Abstract:
3D printing is a revolutionary manufacturing method that allows the productions of engineering parts almost directly from modeling software on a computer. With 3D printing technology, future manufacturing could become vastly efficient. However, it is observed that the procedures used in 3D printing differ substantially among the printers and from those used in conventional manufacturing. In this thesis, the mechanical properties of engineering products fabricated by 3D printing were comprehensively evaluated and then compared with those made by conventional manufacturing. McCulloch, Thomas L. "Feasible Form Parameter Design of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2018. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2552.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that

After designing the object, the design was passed to the analysts. The designers and analysts were in constant communication. Nowadays, the designers used Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools in the parts modeling. For application the analysis at the geometries, initially a mesh to approximate the geometries is generated. After this, on the mesh the Finite Element Method (FEM) was applied. In complex en

Abstract:
The manufacture, laminate design, and modeling of a part with complex geometry are explored. The ultimate goal of the research is to produce a model that accurately predicts part stiffness. This is validated with experimental results of composite parts, which refine material properties for use in a final prototype part model. The secondary goal of this project is to explore manufacturing methods for improved manufacturability of the complex part. Potts, John B. III. "Developing and Testing an Anguilliform Robot Swimming with Theoretically High Hydrodynamic Efficiency." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2015. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2103.

Full text
Abstract:
An anguilliform swimming robot replicating an idealized motion is a complex marine vehicle necessitating both a theoretical and experimental analysis to completely understand its propulsion characteristics. The ideal anguilliform motion within is theorized to produce ``wakeless'' swimming (Vorus, 2011), a reactive swimming technique that produces thrust by accelerations of the added mass in the vicinity of the body. The net circulation for the unsteady motion is theorized to be eliminated. The robot was designed to replicate the desired, theoretical motion by applying control theory methods. I

Abstract:
This thesis presents a real-time autonomous guidance and control method for a quadrotor in a GPS-denied environment. The quadrotor autonomously seeks a destination while it avoids obstacles whose shape and position are initially unknown. We implement the obstacle avoidance and destination seeking methods using off-the-shelf sensors, including a vision-sensing camera. The vision-sensing camera detects the positions of points on the surface of obstacles. We use this obstacle position data and a potential-field method to generate velocity commands. Abstract:
As the technology scales, there is a need to develop design and optimization algorithms under various scenarios of uncertainties. These uncertainties are introduced by process variation and impact both delay and leakage. For future technologies at the end of CMOS scaling, not only process variation but the device defect density is projected to be very high. Thus realizing error tolerant implementation of Boolean functions with minimal redundancy overhead remains a challenging task. Abstract:
This thesis presents a new mechanical design for an exoskeleton actuator to power the sagittal plane motion in the human hip. The device uses a DC motor to drive a Scotch yoke mechanism and series elasticity to take advantage of the cyclic nature of human gait and to reduce the maximum power and control requirements of the exoskeleton. The Scotch yoke actuator creates a position-dependent transmission that varies between 4:1 and infinity, with the peak transmission ratio aligned to the peak torque periods of the human gait cycle. Simulation results show that both the peak and average motor tor
