Abstract:
A new measure of motivation toward sport has been developed in French, namely the Echelle de Motivation vis-à-vis les Sports. Two studies were conducted to translate and validate this new measure in English. The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) consists of seven subscales that measure three types of Intrinsic Motivation (IM; IM to Know, IM to Accomplish Things, and IM to Experience Stimulation), three forms of regulation for Extrinsic Motivation (Identified, Introjected, and External), and Amotivation. The first study confirmed the factor structure of the scale and revealed a satisfactory level of internal consistency. Correlations among the subscales revealed a simplex pattern confirming the self-determination continuum and the construct validity of the scale. Gender differences were similar to those obtained with the French-Canadian version. The more self-determined forms of motivation were associated with more positive responses on related consequences. In a second study, the SMS was administered on two occasions and revealed adequate test-retest reliability.

Abstract:
Abstract The study investigated psychometric properties of the Sport Motivation Scale-6 (SMS-6), assessing intrinsic regulation, four extrinsic regulation constructs, and amotivation among athletes competing at a regional and national level. In particular, we tested the factorial structure of SMS-6, its short-term stability, and the associations of SMS-6 constructs with self-efficacy, self-esteem, motivational climate, and satisfaction with sport performance. Participants were 197 athletes (57.4% women), representing team (54.7%) and individual disciplines. The measurement was repeated at the three-week follow-up (n = 107). Results yielded support for the six first-order factor structure (three second-order factors). More autonomous forms of motivation were related to higher levels of self-efficacy, performance satisfaction, and taskoriented motivational climate in sport organizations. Sequential multiple mediation analysis showed that the association between general self-efficacy and performance satisfaction at a follow-up was mediated by introjected regulation and personal-barrier self-efficacy.

Abstract:
<p>The aim of the research was to evaluate the structural validity of the Lithuanian version of the Sports Motivation Scale in the context of the disability sport. This study included 66 athletes with hearing and visual impairment (45 men and 21 women). The average age of the research participants was 26.5 ± 11.7 years, they used to participate in sport activity for 10.1 ± 7.6 years. Athletes who participated in the research were representatives of goalball, tennis, athletics, swimming, basketball and other sports. 39 athletes were prize winners in World and European championships. The participants of the research completed the questionnaire based on the Sports Motivation Scale (SMS) already adapted in Lithuania. Data were processed using <em>Jamovi </em>program. SMS psychometric parameters demonstrated good internal scale compatibility. In the confirmatory factor analysis, a 4-factor model suitable for data analysis (CFI – 0.881; TLI - 0.863; RMSEA - 0.0710; χ2 / df 1.439) was identified which comprised 20 SMS items. The structure of the model consisted of factors that characterize athletes' intrinsic motivation – “to discover” (1), intrinsic motivation – “to feel self-improvement” (2), extrinsic motivation – “need for social dependency” (3) and “amotivation” (4).</p><p>Tyrimo tikslas buvo įvertinti Sporto motyvacijos skalės lietuviškos versijos struktūrinį validumą neįgaliųjų sporto kontekste. Tyrime dalyvavo 66 klausos ir regos negalią turintys sportininkai (45 vyrai, 21 moterys). Vidutinis tyrimo dalyvių amžius buvo 26,5±11,7 m., treniruočių patirtis 10,1±7,6 m. Tyrime dalyvavę sportininkai atstovavo šioms sporto šakoms: golbolas, tenisas, lengvoji atletika, plaukimas, krepšinis et al. 39 sportininkai užėmė prizines vietas pasaulio ir Europos čempionatuose. Tyrimo dalyviai užpildė klausimyną, kurio pagrindą sudarė jau Lietuvoje adaptuota Sporto motyvacijos skalė (SMS). Duomenys apdoroti Jamovi programa. SMS psichometriniai parametrai parodė gera skalės vidinį suderinamumą. Atliekant patvirtinančiąja faktorinę analizę buvo išskirtas duomenų analizei tinkamas 4 faktorių modelis (CFI – 0,881; TLI – 0,863; RMSEA – 0,0710; χ2 / df 1,439); kurį sudarė 20 SMS teiginių. Modelio struktūrą sudarė faktoriai, kurie apibūdina sportininkų vidinę motyvaciją-atrasti (1), vidinė motyvacija-jausti tobulėjimą (2), išorinė motyvacija-socialinio priklausomumo poreikis (3) ir amotyvacija (4).</p><p> </p><p> </p>

Abstract:
Motivation, particularly different types of motivation (i.e., intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation), is a topic that has been of interest to both psychologists and sport psychologists. One area of interest in sport psychology is the assessment of different types of motivation. The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) (Pelletier et al., 1995) was created to assess an athlete’s intrinsic motivation, extrinsic-motivation, and a motivation toward sport participation. The psychometric properties of the SMS, however, have not been tested on a sample of college athletes in the U.S., which is an important component if researchers and applied sport psychologists are to use the SMS with this population. A total of 270 U.S. college athletes participated in this study. Results provided some evidence for the reliability and validity of the SMS for this population, although a confirmatory factor analysis yielded relatively poor fit indices, indicating problems with model specification. A “piecewise” model testing approach, in which different components of the model were tested separately, indicated that the biggest problems with model specification may involve the extrinsic and amotivation components of the measure.

Abstract:
Building upon Deci's and Ryan (1985) Self-determination theory as well as the sportive behavioral correlates of the model of Commitment (Scanlan et al., 1976), this study tries to establish the relationship between motivation and commitment in youth sport. For this purpose 454 young competitive soccer players answered the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) and the Sport Commitment Questionnaire (SCQ) during the regular season. The SMS measures the three dimensions of the Motivational continuum (the Amotivation, the Extrinsic Motivation and the Intrinsic Motivation). The SCQ measures the Sportive Commitment and its composing factors such as the Enjoyment, the Alternatives to the sport, and the Social Pressure. Our findings provided a clear pattern of the influence of motivation in sport enjoyment and commitment, outlining the positive contribution of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to enjoyment and commitment. Amotivation, contributes positively to alternatives to sport and negatively to enjoyment and commitment. It should be noted that extrinsic motivation has a higher contribution to enjoyment whereas intrinsic motivation has a higher contribution to commitment.

Abstract:
<p>This study aims to validate the Arabic version of the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-28). SMS-28 is the English version of the French-Canadian scale l’Echelle de Motivation Dans Les Sport, which is based on the self-determination theory. The scale can reliably and validly measure the different forms of motivation toward sport. It consists of different subscales of intrinsic motivation (IM-to know, IM-to accomplish, IM-to experience), extrinsic motivation (identified regulation, introjected regulation, external regulation) and amotivation. The Arabic version of the scale was translated using the transcultural translation procedure. The final script of the translated scale was distributed to a sample of participants, which consists of a group of 208 students at the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Jordan. The students were randomly selected and completed the scale voluntarily. Analytical analysis including factor analysis, Cronbach Alpha and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted. Results of the factor analysis reflected the validity of the scale, Cronbach Alpha showed adequate levels of internal consistency, while correlation values between the subscales were acceptable and reflected the motivation continuum suggested by the self-determination theory. Thus, an Arabic version of the sport motivation scale has emerged. Future studies using the Arabic version of the scale are encouraged. </p>

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the Spanish version of the Sport Motivation Scale-II (S-SMS-II) in adolescent athletes. The sample included 766 Spanish adolescents (263 females and 503 males; average age = 13.71 ± 1.30 years old). The methodological steps established by the International Test Commission were followed. Four measurement models were compared employing the maximum likelihood estimation (with six, five, three, and two factors). Then, factorial invariance analyses were conducted and the effect sizes were calculated. Finally, the reliability was calculated using Cronbach’s alpha, omega, and average variance extracted coefficients. The five-factor S-SMS-II showed the best indices of fit (Cronbach’s alpha .64 to .74; goodness of fit index .971, root mean square error of approximation .044, comparative fit index .966). Factorial invariance was also verified across gender and between sport-federated athletes and non-federated athletes. The proposed S-SMS-II is discussed according to previous validated versions (English, Portuguese, and Chinese).

Abstract:

Method: Transversal descriptive study, having Brazilian futsal athletes as target audience, participants of the 2013 Feminine Futsal League. It was applied a questionnaire created by the researchers and the profile of motivation was evaluated through the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS). Results: The majorities of athletes are adults, of socio-economic classification B, are studying with integral funding, started playing at the streets or school, with less than 9 years old. Also, they would like to dedicate more time to futsal and the majority is paid to play. Being called-up is associated with being adult, having finished high school or attending post-graduation, receiving integral funding and being invited, indicated or hired from other team by their current team. The average score of the athletes for intrinsic motivation (IM) were higher than the score of extrinsic motivation (EM). The average of demotivation dimensions presented the lowest values. The athletes that were studying present higher IM. The athletes with 10 years or more in futsal were the most demotivated. Conclusion: This research sought to describe the profile of athletes that dispute the most important futsal national championship, besides describing the characteristics of the athletes that were called up for the Brazilian national team. Starting from these findings, it was notices an important encouragement to education continued between the athletes and also a high score of intrinsic motivation that seems to be connected with studying. The demotivational scores were low, however, the increase of years of practice may lead to higher scores of demotivation in the sport<br>Objetivos: Caracterizar as atletas de futsal feminino de alto rendimento no Brasil, verificar as características das atletas convocadas para a seleção brasileira em 2013, bem como, identificar o perfil motivacional e avaliar os fatores associados à motivação para o esporte entre as atletas.

Abstract:
Studies in Sweden have shown that about 80% of all youth in Sweden have participated in organized sport during their upbringing but at the age of 20 only 50% of these continue. There have been several attempts to understand why youth stop participating in sports but few aimed to understand why they continue. The objective of this study was to examine if there is a difference in motivation between youth (in the ages of 16-20 years) who participate in recreational and elite sports. The study was carried out as a quantitative survey where both recreational (n=35) and elite athletes (n=33) particpated. The study used a Sport Motivation Scale questionnaire translated into Swedish. The results showed three significant differences between the two grouops; amotivation, intrinsic motivation to learn and intrinsic motivation to experience. The study could conclude that intrinsic motivation and a feeling joy is the most important motivational factor for both groups to participate in sports.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate how elite athlete students in Swedish high schools are motivated towards their sports by Self-determination Theory and Organismic Integration Theory, regarding the Modified Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-6). The study further aims to investigate if elite athlete students had developed symptoms of burnout, regarding the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). Finally, this study aims to investigate if there exist any correlations between student’s motivation and symptoms of burnout. Studies have reported findings of elite athletes as a special vulnerable group towards symptoms of burnout. Elite athletes train close to their limits, strain themselves to highest achievements. They are also part of that special vulnerable population who may experience symptoms of burnout due to a prolonged stress and pressure associated with elite sports.  Methods: Data collection was obtained by emails between the investigators and high schools in Stockholm. 15 sport high schools were contacted by email and 7 of these high schools participated in the study. 131 elite athlete students participated in the study by answering a questionnaire which contained 39 items, specifically 24 items by SMS-6 and 15 items by ABQ. The questionnaire were answered by a 7 point Likert scale.  Results: The three highest scored means by SMS-6 was the integrated motivation (M = 5,7), identified motivation (M = 4,9) and introjected motivation (M = 4,7). ABQ measure of burnout was (M = 3). The two major findings in the present study was a negative significant correlation reported for integrated motivation and burnout (-0,18) and a positive significant correlation reported for amotivation and burnout (0,37).  Conclusion: By the results in the present study it seems as high levels of self-determinated motivation counteract symptoms of burnout. Thus it also seems as low levels of self-determinated motivation may contribute to symptoms of burnout.

"Modeling Motivation: Examining the Structural Validity of the Sport Motivation Scale-6 among Runners." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.15129.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Two models of motivation are prevalent in the literature on sport and exercise participation (Deci & Ryan, 1991; Vallerand, 1997, 2000). Both models are grounded in self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2000) and consider the relationship between intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation in explaining behavior choice and outcomes. Both models articulate the relationship between need satisfaction (i.e., autonomy, competence, relatedness; Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2000; Ryan & Deci, 2000) and various cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes as a function of self-determined motivation. Despite these comprehensive models, inconsistencies remain between the theories and their practical applications. The purpose of my study was to examine alternative theoretical models of intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation using the Sport Motivation Scale-6 (SMS-6; Mallett et al., 2007) to more thoroughly study the structure of motivation and the practical utility of using such a scale to measure motivation among runners. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate eight alternative models. After finding unsatisfactory fit of these models, exploratory factor analysis was conducted post hoc to further examine the measurement structure of motivation. A three-factor structure of general motivation, external accolades, and isolation/solitude explained motivation best, although high cross-loadings of items suggest the structure of this construct still lacks clarity. Future directions to modify item content and re-examine structure as well as limitations of this study are discussed.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>M.A. Educational Psychology 2012

Abstract:
Title: Motivation football players under influence of level of competition and loading level Objectives: The first aim of this study is to describe the motivation of football players. The second aim is to find out how players' motivational structure changes depending on the level of gaming. The third aim of the thesis is to verify the hypotheses regarding the motivation structure and their changes on the set criteria. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The data was obtained using the Czech version of the Sport motivation scale. Relationships between motivation and the monitored variables (belonging to the given team - level of competition, gaming load) were evaluated using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Comparison of motivation at clubs at different levels of competition was performed using the t-test. By comparison, the data were compared with the results of other relevant studies. Results: On a given sample (n = 50), we found a correlation of the positive and the negative direction. At the alpha level of 0.1, a negative amortization correlation was found at the descending team level (R = 0.26; p-value = 0.07). A similar result was given by the result of the t-test, when we found a significant difference between the players from AC Sparta Praha and non-selective clubs (T = 2.8;...

Abstract:
This paper describes the potential use of a SMS crossword puzzle system to promote interaction and learning activities in a large classroom environment. While personal response systems (PRS) have been used in the classroom environment to foster interaction, it is not an ideal tool with respect to cost and functionality. These limitations prompted the need for an alternative solution. A SMS crossword puzzle system was thus devised. The system consisted of two parts: modem software to interface with mobile phones and a database application to generate puzzles, track users’ input and display an updated puzzle view. A pilot evaluation was conducted with three main objectives in mind. First the evaluation intended to determine the motivational potential of the puzzle by assessing the significance of the factors which comprise the constructs of learner motivation. Second, the evaluation intended to identify any differences in motivational factors between a junior and a senior class. Finally, the evaluation intended to assess the potential of behavioral intention to use/play the SMS crossword puzzle in the future. The pilot evaluation also sought to identify areas for improvement and to prepare for future full scale evaluation of the SMS crossword puzzle system.
