Abstract:
This paper presents a simple methodological framework to characterise the tangible and intangible benefits of a university athletics department. The methodology is applied to the athletics department at Gonzaga University (GU) in Spokane, Washington USA. The brand equity associated with this department is estimated at approximately US$5.8 million in 2006. Of this, between $617,000 and $2.71 million is ascribed to a specific type of tangible brand equity (with the most plausible estimate being $926,000); namely, the impact of GU athletics events on the economic vitality of the local community. The remainder is attributed to (unobserved) intangible brand equity benefits.

In the spring of 2001, Janice Williams Rutherford's graduate public history seminar, "Interpreting History through Material Culture" at Washington State University joined in a collaborative project with the staff at Campbell House, a historic house museum owned by the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, Washington, and outside museum consultant Margaret Piatt. The students undertook the research required to draft a new interpretive script for the museum and worked with staff and consultant to identify appropriate objects and suggest interpretive dialogue gleaned from the archival research. Steven E. Shay, one of the students from the seminar, continued working with museum staff after the academic semester ended to refine the script for adults and school children. The project was a successful learning experience in the area of academic/public collaboration. This article explores its successes and its limitations.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract At the time of completion in 1961, the roof of St. Charles Church became the largest unbalanced hyperbolic paraboloid structure in the United States and the only shell structure in Spokane, WA. Situated on an 8-acre site on the north side of the city, St. Charles is a modernist structure designed through partnership of Funk, Molander & Johnson engineers, architect William C. James and in consultation with Professor T.Y. Lin of the Structural Engineering Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. This asymmetric structure spans over 33.5 m (110 ft) and utilizes folded edge beams that taper from 1067 mm (42 in) at the base to a 76.2 mm (3 in) thickness at the topmost edge using regular strength reinforcing steel and concrete load carrying components. The novelty of the pre-stressed shell structure serves both architectural and structural design criteria by delivering a large, uninterrupted interior sanctuary space in materially and economically efficient manner. This structural assessment summarizes the roof’s historic design and construction according to the original construction documents, newspaper reports and historic photographs. The FEA is completed using UBC 1955 design loads and ACI 334 Concrete Shell Structures provisions.

Abstract:
In this article, we consider how corpus linguistics (CL) and conversation analysis (CA) can be used together to provide enhanced descriptions of spoken interaction in the context of small group teaching in higher education. From our analysis of the data, we show how the two approaches can be combined in an iterative process to account for features of spoken discourse at both micro (word) and macro (text) levels. Beginning with CL and focusing largely on words and combinations of words, we then use CA to highlight pertinent interactional features. Our methodology follows an iterative process: from CL to CA, back to CL and so on. This approach to analysis provides powerful insights into the ways in which interactants establish understandings in educational settings and, in particular, highlights the inter-dependency of words, utterances and text in the co-construction of meaning.

Abstract:
The study of discourse is the study of using language in actual use. In this article, the writer is trying to investigate the phonological features, either segmental or supra-segmental, in the spoken discourse of Indonesian university students. The data were taken from the recordings of 15 conversations by 30 students of Bina Nusantara University who are taking English Entrant subject (TOEFL –IBT). Finally, the writer is in opinion that the students are still influenced by their first language in their spoken discourse. This results in English with Indonesian accent. Even though it does not cause misunderstanding at the moment, this may become problematic if they have to communicate in the real world.

Blackwell, James Walter. "The text compositional architecture of university lectures : an exploration of genre and periodicity in spoken academic discourse." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1548/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the text-compositional options that are available for the construction of university-style lectures. In doing so, it employs techniques developed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to investigate how lectures are structured in terms of “genre” and the related issue of what is termed “hierarchy of periodicity”. It applies these techniques to the analysis of a small selection of university lectures to explore the ways in which, and the degree to which, these texts are structured as genres and the extent to which they are simultaneously structured by waves of foreshadowing and reiteration (or periodicity). As to the possible conclusions that might be reached from this type of analysis, this thesis will propose that the principles of “hierarchy of periodicity” and “genre complexes” are likely to be important options for structuring in university lectures, since all of the texts analyzed were found to be structured by such mechanisms. It will also proposes that lectures, although forms of speech, are structured in ways that are closer to forms of writing and that lectures as a set of texts can be categorized by the extent to which they display or do not display, the text-compositional arrangements of such (written) texts.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The Erasmus programme is one of the outstanding Community initiatives, even if it is spoken little of outside the world of the university. This book, one of the first devoted to the subject, analyses the virtuous effects that the programme has had on the university system, the geography of student flows, and the motivations and propositions of those who have taken part in it. The reports of the students indicate the Erasmus as a 'bubble of experience' and the book explores these inner experiences through a sociological approach, illustrating the vast potential in terms of the moulding of a 'homo novus Europaeus'. The data gathered prompt a reflection on the redefinition of the role of the student when he or she directly experiences the comparison with a context different and distant from that of origin, to which he or she is nevertheless destined to return. From this perspective, the Erasmus experience assumes the significance of a sort of temporary upheaval of status open to forms of 'experimentation of identity'.

This chapter examines the use of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology in the context of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and language learning and teaching research. A brief introduction to ASR is first provided, to make it clear why and how this technology can be used to the benefit of learning and development in second language (L2) spoken discourse. This is followed by an overview of the state of the art in research on ASR-based CALL. Subsequently, a number of relevant projects on ASR-based CALL conducted at the Centre for Language and Speech Technology of the Radboud University in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) are presented. Possible solutions and recommendations are discussed given the current state of the technology with an explanation of how such systems can be used to the benefit of Discourse Analysis research. The chapter concludes with a discussion of possible perspectives for future research and development.

The Year Abroad (YA) is, dare we say, a different order of experience from most years at university. It involves leaving the familiar structures in which a student has studied for (usually) two years to go and live in one or more foreign countries where a language of study is spoken. Students on a YA from a UK university can usually choose to study at a partner university, or work in an approved work placement, including an English-language assistantship. Undertaking these activities can be variously exhilarating and difficult for many students – and the range of possibilities means that the organisation of the YA presents diverse challenges and opportunities for both students and staff...

Student senators offered meeting space to the DuBois Club in their offices, violating university rules; in late March Diskin spoke to a crowd of thousands on the quad, yet despite all appearances the administration claimed the speech did not violate the Clabaugh Act.

The massive immigration of Italians to Argentina during the 19th and 20th centuries produced a contact between Italian and Spanish languages. This contact situation left signs in phraseological units of the Spanish variety spoken in Argentina. Our work concerns the diatopic phraseology of Spanish and aims at studying the Italian component in Argentinian Spanish phraseology. As a result, we shall contextualise the role of the Italian language in the evolution of the Spanish spoken in Argentina, describe the methodology used for the retrieval of the information contained in the phraseological corpus that is part of the database of the research project Frasytram (University of Alicante) and, finally, focus on the Argentinian phraseological units of the semantic field character-way of being-attitude that have components of the Italian language or derive from them, in order to identify its integration process.

Abstract:
Chinese university students enrolled in overseas coursework and English as Medium of Instruction courses domestically have a reputation for classroom passivity as recognized internationally. Thus, the case study was employed to explore Wenzhou Kean University (WKU) students’ ‘willingness to communicate’ based on motivation and attitude toward the classroom learning milieu. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were used in the semi- structured interview of 75 informants during the focus group discussion. Thematic content analysis method was used to analyze qualitative data collected. Grounded theory was used for the generation of theories. Findings showed that ESL Chinese university students are motivated because of knowledge acquisition and English spoken ability improvement when they engage in class discussion. A relaxing classroom climate, teacher’s personality and professional competence in designing the learning experiences contribute in shaping favorable learning attitudes necessary for active student participation in class discussion. Most WKU students intend to pursue graduate studies abroad and considers English speaking ability important in their future and career goals. This belief persistently motivates them to engage in class discussion. Besides, thinking skills development, English spoken language improvement, self-confidence build up, leadership skills, teamwork skills and adaptability to new environment development heighten the importance of class discussion.

The demo shows a practical application of an open-source research toolkit developed by University of Cambridge. The toolkit (PyDial) supports research on deep reinforcement learning for multi-domain dialogues. The application (CityTalk) is a spoken dialogue system for robots that give information to tourists about local hotels and restaurants. We had a very positive experience using the toolkit, but in a few areas we decided to do things our own way.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to improve English pronunciation in the university classroom of first-year Medicine students through the use of OERs. Technologies such as Voki or LEO network are used in the practical sessions of the English for Health Sciences module. Voki platform allows learners to practise and improve their fluency and spoken skills in the target language. LEO network was also used to allow students to exercise and check their pronunciation performance with the tool ‘Learn English through dictation’. Two surveys addressed to students tried to delve into their level of English pronunciation and the importance given to this ability up to now. We aimed at knowing how much the students were exposed to pronunciation training before entering university and whether this training was presented through the use of new technologies. First-year Medicine students seemed motivated to the improvement and learning of pronunciation techniques through the use of OERs. A final questionnaire revealed that, although the teaching proposal with the use of computer tools was rewarding, not all of them seemed so fond of new technologies as expected.
