In two contemporary Samoan works, Albert Wendt's short story “The Cross of Soot” (1974) and Sia Figiel's novel They Who Do Not Grieve (1999), tattooing produces and proclaims the psychological and social place of the tattoo bearer. The tattoo signals the splitting or doubling of subjectivity, a mechanism by which the individual human subject is produced continually and repeatedly. The Samoan tatau creates not only Samoan subjects but also the English word tattoo and the French tatouage. Wendt and Figiel treat the production and movement of the tattoo in the Pacific and the world; they thus inv

Broadband seismic deployments have been carried out in the Lützow-Holm Bay region (LHB), Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. The recorded teleseismic and local events are of sufficient quality to image the structure and dynamics of the crust and mantle of the terrain. Passive seismic studies by receiver functions and shear wave splitting suggest a heterogeneous upper mantle. Depth variations in topography for upper mantle discontinuities were derived from long period receiver function, indicating a shallow depth discontinuity at 660 km beneath the continental area of LHB. Abstract Following up on recent calls for studies dealing with first-order understandings of face (Arundale 2013; Haugh 2013), this paper presents arguments in favor of an empirical investigation of cultural conceptualizations (Sharifian 2011) underlying these first-order (or emic) models. The arguments are based on the findings of a study on business communication in international contexts (Mendes de Oliveira 2020). The study comprises the analysis of (a) interviews with business people from different sectors and (b) a compilation of e-mails exchanged by Brazilian and German employees of a he

Differences among provenances and between sites showed significance (p<0.05). Seedling growth showed a climatic and altitudinal pattern, in which seedlings f

A conceptual approach to the problem of managing spatial configurations of DNA molecules is considered. The work is problematic in nature and is a synthesis of the authors’ research in the field of modeling the behavior and structure of DNA by the methods of the mechanics of a deformable solid. The subject of research in this paper is the question of the applicability of methods of control theory to a living object by the example of a DNA molecule. The paper considers both issues of controllability on examples of the influence of the parameters of a molecule on its configuration, and questions

Visual secret sharing (VSS) scheme is a perfectly secure method to divide a secret image into several noise-like shadow images by splitting a secret pixel into black and white subpixels. Unlike other secret sharing schemes, the VSS scheme can be easily decoded by the human visual sight when staking shadow images. However, noise-like shadows are unusual and suspected by censors when delivered by e-mail or fax. Also, noise-like shadows are difficult to identify and manage when distributed. The problem was solved by adding the extended capability, a meaningful shadow image, in the so-called exten
