Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research is to determine how we can better accompany and serve children through their spiritual development, especially within the congregational context. Many studies on children’s spiritual development have been done, but misperceptions and preconceived ideas about children’s spiritual abilities and development still exist. In this study, an attempt is made to address some of these misperceptions and preconceived ideas and so attain a richer conceptual understanding of children’s spiritual development. This is done on the basis of the question: How can we understand children’s development better and what are the implications for children’s ministry? This research firstly examines the conceptual and definitive understanding of children’s spiritual development. The research section indicates that spirituality is an inherent part of every person’s life. This inherent spirituality develops in the course of a person’s life. Definitions for childhood spirituality concurs with the general definitions for spirituality, but terms such as “develop” or “grow” are added. The study also addresses children’s spiritual development as a deepening or enhancement of the awareness of the transcendental and relational kinship with others, the self, and the world, and not as a linear or chronological development process. The research secondly examines the historical and contemporary perspectives on children’s spiritual development. In the light of historical perspectives, the research discusses the emphasis that is mistakenly put on cognitive development as spiritual development in children. The limitedness of the phases theory sent the research in the direction of finding and forming a richer picture of children’s spiritual development. The context, the universal nature of development and a collective approach are indicated as factors that play a role in the spiritual development of children. Thirdly, the research examines which theological thoughts on children’s spiritual development can be regarded as appropriate theological grounds for children’s ministry within a congregational context. Current children’s ministry models are critically evaluated and the necessity of change is indicated. Some ministry models are suggested as being more effective, as they represent a holistic and inclusive approach to children’s ministry. The consolidated thought from this study can be formulated as follows: Children’s ministry is a comprehensive ministry that is directed at the total being of children and their needs. Children’s ministry should pose opportunities for children to develop spiritually through thought, reflection, experience and action. When these four moments are present simultaneously, children develop a commitment to practicing a sustained and lifelong spirituality. It is of critical importance that children’s ministry is applied purposefully, and the purpose of children’s ministries should be formulated on a theological foundation.

Full text"The Puritans and the Spiritual Foundation of the United States of America" answers this question: does the work of the Puritans constitute the only spiritual foundation of the United States of America? On the one hand, this study highlights the topical issue of identity, rising from the search of the origins. On the second hand, it makes it possible to see how, from a spiritual and ideological marginalisation, those men, the Puritans, passed from a myth quite far away from historical reality but recovered ail the same for precise political objectives in the current United States. The thesis develops around the three following axes: first of ail the setting in light of the origins of Puritanism. Starting from the 15th century, a vast movement had upset the spiritual climate in Europe and was to lead to the emigration of Puritans in the New World. The second axis analyzes the way these men put in place the components of an economic and political organization influenced by puritan ideology through the English colony symbol, New England. But Puritanism cou Id not indefinitely resist numerous internaI and external conflicts added to continuous waves of immigration. The third axis thus treats the decline of this movement vis-a-vis the spiritual explosion that preceded the signature of the Declaration of Independence; it analyzes the party that sorne politicians having adopted ideologies not exclusively Christian would draw from it. An effervescence, influenced by the philosophy of the Lights, was going thus to contribute to the birth of a national spirit and to the drafting of the fust constitution of the United States of America

Full textThis dissertation on the Fourth Spiritual Alphabet (aka Law of Love) by the Andalusian Franciscan brother Francisco de Osuna consists of two parts. The analysis of the book and of the doctrinal issues it raises is followed by an annotated edition of the text, starting at the princeps of 1530. This spirituality treatise about divine love and human love is theological rather than mystical. It was written in Castilian in order to reach a public as large as possible, and more specifically intended for preachers for doctrinal propaganda purposes. The analysis sets the book back in the immediate context of its writing – Castilla in the second half of the 1520’s – and shows how this work took a stance in the spiritual debate on the pure love doctrine marked by the alumbrados trial in Toledo. We show how Francisco de Osuna strives to reject or correct the excesses of the spiritual theories on divine love designed by the dejados, who are ubiquitous in the Law of Love through more or less implicit allusions, and how he defends the mystical principles of his own spiritual doctrine: the recogimiento (“recollection”). The annotated edition aims at making this rich but relatively unknown text accessible to 21st century readers through a modernizing translation and an exhaustive critical apparatus (variants, textual and lexical difficulties, biblical, philosophical and patristical sources, theological and spiritual concepts, historical and cultural references, etc.)

Full textLewis Carroll’s late works, and his novel Sylvie and Bruno (1889) and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893) in particular have been little studied. Yet Carroll thought of them as his spiritual legacy. The recent publication of many primary sources allows us today to throw a new light on his religious beliefs and on the circumstances of the writing of his works. The genetic study of the modalities of the Carrollian creation and the reconstruction of the genesis of the Sylvie and Bruno books show the primacy of the tabular and the dialogical in his creative process. The study of his library and of his reading testify to his deep intellectual involvement in the theological, scientific and university upheavals of the second half of the nineteenth century, and to the way these preoccupations have informed the writing of the Sylvie and Bruno books, whose organisation and contents are shaped by the discoveries of the Higher Criticism, the necessary reappraisal of the status of man in Nature by the evolution theory and the quarrels between the High Church and the Broad Church movements. Far from being a conservative, Carroll had a deep respect for the ideas of Benjamin Jowett and his work betrays the deep religious doubts that tormented him. It is logic and geometry which eventually allow him, in Sylvie and Bruno, to find the allegorical expression of his hope in a divine transcendence

Full textAs global humanist icons, Gandhi, M. L. King Jr. and the Dalai Lama show a common feature : they put religion – seen from its spiritual core – at the heart of their political action. It is then meaningful to single out these spiritual and democratic leaders from the liberal political sphere, where religion and politics tend to be separated, specially in France. Yet, in this country, some political figures of the last century show a kind of family likeness with those original leaders, all of them inspired by Gandhi. Among many others (Péguy, Mounier, S. Weil...), three contemporary philosophers – Socialist J. Jaurès (1859-1914), Neo-Thomist J. Maritain (1882-1973) and Peace activist Lanza del Vasto (1901-1981) – also base their approach on a spiritual ground, in spite of their differences due to their own specific relationship with catholicism, the french predominant religion. Without wandering to historical and biographic details, this doctoral thesis is studying these cases in order to define the ''Spiritual'', which is rarely done. Here, this word is conceptualized as the ''concern of the link with the ultimate reality'' (the Absolute, the Infinite, God for the believers) ; and its objective effects (theoretical and practical) on our ''commited mystics'' are scrutinized, then characterized inside a specific democratic trend. These effects are so decisive that they imply to recognize the ''Spiritual'' as an anthropological category, entailing a simultaneous redifining of the Political and the Religious. The latter, thus being requalified through the ''Spiritual'', can also be admitted in the liberal public sphere, while Political theory can find a new scientific paradigm

Full textOur research examines from a theoretical and critical point of view the contemporary hermeneutics and shows that all comprehension of a text is not necessarily an interpretation. Our study then models a textual non-hermeneutic approach and the innovative concept of the literal meaning and then proposes a rational methodology called The Literal Analysis of the Qur’ân allowing the intratextual resolution of this literal meaning in Qur’ân by the Qur’ân. This algorithm takes into account the totality of the semantic elements and the intratextual and intertextual relations as well as the limits of involving the latter. We have then made a comprehensive analysis of the key terms dîn and islâm in the Qur’ân. The results radically differ from known productions and, besides the implications on the history of the Qur’ân and its real ties with Islam, they reveal novel paradigms of an inclusive qur’anic theology and a new exegetical perspective

Full textFrom the perspective of poetics, the science of the principles of literary forms, the main goal of our study is to enhance the epic sphere in 19th century by studying the structural and thematic development of the heroic genre through the mystical theology. Working from some twenty rare pieces in an abundant corpus (most of them, unfairly forgotten by posterity, are the result of minores), we intend to prove that the epic of the 19thcentury, far from being confined to the classical tradition of the great totemic models from Antiquity, undergoes, after the Revolution, what we consider as a change of paradigm. Moving from a “heroic” epic, referring to Henry Corbin, to a so-called “mystical” epic, influenced by the revaluation of Dante, Milton and Klopstock’s works, the new romantic triad, the epic of the 19th century, supposed to organize society from a founding event, become exclusively prophetic by shifting its perspective from earth to heaven, from politics to metaphysics. Here is to be encountered the keystone of our dissertation, regarding the “critical relation” between literature and mysticism, which demonstrates the evolution of a genre henceforth dedicated to eschatological revelation and reintegration of the fallen soul. Beyond german idealism, we wish to emphasise that the authors of our corpus, educated in the purest catechetical tradition and affected by the new occult and illuminist currents, make the epic no longer a work of war, focused on the historical memory of national battles, but a mystagogic form that draws on mystical concepts to clarify its own running. Related to the revival of mystical studies in Europe since the late 20th century, our subject highlights the dialectic between mysticism, traditionally individual and intimate, and the epic, by global and universal definition, exploring the transformation and limits of the poetic form through the three ways defined by Neo-Platonic theology – purgative, illuminative and unitive– until the ultimate apocatastasis

Full textWhat are the main characteristics of a theology stemming from a mystic experience ? This thesis attempts to answer this question by examining an individual case, that of The Showings of Julian of Norwich (C14th- C15th). The Long Text of this opus enables us to observe a development in the fields of anthropology, Christology and Trinitarian theology. Firmly rooted in her experience of life, Julian’s theological discourse is interwoven with the emotions drawn from that experience. Julian speaks about God in speaking to God and in establishing with her « fellow Christians » an emotional and noetic community. But a mystical experience does not automatically give birth to a mystical theology as understood by Pseudo-Dionysius and Jean Gerson. We are rather in the presence of a prophetical and visionary theology that is fully conscious of its partial, limited, and contextualised nature. We find ourselves at a turning-point in the history of theology and spirituality, which sees the emergence of two separate fields that of scholastic theology and that of spirituality, where previously patristic theology bore witness to a profound unity. The different methodologies used in this research are in the service of a study within two distinct fields : those of theology and the history of spirituality
Underbrink, Mary Clare. ""Le traité des autre mariages" de Jeanne Chézard de Matel (1596-1670) : vers une spiritualité de l'incarnation." Thesis, Lyon 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO30049/document.
Full textThis work is presented in three parts: a critical edition of the “Treatise on the Four Marriages” of Jeanne Chézard de Matel (Roanne 1596 – Paris 1670), a historical-Theological analysis of the treatise, and an exploration of the theological questions on the Incarnation raised in this treatise, giving rise to an incarnational spirituality. The edition of the text presents research on the life of the author (a mystic from the region of Lyon, foundress of the Order of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament), her milieu, her sources, her writings, and her theology, as well as research on the history of the treatise (the manuscript, date of composition, copyist, relationship with the “Treatise on the Three Marriages”, and the sources of its content). The second part analyzes the treatise according to two themes: the reading of Scripture and spiritual marriage. The analysis, keeping in mind the treatise’s historical context and sources, seeks to open a theological reflection on the issues raised in the treatise. The third part puts Jeanne Chézard de Matel in dialogue with contemporary theologians, taking as a common point the current reader’s experience. The study explores the relationship between time and eternity and between Creation, Incarnation and Salvation. The work culminates with the presentation of a spirituality of the Incarnation, understood as an eternal and salvific union of love which binds all humans together with each other and with God

This practical theological study examined the spiritual needs of outpatient palliative care patients. Focus group discussions were conducted with outpatient palliative care teams. They were asked about their experiences and observations. Theoretical foundations of spirituality and palliative care formed the framework for the evaluation of empirical research by using qualitative content analysis. Findings show that recognition of spiritual needs in patients poses a challenge to the majority of team members, as well as insecurities and problems in dealing with them. The observed spirituality is predominantly ecclesiastical and based on Christian elements such as prayers, faith and accompaniment by pastors. Team members address encounters, "being" and music as spiritual dimensions. There are also patients who have no spiritual needs. In future, practical theology could serve as a needs-based provision of competences, so that employees of health systems can be empowered to perceive, reflect on and adequately respond to the spiritual needs of their patients.

Full textOur thesis project is to validate with aging people who have suffered loss, the following research hypothesis: « How the integration of major theories on the spiritual life to the life story tool (in the questionnaire) for the seniors who suffers loss help on the sens which people make of their life?» In this study, we are interested in the problems of ageing, in particular within the Québec framework, specifically regarding the ageing of elders within hemodialysis process in situation of a loss. In the introduction, we will outline the general context behind the project. The report is presented according to the four stages laid down by the method of pastoral praxeology, namely the observation, interpretation, the intervention and the prospective. Firstly, we will introduce the parameters of our observation in our pastoral milieu. We will thus seek to clarify the encountered problem, starting from the questions agreed in pastoral praxeology: the which, the what, the where, the when, the how and the why. Secondly, we will try to meet theoretical interpretations in order to find a new understanding of the drama which is played. Thus, we will stress out that we are indebted to four great theories on the spiritual life as for the framework of reference of our research, namely Oser, Gmünder and Ridez; Vasse; Breton and Liébanas. The third step will be a sort of evaluation of changes to implement in real life, their impacts, the strategies to implement them and the unavoidable resistances generated by them. Lastly, we will wonder about the unconscious visions of the world and human being conveyed by the intervention with an aim of being refit. In this study, we have identified, using the tool of the life story, six aspects of the spiritual life of an elder in a hemodialysis process in situation of a loss, which are the representations or the images of God, the meaning of sin, the signs of the existence of the sin, the anteriority of the love of God compared to the sin, the ways of entry to the spiritual life as well as the indications to grow spiritually and the effects of life and death.

Full textThis thesis is a multidisciplinary approach to the concept of interpersonal forgiveness. Its purpose is to unearth the scope and dynamics of forgiveness, as it seeks to answer the question, Why forgive? Up until recently, there has been a dearth of literature on the subject of forgiveness. Then over the past 20 years, an escalation of psychotherapeutic research on forgiveness started to emerge as psychologists awakened to its healing benefits. Over the same time period, a number of philosophers and theologians also began publishing on the subject. Two hypotheses benchmark the research. The first one concerns the meaning of the second half of the biblical quote, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do,” found in Luke 23:34. This hypothesis claims that the “motive of ignorance” is universal in scope, and purports that the offender is ignorantly unaware of his wrongdoing. Forgiveness of an offense can thus be interpreted as the forgiveness of ignorance. The second hypothesis claims that interpersonal forgiveness can be understood as a spiritual dynamic, but with the loosening of its religious ties. We believe the forgiveness–spirituality relationship to be a significant one, and that a deeper understanding of it will bring us closer to the fundamental nature and gift of forgiveness, thereby facilitating its realization. However, to determine the value of this hypothesis, we must consider both the process of forgiveness, and the contemporary definition of spirituality. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part depicts authors who discuss forgiveness through the lens of the four academic disciplines concerned with forgiveness: philosophy, theology, psychology, and spirituality. Issues that are covered include what is forgivable and what is not, and conditional versus unconditional forgiveness. Correlates of forgiveness, such as forgetting, anger, repentance, guilt, as well as results of psychotherapeutic empirical studies, are examined. A reflection on the concept of spirituality and how it relates to forgiveness concludes this first part. In the second part, we examine the hypothesis concerning the meaning and scope of the biblical quote “for they know not what they do,” and look at what the exegetic expertise has to say about its authenticity and meaning. This is followed by a historical interpretation of free will in major philosophical thinking in order to grasp its true sense, and its impact on the concept of personal responsibility. This philosophical questioning of free will brings us back to the Socratic thesis, “No one commits wrongdoing voluntarily.” Finally, the mimetic theory of René Girard contends that persecutors are fundamentally unaware and ignorant of what they are doing, and the theologian Lytta Basset argues that the illusion of knowing what is good and what is evil contributes to the ignorance that ignores itself. The third part of the thesis integrates the reflections and insights of the first two parts, as it brings forgiveness from the unforgivable endpoint to the healing endpoint. This is conceptualized in a schematic matrix of vertical and horizontal interactions. We discover that if the phrase “for they know not what they do” offers a reason-able answer to the question Why forgive? there is as well a second way that leads to forgiveness—love. Love is the key to forgiveness based on the evangelical message, while empathy is the primary means in the psychotherapeutic approach. Comparing “psychotherapeutic forgiveness” with “evangelical forgiveness” leads us to conclude that there are, in effect, two principal ways to access the gift of forgiveness—reason and love.
