Abstract:
Participation in sport during high school has been linked with a range of educational and developmental benefits. However, there is limited research investigating the benefits of participation in sport from the perspective of Aboriginal former youth sports participants. The purpose of the current research was to investigate how participation in sports impacted on the educational engagement, aspirations and development of Aboriginal former youth sports participants. Interpretive phenomenological analysis of semistructured interviews with six participants was conducted. Analysis was conducted utilising the Positive Youth Development asset framework. Participants reported a positive influence for their participation in youth sport on key education related assets including, achievement motivation, school engagement and relationships with teachers. Participants also reflected upon the role of participation in youth sports in the development of empowerment and positive identity assets. For these participants, involvement in youth sport had clear educational and developmental benefits. It is concluded that youth sports participation is one developmental context with the potential to have a positive influence on the educational and developmental trajectory of Aboriginal youth.

Abstract:
Youth sporting activities have been explored as a way to impact positive personal transformation and development, glaringly demonstrated by world-wide investments in public policies, programs, and projects. We studied positive effects of participation in sports on the developmental assets of 614 adolescents (13.1 ± 1.7 years) actively engaged in extracurricular sport programs targeted at socially disadvantaged youths, from five municipalities across five states of the southern, south-eastern and north-eastern regions of Brazil. Participants responded to a developmental assets questionnaire designed to capture sociodemographic and human development data. Multilevel logistic regression was used to explore associations between years of participation in sport and human development indicators, controlling for age and sex. Our results showed that the quality of the young people’s support network and duration of program participation positively influenced sport participation, which, in turn, was associated with willingness to learn. A strong association was also observed between sport participation and developmental assets. Thus, we offer new evidence of a relationship between positive development and environmental factors in which individual and contextual forces can be aligned, and we provide new reference data for developing countries.

Abstract:
The paper analyses the relationship between sport and tourism. Starting from the literature on sport tourism and tourism sport, we examine the impact of a sporting event in terms of tourist flow in relation to the provision of sporting facilities in the Italian regions. The sport tourism is an original product, taking into account both relations between tourism and sport, but also a real osmosis of sport activities with the touristic ones. Mega events, like the Olympics, or local events, as city marathons, exert an increasingly significant role in positioning the resort in the tourist market, improving image, local amenities and infrastructure in general. Sports tourism could be a driving force for local development, community cohesiveness, economics benefits, social incentives, positioning the localities in the touristic market, improving their image.

Abstract:
Sport is increasingly used as a tool for development and peacebuilding to reach an array of populations (Hayhurst, 2009), including girls and women in the Two-Thirds World (Brady, 2005; Hayhurst, 2014; Saavedra, 2009). However, scholars have cautioned against a universal definition of sport considering its historical link to colonization (Darnell & Hayhurst, 2011; Saavedra, 2009) as well as the promotion of universal benefits of sport for girls (Brady, 2005; Larkin, Razack, & Moola, 2007). Therefore, a postcolonial feminist framework was employed to qualitatively explore how 12 secondary school girls in northern Uganda define sport. In addition, participants in this study identified the benefits that they and other girls and women receive from participating in sport. Semistructured interviews were conducted face-to-face and were transcribed, coded, and thematized by the researchers. Trustworthiness was established by engaging a peer debriefer from Uganda and critical awareness of researcher positionality through reflexivity. Results include how the participants defined sport and physical activity, some as a singular and others as a binary concept, and how girls benefit from participating in sport in northern Uganda. The identified benefits include aspects of health, social life, engagement, opportunities, socioemotional development, and competition. Many of these benefits are congruent with literature from within and outside of Uganda; however, the results also indicate a need for a deeper understanding of how communities define and benefit from sport where sport for development programs are delivered. Connections between the results and the postcolonial feminist framework, study limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

The research was focused on the development of a deep stabilization system of female handball players by ap- plying balance exercises. The premise was to reduce the number of injuries in the context of the development of the bodily core. The study involved 17 first-league female handball players (N=17 females, age 16.1±1.89 years; weight: 54.9±3.85 kg, height: 1.66±0.03 m, BMI: 20.34±1.41 kg/m2). Following the assessment of the condition of the deep stabilization system, designed intervention programs was designed for core development. Female handball players completed 12 training units with balance equipment. The effects of the balance exercises on injury incidence were assessed comparing the number of injuries during the season and after its completion. Evaluation of the effectiveness of balance exercises revealed the development of the deep stabilization system (p<0.05). The injury reduction in the context of the core development was not statistically significant. There was a significant reduction in the number of injuries with a loss of time greater than seven days (p<0.05). This study raised the awareness of its participants about understanding the relationship between the deep stabilization system level and injury prevention.

Abstract:
Background: Multi-sport participation has been advocated for youth as a means to foster athletic development and reduce over-use injury. Whether this sport variety may influence functional and psychological readiness after injury is unclear. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare presentation, and functional and psychological recovery between single sport and multi-sport pediatric athletes following an ACL reconstruction (ACLR). Methods: Following IRB approval, prospectively collected data in consecutive patients treated for ACL injury (1/2015-2/2017) in a pediatric sports medicine clinic was reviewed. Inclusion required primary ACLR. Injury and surgical data, patient reported outcome measures (PROM) including both functional (Pedi-IKDC) and psychological PROM (ACSI-28 and ACL-RSI), functional clearance data (Y balance testing), timing of return to play clearance, and any re-injuries were reviewed. Comparison of multi-sport and single sport athletes was performed using a Kruskal-Wallis test and ANOVA analysis followed by T-tests for multiple comparisons. Results: 81.5% of patients who underwent an ACL reconstruction were single sport athletes. Single sport athletes presented with a higher initial BMI (24.47 ± 5.67 vs 22.45 ± 3.81, p = 0.03) than multi-sport athletes. In this cohort, soccer players (89%) were more likely to be specialized compared to football (61%) or basketball players (69%, p<0.01). No differences between groups were noted regarding surgical procedures or concomitant injuries. While no significant differences were found between the groups in time to functional clearance or clearance scores, it was noted that only ¾ of single sport athletes returned to sports (74.0% vs 92.3%, p = 0.06). Reported confidence in functional and psychological recovery improved in both groups throughout rehabilitation (see Table 1). Multi-sport athletes in this cohort demonstrated no advantage in either phase of recovery. Conclusion: Although multi-sport participation has been established to improve athletic development, and decrease burnout and over-use injury; it may not confer advantages in comparison to the specialized athlete for functional or psychological recovery following ACL reconstruction. Abstract:
Pickleball, a paddle sport that combines aspects of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is one of the fastest growing sports in America. The sport is especially popular with older adults as it provides a means for both competition and exercise. Limited research is available on the motivation and perceived benefits of participants in this unique and growing community. A total of 3,012 participants completed a survey instrument that included items from the Sport Motivation Scale, the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire, and the Quality and Importance of Recreational Services. Participants reported being more task oriented than ego oriented, suggesting that pickleball may effectively satisfy the need for persons to be engaged in physical activities that allow for the ongoing development of personal mastery. This finding is supported by respondents noting that their primary motivation to participate in pickleball involved mastering difficult training techniques. However, participants cited competition as the top perceived benefit to their participation. This result supports two possible conclusions that motivation and benefit are different and potentially disconnected constructs or that the benefit of competition among this sample of older persons is understood through the lens of personal mastery, whereby the demonstration of that mastery is only possible through competition.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: First, to qualitatively explore mainstreamed hard of hearing adolescent athletes' psychosocial development, centering on their perspectives of cultural identity, self-concept, and self-esteem and the interaction of these psychological constructs with sport participation. Second, to follow-up with a quantitative measure objectively assessing the impact of sport participation on these psychological domains. Participants were hard of hearing adolescent athletes in the Northeast Atlantic Region, all of whom were currently engaging in some level of sport participation at the time of the study. Five mainstreamed hard of hearing athletes, three male and two female, participated in a semi-structured interview format. Interviews were performed at a time and place convenient for the participant. The purpose of the interview was to elicit detailed, authentic, rich content related to their experiences as hard of hearing athletes both in school and on the field and how these experiences have impacted their self-concept, cultural identification, and social lives. Utilizing grounded theory and adapting the consensual qualitative methods described by Hill, Knox, Thompson, Williams, and Hess (2005), seven conceptual categories and additional sub-categories were derived from the coding process. These conceptual categories and subthemes were found: (a) hearing loss, consisting of severity, age of diagnosis, assistive devices, and familial hearing status, (b) sporting background, sporting initiation, and current team standing, (c) parental roles, consisting of parental support of hearing and parental support of sport, (d) team experience, consisting of teammates, coaches, and opponents, (e) adaptations to being hard of hearing, consisting of working with coaches, on the field and in the classroom, (f) self-esteem/self-concept, consisting of biculturalism, self identity, and on the field mentality, and (g) benefits of sports, consisting of confidence, friends, and other. Participants also completed the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, which provides a total self-concept score and scores across six subscales: physical appearance and attributes, intellectual and school status, happiness and satisfaction, freedom from anxiety, behavioral adjustment, and popularity. All participants scored "average" or "above average" on total self-concept and the six subscales. The population did not consist of enough participants for a quantitative analysis.

Feldman, Marcos. "Subsidizing Entertainment Projects As A Strategy For Urban Economic Development: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Miami’s American Airlines Arena." FIU Digital Commons, 2005. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/716.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the practice of subsidizing entertainment projects as economic development strategy through a case study of the American Airlines Arena (AAA). Subsidy proponents argued that it would generate new tax revenue and jobs, and enhance the city’s image and pride. This rationale neglects factors that mitigate the economic impact of arenas and fails to consider the social costs. The AAA subsidy is evaluated using a cost-benefit method that has been underutilized in academic research. The economic impact is analyzed by estimating the fiscal return on the public’s investment and the number and quality of new jobs created. The social costs are considered in light of Miami’s economic development history and the policy implications are discussed. The AAA subsidy results in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses over the term of the public-private partnership and created a negligible number of low quality jobs. Furthermore, the AAA subsidy may have exacerbated relations between residents and leaders by prioritizing the leisure spending of visitors over the needs of inner city residents.

The research aimed to investigate the current status, differences and relationships among residents’ perceived benefits of sports tourism, attitudes toward sports tourism development and willingness of sport tourism development. The participants were residents in Puli Township. The questionnaires were distributed from May 27th to 28th, 2017 at the destination of the marathon race and water competiton. A total of 250 questionnaires were distributed and 173 effective questionnaires were returned with an effective response rate of 69.2%. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent Sample t Test, One-way ANOVA and Multiple Regression. The results revealed that: (1) The residents were male, relatively young, had low household income, and worked in the commercial industry; besides, the majority were event participants and the average time of transportation was about 15 minutes; (2) The highest mean score was attitude towards sport tourism development and perceived benefits of sport tourism was ranked lastly among the variables; (3) Different demographic variables failed to demonstrated significant effects on the perceived benefits of sports tourism, attitudes toward sports tourism development and willingness of sport tourism development; (4) Perceived benefits of sport tourism was found to be positively related to attitude towards sport tourism development as well as willingness towards sport tourism development; (5) Attitude towards sport tourism development was found to be positively related to willingness towards sport tourism development; (6) Residents’ attitude towards sport tourism development was found to be a link upon perceived benefits of sport tourism and willingness of sport tourism development. Based on the results, the researcher suggested the organizers can develop managerial strategies in order to enhance attitude towards sport tourism development as well as willingness of sports tourism development (e.g., promoting the development of community tourism through sport tourism events) so ad to improve the quality of the event. In addition, the organizers should design more diverse tour packages in order to enhance the participants’ willingness to revisit the event in the future.

Abstract:
Despite the lack of clarity on how sport delivers the benefits intended, sport continues to be positioned as a panacea for social disparities (Coalter, 2010). The inconsistent and sometimes nonexistent evaluation of sport has raised doubt about sport’s capacity to deliver the benefits desired (Broh, 2002; Chalip, 2006; Coakley, 1979; Coakley, 1993). In worse cases, sport has been considered complicit in reinforcing the same oppressive social structures that created the initial need for its intervention (Hartmann & Depro, 2006; Hartmann, 2003; Shaw, Frisby, Cunningham, & Fink, 2006; Spaaij, 2009). The belief that sport can provide benefits stems from the recognition that there are two groups of people: the empowered (i.e., those who employ sport for development), and the disempowered (i.e., those who are targeted to participate in these programs). Darnell (2007) asserts that “within the development through sport movement, a well-intentioned and benevolent ‘mission’ of training, empowering, and assisting is not only based upon, but to an extent requires, the establishment of a dichotomy between the empowered and the disempowered, the vocal and the silent, the ‘knowers’ and the known” (561). The crux of this assertion lies in the notion that the benefits provided through sport serve as social control mechanisms by reifying the values of the empowered as those that should be desired and reinforcing the social hierarchies that oppress the disempowered through the controlled (unequal) allocation of resources. Latent in the intent of these sport-for-development programs is the need to continually identify and socially anchor the historically disempowered. Social myths about their inferiority overshadow how social class, further distinguished by race and gender, was historically fashioned by the unequal distribution of resources and overpower the voices of those who are marginalized through this process. Therefore, what is considered “beneficial” becomes a contest between which group can put the most resources behind their ideals as opposed to the expressed needs of the participants (Coalter, 2007; Darnell, 2007; Spaaij, 2009). To better understand what shapes perceptions about the benefits obtained from sport participation, the purpose of this study was threefold: (1) to determine what players and coaches perceive as the benefits obtained by players through basketball and what benefits they perceive to be important; (2) to determine whether players and coaches perceive that players obtain benefits to the same degree that they feel they are important; and (3) to understand the differences in these perceptions based on gender, race, SES, and role (i.e., player or coach). Upon receiving IRB approval, a pilot study was conducted on high school athletes (N= 450) to ascertain the benefits they obtained from high school basketball. In SPSS, exploratory factor analyses with varimax rotation were conducted on 109 benefits identified in the literature to determine which groups of benefits were salient to high school basketball players. From the initial factor analysis, 23 factors emerged. In addition to feedback from sport-for-development researchers, coaches, and players, a second pilot study (N= 69) was conducted to refine the categories of benefits players obtained. The final instrument contained 41 items in ten categories of benefits: Academic Resiliency, Self-Expansion, Self-Discipline, Analytical Thinking Skills, Moral Value Development, College Preparation, Leadership Training, and Relationships with Others, Sense of Community, and Career Development. Cronbach’s alpha was used to test reliability of each category and all were found to be acceptable for this study Nunnally (1978). The instrument was available in paper form and electronic form for players and coaches to complete in a four-week period. The final sample included 237 high school basketball players and 164 high school basketball coaches from Texas. First, two MANOVAs (one for benefits obtained and one for importance) were conducted to examine the potential interactions among gender, race, SES, and role in perceptions of benefits obtained and the importance of those benefits. Results of the MANOVAs were considered significant at α = .10. Next, paired-sample t-tests were conducted to determine whether players and coaches perceived that players received the same benefits that were deemed important. Finally, one sample t-tests (against the neutral point of the scale, 4) were used to determine which benefits were perceived to be obtained and which were considered important by players and coaches. T-tests were considered significant using Bonferroni criteria. The results of the MANOVAs included a three-way interaction between race, gender, and role that was significant in determining the perceived benefits obtained through sport. These results reinforce the need to analyze sport from a transdisciplinary lens to understanding the personal and structural factors shaping the needs of sport participants and subsequently creating culturally responsive sport component to provide the desired benefits. SES was used as a proxy for social class, more specifically, for one's access to resources, and was not found to be significant in determining the perception of benefits obtained from sport. This finding suggests that people marginalized by class differences may have a false consciousness about the benefits sport can provide despite the evidence that these individuals are not receiving benefits at levels comparable to more privileged groups and even worse, that sport participation can be detrimental to their development. In light of the findings that African-American women perceive more strongly that they obtain benefits from sports than do their male counterparts, further exploration is needed on how the experience of sport is influenced by hegemonic structures based on race and gender. To this end, practical implications for implementing sport-for-development programs including promoting culturally responsive training and implementation of programs (Ladson-Billings, 1990) that employ the resources available to foster the intended benefits and more importantly, to create more sustainable programs. Another key finding was that race, gender, role, and SES were significant in influencing the benefits perceived to be important. While the results showed that "sport is good" for providing the benefits observed, the differences in how well these benefits are obtained by race and gender suggest that further investigation is needed in understanding what are the mechanisms that allow sport to be "good" in providing these groups with benefits and in determining how athletes perceive sport as the channel for receiving benefits. Both findings push for more organic and long-term studies in the benefits of sport participation. Using the tenets of Critical Race Theory, theoretical implications include employing a socioecological approach to understanding how needs and benefits are conceptualized, the use of more emic approaches to studying these concepts, and providing more agency to the individuals in researching and understanding their needs and the benefits they desire from sport (along with the potentially negative implications of sport participation). The results promote the need to look specifically at one's access to resources, race, and gender in determining the components necessary and sufficient to providing benefits through sport. The concept of hegemony posits that these factors are not conditions inherent to an individual but identities and social positions constructed by the larger society. Therefore, sport researchers must create concepts of researching "needs" and "benefits" that are reflective of the individual as well as cultural and environmental factors that shape sport participation. These concepts must also be organic, taking into consideration that factors influencing the needs of participants are changing in concert with social norms and their effects on one's identity and access to resources. The results of this study also provide practical implications for recognizing that sport does not exist in vacuum and to be effective in providing participants with the intended benefits, sport must be culturally responsive (Gay, 2000; Ladson-Billings, 1992). To this end, sport administrators should be mindful of the cultural and structural factors that shape the students’ environment and consequently their identities and needs, by implementing sport components that work on multiple levels. Administrators and participants should also examine the ways that sport may impact them in negative ways, particularly if those negative impacts are masked by potential benefits (Bruening, 2005; Glover, 2007; Harrison, Sailes, Rotich, & Bimper, 2011). Giving voice to the participants, engaging school and community officials in providing access to resources, and using goal-setting to help students exercise more agency in shaping their sport experience were also practical implications from this study.

The scale of sport game tourism grows very fast in our country. It is quiet obvious since there are more large sport games held in recent years. There are plenty of natural and cultural resources to develop tourism with these superiorities in Penghu, the largest offshore Island in Taiwan. The natural superior environment of Penghu gives it tourism development strength..The Penghu government never stops planning to hold activities like sport games to bring commercial opportunities. Holding games not only improves the atmosphere of proper leisure activities, draws a large number of competitors and tourists, but also promote the tourism development of Penghu. The purpose of this study was to analyze the leisure benefits of petanque sport games participants and the advantages of promoting petanque games to local area and to popularize the actitivity to the public. The research adopted the method of questionnaire survey. The subjects were participants of 2011 Chrysanthemum Cup Petanque Game held in Penghu. 430 questionnaires were distributed, and 413 valid samples were collected. The collected data were analyzed through Descriptive Statistics, Independent Samples T Test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe’s method, Paired Samples T-Test, Pearson’s Product-moment Correlation Coefficients. The results were: 1. To rank the local development benefits of the participants of Petangue in the offshore Island (Penghu), the score of the social benefit is the highest, the cutural benefit is the second, and the third is the economic benefit. In the leisure benefits part, the highest score goes to the social contact benefit, the second is mental benefit, and the third is physiological benefit. Totally the leisure benefit is larger than the local development benefit. 2. The differences of the local development benefits of the participants of Petangue in the offshore Island (Penghu) are only obviously observed in age, occupation, and identity they involved. The differences of the leisure benefits are obviously observed in age, occupation, monthly income, experience of Petanque, the number of sporting days per week, sports game spent, and identity they involved. 3. There is a significant positive correlation between the local development benefits and the leisure benefits of the participants of Petangue in the offshore Island (Penghu).

Over the past decade, there has been increased attention in international development literature on the concept of ‘development through sport’. Sport has long been used in various capacities of development practice especially in lower income countries. Various studies on sport development in rural areas have been undertaken. However, they do not provide a clear explanation of the major factors that constrain the growth and improvement of sport in rural communities in most developing countries. This study focused on identifying the factors that limit sport development in the rural areas of Mutoko District in Zimbabwe. A mixed method approach was followed. The first phase was exploratory and qualitative in nature. In phase 2, quantitative studies, which were mainly confirmatory were carried out. Youth (males and females), men, women, disabled people, school heads, District administrators, club coaches, chiefs and headmen were the respondents. Focus group discussions, participant observation, semi structured interviewing and assistive devices were used to gather data in the first phase. The Thematic Content Analysis was used to analyse the data. A questionnaire containing both open and closed-ended questions was used to confirm the results of phase one. Frequencies were calculated using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0. Sport development in Mutoko District was found to be poor, mainly as a result of multiple challenges such as inadequate funding, poor sporting infrastructure, low stakeholder support, shortage of qualified coaches, and lack of appropriate attire and equipment. Schools played a significant role in providing sporting opportunities for the youth in the District. Male youth were reported to be more readily participating part in sporting activities compared to their female counterparts. This was said to be due to the existence of only one professional sport club for males in the District. Apart from this, there was poor awareness and appreciating of the benefits of participating in sporting activities. Based on these results, it was recommended that government support in terms of funding and availing sport infrastructure was crucial in promoting sport development. Grassroots community members and other local stakeholders could support sporting activities through schools.

As sport increased in popularity in the nineteenth century, the emerging mass media were there to both contribute to public interest and then to benefit from it, creating a synergism that has lasted until the present. The media–sport partnership mainly promoted the development of spectator sports, both amateur and professional, submerging (though not ignoring) participant sports.

Abstract:
Success in youth sport is underpinned by a range of chronological age- and biological maturity status-related factors which affect performance in a sex- and sport-specific manner. Pubertal changes in body size, shape, composition, muscle metabolism, muscle strength, aerobic fitness, and anaerobic fitness strongly influence sport performance but biological clocks run at different rates. As selection and retention in youth sport is based on chronological age, competition is not always on a level playing field. Young athletes benefit from exercise training but there is no convincing evidence of the existence of a ‘maturation threshold’ below which the effects of training will be minimal or will not occur, or of ‘windows of opportunity’ during which training effects are enhanced. Participation in sport provides a positive environment for the promotion of personal development but evidence is accumulating that elite youth sport also presents risks to current and future health and well-being.

This chapter discusses the development and financing for stadiums by the teams in the largest American professional sports leagues, including MLB, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, and MLS, and the role of government in that process. With the exception of antitrust issues, there may be no aspect of American sports in which the government is as involved as the construction and financing of the stadiums in which the games are played. Stadium development, initially a private matter, entered the public interest because of the dramatic growth in construction costs coupled with the appearance of economic and societal benefits to a region that hosts a major league team. It will come as no surprise that venue projects are challenging and often controversial. This chapter analyzes how teams, leagues, and government entities negotiate for venue development projects, touching on the legal, practical, and political challenges that have emerged over the years.

Physical activity plays a significant role in the well-being of a child. Long-term health benefits depend on continuation of physical activity, which enhances well-being and favours balanced development. Injuries can counter the beneficial effects of sports participation, especially if a child is unable to continue participating because of any residual effects of injury. Prevention of sports injuries has been largely implemented in the last few years. This chapter reviews common lower limb injuries in children with an emphasis on injury management. Sports-related injuries of the lower limb in children mostly cover ligament injuries, fractures, epiphyseal injuries, and apophysitis. It also cover the most frequent approaches for the management of these injuries, including conservative management for undisplaced fractures or partial ligamentous ruptures. Surgery is recommended for displaced fractures or complete ligamentous injuries.

This article discusses the risks associated with nanomaterials. The use of nanomaterials in consumer products and industrial applications is becoming more prevalent owing to their range of benefits. Nanomaterials have found uses in energy production, home appliances, water treatment, novel therapeutic delivery techniques and dietary supplements, consumer electronics, and sports equipment. While considerable attention has been given to the likely commercial advantages associated with nanomaterials, less emphasis has been placed on the development of a systematic approach for characterizing the human health and environmental risks from exposure to nanomaterials. This article first considers the use of nanomaterials in consumer products and the characterization of nanomaterials before describing a systematic evaluation of the hazards associated with nanomaterials. It also examines pulmonary exposure assessment and dermal exposure assessment, along with risk assessment for exposure to nanomaterials. Finally, it outlines research priorities for the development of more refined estimates of nanomaterial risk.

Abstract Scholars from diverse disciplines are increasingly concerned with the benefits generated by the practice of physical activity in the natural environment on individuals (Gomila Serra, 2014; Jirásek et al., 2016). This chapter attempts to shed light on the various scientific approaches that confirm this beneficial relationship. It also contributes to the holistic and integral conception of the human being, made up of different dimensions: physical, mental, emotional and social (Sandell et al., 2009; Borkowski, 2011). After an introductory approach to the relationship between outdoor sports and the integral development of their participants, an empirical study is shown. A five-day Nordic skiing camp is used to evaluate the effects of this practice on the individuals and on the group.

There is enough literature based on empirical evidence to show that the benefits claimed for Mega-sport events, tourism and development are exaggerated. The pressure to deliver infrastructure and sporting facilities does not address issues of social displacement, land acquisition, environmental degradation, violation of worker’s rights, disruption of residents’ lifestyle area issues and overrides traditional participatory planning processes. This chapter explores the economic, environmental and social impacts of mega sports events– through a focused analysis of the developments associated with Commonwealth Games (CWG)2010 in Delhi. The case study developed by EQUATIONS concludes by highlighting that the trend of mega sport events, city beautification and evictions is not a story of the CWG alone but has continued even during the FIFA U17 – World Cup that took place in Kolkata among other venues across the country in October 2017.

Abstract:
Abstract Sport organizations are increasingly using corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs to pursue financial and public relations objectives by addressing social issues. As organizations face pressure to demonstrate CSR bona fides, it has been claimed that sport may be well-positioned to serve as a CSR vehicle. Sport-based CSR research assumes that to be the case, thereby relying on descriptions and advocacy that do not critically examine the intersections between leadership and CSR but that do presuppose or assert positive benefits from CSR. Social and managerial theories have been applied haphazardly, while fundamental theoretical imperatives regarding social agency, market functioning, and human behavior have been overlooked. Those imperatives could help to explain choices for CSR program design and implementation, as well as CSR program effects. Future research can better serve the development of informative and applicable theory by modeling the structure of contingencies, including economic concerns, facing CSR leadership in varied contexts.

This chapter engages with the scholarship that emphasizes the benefits of mega-sporting events to host countries, from increasing their international prestige and influence on global politics, through to mobilizing national pride, and serving as a tool of economic development. This chapter also investigates the benefits gained by Lebanon as a result of hosting four regional mega-sporting events since the civil war ended in 1990. Additionally, it examines the similarities and differences between these four events by exploring, in particular, the tangible and intangible legacies. Apart from a review of academic and press articles, primary data was collected by interviewing key stakeholders in the Lebanese sports sector who were involved in the events. Our conclusion is that while the events provided Lebanon with some short-term promotional benefits, they introduced a heavy financial burden, especially in relation to stadium and sports hall construction. Resources to maintain those facilities became a source for corruption.

ABSTRACT Volunteers are a valuable form of assets for many organizations, as they help reduce costs, ease the budget of full-time staff. Significant benefits from volunteering are observed in healthcare, education, sports and other areas of the economy. It contributes to the development of personal skills, helps to socialize the individual. Through it, it is possible to make contacts for possible future employment. The organization and conducting a number of international sports events in Bulgaria, combined with the demand for volunteers, led the organizers to create strategies for recruiting and managing this human resource. In an attempt to implement this activity, it is necessary to know both the points of satisfaction for volunteers and the factors influencing their future intentions to participate in sports initiatives. The object of study are volunteers who took part in various sports events - Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup 2022, WIZZ AIR SOFIA MARATHON, 9th International Championship in Rhythmic Gymnastics “Cup Nuance NSA”, events from the calendar of the Bulgarian Federation Sport for All, and the European Club Cup in Archery – Russe 2022. Its purpose is to explore the importance of various factors in the management of work with volunteers - motivating, their preliminary training, in terms of their satisfaction and more. In the course of the study, an online survey was conducted containing indicators for determining the satisfaction of volunteers in the listed events. The obtained data show that among the studied audience the satisfaction with the listed factors is relatively high. There are some weaknesses in the preliminary organization and distribution of volunteers in the overall organization.

The development of technology and transportation facilities allow people for weekend getaways. Nowadays, instead of waiting for longer holidays, people can experience different cultures and history, attend sport events, visit friends or do shopping in a different city during a short time length. This is a rapidly increasing trend in both Europe and the rest of the world which mobilized local officials; thus, city marketing, urban tourism and finally the most recent concept of learning regions all have gained importance. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship among learning regions, urban tourism and regional economic development in the light of relevant literature. Today, countries, regions and cities are trying to unveil and share their unique local wealth in order to show up at the international arena. In this respect, through branding and marketing of a region (city, town) by restructuring it, regional development will have great benefits. This study will also provide guidelines for local authorities in particular.

The conception stage of the design project aims to help the comprehension of the problem to be worked on, seeking to provide the best possible experience for the users. Prototyping stage is essential to make the ideas tangible for the validation of usability, functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics, among others. However, this whole process can take a lot of time and rework. This article presents a case study of the application of the Design Thinking methodology for the redesign of an Assistive Technology - the bike for Frame Running - with the objective of demonstrating the benefits of using a low-fidelity model as a tool for generating insights and optimizing the time required for digital testing in 3D software and design conception. The development of this project sought to integrate theory and practice through a mixed non-interventionist and interventionist methodology with a qualitative basis, acting in a cyclical and non-linear way, through bibliographic and documentary research, use of low-fidelity models, case study, direct observation, structural simulation, ergonomic study and prototyping. The results obtained, using alternative low-cost materials, favored the reduction of the time of the design process, allowing the interaction and agile identification of critical points of performance, ergonomics, aesthetics, functionality, strength and analysis of the appropriate construction processes, contributing to the redesign of the Frame Running bike, the dissemination of the sport, the quality of life and inclusion of disabled people.

"In this article, we focus on the intended development of digital literacy of pupils in all schools, which is presented in the Strategy of the Education Policy in the Czech Republic until 2030+, issued by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in the year 2020. The use of information technologies needs to be integrated into the methods and content of various subjects. From this point of view, we consider the training of future mathematics teachers. How to use digital technology in teaching mathematics? We deal with a questionnaire survey conducted among students of mathematics teaching at the Faculty of Education, Palacký University in Olomouc in 2021. The objectives of the research were to determine the current readiness of future mathematics teachers to use digital technologies, their awareness of the benefits of digital technology in mathematics in teaching, their view on appropriate use of digital technologies in teaching and their attitude to mastering the basics of programming and the subsequent use of this skill in teaching mathematics. We analyze and process the data obtained from the questionnaire using standard statistical methods. These findings are very beneficial for 21st century teacher educators. The ability to properly use digital technologies in teaching mathematics has an undeniable pedagogical benefit for the education of a new generation of students. The results of the survey show that students, who are mostly 19 to 21 years old, are acutely aware of the importance of digital technologies today."

In school classroom, a child born soon after the selection period’s cut-off date (early born children) may benefit by up to a full year in physical and psychological development compared with a child born just before the cut-off date (late born children). This phenomenon is called the “relative age effect” (RAE). RAE is defined as the consequence of age differences between individuals within the same cohort, either in school or on sports teams (Musch & Grondin, 2001). This study examines the effect size of RAE in physical and psychological development and discusses educational problems faced by kindergarten teachers due to this RAE. Data were collected from 100 five-year-old Japanese children (60 male, 40 female) and their kindergarten teachers. Significant main effects of birth month category on physical development and on psychological development were found (early born children were more developed than late born children). The effect size of RAE in physical development was greater than that in psychological development. We concluded that the RAE existed in physical and psychological development among young children. Further, RAE appeared greatly on physical than on psychological development. Thus, we propose that kindergarten teachers could benefit from an awareness of the RAE.

Abstract:
Abstract Advanced packages such as 2.5D will continue to grow in demand as performance increases are needed in various applications. Failure analysis must adapt to the changes in the interfaces, materials and structures being developed and now utilized. Traditional techniques and tools used for selectively removing materials to isolate and analyze defects need to evolve alongside these packages. A CF4-free Microwave Induced Plasma (MIP) process is used to remove underfill (UF) with minimal alteration of other materials on the samples, a process which has become more difficult on 2.5D modules. UF is removed using this MIP process to allow subsequent analysis on interposer interconnects and ìbumps in crosssection. SEM inspection, Electron Beam Absorbed Current (EBAC), and FIB are techniques used post cross-sectional UF removal of these 2.5D structures. The benefits of the specific MIP process through case studies are presented. Specifically, the use of an automatic cleaning step and a CF4-free downstream O2 plasma allow easy removal of UF without damaging other structures of interest with little tool recipe development.

Abstract:
In football, as in other sports, there is a tendency for athletes, or accelerators, to mature faster. This is a typical trend, as this type of athlete can run faster, jump further, and perform other activities relatively better than their peers. The authors wanted to emphasize the negative trend related to the Latvian football system. It can be seen that coaches pay too much attention to accelerators, although additional attention should be paid to footballers who mature physiologically later. The study’s authors want to emphasize the problem that needs to be solved, which is relevant in football and other sports. A similar situation can be observed in other sports. Coaches pay too much attention to a quick result without investing additional work in further development, emphasizing athletes who mature physically a little slower. The authors conducted a study comparing two groups of respondents – accelerators and retardants. Within the framework of the research, two tasks were performed – purposeful work in improving movement skills for 15–16-year-old athletes was emphasized. Task 2 – to compare the results without and with the ball because the exercise with the ball characterizes the movement skills – the ability to drive the ball, partially reducing the benefits of maturity. The data were obtained from physical tests by combining them with the Microsoft Exel program. In the conclusions, both groups of respondents showed significant progress in technical performance.

Abstract:
Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi and other beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms, such as Rhizobium bacteria, must locate and infect a host plant before either symbiont profits. Although benefits of the VAM association for increased phosphorous uptake have been widely documented, attempts to improve the fungus and to produce agronomically useful amounts of inoculum have failed due to a lack of in vitro production methods. This project was designed to extend our prior observation that the alfalfa flavonoid quercetin promoted spore germination and hyphal growth of VAM fungi in the absence of a host plant. On the Israeli side of the project, a detailed examination of changes in flavonoids and flavonoid-biosynthetic enzymes during the early stages of VAM development in alfalfa found that VAM fungi elicited and then suppressed transcription of a plant gene coding for chalcone isomerase, which normally is associated with pathogenic infections. US workers collaborated in the identification of flavonoid compounds that appeared during VAM development. On the US side, an in vitro system for testing the effects of plant compounds on fungal spore germination and hyphal growth was developed for use, and intensive analyses of natural products released from alfalfa seedlings grown in the presence and absence of microorganisms were conducted. Two betaines, trigonelline and stachydrine, were identified as being released from alfalfa seeds in much higher concentrations than flavonoids, and these compounds functioned as transcriptional signals to another alfalfa microsymbiont, Rhizobium meliloti. However, these betaines had no effect on VAM spore germination or hyphal growth i vitro. Experiments showed that symbiotic bacteria elicited exudation of the isoflavonoids medicarpin and coumestrol from legume roots, but neither compound promoted growth or germination of VAM fungi in vitro. Attempts to look directly in alfalfa rhizosphere soil for microbiologically active plant products measured a gradient of nod-gene-inducing activity in R. meliloti, but no novel compounds were identified for testing in the VAM fungal system in vitro. Israeli field experiments on agricultural applications of VAM were very successful and developed methods for using VAM to overcome stunting in peanuts and garlic grown in Israel. In addition, deleterious effects of soil solarization on growth of onion, carrot and wheat were linked to effects on VAM fungi. A collaborative combination of basic and applied approaches toward enhancing the agronomic benefits of VAM asociations produced new knowledge on symbiotic biology and successful methods for using VAM inocula under field conditions

Abstract:
Objectives. The major aim of the proposed research was to study thrips-TSWV relationships and their role in the epidemiology of the virus with the aim of using this knowledge to reduce crop losses occurring due to epidemics. Our specific objectives were: To determine the major factors involved in virus outbreaks, including: a) identifying the thrips species involved in virus dissemination and their relative role in virus spread; b) determining the virus sources among wild and cultivated plants throughout the season and their role in virus spread, and, c) determining how temperature and molecular variations in isolates impact virus replication in plants and insects and impact the transmission cycle. Background to the topic. Tospoviruses are among the most important emerging plant viruses that impact production of agricultural and ornamental crops. Evolution of tospoviruses and their relationships with thrips vector species have been of great interest because of crop damage caused world wide and the complete absence of suitable methods of control. Tospoviruses threaten crops in Israel and the United States. By understanding the factors contributing to epidemics and the specific relationships between thrips species and particular tospoviruses we hope that new strategies for control can be developed that will benefit agriculture in both Israel and the United States. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements. We determined that at least three tospoviruses were involved in epidemics in Israel and the United States, tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) and iris yellow spot virus (IYSV). We detected and characterized INSV for the first time in Israel and, through our efforts, IYSV was detected and characterized for the first time in both countries. We demonstrated that many thrips species were present in commercial production areas and trap color influenced thrips catch. Frankliniella occidentalis was the major vector species of INSV and TSWV and populations varied in transmission efficiency. Thrips tabaci is the sole known vector of IYSV and experiments in both countries indicated that F. occidentalis is not a vector of this new tospovirus. Alternate plant hosts were identified for each virus. A new monitoring system combining sticky cards and petunia indicator plants was developed to identify sources of infective thrips. This system has been highly successful in the U.S. and was used to demonstrate to growers that removal of plant sources of infective thrips has a dramatic impact on virus incidence. Finally, a putative thrips receptor mediating acquisition of TSWV was discovered. Implications, scientific and agricultural. Our findings have contributed to new control measures that will benefit agriculture. Identification of a putative thrips receptor for TSWV and our findings relative to thrips/tospovirus specificity have implications for development of innovative new control strategies.
