Full text
Abstract:

This doctoral project was developed to evaluate the validity and reliability of a spiritual growth assessment tool that the author created for his ministry in Southeast Asia called the Bridge or BRIDGES. This tool called the BRIDGES Spiritual Growth Questionnaire (BSG-Q) is helpful for church leaders who intend on implementing The Bridge’s 7-Stage Discipleship Strategy in determining the spiritual stage of their church members. Fifty volunteers at the Bridge were recruited to complete the BSG-Q. To study the validity of the BSG-Q, the three basic and traditional components of validity (criterion-related validity, content validity, and construct validity) were applied. Nine small group leaders at the Bridge were recruited to help assess the criterion-related validity by completing a criterion assessment form. Five experts concerning the Bridge’s 7-Stage strategy were recruited to help assess the content validity by completing a content assessment form. Construct validity was assessed by referencing published authors. To study the reliability of the BSG-Q, the test-retest method and the split-halves method were applied. The accumulated data from all the questionnaires and tests and the analysis of the data confirmed the hypothesis of this project: “The BSG-Q is a valid and reliable tool in determining a person’s level or stage of spiritual growth within the 7- Stage strategy.” This project also enabled the author to make some critical discoveries in how to interpret the scores of BSG-Q participants resulting in important recommendations for church leaders who intend on using this tool.
