Term prelabour rupture of membranescomplicates about 5% to 10% of term pregnancies and imposes therapeutic challenges upon the managing obstetrician. While spontaneous labour followed by ruptured membranes is the accepted default pathway towards delivery at term, comparative studies on term PROM and spontaneous onset of labour preceding ruptured membranes are scarce globally. Objective: To compare maternal socio-demography and neonatal outcomes of term PROM versus spontaneous onset of labour before membrane rupturein our tertiary facility. In most pregnancies labour begins at term in the presence of intact fetal membranes. Without intervention the membranes usually spontaneously rupture near the end of the first stage of labour. In 10% of pregnancies that deliver at term the fetal membranes fail to maintain their structural integrity and this results in their “prelabour rupture”, defined as spontaneous rupture of membranes at least one hour before the onset of labour. In 95–98% of these cases at term, labour is precipitated within 48 hours. Although preterm birth, defined as birth prior to 37 completed weeks of pregnancy, occurs

Boerhaave syndrome is a spontaneous rupture of the esophagus. It results from a sudden increase in esophageal pressure combined with negative intrathoracic pressure as seen with severe straining or vomiting. Esophageal perforation is extremely rare with an incidence of approximately 3.1 per 1,000,000 per year with a mortality rate estimated to be 20-50%. The rare occurrence and fatal nature of an esophageal perforation makes this syndrome a difficult yet important diagnosis to consider in the clinical setting. The model is a lattice model which incorporates stress relaxation, and considers the nucleation of pores at constant area, constant temperature, and constant particle number. A frictional contact, which mimics a material interface or geological fault, is simulated using two photoelastic plastics plates (Homalite or Polycarbonate) held together by friction and compression. The pre-uniaxial static loading is exerted by a hydraulic press. A unique design used in our experiments, which starts the spontaneous rupturing, is the exploding wire technique. It triggers the rupture within a controlled environment while keeping the spontaneous nature of the rupturing. T
