Abstract:
A world class sports complex will impact on the neighboring communities by providing grounds for interaction. The idea of an economic lift through international exposure and athletic competitions such as soccer, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, tennis, basketball, golf, track and possibly the Summer Olympic Games, as the Peace Games is enticing to a nation which is just now starting to rebuild its cities and is facing a stagnate economy. Many of the sports facilities in Sarajevo and other parts of old Yugoslavia have been destroyed. The opportunity exists, to create a complex where the most basic characteristics of sport are show - cased - camaraderie, healthy competition, sportsmanship and above all, human interaction. All key factors in the conflict resolution arena. Children are the most viable direction to follow. They do not know about war and ethic cleansing. By creating facilities which are designed for interaction, children who latter become adults, realize that ethnicity is irrelevant in a persons character. The other group to be targeted is that comprised of people who are asking themselves the question: what have we done? to our families, neighborhoods, cities and country? The ideas of the self serving leader who uses ethnicity as a means to power are becoming less and less appealing. When these groups are pared with the people who always new that war is wrong, specially when racially or culturally motivated, an healthy atmosphere can be achieved. People from one group will see their children and friends trying their best - sometimes wining, sometimes loosing. The emotional responses associated with it is critical. They will witness other parents from other groups having the same feelings for their children and friends. The observer can't help but notice that regardless of race or creed we are equal. We can expect that some of the residents from different cultures and social backgrounds will interact and become more tolerant if not friends as children and as adults. A teammate in sport, a teammate for life. This is where architecture and sport can be the most effective.

Abstract:
PURPOSE: To examine the relationships between muscle architecture and countermovement jump height, peak power, and maximal strength in collegiate volleyball players. METHODS: Fifteen female volleyball players (20 ± 1.3y, 176.3 ± 6.6cm, 70.1 ± 8.4 kg) were recruited as part of an ongoing athlete monitoring program. Athletes were tested on measures of vastus lateralis (VL) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and fascicle length (FL) using ultrasonography; countermovement jump height (CMJH, n = 14 and peak power allometrically scaled (CMJPPa, n = 14); and isometric peak force allometrically scaled (IPFa, n = 12). Pearson’s product moment zero-order correlations were used for analysis with critical alpha set to p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: Analysis revealed a positive relationship between VL MT and IPFa (r = 0.64, p = 0.025) and an inverse relationship between LG MT and CMJH (r = -0.54, p = 0.048). There were positive relationships between VL PA and all performance measures and between LG PA and CMJPPa (r = 0.54 to 0.71, p. < 0.05), and inverse relationships between VL FL and CMJPPa and between LG FL and all performance measures (r = -0.59 to -0.67, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Better jumpers had larger PA and shorter FL in both VL and LG, and stronger athletes had greater MT in VL, showing that differences in muscle architecture can influence performance parameters. Considering these findings and the results from previous longitudinal studies demonstrating the effects of heavy strength training on muscle architecture, it is recommended that collegiate volleyball athletes incorporate heavy lower body strength training into their training plan in order to increase PA in VL and LG and MT in VL.

Abstract:
The project is centered around combining an elementary school (year 4-9) with a public program of sports facilities and specialised workshops for creative and laborative subjects. The challenge of the project has been to create an environment that allows for a focused and safe space for the students in their every day work place, while at the same time integrating the school in a larger and more public context.

Abstract:
PURPOSE: To examine changes in muscle architecture, reactive strength, and explosive ability in collegiate volleyball players throughout a competitive season. METHODS: Ten female volleyball players (20.4 ± 1.1 y, 178.3 ± 4.8 cm, 72.6 ± 5.3 kg) were recruited for the study. Athletes were tested at pre-season (T1), pre-taper (T2), and post-taper (T3) on measures of vastus lateralis muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and fascicle length (FL) using ultrasonography, countermovement jump reactive strength index modified (RSImod), and peak power allometrically scaled (PPa). Training load (TL: session RPEduration) and strength training volume-load times displacement (VLd) were monitored for 15 wks. One-way repeated measures ANOVAs were used for analysis with alpha level set at p≤0.05. RESULTS: There was a reduction in VLd/wk (p<0.001, d=3.1) and TL/wk (p<0.001, d=2.7) between in-season (T1-T2) and tapering (T2-T3) training phases. There were time effects for MT (p<0.001) and PA (p=0.03). Post-hoc pairwise comparisons revealed changes in MT (increase T1-T2: p<0.001, d=2.8 and T1-T3: p<0.001, d=1.7; decrease T2-T3: p=0.01, d=0.6), PA (increase T1-T2: p=0.02, d=3.9), and no changes in FL or PPa. Despite no time effect, RSImod showed an increasing trend from T2-T3: p=0.04, d=0.23. CONCLUSIONS: In-season training resulted in favorable changes in muscle architecture, which remained elevated above pre-season values following the taper. These changes coupled with the reductions in TL and VLd during the taper may be related to changes in stretch-shortening cycle function during a sport-specific task as inferred from the changes in RSImod

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an overreach and taper on measures of muscle architecture, jumping, and throwing performance in Division I collegiate throwers preparing for conference championships. Six collegiate track and field throwers (3 hammer, 2 discus, 1 javelin) trained for 12 weeks using a block-periodization model culminating with a 1-week overreach followed by a 3-week taper (ORT). Session rating of perceived exertion training load (RPETL) and strength training volume-load times bar displacement (VLd) were recorded weekly. Athletes were tested pre-ORT and post-ORT on measures of vastus lateralis architecture, unloaded and loaded squat and countermovement jump performance, underhand and overhead throwing performance, and competition throwing performance. There was a statistical reduction in weight training VLd/session (d = 1.21, p ≤ 0.05) and RPETL/session (d = 0.9, p ≤ 0.05) between the in-season and ORT training phases. Five of 6 athletes improved overhead throw and competition throwing performance after the ORT (d = 0.50, p ≤ 0.05). Vastus lateralis muscle thickness statistically increased after the in-season training phase (d = 0.28, p ≤ 0.05) but did not change after the ORT. Unloaded countermovement jump peak force and relative peak power improved significantly after the ORT (d = 0.59, p ≤ 0.05, d = 0.31, p ≤ 0.05, respectively). These findings demonstrate that an overreaching week followed by a 3-week taper is an effective means of improving explosive ability and throwing performance in collegiate track and field throwers despite the absence of detectable changes in muscle architecture.

Abstract:
This thesis questions contemporary society?s understanding and ability to deal with the universal instinct known as aggression. The investigation identifies the driving forces behind adolescent aggression and the myth based rituals and cultural devices used to mediate it. The primary case in this study is a suburban community called Malvern, known for its high rate of teen violence and aggressive acts. Malvern is evaluated based on its current rites of passage rituals and institutions used for the socialisation and individuation of the young members of its community. This is followed by a proposed intervention introducing the use of building and landscape as devices to mediate adolescent aggression through the emergence of redefined myth based rituals and rites of passage within Malvern?s unique context.

Abstract:
The architecture of the sports stadium has evolved dramatically throughout its history. From the ancient gladiatorial arenas to the domes and retractable-roof ballparks of the 20th Century, the stadium has become an iconic and integral part of life, in our modern society. Through the globalization of sports and sporting events, such as the Olympics and World Cup, new and more exciting opportunities are being extended to those who, historically, have been without the resources or infrastructural means to support such endeavors. However, for all the excitement and optimism that accompanies the initial design and planning, the actual development of the necessary structures and support systems rarely provides the expected return on what, ultimately, becomes a staggering investment of time, money, and labor. In fact, operators have found it nearly impossible to provide for the continued operation, maintenance, and regular occupation of these facilities, thus resulting in an overwhelming burden on the local community. It is the purpose of this thesis to provide a survey of architectural precedents from selected mega-events of the last 100 years, as well as a number of other contemporary stadium projects, in an effort to fully convey the magnitude and relevancy of this issue, to identify industry trends and practical models, and more definitively present the need for an alternative approach to design. Additionally, a proposal will be put in place for more of a focus on modularity and prefabrication, in order to transform the Olympic or World Cup stadium into a less permanent element within the urban landscape. It is the hope that the systemic issues, currently associated with hosting international sporting events, may be remedied through the architecture, and ultimate disassembly, of the 21st Century stadium. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce the negative impact of such undertakings, and to aid in the realization of the inherent potential for positive change therein.

Abstract:
The subject of this master thesis is architectural study of sport center in Brno focused on football stadium for 17,500 spectators. Standard of Stadium comes on category 3 of UEFA, with some elements of the standard Elite category. It is a complex study on the possible development of the site as a sports and relaxation area with a primary sport function in the park. The architectural expression and volume solution of stadium is mainly based on the morphology of sports buildings, form follows function. The organic concept is clearly defined roofing mass on elliptic floor plan which mainly response to layout of the auditorium mainly in horizontal and vertical direction. Enabling quality of vision on the pitch is the basic idea of the concept. The construction follows the morphology of the terrain and longitudinal axis is oriented in a north-south direction with the main tribune to the west. The primary load-bearing structure is frame-storey reinforced concrete frame, covered steel truss construction jacketed with titan-zinc hexagonal templates.

Abstract:
A new district is planned at Årstafältet, with a public urban activity path. We want to give our school a special position in this newly built context. Årstafältet is a large-scale horizontal location, and therefore requires a larger gesture - something that stands out and breaks the horizontal field. To work at height therefore felt obvious for us and verticality became an important word in our work. The building also meets the landscape by being an extension and an end to the activity path. Urban life and street activity continues into the building, making the building a node and a landmark on the site. The fact that the building extends upwards also means that a large area on the site is released, therefore a piece of Årstafältet is kept. The given program for the new school building has the title "Sport and school". We have chosen to interpret the word sport as activity and movement, and this we have linked to the vertical grip of the building. The activity theme frames the entire building by the fact that an athletic hall is located at the bottom and one at the top. Between these sports halls, different types of vertical communications span, which also begin and end in two stands. The program also expresses the wish that the building should be more than just a school - there should be room for public functions. Therefore, the building's rooms are designed and intended to be used in a multifunctional manner.

Abstract:
The purpose of the current study was (1) to examine the differences between standing and lying measures of vastus lateralis (VL), muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and cross-sectional area (CSA) using ultrasonography; and (2) to explore the relationships between lying and standing measures with isometric and dynamic assessments of force production—specifically peak force, rate of force development (RFD), impulse, and one-repetition maximum back squat. Fourteen resistance-trained subjects (age = 26.8 ± 4.0 years, height = 181.4 ± 6.0 cm, body mass = 89.8 ± 10.7 kg, back squat to body mass ratio = 1.84 ± 0.34) agreed to participate. Lying and standing ultrasonography images of the right VL were collected following 48 hours of rest. Isometric squat assessments followed ultrasonography, and were performed on force platforms with data used to determine isometric peak force (IPF), as well as RFD and impulse at various time points. Forty-eight hours later, one-repetition maximum back squats were performed by each subject. Paired-samples t-tests revealed statistically significant differences between standing and lying measurements of MT (p < 0.001), PA (p < 0.001), and CSA (p ≤ 0.05), with standing values larger in all cases. Further, standing measures were correlated more strongly and abundantly to isometric and dynamic performance. These results suggest that if practitioners intend to gain insight into strength-power potential based on ultrasonography measurements, performing the measurement collection with the athlete in a standing posture may be preferred.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine changes in muscle architecture and jumping performance in NCAA division I women's volleyball players throughout a competitive season and in preparation for conference championships. Ten women volleyball players were tested at preseason (T1), pretaper (T2), and post-taper (T3) on measures of vastus lateralis muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA) and fascicle length (FL) using ultrasonography, and unloaded and loaded squat jump height (SJH) and peak power allometrically scaled to body mass (SJPPa) on a force platform. Rating of perceived exertion training load and strength training volume load were monitored weekly. Player's MT (p < 0.001, Glass's Δ = 2.8) and PA increased (p = 0.02, Δ = 3.9) after in-season training. However, MT decreased after the taper (p = 0.01, Δ = 0.6) but remained elevated above preseason values (p < 0.001, Δ = 1.7). There were no statistical changes in FL, SJH, or SJPPa. Large-to-very large negative relationships (r = −0.51 to −0.81) were observed between preseason relative maximal strength and changes in SJH and SJPPa with various loads over the season. These findings demonstrate that relatively low volumes of strength training and concurrent sport training during a tapering period are capable of preserving jumping performance, but not MT in women's volleyball players; however, jumping performance changes seem to be related to the player's strength level. Stronger players may benefit from an overreaching microcycle before the taper to preserve previously accrued muscular adaptations and jumping performance.

Abstract:
Gottsunda is facing a big change, where a whole new district will arise. This will contribute to a whole lot of new citizens, and more pressure on the infrastructure where a new train will pass that connects the new district and makes it more attractive. Gottsunda City Hall is located parallel with the new square, which makes it a junction for the area. The City Hall has a big focus on the public world, which makes its focus to be as open and available for the citizens and visitors. The main focus inside the building is sport activities and cultural activities, which is a big part in the lives of the citizens in Gottsunda. Expect sport activities and cultural approaches, a big sports field is located beside the City Hall. The sports field is open to everyone, and is allowed for everyone to use. The building has a very characteristic façade that shows how open and welcoming the building is. The heart and the main room in the City Hall is the big open, diagonal atrium that goes through the whole building. Along this diagonal atrium is the façade all in glass, to make it more open and contribute to have a view from inside out, and from outside in. This to make a strong bond between the building and the crowded square.

Buhler, Doyle Leo. "Capturing the game: the artist-sportsman and early animal conservation in American hunting imagery, 1830s-1890s." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2447.

Full text
Abstract:
During the last half of the nineteenth century, American sportsmen-artists painted hunting-related images that were designed to promote the ideals of sporting behavior, conservationist thought, and the interests of elite sportsmen against non-elite hunters. Upper-class American attitudes regarding common hunters and trappers, the politics of land use, and the role of conservation in recreational hunting played a significant part in the construction of visual art forms during this period, art which, in turn, helped shape national dialogue on the protection and acceptable uses of wildlife. This dissertation takes issues critical to mid-century American conservation thought and agendas, and investigates how they were embodied in American hunting art of the time. Beginning with depictions of recreational sportsmen during the era of conservationist club formation (mid-1840s), the discussion moves to representations of the lone trapper at mid-century. These figures were initially represented as a beneficial force in the conquest of the American frontier, but trappers and backwoodsmen became increasingly problematic due to an apparent disregard for game law and order. I explore the ways in which market hunting was depicted, and how it was contrasted with acceptable "sportsmanlike" hunting methods. Subsequent chapters consider the portrayal of the boy hunter, an essential feature to the sportsman's culture and its continuance, and the tumultuous relationship between elite sportsmen and their guides, who were known to illegally hunt off-season. The last chapters address the subject of the wild animal as heroic protagonist and dead game still life paintings, a pictorial type that represented the lifestyle of sportsmen and their concern for conservative catches and adherence to game law. Developments in conservation during the period were significantly tied to class and elitist aspirations, and artist-sportsmen merged these social prejudices with their agenda for game conservation. Their representations of hunting art both responded to and promoted the conservationist cause.

Abstract:
The present research and architectural project search the application of the theory of blurring limits proposed by the architect Toyo Ito, in sport architecture typology, which has been called “Sport Centre”. The objective is to counter the current situation of this type in Peru, which has a predisposition to place physical urban limits that are disconnected from the environment. For this, it searches to generate interior-exterior connection through the blurring limit concept public spaces and different degrees of permeability in the structure, spatial, form and functionality from the building. The project will be in Villa María del Triunfo and will be of a public and district category. It will be cataloged as “Sport for all”. This is a social initiative that has the objective to reach users of all ages into the influence radius. On the other hand, the sports will be focused on massification, recreational, training and competitive sports in a non-federated category. Finally, the flexibility of the sport halls and public outdoor spaces will allow for the other uses that are compatible with sport, generating a greater contribution to the community of the area.

Abstract:
The main purpose is to show the way, how gymnasium in Mikulov can overcome its difficult existence situation by the architectural and urban study. The solved territory is defined by the campus of the school, Piarist Street, Comenius Street And Under the platter street. In this triangle is also a memorial tree, church, fallen memorial, park, 3 bus stops, mixed civic amenities and family housing. The proposal respects or supports them. The most problematic attributes that the design reacts to are the declining interest in grammar schooling, the untapped potential of a more active relationship between region and city and also non-human environment surrounding the school grounds associated with an inconvenient traffic situation in the city. The result of the solution is to be a positive spatial-functional-operational transformation of the site at a strategic-urban-architectural level with a long-term effect.

This thesis explores the potential of the sports museum as a major institution and resource. Drawing from the great tradition of sports and from the character of the New England region, the design of a New England Sports Museum is undertaken. The museum's design is formulated on a concept of architectural imbeddedness; the notion of a "world within" - a world which in preserving a contextual fabric and character becomes part of the life of that context, while engendering a distinct experience within which is its own.

Abstract:
This study focuses on a cultural phenomenon that is driven by the demolition of Major League Baseball stadiums, ballparks, and fields. Prompted by their inherent role in the evolution of the sport and the inadequacies of the existing historic preservation framework, this study examines how American society preserves this utilitarian form, after their demolition, through observations, data collection, and analysis. In doing so, this study exposes that Major League Baseball stadiums, ballparks, and fields are preserved through the use of nine overlapping preservation methods, which memorialize five significant features. However, though these preservation methods do not prevent Major League Baseball stadiums from being demolished, they do illustrate how our society alternatively preserves historically and culturally significant resources when the existing historic preservation framework is rendered incompatible.

Abstract:
Function is the first priority of designing architecture. Function lets architectural space serve human body movement properly. Today, there are many sport centers( gyms) for people to choose. Most of the gyms are simply rooms with machines. Athough their spaces can fulfill the basic demands of a workout gym (function), the function of gym design is not only to give people spacce to work out, but slao to use the architectural space to improve exercise performance. As a bodybuilder and powerlifter for seven years, I have competed in bodybuilding. I am also planning to compete in powerlifting. So, I want to use my knowledge and experience of training to imrove the exercise performance through design of the architectural space.

Many mountain resorts lack balance in revenue from season to season. Mountain resorts are most often geared toward, and capitalize on, peak ski season, receiving much less visitation and revenue in the summer season and even more so in the spring and fall. Due to projected climate changes, “increasing temperatures will affect important winter activities such as downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, which require snow on the ground. Projections indicate later snow and less snow coverage in ski resort areas” (Karl, Melillo, Peterson, 133). This indicates an even greater need for a shift to year-round attractions for visitors in order to balance the revenue stream of mountain resorts. The infusion of an all-season action sports camp is a catalyst to generate an increase in year-round visitation and profit for the resort. Examples of action sports include skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX biking, and mountain biking. When integrating an action sports camp into the existing resort, striving for balance, harmony, and oneness between the existing and proposed is imperative to success. These principals are present in the sports and allow for the connection from the athletes to the landscape. With any proposed development, specifically in mountain environments, potential environmental impacts are an issue, especially at a site where the natural scenic beauty is in such high demand. “It is the resort’s environment that draws the customer” Schwanke, 119). The relationships between the mountain, resort, camp, and users must be balanced and work in harmony with each other. Copper Mountain Resort provides an ideal location to implement this strategy. Catalyst Action Sports Camp plays on the tension between the mountain and the human, capitalizing on the balance, harmony, and oneness between them. Campers are connected to the surrounding mountain majesty through directed views, inspiring and exciting them to progress their skills and challenge their fears and become one with the mountain. Catalyst is infused into the existing resort, harmonizing with resort operations and stimulating life in the village in all seasons. Ultimately,Catalyst Action Sports Camp helps balance the revenue stream and provide additional stability given changing climate scenarios.

Abstract:
The theme of the development of the existing sports grounds was dealt with Based on a number of analyzes, visits to the site and communication with the community management, the theme of the development of the existing sports grounds was dealt with. The whole territory is up to a football field in a very maintained conditions. There are two smaller accommodation facilities, which are seasonally used mainly by schools in nature and other students, but their condition is quite unsatisfactory. The soccer field, which is the only one maintained, belongs to the existing base of soccer players - the dressing room with the clubhouse. Their condition is also somewhat aggravated. In the current spatial plan, the whole proposed area is at the interface of two areas, the first is the area of sport and individual recreation and the second is the area to be examined. Urban design is based on the location of the existing soccer field and the preservation or improvement of existing links to the surrounding area. Most of the paved areas will be overtaken. Part of the design of the development of sports activities in the village was also to find a possible solution for parking for tourists, for which there is no free space in the village. The chosen location is advantageous in that, when a parking lot will be created, it will be created near the main entrance to the village on road II. Cl. No. 420 from Hustopeče through the village. Architectonically, but also conceptually, the construction is based on the economic possibilities of the municipality, the possibilities of variability of the solution and especially of the possibilities of staging construction. The result are two buildings. One main, replacing the background of spccer players, creates the conditions for year-round training in the new gym, for going to fitness, while part of the building is a platform for the soccer field. The second building is an accommodation that replaces the existing unsatisfactory buildings. Architecturally, they are masses that are greatly affected by the modules. The building structure and the facilities of the sports hall are structurally designed from standardized modular systems, steel containers that are interconnected to create an unusual spectacle. The area of the gym is defined by a reinforced concrete skeleton. Both buildings are covered with gold anodized sheet metal, which is profiled similarly to the peripheral walls of the containers. At the same time, the object was to create year-round sports grounds that are accessible to the general public and youth.

Abstract:
A mobile robot control architecture called SPOTT$ sp1$ is proposed and implemented as a real-time system of concurrently executing and co-operating modules. What distinguishes SPOTT from other behavioral architectures is that it is able to guarantee task completion for navigational tasks under many different scenarios. SPOTT provides a bridge for linking behavioral (i.e., reactive) and symbolic control and has actually been interfaced with the logical reasoning system called COCOLOG. One of the roles of the symbolic reasoner is to help guarantee task completion in the situations where SPOTT is not able to solely do so. In essence, SPOTT is a real-time AI system which is responsible for dynamically adapting to changing environmental circumstances in order to successfully execute and complete a set of navigational tasks for an autonomous mobile robot.
SPOTT consists of a behavioral controller, a local dynamic path planner, and a global path planner, as well as a map database and a graphical user interface. The behavioral control formalism is called TR+ and is based on an adaptation and extension of the Teleo-Reactive (TR) formalism. TR+ rules make decisions which affect actuator control and map database maintenance. A dynamic local path planner continually polls the map database in order to navigate around newly encountered obstacles. The local dynamic path planner is based on a potential field method using harmonic functions, which are guaranteed to have no spurious local minima. The global planning module advises the local planning module in order to position and project the global goal onto the local border. A real-time and parallel implementation of SPOTT using a message passing software package called PVM has been developed and tested across a collection of ten to fifteen heterogeneous workstations. Navigational experiments have consisted of moving the robot in an office and laboratory environment to known spatial locations with no or a partial a priori map. ftn$ sp1$A System which integrates Potential fields for planning On-line with TR+ program control in order to successfully execute a general suite of Task commands.

Abstract:

Includes bibliographical references (p. 135-139).
This thesis describes a compact, wireless, wearable system that measures, for purposes of biomechanical analysis, signals indicative of forces, torques and other descriptive and evaluative features that the human body undergoes during bursts of extreme physical activity (such as during athletic performance). Standard approaches leverage high speed camera systems, which need significant infrastructure and provide limited update rates and dynamic accuracy, to make these measurements. This project uses 6 degree-of-freedom inertial measurement units worn on various segments of an athlete's body to directly make these dynamic measurements. A combination of low and high G sensors enables sensitivity for slow and fast motion, and the addition of a compass helps in tracking joint angles. Data from the battery-powered nodes is acquired using a custom wireless protocol over an RF link. This data, along with rigorous calibration data, is processed on a PC, with an end product being precise angular velocities and accelerations that can be employed during biomechanical analysis to gain a better understanding of what occurs during activity. The focus of experimentation was baseball pitching and batting at the professional level. Several pitchers and batters were instrumented with the system and data was gathered during several pitches or swings. The data was analyzed, and the results of this analysis are presented in this thesis. The dynamic results are more precise than from other camera based systems and also offer the measurement of metrics that are not available from any other system, providing the opportunity for furthering sports medicine research. System performance and results are evaluated, and ideas for future work and system improvements are presented.

Sports venues require large amounts of parking to facilitate the number of spectators attending an event. The parking, mostly surface, is underutilized when compared to traditional parking lots accommodating daily use. Large parking surfaces alter the natural hydrological cycle by generating large volumes of runoff. Over time, pollutants build up on a parking surface and are discharged into a stormwater drainage system during a rain event. The intent of the research is to investigate the use of Best Management Practices that ultimately reduce the pollutant loads created by stormwater runoff while creating amenities for spectators that could potentially generate revenue. The focus of the study will be on a 400 acre sports venue in Kansas City, Missouri, the Truman Sports Complex. To understand retrofitting stormwater management practices, one must understand how large parking lots are constructed and understand successful examples. Through the use of archival research, interviews and analysis of two parking lot case studies, Northgate Mall in Seattle, Washington and US Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois, the research analyzed how retrofitting design solutions are utilized to reduce stormwater pollutant loads. Each case study documents a distinct type of retrofitting strategy; bioswales at Northgate Mall and permeable concrete pavers at US Cellular Field. Using the Design Point Method developed by the Center for Watershed Protection, the research analyzes each case study retrofit design solution - conceptually and post construction. The Design Point Method allowed the research to measure the success of retrofitting strategies and informed the research to as to how the strategies could be implemented at the Truman Sports Complex. The conclusion of the project is a retrofit design solution of a surface parking lot at the Truman Sports Complex. Using the Design Point Method as an analysis tool, the final study provides compelling evidence that retrofitting existing surface parking lots at sports venues using Best Management Practices provides a sustainable solution to reducing pollutant loads while creating the potential for enhancing the tailgate experience for the sports fan.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis was preceded by a specialized atelier focusing on the urban – architectural design of the area of „Vsetín – Ohrada“. During this project, I was mainly focusing on the analysis of the area and the basic design. The project focuses on the area in the southern part of Vsetín. Its borders are formed by Vsetínská Bečva from the northwest side, the 1st class expressway from the northeast side and the waterworks building from the south. The main goal of the project is to attract more visitors to the quiet nature oriented area, who will be provided with a large number of outdoor and indoor activities that can be done in the area. The area is separated by a bridge and an industrial zone from the outskirts of the city and thus lacks a connection to urban development. The project is therefore designed as a separate urban unit, reflecting the natural aspects of the whole area. The advantage of the place is the previously mentioned river Bečva flowing directly through the area and a bike path lining the right bank of this river. Buildings with added soil to create slopes with hangout areas form, among other things, a noise and aesthetic barrier from the city, turning attention to the river and nature. The grass-covered slopes will be made of soil obtained from the current slopes of soil under the auditorium around the spartakiad stadium as well as the excavation work of the newly designed buildings. These slopes also visually unify the buildings, contribute to the organic and natural appearance of the entire design, create hangout areas for spectators and add back the grass areas that were taken away because of the construction of the buildings.

Abstract:
In the practical part of my work I create relation between architecture and stained glass. I chose „Ąžuolynas Sport Centre“ that complements „sports town“ situated in Ąžuolynas park in Kaunas. The modern building was created by architects Vilius Adomavičius, Vida Vyšniauskienė and Darius Čiuta. The building is 117 meters long and 12 meters wide. Inside there are administration premise, cafes, a beauty salon, cloakrooms, rooms for trainers, gym, spa and water treatment rooms. Glass dominates compositional expression of the whole building. I design modern stained-glass forms emphasising characteristic glass qualities such as materiality and colour. I base my work on relation between architecture and glass, search for optimal forms that complement architectural lanscape. I incorporate shadows of the trees in the environment and recreate their reflection on glass using openwork grid. This stylistic element is united with transparent and coloured glass areas. I also try to sustain the relation between the building and its environment. Creating a double glass net, which shows a wide spectrum of vibrant colours, I pay attention to colour effectiveness, their relationship between each other and also emotional potency. For the presentation of practical work a plane-table and a detail of stained glass project are represented (130 x 95 cm., glass, glazure, sandblasting).

Abstract:
This thesis studies how utterly marginalised people acquire acceptance or credibility - therefore participation - in the established civic and economic processes of a larger host municipality. In particular the signifi cance to this aspiration of incremental house and city-making is explored. The primary vehicle of interpretation is Savda Ghvera, a large resettlement colony for people resettled from central Delhi, for which the author organised a central sewerage system, which in turn became the basis for a neighbourhood association with political influence. Incrementalism describes a process of city-making in increments - as materials, time, etc. become available - mostly through the [self-] building of houses which, in their later stages, can support commercial or other activities. The main concern of this thesis is two-fold. Firstly it studies “shared incrementalism”, or the degree to which a commitment arises to a social and political context greater than an aggregate of individual houses. Secondly, it studies the role of making in creating the conditions for sharing, and with that, the roles of a visiting architect-researcher. On one hand, the constraints upon marginalised peoples are severe, and it is impossible to accurately assess the depth of commitment to both house and to a larger social and political order. On the other hand, it is evident that the opportunities for collaboration are volatile, constantly shifting, and that the virtues of solidarity are not necessarily accepted at face value. The process of shared incrementalism is seen through the lens of Amartya Sen’s concept of ‘freedom’ in the context of global capitalism, which places stress on what he terms ‘capacity-building’. The term emphasises the capacity of an individual to escape poverty and acquire dignity, whereas this thesis studies not only how this might be achieved through shared incrementalism but also the conditions under which this sharing might be converted into long-term political solidarity. Accordingly, comparison is made between Savda Ghevra and older resettlement colonies that have been absorbed by ever-expanding Delhi.
