Abstract:
This article highlights the importance of spiritual pilgrims’ pre-travel experiences and belief in the divine spirit to fulfil their spiritual journey. We explore the experiences of travellers who visited the Naga Cave and sought spiritual help to fulfil their desires. We used netnography to collect travellers’ stories to reveal the importance of seeking spiritual help and sharing experiences on Facebook to promote the sacredness of Phu Aue Lue and the Naga Cave. Some travellers cleanse their spirits before the trip using meditation, prayer, adhering to the five Buddhist precepts, and going vegetarian. Physical fitness is also crucial, as the 1,400 metres of the extremely taxing trail in the cave demands four to five hours of hiking. Spiritual tourism offers an opportunity for psychological recovery post-COVID-19, and spiritual destinations with folkloric overtones, such as the Naga Cave, are expected to increase in prominence among spiritual and general tourists due to their inherent healing properties. Additionally, the tourism authority may employ further marketing and promotional initiatives to promote Naga Cave as a sustainable tourist destination. The use of mass media for communication has been of interest in recent years, with studies examining the use of new media by individuals and the significance of Naga in Thai architectural and sculptural ornaments.

Abstract:
Paranormal tourism is a lucrative market offering visitors the opportunity to engage with enchanting experiences and stories in destinations around the world. Specifically, ghost tourism connects people to the dead (and death) through dark narratives, supernatural legends, and participatory experiences. Previous scholarship has suggested that ghost tourism exhibits characteristics of dark tourism (by visiting dark places) and spiritual tourism (by engaging in spiritual practices); however, this relationship has not been fully explored. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to consider where the experiential and motivational characteristics of dark, spiritual, and paranormal tourism converge, and to consider whether this convergence produces a dark spiritual experience for consumers. Three dimensions are identified as contributing towards the degree of dark experience offered by ghost tourism: place, promotion and production, and participation. To conclude, a Dark Spiritual Experience Spectrum is proposed, illustrating the characteristics of each dimension and their influence on the degree of dark spiritual experience offered to consumers. It is argued that these dimensions have the potential to impact the tourist experience, influence visitor motivations, and, consequently, drive an evolving paranormal market.

Abstract:
Abstract Spiritual tourism is becoming one of the trends in Bali. Many people are currently promoting spiritual tourism. Starting from the private sector as well as under the management of tourist villages or customary villages. One of the popular ones is melukat, which is generally done by bathing in a water source that they consider sacred. Although spiritual tourism has been managed and supervised, it sometimes comes with risks. There have been several instances of visitors breaking the rules in sacred places. For example, they were climbing onto a pelinggih (shrine). Customary villages in Bali have the authority to manage and develop tourist villages through Baga Utsaha Padruwen Desa Adat (BUPDA). As with official villages, customary villages can manage tourist villages by utilizing the potential of their area. One of them is spiritual tourism. In terms of regulations, the Bali Provincial Government has tried to provide a legal umbrella related to tourism management to customary villages. However, this is not enough. Customary villages, both in terms of institutions and communities, can strengthen their role if they can manage tourist attractions in their area. One of the important things in this case is the formation and strengthening of the quality of Human Resources (HR). In spiritual tourism management, customary villages need to have reliable human resources. Of course, to procure quality human resources requires a lot of money. Especially if recruiting professionals in their fields. However, following the spirit of gilik-saguluk (togetherness), salunglung sabayantaka (cooperation), and sareng-sareng (participation) owned by indigenous villages, quality human resources can be formed through the empowerment of krama (community members) of indigenous villages who can manage tourism, based on education and experience. On the other hand, some cases involving visitors to sacred places in Bali are certainly detrimental to customary villages, both institutionally and as a community. This relates to the impact caused, when inappropriate things are done in sacred places, for example climbing or sitting on pelinggih, doing damage, and so on. Although the customary village has made efforts to supervise cases have recurred. Therefore, customary villages or managers cannot work alone in terms of this supervision. The involvement of security forces is needed. The customary village already has pecalang who is in charge of security. However, pecalang must also be supported through training by involving related institutions, such as the police. This research addressed three issues: 1) How is the authority of customary villages in Bali in the management of tourism in the region? 2) How is the strategy to strengthen the role of customary villages in the management of spiritual tourism? 3) What are the efforts of customary villages in monitoring spiritual tourism in their area? The purpose of writing the article is to examine the authority of customary villages in tourism management, strengthening the role of customary villages in spiritual tourism management, and supervision of spiritual tourism in their area. The method used is qualitative through a literature research. Data is collected from previous literature that discusses spiritual tourism and the role of customary villages and then analyzed. Abstract:
Traditional Siangan Traditional Village can be found 31 kilometers northeast of Denpasar City. As a spiritual tourism village, this village has cultural potential that can be developed. Seven ancient sites, natural beauty, local art, and cultural traditions can all be used as tourist attractions in Siangan Traditional Village. The indigenous village krama community has not fully appreciated the potential of existing cultural heritage to be used as a starting point for spiritual tourism. To support the tourism growth of Siangan Village, community empowerment is needed to inventory heritage in the form of cultural artifacts and their use as tourist attractions. Yayasan Sentir Bali as a partner in the Community Partnership Program (PKM) is expected to be able to face the following problems: (1) the inventory of all cultural heritage in Siangan Traditional Village, (2) the historical background of cultural heritage in Siangan Village, and (3) the unused cultural heritage as a spiritual tourism base. By conducting an inventory of cultural heritage in Siangan Traditional Village and managing cultural heritage as a tourist attraction, this PKM is a form of community empowerment in the use of cultural heritage. Structuring as a foundation for spiritual tourism. Archaeological documentation techniques and public archaeology approaches are used in the implementation of cultural heritage management models. Partners together with communities will recognize the importance of cultural heritage as the foundation of spiritual tourism, which has implications for goodness-being a community, as a result of this strategy.

Abstract:
Tourism and pilgrimage have been said to be closely related1. However, the relationship between tourists and the religions and religious contexts they visit has been neglected. Why tourists travel to places of religious significance and how they conceive of their travels are important questions to both the study of tourism and of religion. This thesis is particularly concerned with those tourists who engage in religious practice or have some form of spiritual experience in a religious context. These I am tentatively calling ‘spiritual tourists’. What the study of their experiences can yield is information on the nature of touristic experiences and the position of religion within society. These patterns are conspicuously played out in the context of travel writing, where stories of personal transformation and self discovery can often seem the standard.

Frost, Madeleine G. B. "Online meditations : an autoethnographic study of spiritual tourism in the liquid internet age." Thesis, University of York, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3987/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1912 Émile Durkheim asserted that the “cult” of religion “periodically recreates itself” (Durkheim, 1912, p. 312) by which he meant that the way humanity expresses its religions evolves as the world does, in order that they may continue to be relevant. A century later, in a period which is significantly influenced by the advent of technologies such as the internet, and which has been characterised by Zygmunt Bauman as “liquid modernity” (2000), it is perhaps not surprising that we might question how religious beliefs and practices may manifest themselves in contemporary social life. This thesis is an autoethnographic study which compares online and offline expressions of spirituality in order to question whether the ‘liquid internet age’ – an age of impermanence and individualisation - influences the way that we engage with religion and spirituality through the emergence of spiritual tourism; and whether the internet can truly offer us a viable and authentic environment in which to explore and express our spirituality. Given that autoethnography is still an emerging methodology, it also questions what the pros and cons of using autoethnography to explore online/offline spiritual tourism are. Ultimately, this thesis concludes that the emergence of a liquid society provides the social conditions fostering the need for greater self-creation of identity - including spiritual identity; and that the liquid internet age is facilitating a period in which the “cult” of religion is indeed recreating itself by encouraging the emergence of spiritual tourism. It also concludes that autoethnography is an effective methodology for the study of spiritual tourism, and aims to prove this point by finishing with a creative interpretation of the findings which will – it is hoped - expose them more fully and stimulate thought and questions about the issues at hand in the mind of the reader.

Abstract:
This thesis presents my findings on the Peruvian spiritual tourism industry in both Cusco and Iquitos, based on six weeks of fieldwork during Summer 2005. New Age and Peruvian spiritual belief systems have converged to form current Andean mystical and Amazonian shamanic practices. Increasing numbers of foreign tourists, whether believers in the New Age or not, are coming to gain a deeper understanding of these spiritual belief systems through participation in sacred rituals and ceremonies. The effects of such tourism are similar to other cultural tourism industries, such as increased competition, matters of authenticity, and performance of culture. Other issues are more specific to the spiritual tourism industry, such as the physical and sexual exploitation of tourists. But there are also many positive outcomes of this spiritual interchange, such as individual physical, mental, and emotional healing.

It deals with German tourism market and its segments of cultural and spiritual tourism, as well as with potential of Luther Decade for tourism. It characterizes meaning of Luther Decade for Germany and the worldwide effect of reformation and presents the organizational structure of Luther Decade. It defines potential of Luther Decade for tourism of three German countries: Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, using SWOT analysis. The outcome of the thesis is that the effect of Luther Decade on visit rate in German tourism cannot be proved, because of missing statistical data. Luther Decade is a contribution for tourism due to financial investment in tourism infrastructure and sights reconstruction. It also has a positive impact on Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt who received most of the financial resources and who are being promoted at home and abroad. Abstract:
The main aim is to define the concept of religious tourism in order to understand the complex nature of this phenomenon. Firstly, we analyze the concept of sacred, and especially the relationship with sacred spaces as main areas receiving religious tourism. The concept of the sacred is a universal phenomenon, but it is represented differently according to the religious tradition it belongs, so there is also a local component. The second term studied is tourism. From this point of view, we explore the concept of religious tourism but also other types of tourism in sacred spaces such as pilgrimages, spiritual tourism and cultural tourism. The conclusion reached is a model based on sacred spaces that relates the different motivations of visitors. It identifies some ideal type that let us suggest some management actions in order to avoid conflicts that may arise between the devotees and tourists in sacred spaces.

Abstract:
Spiritual tourism also known as one type of special interest tourism activity based on the expectations related with spirituality is now continuously developing and is being demanded by tourists. This demand is in line with the improvement of tourist information technology. Spiritual tourism will continuously develop due to the changes in the needs of the market. Initially, spiritual activities are directly connected with religion, and they have now shifted to the idea to something that is related with spiritual activities which include, creating comfort, pleasure and quality experience. Despite of the rapid development, it can be seen in the academic writing research, in which, there are still several researchers who argued religious and spiritual tourism as the same type of tourism. The phenomenon of religious spiritual tourism is more complex in the modern era and has been recognised as a separate tourism. Internationalising religious spiritual tourism in the context of people, places, and events has become a challenge. Religious spiritual tourism requires a new mode as a form of quality tourism development so that it will organise sociocultural life with varieties of unique customs and become a tool to increase regional income, creating job opportunities and indirectly improve Malaysians’ quality of life. Thus, there is an urge to integrate the religious aspect into spiritual tourism. Hence, this research aims to develop an Islamic Spiritual Tourism Model (ISToM) based on Maqasid As Shariah. It is hoped that the findings will contribute to the existing knowledge about values and provide implications for developing spiritual tourism sustainably.

Abstract:
English texts are often deliberately enveloped with mysticism to arouse curiosity of the foreign tourists, whereas the Hindi texts remind the readers about the religious and cultural heritage. The culture-specific terms related to these places have not been translated successfully in the English texts, which provide the readers a half-baked spiritual and cultural view of the places. This paper analyzes and compares the English and Hindi texts describing and promoting two significant religious and spiritual tourist places of Uttar Pradesh, India, viz., Mathura-Vrindavan and Varanasi, by taking data from the website of UP tourism department. I compare the speech act strategies and presuppositions of the texts, and find a significant difference in the strategy taken for persuading the tourists in these two languages as well as in the pragmatic presuppositions associated with the texts.

Abstract:
This paper presents a scientific analysis of the topic of interpretation of intangible heritage in tourism – through the myth of the arrival of the Slavs. By planned design, myth becomes a real tourist attraction. Embarking from the postulates of the paper, we try to explain the importance of the local community for the interpretation of the intangible heritage and of establishing a sustainable system of its interpretation. The paper makes an effort to emphasize and prove the exceptional relevance of animation for the shaping and developing of a tourist product. Interdisciplinary features of the paper impose the use of recent sources from a variety of scientific fields and disciplines (archaeology, anthropology, phylology, cultural creative tourism, economy of experience). This entire paper has features of a scientific review which mostly uses desk method and deconstruction analysis aimed at intangible heritage and interpretative capacities in animation, within the economy of experience. The process of interpretation, which includes recognition and shaping or 'packaging', converts the myth into a tourist product. This packaging is not a mere cosmetic process which would help improve the product or simplify it. Interpretation is actually the essence, or the basic content of the product, which is sold in order to enrich the tourist offer by traditional elements which, in a large measure, form base of the national and regional identity. The contribution of this paper is the animation model for the interpretation of intangible heritage in a tourist destination of cultural tourism, which gives guidelines for the interpretation and formulation of intangible heritage for tourist purposes at a more subtle and higher level, outside the hitherto known frame of predictable and familiar processes. This model indicates the way to interpret the myth and to recognize and register its particular parts through the system, in the space, as local, regional and national attraction, which is illustrated by the example of 'holy geography'. A special contribution is in the change of paradigm, where it is shown that a tourist area can be interpreted in a novel, original way, as a spiritual resource for tourists visiting the area, and for the local population.
