Abstract:
The popularity of 'lifestyle' sports like surfing has risen exponentially since the 1990s (Booth, 2004; Wheaton, 2010). The female interest in surfing has been a particularly pronounced feature of this growth; evident not only in terms of participation, but in terms of consumption and visibility across forms of popular culture worldwide (Corner, 2010). This so-called 'boom' of interest in surfing amongst women in Britain is an important topic for feminist analysis. In its contemporary form, the sport has particularly strong links to standards of white heteronormativity, and the heterosexy image of the 'surfer girl' is a central aspect of surfing's commercial mainstreaming. At the same time, surfing is still a relatively ' new', and so-called 'alternative' sporting space, particularly amongst women in Britain. As such, it has the potential to challenge dominant discourses of femininity. Taking a post-structural feminist perspective, this research focuses on the ways in which females who surf are experiencing, negotiating and challenging issues of gender, sexuality and subjectivity in British surfing spaces. I draw on 32 in-depth interviews with females who surf, and ethnographic fieldwork conducted in four coastal locations; Brighton, Newquay, Newcastle and South Wales. I also offer self-reflexive insights as part of this ethnographic journey. The theoretical approach adopted is informed by the philosophical ideas of Deleuzel and Guattari , post-structural and post-modern feminisms and some aspects of queer theory. This 'meshwork' of influences makes for a unique epistemological and ontological perspective which I argue facilitates different and emergent ways of thinking about sport and space. In this thesis I weave these theoretical influences into an analysis of the lived experiences of females who surf in Britain. What emerges from the stories of the women and girls in this research is that surfing and surfing culture does in many ways reproduce the narrowly defined cultural norms connected to gender and sexuality. Importantly however, there are also various ways in which female surfers are disrupting these norms. This is made evident in the ways that female surfers are interpreting (sub)cultural values, emotionally negotiating surfing spaces, experiencing feminine body ideals, challenging spatial heteronormativity, and creating 'female-only' spaces. My research demonstrates that gendered power relations in surfing remain contested, and that challenges to dominant power relations are often transient and subtle in nature. However, I argue that because surfing is not as spatially and temporally located as most other sports, the power relations which infuse surfing spaces are less fixed, and thus remain open to more mobile and subtle forms of political agency. It is my contention that women and girls who surf in Britain are actively instigating ruptures in the heteronormalising of spaces, and that 'paddling out' is emerging as a powerful and potentially feminist way of exploring, experiencing and embodying female subjectivities.

Abstract:
This research explores the determinants of inter-partner learning in alliances. The potential for organisations to learn from their alliance partner is well recognised in the literature. The Knowledge Based View of the Firm (KBV) posits that an organisation’s knowledge base, especially its tacit knowledge base, is a source of sustainable competitive advantage. Three key determinants of inter-partner learning are: intent to learn, transparency (i.e. willingness to share knowledge) and receptivity (i.e. capacity to learn). These three concepts are used to guide a single case study of an alliance between a National Sport Organisation (NSO) and a Professional Sport Franchise (PSF). Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with key informants at both organisations. Each individual transcript was colour coded in relation to each of the four research questions. All relevant quotes were then copied into separate files for each organisation and categorised by research question. The results of the study suggest that 1) despite historical conflict, the relationship between alliance partners is becoming increasingly positive; 2) intent to learn was low in both organisations but higher in the NSO; 3) the NSO was more transparent than the PSF; and 4) receptivity was low for both organisations. Key conclusions of the research are that the NSO and PSF are failing to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by their relationship, but intent, transparency and receptivity remain useful concepts to explore inter-partner learning.

Abstract:
From the point of vue of sport events shows, North America and Europe are characterized by a seemingly sealed practices to each other. Between permanences and differences, the study of the examples of football in Paris and baseball in New York provides a better understanding of the different aspects of sport and culture that are taken into account in the definition of « the way to be part of the show » : weight of ethnomotorskills, influence of history, role of global culture, rules on how to set the show, structure of national sports systems, economics and sports laws, terms of competition and organization of leagues, or more or less deritives « mythologies » show that the success every professional league is based on the dissemination and replication of a specific culture. Sport as a show appears in the final instance as a « soft matter » which adapts to local cultures

Heyraud, Yann. Thesis, Paris 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA01D009/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The production of non-state norms is growing in private international relations. The analysis of these norms in commercial and sporting activities is progressively building a unified definition of the notion of non-state norms: set of rules written and unilaterally drawn up by private and/or public actors, has intended to be applied with regard to the activity concerned, regardless of State borders. This proposal is put to the test of the various interactions maintained by non-state norms, in order to explain how these norms work. Arbitration attests to its receipt, the frequency of its application and even its promotion, up to the exclusion of imperative national rules. The French legal system, as a matter of principle, refuses to accept these non-state norms. Exceptionally, this principle is contradicted by the action of judges, legislators or bodies whose competence is recognized by the French legal system. At a -supra-state level, the Court of Justice directly controls non-state norms which may hamper the freedoms guaranteed by the European Union, including the free movement of workers. The European Court of Human Rights has the possibility of indirectly controlling non-state norms transposed by States, due to potential breach of individual freedoms, for example in the fight against doping. Moreover, Private International Law helps to explain the application of non-state norms, enhances their efficiency, and potentially and prospectively participates in the resolution of conflicts of norms produced by nonstate norms

Abstract:
The Tour De France (TDF) is the third largest sporting event in the world and the biggest cycling race in terms of popularity and prestige. The event generates global media exposure and attracts millions of short- and long-term visitors each year, thus, TDF is extremely appealing for communities in search of profits. Using Linear Directional Mean (LDM) and semi-structured interviews (community and organization sides), this paper analyzes how TDF has spatially evolved through time by comparing the 2021 racetrack to other time intervals. Additionally, reasons of the potential shift in terms of spatial distribution are investigated considering current issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has severely affected the tourism sector and therefore, the benefits that communities were expecting to perceive by hosting TDF. Findings showed that the 2021 route deviated from previous editions time of the TDF history including 10 new stage cities that never hosted the event before. The respondent from the organization indicated the pandemic only indirectly affected the TDF route and that the location of the Grand Départ as well as the main internal constraints imposed to the organizers are key elements in the spatial distribution of the event. Interviewed communities acknowledged that there was risk while hosting TDF this year due to potential restrictive measures. However, they recognized that benefits brought by the race largely overweight potential negative impacts from the epidemic. Indeed, TDF remains a way to bring economic benefits, social cohesion, happiness, pride and satisfaction to hosting cities at a time when the tourism industry is at a standstill.

Abstract:
This research is situated in the field of language teaching. It is based on an experience of teaching French through a circus arts project, conducted in a primary school with a group of children aged 6 to 11, recently arrived in France. The hypothesis is that circus activities through the emotions involved and the implied situations of communication lead to spontaneous speech and have a positive effect of L2 oral production. The steps of the project take into account the evolution of emotions developed in these artistic activities: - Move to feel moved - See and feel moved – Give to see for spectators to feel moved. The analysis of the tasks in the light of language acquisition theories leads to a better understanding of the impact of this project on learners’ oral production of French. The analysis of the oral production, the examination of the investment of learners in the project and of emotions they expressed, allow me to highlight certain elements of the link between emotion, investment and L2 acquisition. After measuring the scope and limits of this study, I can suggest a few perspectives and advice for the establishment of a circus project involving L2 acquisition

In a global society of where information is given almost in real time, the media have the capacity to create an impact in various domains of the economy, namely in the performance of companies listed on stock exchanges. Football is not an exception. The thousands of shareholders of major clubs are not indifferent to unexpected events and to the financial activity of the favorites. This Work of Project studies the effects of journalistic information on the daily closing prices of the three major Portuguese clubs, Benfica, Porto and Sporting, that is, the share prices of the public limited sports companies that hold them, in the period between November 2009 and June 2018. The methodology to be used will be the event study, using the Chow test with dummy variables, created for each of the days of the event window, in order to assess the statistical significance of the effect of news on the variation of the closing quotation. The procedure starts from the hypothesis that there is media when the number of daily transactions exceeds a certain minimum number, defined for each team. It is concluded that meet this condition, and therefore may be associated with news that potentially affected the performance of the teams, positively or negatively, are the signing of contracts concerning television rights and the hiring and / or dismissal of managers. The anticipation of title wins is one of the other causes for a significant increase in the number of daily transactions in a given period.

Abstract:
What would happen to the Sporting Goods Industry if the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and second largest in the world decided to buy one of the fastest growing companies, with a very strong presence in the USA? The aim for this dissertation is to correctly evaluate the pricing for both Adidas AG and Under Armour, Inc., in a deal that would strengthen the German company. The objective is simple: dominate the largest market in the world, North America, and dethrone the giant Nike. This dissertation will center on valuing both companies, with a focus on the combined synergies resulting from the merger. For that, I computed three valuation methods: Discounted Cash-Flow (DCF), Adjusted Present Value (APV), and Relative Valuation (Multiples). I will also provide an industry and company overview, in order to extract the main conclusions, and its impact on a worldwide level. In the end, my recommendation is that Adidas acquires Under Armour with a premium of 34% over each share class, as follows: Class A valued at €17,97, Class C valued at €15,62 and Class B, not publicly traded, at €39,12. This will result in a total value of €8.139 million, €2.067 million over the Market Capitalization.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the influences of intervention of a leisure sports program on elementary school students’ attitudes toward and habits of sports. The research subjects were 120 six-grade students from 4 classes selected from an elementary school in Sanchong District, New Taipei City through purposive sampling. The experimental group consisted of students from 2 of the classes (58 students). These students had participated in a curriculum designed by this study. And students from the other two classes were assigned to the control group (62 students). The data analysis methods adopted include statistical methods such as descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-test, and dependent-sample t-test, to compare the experimental group with the control group in attitudes toward and habits of sports before and after tests. And the research findings include: 1.Among elementary school students' attitudes toward sports, the score of the "sports cognition" was the highest for students all recognized the advantages of sports, followed by "sports affection", while the score of "sports behavior" was the lowest. 2.Among elementary school students’ habits of sports, most students did exercise twice a week. Most of their companions were their families and classmates. Exercise locations were mainly parks and schools. And the most common exercises were biking, basketball, and running. 3.After the intervention of the leisure sports program, students' attitudes toward sports were improved. The improvements in sports cognition, sports affection, and sports behavior were significant. Especially, the improvement in sports behavior was the largest. 4.After the intervention of the leisure sports program, students' habits of sports were improved. Their frequencies of doing exercise in weekday and holiday both increased. And they spent a lot more time in sports. 5.Both attitudes toward and habits of sports were not significantly different in the male and female experimental groups before the intervention of the leisure sports program. After the program, although the attitudes toward sports were still not different, male students' habits of sports were significantly better than female students', meaning the intervention of the leisure sports program was more efficient for male students. The conclusion of the study: The intervention of the leisure sports program helped the students to develop a positive attitude toward sports and improved their sporting habit. Thus, it is suggested that schools can arrange various and diversified sports programs when designing their physical education, offering time management curriculums, so that students can develop a positive attitude toward sports and good sporting habits in their lives in time.
